Good range of beers, old-school friendly manager and great atmosphere

Unassuming pub on the outside, definitely worth going through the door. Warm friendly welcome. Seated quickly. Pub classics plus some alternative dishes. Great quality mains & desserts. Range of real ales and great coffee. And for those interested in such things, pristine clean WC's.

Food is amazing, very friendly place to visit. Pizzas to die for, perfect.

We ended up at the Red Lion because the other nearby pub was full and the one we initially wanted to go to didn't serve food as they advertised. The staff at the Red Lion gave us a warm welcome and the menu had a nice variety of meals to choose from. We were pleased with the well-cooked dishes we ordered for three adults and one child. The prices were reasonable for both the food and drinks. We had a good experience and will likely come back in the future.

We popped in for a mid week tea. Amazing sized portions, great to see proper pub food at pub prices at last! The curry was delicious- I was even asked how I wanted it cooked.

The food is really top-notch, and the service is outstanding. They have a unique menu with some great choices you don't see everywhere else. And you can tell all the desserts are homemade and super tasty. Definitely worth the money!"

A nice pub/restaurant, slightly hidden away. Went for a nice hot roast dinner on a wet bank holiday weekend and the food was nice, but not hot. I had a lovely slow cooked pork belly, others the beef and lamb. Apart from the side dishes everything was lukewarm. Dessert for my partner was apple pie, perhaps unusually served cold. I had sticky toffee pudding, which also was cold. We did asked the waitress if they're supposed to be cold and she said yes. My partner wasn't convinced apple pie is nice fridge cold and I definitely have never experienced cold sticky toffee pudding. So whilst the presentation and flavour was there, I couldn't score it higher than 3 and that may be generous.

I recently enjoyed a delightful afternoon tea experience that was truly wonderful. The staff members were friendly and engaging, creating a lovely atmosphere. I definitely look forward to returning to sample their lunch and evening menus. Overall, I had a great time and appreciate the positive experience.

I recently visited this place with some friends and had a great time. The staff was friendly and the waitress was really helpful. The food was excellent, cooked to perfection and well presented. It was one of the best pub meals I've had in a while, and the prices were reasonable. I'm looking forward to going back there again.

Waitress very welcoming. Pub quite quiet. Service good but quality of food for most of group was poor - even though it was fairly cheap. I had 3 bean chilli. Served with rice in a tortilla basket. The tortilla was hard and inedible. Rice was cooked well but completely dry even with the chilli on top as there was absolutely no sauce. It was almost as if the dish had been cooked early morning and just left in oven to dry out. My other friends were not happy about their food either - lots of food left. Chips very overcooked. Such a shame as we were made very welcome. So - good for drinks but certainly not food.

The Red Lion exceeded its self yet again the Sunday Roast was fit for a King . A great selection of real Ale,fantastic atmosphere,big shout out for the bar staff and waitresses who treated us like Royals .The red lion Caerleon Best kept secret ,we will be back …

This is a completely honest review. Visited for Sunday lunch with friends table of 4. Starters x1 garlic mushrooms - lukewarm tasteless and slimy and very dark sauce. X1 potato and leek soup- absolutely rotten strong disgusting smell. X2 Brie and cranberry- lovely, hot, nice presentation. Main meals x3 roast beef dinner. Roast Potatoes inedible, tasted of old dated burnt oil from a fryer. Beef tasted of the same oil. X1 chicken breast- stringy nasty cheap. Terrine of vegetables tasted again of this horrendous oil. Rejected the soup and 1 of the lunches. Left most of the other lunches on the plates. Lovely young waitress was left to deal with our food queries on her own & she didn’t receive any back up or help from her unprofessional management, such a shame as she was lovely. This is a lovely looking pub restaurant however, needless to say, we shall not return. Horrendous Food and the worst ever Sunday lunch experience.

Went for a meal here as the place is dog friendly. Booked a meal for 6 people just an hour before we arrived. Very friendly staff. Very accommodating. Lovely helpful waitress. Food came promptly and was tasty on the whole, and reasonably priced. But the place itself was cold and uninviting. No atmosphere or ambience. A few lamps or candles would have made it cosier. But it was cold and lifeless. Other than that it was OK.

A lovely pub, relaxed and warm atmosphere. Good choice of drinks and friendly, prompt service. We were there on curry night and would highly recommend the meal deal, we also had desert (bounty cheesecake and sticky toffee pudding). One curry choice, homemade and tasty. Really lovely food, and the chips were homemade and great!

Food was ok but bit disappointing, mussels were lukewarm and so were returned. No desert menu and could not understand waiters verbal list. Other diners near us were rude and vulgar, not Red Lion fault but… I had a Guinness , split some on the table, never offered to get a cloth to clean table. Watching bar staff pour a larger, it was not poured correctly and froth spilled down the sides of the glass, the bar maid drew her hands down the outside of the glass to clean the glass. Seems some training and more experienced are required.

Went to pie night. The food was delicious. Had lamb pie. The filling was tender and tasty although it was like a casserole with a pastry lid on. Will go again but will choose different dish.

This restaurant would have been given 5 stars for the food but all dish were only luke warm as dishes were cold the food was served on.

Cracking food, really attentive service and a lovely Atmos. I'd strongly recommend the Hake and the muscles, absolutely scrum. Do watch out for the espresso martini on tap though, very tasty but very dangerous.

Food was a mixed bag, my chips tasted like they had been cooked the day before and then reheated, my partners daughter was served over ripe advacado and my wife’s sandwich was missing 1 of the fillings.

