Great pub, lovely staff and lovely food

I come here every Wednesday for the smartphone quiz. Quiz is £2 per device. Theme quizzes at the end of the month. There are some great food and drink deals on a Wednesday. The venue serves cocktails. There is a play park and outside seating also.

Had a fantastic experience at the war horse! The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. * Server Deniz: Deniz was absolutely delightful. Her warm smile and friendly demeanor made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. She was attentive to our needs and provided excellent service throughout the meal. * Chef Ryan: The food was absolutely delicious, and Chef Ryan clearly takes great pride in his work. He was especially accommodating to our party member with allergies, ensuring that their meal was safe and enjoyable. * Manager Brendan: Brendan was fantastic with the children in our group. He was friendly, engaging, and made sure they were well taken care of. Overall, our experience at war horse was exceptional. The staff's friendliness, the delicious food, and the overall atmosphere made for a memorable evening. We highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great dining experience.

Not really great I ordered a chicken bbq burger. And the chicken was well over cooked and the manager wasn't for giving a refund.

Food by Chef Blake was nice and well cooked. Ice-cream was Massive after ... Server Brendon was a bit of a nutter (in a good way lol) would return..

Really quiet tonight considering it's a quiz night. Big shout out to Jess Alecia and Brendan on the bar drinks was flowing and very happy faces.😊

Came in for the first time tonight since I left this pub after working here and after the kitchen managers have now left. Let’s not go into details of why I left but many other reviews may let you get the idea as to why! I used to work here and eat here every Monday with the kids and come here and always say how good the food and service was when the last kitchen manager was here. But tonight I’m absolutely disgusted. We ordered the kids food two kids meals, sausage, chips and gravy, kids tacos, fish and chips, Korean burger and a chicken tikka. Now then the chips were cold, the fish looked like it was done on the grill it was black! The kids tacos the chicken was smaller than my pinky finger and my partners burger bun was cremated and then the curry was so watery it was unbelievable I needed a soup spoon to eat this. The atomosphere in here is so depressing and it’s absolutely dead now on a Monday when it used to be so busy. No one greets you anymore, everyone looks depressed and moody and who could blame them with the current state of the place and what’s happened to it. The service however wasn’t too bad and I got a smile when my food went down but other than that shocking. I can’t stand this place now and I Used to enjoy eating here. AVOID!

Lovely bar staff. Brendan at the bar was very helpful with my mum gluten intolerance and the food was delicious. Credit to the chief Blake who was very accommodating with my mother's needs. I would definitely return

Went in at lunch with friends and kiddies, placed our orders and after 25 minutes after being told 4 times my coffee was on it's way, I went to the bar and complained all I got was sorry every time. Whilst there a lady was getting a refund as she'd been waiting ages for hers! I complained saying you take the money then don't deliver, meanwhile a guy who had just finished serving someone said I'll do it. Meanwhile while I'm still complaining saying it's been 25 minutes for the kiddies food( who were moaning) I asked where the manager was, this same guy making my coffee said that's me! ( he was quite happy for the staff to take the complaining though!) I told him it was disgraceful all the waiting and he replied 25 minutes was acceptable! The food came out 10 minutes after that making it 35 minutes. Well I think you need to go on a customer service course as this is totally unacceptable! The pub wasnt even that busy .We live close by and the last time myself and husband went in for a drink in the evening there was 1 person serving, we waited ages and the tables were disgraceful as no one was collecting glasses, I thought I'd give it another try, but sorry this is the last time now that we will support it....... UPDATE.after owner replying to this review saying he woukd contact me...it is now nearly 2 week later and he never phoned me!!! Says it all

Visited again today with our three granddaughters, food not quite as good as previous visits, ladies toilets no soap in dispensers. Staff always helpful

Our meal was ordered at 6.45 and was told hour wait at 8 .10 still no meal was about to complain but the meal came the waitress said sorry for the wait no onion or salad on the burger a lot of other people complained some walking out some asked for money back it was the worst hungry horse been to wasn't like that few months ago when went sorry we will not be going back

Ordered 2 burgers. After 60 mins I asked how long and was told 10 minutes, in total it Took 1hr 25minutes . After 1hr10mins we went inside as the sun had gone down, we informed a member of staff who said it was OK. The waitress who eventually brought the food was rude and said she'd been wondering around outside (she also said our friends hadn't ordered the wings not brought (before bringing two sets of wings out when a member of staff was shown the app order...). The manager was rude when challenged which we really didn't expect. We've been coming to this pub since it opened over 10 yrs ago, this was by far the worst experience we've had not only in this pub but in any pub.

