I used to pop in here for when we went to Westhead Chippy. Today I went with my folks. What a great pub. Excellent beer and the home cooked food is proper Pub grub with locally sourced veg and meat. Also great for sport or just a quiet meal. Fantastic , friendly staff as well. What a good old English pub should be.

We've been coming here for our annual bowling day out for the last 4 years, the staff are very good, food is very good, bowling green is very good , we'll definitely be coming back. 👍

Lovely local old school pub. Unfortunately the glass collector took my half full bottle off the table thinking it was empty. Slightly annoying!!

We were just driving through Croston and decided to stop at this pub, and we are glad that we did. Staff were really friendly and the food was delicious. Felt like a traditional country pub.

Have been here five times now over two years, the food is spot on. Menu has been different every time with something for all tastes. Freshly cooked veg and perfect pastry on the pies. Will definitely be going back

Great venue for a bowling picnic, superb green, we were looked after throughout the day by all the staff. Great food and good selection of beers. Can't recommend highly enough.

Went to play bowls with a team, very welcoming, garden is lovely and very well cared for. Sandwiches provided where tasty and fresh would go as a couple for a meal.

Excellent, this is what I call a pub. The cask ale is A1, not a lot of choice but what there is, is excellent, plus £6.60 for 2 pints of top quality beer when a pub around the corner is charging £8.80 for 2 pints of undrinkable. We will be back

Had the mince & onion pie + chips, think the plate had been under a heater, was dry, not as good as usual !!

Food outside saying food served all day, you Go in and not serving food as got a birthday party Should had common sense to put no food sign today to save us trouble parking and going in, and they didn’t get my point or simply remove their advertising sign chalk A board all together

Nice peaceful place good atmosphere surrounded by lots of green spaces very polite staff and its a good place to break the daily routine and have a chill with some friends

First visit, very nice indeed. Looks small from the outside, but huge inside, and a big bowling green to the rear. Reasonable prices and nice staff.

Lovely pub lovely setting nice staff and a few nice cask beers. Plus dog friendly. Ordered 2 roasts must say not the best. I think the beef was stewing steak tasty though but veg was a let down. My wife had chicken which was dry and a tad tough! Roast pots had a taste of boiled and then dropped into a deep fat fryer on order and were a bit hard. The veg was very aldenti to the point of the parsnip being told about steam but never coming in contact. Plus carrot had an eye poor quality control. Plus it was the only carrot. Overall it was disappointing but we would visit again

What a brilliant pub. First time I've been in. Spacious car park. Traditional cosy warm rooms. Excellent choice of hand drawn cast conditioned beers. Oban 14 whisky, what a surprise for a pub to have such a special whisky, full bodied with a wonderful hint of smoke. Friendly locals at the bar, all having fun. Outstanding staff, really engaging, warm and welcoming. Exceptionally reasonable prices. This is exactly what a good pub should be like. I will definitely be visiting again as soon as possible. Busy locals pub with a great atmosphere and good food.

It's a proper country pub with a log fires, traditional decor, a good real ale selection, friendly locals and a bowling green at the back.

Excellent food love it when your last mouthful is still as hot as your first never had a bad meal here and it's literally 100yards from where we live we tend to go further afield thinking we'll eat away from home and end up disappointed think we will stick with local from now on I had meatballs and my hubby had the pie both lovely definitely recommend

Arrived for evening meal at 19h50 told kitchen closed 😋 😜 🤪 got told sorry no service after 19h30 so way advertise food served very disappointing 😑 😐 😕 😄 😅 😀

My hubby daughter and me went for a meal today I had scampi Alan had meat pie and Louise had a vegan burger with all the trimmings it was delicious defo going back.

Our bowling club booked there green, we couldn't bowl because of the weather, but the landlord let us use one of there rooms , and we played darts and dominos, it was a great day, many thanks to the staff, the food was excellent, we will definitely be returning.

Passed through croston on bank holiday Sunday and decided to call in for a drink and some food. Sat on the front for a while waiting and no one came out. I then went inside and was told quite rudely I wasn’t allowed at the bar and someone would come out. They did then said they had run out of coke and was going over the road to the shop to get some. Ordered food and waited 50 minutes, then asked one of the staff to check how long it would be. She disappeared came back 5 minutes later to say she couldn’t tell us how long it would be. Shocking service with staff who really don’t know what they are doing.

I'm in the black at 4.45pm on the 18th September 2020 fantastic pub best in lancashire great atmosphere great staff and great beer. The only problem is the trip advisor is saying on it's site that the black horse is closed today, wrong wrong please alter the information about the bud being closed when it's open, this duff information could affect the sales for the pub which like all pubs are suffering at the moment

Quite strict on social distancing which is good for the local village as a lot of out of towners will pass through. Full credit to the owners 👍🍺👌

My wife and I have recently moved to the village and have visited this excellent pub several times. We had steak night this evening, and it was top class. Steak was perfect. Cheers!!!