Quiet when we visited on a Sunday. Had the beer garden to ourselves. Table service rather than visiting the bar, very friendly. Went out of their way to sort out the children who didn't want Sunday lunch. Excellent service

As we only live in Newport we tend to walk to Caerleon go in a couple of pubs and stagger home. However, this pub up until this week was not on our radar. We were staying at a hotel in Caeleon and were looking for a nice place for a sarnie and a pint. Now two things we are both veggie and both members of CAMRA. As such the first thing I look for in a pub is whether there are handpulls, Next what is on . Last the food menu. So on looking through the window when I saw that there was possibly one of our favourite breweries on tap it became a no brainer.There is a sanitiser station before you enter the inner door and then a one way system in place, there are signs on the floor to show you which way to go. We sat down and could see that the tables were well spaced. Staff were really nice and you felt at ease straight away, not always the case in pubs these days.We had two pints of well kept beer and two sandwiches which were freshly made. I believe that the current tenant has only recently taken over and is doing a sterling job given the current climate. He has also had another handpull fitted, making three, which will give him the ability to have a guest beer.We enjoyed ourselves so much we went back the following day, although only for a drink but stayed much longer than we expected!!The building is deceptive from the front being actually much more spacious inside. I fully recommend this pub for a decent pint and good food with a bit of chat thrown in.

Wasn’t impressed with the roast dinner, especially the lack of green vegetables and the peas looked like they had been boiled within a inch of their life! I wanted chicken but only red meat and fish was shown on the menu, but when I asked they did have chicken, not sure why this wasn’t shown, there was also no prices on the menu. Food wasn’t that nice, wouldn’t go back here again and limited vegetarian food. Also when I came to pay it was cash only and I was asked to go to the cash point next door which charged for withdrawing cash, wasn’t happy about that so the pub paid the charge for me, not a great experience.

Decided to come down on a Thursday evening to try the curry night. It was two curries for £15 (half and half - obviously essential) and had a Madras and a Balti. Can honestly say the food was delicious and excellent value. Highly recommended.

The food was very disappointing as we had to send the starters and main course back as they were cold. No offer of recompense was made. It is such a shame as the pub is very nice and I would not want to see the pub close.

Went for Sunday lunch: was absolutely amazing. Huge portion - loads of veg (more than we could fit on the plate in the picture) & two huge slices of pork belly. Homely, tasty food & a lovely pub dog greeting us too. Highly recommended.

What a great pub , we booked birthday meal here , we came from Bristol as our son lives nearby , they made us feel very welcome, they looked after us, food was fantastic and reasonable, so thank you so much .

Both meals not as described on menu and luke warm. Cheap ingredients, again not as described.We were the only two customers in the pub on a Thursday lunchtime !! Both plates went back barely touched and I explained politely to waitress the issues. She was pleasant but no explanation or apology from manager or chef, neither of whom came to see us.I paid with no fuss as was meant to be a treat for my friend but won't be going back. I always support local businesses but this experience was very poor. Very disappointed as I take my friend out every Christmas and she so looks forward to it and it was just a hugely disappointing meal.

We wanted a quick light lunch and were a bit late in finding somewhere. The Red Lion offered a good, varied menu and we had starters and side orders. The staff were very helpful and welcoming and the surroundings were warm and pleasant. The home made soup and garlic bread were delicious.

Me and my boyfriend visited after the remembrance day parade in Caerleon. I wasn't overly impressed to be honest, it wasn't busy at all and we were placed right up the back where the staff were folding napkins and talking between themselves which kind of ruined the atmosphere. The menu said the vegetables came with cauliflower cheese but there wasn't even cauliflower, the carrots were cold and I mean cold. The beef and gravy were lovely though! I'm not sure if it was just the opening so not quite prepared enough. The place itself looked nice and cosy pub atmosphere.

Me and my partner visited the red lion on Saturday the 9th of November and the Food was absolutely stunning. Highly recommend.

Very very disappointing! If I could give this place a zero I would! We had pie of the day, “fresh” salmon and seasonal vegetable side. Well the pie had less meat that a Greg’s steak bake, it comprised of 4 pieces of steak and dried up gravy. The salmon had freezer burn and had a similar consistency to moist jerky, the sauce on the pasta was like runny cream with a sour taste. The vegetables were no better with the cauliflower having some blue green substance coating it. Feedback was given to the person who served out food and we were assured that the food was not frozen and charged £32 for a meal we couldn’t eat and sent on our way. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Or if you like to waste money just throw it in the bin instead!!

My husband and I visited on Friday 24th and had a fabulous 3 course meal. The food and service was exemplary. The staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Will definitely return.

We booked this pub to have lunch spoke to someone about the menu and was told they had taken over in May so we had booked previously with old owners and when we got there the place was closed with a note saying not open. surprise surprise go there this lunch only to fine door locked no notice and no one answering the phone. If I were you and thinking of booking definitely try somewhere else that's reliable, you don't deserve customers when you treat them like this

Gastro pub this is not! An eatery with modest character. A building full of dining tables rather close together without table cloths or napkins. We ordered quite good starters, undercooked chops and a rather rude waiter made for a rather disappointing night. Wouldn't go there again.

I arrived on time to be met by a polite young barmaid who was very helpful and then the problem began we ordered drinks and were shown to our table minus 1 drink . 10 mins later we returned to bar to ask where our drink was . The barmaid replied oops sorry I forgot it .45 mins later we were still waiting to order . We then told them we were leaving. I asked the lady’s name and she would not give it . She was very rude . Hope you can sort it out because seems a very nice pub
