I booked a table for 2, thinking it was a different pub in the area. The village of Wheelton is so quiet and very nice. On arrival, I must admit I was a bit apprehensive. Looks like a traditional local pub, not emphasising any food service really. Anyhow, our table was reserved. In no time at all, the lady took our drinks order and told us what was on the menu. Beef or Turkey Dinner. Nothing else, just that. Ordered one of each, Was pleasantly surprised, accompanied with a lovely Homemade Yorkshire Pudding, Mashed Potatoes, Roast Potatoes, Carrots, Cauliflower and Broccoli. At at tenner each, you can't go wrong. I didn't see any signs on the main road, advertising the pub. They should do, to get extra custom especially food.

We took advantage of the 'Eat Out to Help Out' during covid and enjoyed our time here. There is a one way system in operation (in through the back and out through the front) We noticed tables were cleaned after vacated. We booked an early table to avoid the busy spell and felt comfortable with our 11yr old and 2yr old so we will be going back whether its for a quick drink passing or for another meal.

I met my friend for lunch just after lockdown has ended, but was pretty quiet at same with just a few regulars. Not an extensive menu but the food we had was definitely home-cooked and tasty. We both had the hot beef balm which was really tasty, thick rugs beef in gravy on a soft white roll. My friend had chips with hers, they looked really good and definitely seem to be home-cooked and not freezer chips. I had the home-made pea soup, it was just how I would make it at home, it was very tasty and so thick!

The Res Lion has two things going for it primarily - 1) the quality of the cask ale is second to none with a good wide variety. 2) Balti Chips - a huge portion of home made chips with Lashings of homemade veg Balti for about £4! What more could you ask for? In all seriousness the pub decor is a little tired, but the food and ale is good and honest - making it a good value place to lunch.

2 kids meals of burger & chips. The burgers were cooked on the outside & red raw in the middle. The lady serving us said sorry & took them away & delivered 2 more. The burgers were cut in half & had been cooked on the cut edge but again were raw in the middle. We were offed a refund or chicken burgers. I asked for a refund as we had been sat waiting for some time. The lady was polite & apologetic & offed the kids a free dessert. As the refund never came on our way out I mentioned it the owner who was now serving on the bar. He arrogantly passed me £4. & walked away to serve someone else. I said excuse me we had 2 kids meals both raw & the second lot was also raw. He handed me another £2. didnt apologize but very arrogantly went on to say they had changed their meat supplier & the burgers were just that colour. Thank God my kids were old enough to know the difference & didnt swallow any.

We are local to the village and have seen many landlords come and go over the years. The current landlords really seem to be trying to make a go of the pub. They do good offeres throughout the week and are very good value. Good drink selection and drinks now served in appropriate glasses to drink choice. My husband enjoys real ale and I enjoy a G&t; which they have a good selection of both. The locals are all very friendly and want the current landlord to make a go of it. It's still a shame that the decor has not been updated but this is upto the owners of the building. It is clean and welcoming hopefully some money will be spent on the interior in the near future.

Called on the off chance they were serving food at about 4.00pm on Saturday. Suited us perfectly as the pub is dog friendly. The service was magnificent, the young lady couldn't do enough for us and made a fuss of our dog and brought a bowl of water and some treats for her. The landlord/chef came out and asked if our food was OK, we were very pleased to say yes. There is a small enclosed car park behind the pub with a pleasant garden with tables and chairs. The pub itself is small and old fashioned but definitely don't let that put you off. The steaks were to die for and not expensive. Coffee was good and served hot and they do snacks, even chip butties! Only problem they can only take cash at the moment, not cards. We will go there again and soon. A very pleasant surprise.

Took my daughter to look at the Christmas displays which were lovely. Decided to nip in to the cafe for a hot chocolate and a cake but was very disappointed. The hot chocolate was clearly not made with even a drop of milk. It was just chocolate flavoured water. At £3.85 including cream and marshmallows I was expecting a luxury hot chocolate. I ordered a chocolate brownie slice and my daughter got the malteser slice. Both were dry as a bone which made it difficult to eat. Maybe a blob of cream or scoop of ice cream to help it go down would've helped. We didn't finish the cakes or the chocolate flavoured water. It came to just over 15 quid. We won't bother with the cafe in future.