Must be one of the best pubs in the North West

Went with my wife and two brothers at the weekend for a family meal. The establishment is very cosy with a warm atmosphere and friendly welcoming staff. Was extremely impressed with the quality and value for money of the food. The Minted Lamb Henry was probably the most tender and tasty dish that I have eaten in a long time. Other members of the group were equally impressed by their meals (chilli con carne and steak pie). Have no problem in recommending this restaurant.

Don’t bother go elsewhere, landlord is rude particularly to young people, from what I witnessed. Food rubbish service poor, needs to have a lesson in customer service and how to treat his future customers because Croston relies on locals ... won’t be going back in a rush

Poor customer service. Shown to a table by landlord. There for 2 hours. Ordered and paid for food to then be told by landlord that we hadn’t booked so couldn’t serve us. Asked if table was booked by someone else, were told no! Got our money back and left. No apology from landlord who was very abrupt. We had travelled from Coventry to meet up with friends over from Australia. It was very disappointing and an embarrassing endorsement of British hospitality. Went to Wheatsheaf down the road where we were welcomed and had a beautiful meal.

We arrived at 5pm to watch the football, picked an un reserved table. Was there for an hour then ordered a meal for 6, only to be told we cannot eat there because we had not booked the table?? I asked why and the manager said we are fully booked, but 60%of the tables were empty?? I did ask is our table booked for someone else and he said no?? So why could we not have a meal? Seriously do not understand why if the table was free? They made us leave.... will not be returning......

Really unimpressed, went there at about 5pm, waited for our friends to come who arrived at 6, went to order food at 6:30 and got told that as we didn't have a booking, we couldn't order any food, and that they were fully booked. We asked if anyone was having the table after we were leaving and the answer was no from the landlord himself. Will definitely not be returning. What a disgrace.

The busiest of the 4 pubs in Croston when we visited both for eaters and drinkers. There is a great sense of community in here despite it being less well decorated and looked after than the others. Sports Tv , pool table and a large car park.

Friendly staff, great beer, great experience, great stuff! Went along to the Black Horse in Croston when a music charity event was taking place and caught an excellent live band, I think they were a local band called 'Rhyming with Orange' (or 'Oranges') who enhanced the atmosphere.Hopefully visit again when next in area.

Great venue for a bowls outing. Food home cooked and good service. It rained a bit !! But we still bowled. The landlord allowed our party to use the pub facilities and to have quizzes etc during the rainy periods. Most enjoyable.

Out on a school night for something to eat in our village, saw the sign for Thursday Steak night & guessed I’d end up with cheese sandwich & chips!Asked Tracy if there was any Veggie main meal, she went & asked, came back with various options. I went for the Chilli Balti whilst hubby went for steak.It arrived, we hardly spoke, cleaned our plates. Food was delicious, chips were proper home made .... everything about it was perfect.I spoke to Andy, the manager & chef who explained that there’s not much call for vegetarian food but he’s always prepared to provide options on request. He’d literally made my curry from scratch, there & then & it really was the tastiest curry I’ve ever eaten in a pub. Hubby said his was pretty good too!Well worth a visit & ASK for a veggie option!

Excellent Lunch. Pate is really nice, as was the Roast and Irish Stew. Excellent value for money. Will definitely be going back.

I have been here a few times with my wife for lunch or dinner. It does seem like a bit of an old school old man pub but don't let that put you off the staff are very friendly good selection of drinks ale's ect. But the star of the show is the food it's absolutely delicious, the last time I had mince & onion pie. It was to die for you can tell is super fresh & home made. Took me back to food my gran used to make. Couldn't fault it.

Went to the Black Horse Saturday. Starter of black pudding with crushed potatoes was excellent. I had the mixed grill which was superb - every item was tender and flavoursome, and I cleared the plate! My wife had the lamb chops which she swears are the best she's ever tasted, and my daughter thoroughly enjoyed her burger, which was thick and juicy. Service was impeccable and the whole dining experience was a delight. I can heartily recommend the place!

Great village pub. Booked for food after walk around Croston and Rufford. Made welcome despite muddy boots and dogs, bit of a wait for food but well worth it; local produce, freshly cooked and great value for money.

We called at the last minute on a Saturday, no problem getting a table. good selection of beers, and well kept too. The meal was pub grub, really well cooked and presented and tasting lovely (Proper chips!!). I nor my companions could find no fault

Food lovely . When we went there children were running riot (late evening) which put a stop to a relaxing meal and drink.