Been tonight with my kids as I booked waited for staff to seat us. They didn't come so found my own seat ordered online as you couldn't get to the bar for all the dirty glasses. Waited over a hr for the food despite asking staff a few times about where the order was.The food had cold spots and I ordered off the gluten free menu and within 20mins started with stomach ache and needing the bathroom worse experience every and staff didn't care. Even saw a staff member holding a lid of a bun with her finger to take to the customer.

Nice calm place to eat at midweek lunchtime. Staff friendly and helpful. Food nice for the price.

Terrible pub, incompetent staff, cold food and dirty tables. We waited 45 minutes for a cold wrap, and a further 20 minutes for ice cream. Reminded staff 3 times about ice cream.

I didn't want to leave a review as everything and everyone should be judged on their own merit ..... however ......... This place needs closing down to be refurbished, new management trained and a new approach to customer relations. The amount of staff who have left shows why the place needs closing. It's actually depressing walking into the place to be met by miserable staff - I'm not going to name names but it's the same person everyone on the village talks about for all the wrong reasons (miserable/rude/ignorant). Just a very rude individual who shouldn't be to work front of house/manager/team leader whatever role she is. From what was a very welcoming pub, I personally will be avoiding until changes are made. I feel for the few decent staff that are left. The Bobbin Mill is the exact opposite of the above. More expensive and further away but at least your welcomed each and every time by people who actually want you there.

We have just been there for a meal it was not very good my other half had a breakfast he did not enjoy it at I had a Sunday dinner beef was not very good it was warm

Holly served us with a friendly attitude. Absolutely, nothing was too much trouble for her. Our food was hot tasty & served timely I would recommend a visit.

We booked a table for 12 short notice for my nieces birthday. When we arrived we were promptly shown to our table. Brendan came over and explained to us that there was only one chef on and that to get our order out as promptly as possible we should put the order in all together for all courses. He dealt with our drinks order quickly and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal. Our family meals can be quite chaotic to say the least and we were pleasantly surprised with the service. Thanks

I came on a Sunday and had the Tandoori chicken sizzler. It was absolutely delicious with great tasting chicken and good accompaniments. Bar staff were friendly and serving staff too. Delivered swiftly and couldn’t fault it.

Very busy, book a table before getting settled otherwise you can find that the table you are sitting on gets booked and you have to move , Staff nice and friendly even though it was very busy, Some good offers,

A great afternoon had with friends, staff actually smiling, caring, and attentive to customers. So obliging have to say the food was some of the best we have had, and I have been to a few of the Hungry Horse chain. My friend is a vegetarian and had the mushroom and veg pie and said it's the best she had ever had. The bonus was the pub classics of which that was one was two for £12.49. We will definitely be back soon. Thank you Ainsley, and Brenda and chef Mark.

Absolutely amazing service. Food and portion size was unbelievable. Manager came and personally checked everything was OK. We did the feed a family for £15 offer plus drinks and desserts which were gone in seconds so I think they were a hit too!

Not excellent at all. Lack any care for customers and the management just can’t get the staff ratio correct. The wait for a drink and food is excessive even when no one is waiting.

Absolutely atrocious food. “Rare steak” came incredibly well done.

Absolutely abhorrent service, people waiting 20 minutes to even have someone come seat people and we were half way down the queue so even worse. Was much better with previous management, loyal quiz goer and patron no more!

Had some good offers on which made the pricing very good and all of the food arrived quickly, all hot and portion sizes were spot on. Will definitely be back.

Served by Ainsley, and no issues when ordering for 5 people. Food was great. Had a slight issue with the pint pulled but the bar manager replaced it with no issue.

Came here with my partner and children last week, and will never return. Having been to many green King pubs this is the worst I've ever been to. Only 1 disabled toilet available both male and female toilets closed. Drunk women falling over my children and I wouldn't mind but had small children themselves. Tables full of dirty plates and empty glasses. Not enough staff serving behind the bar food taking forever to come to the table approx 1 hr wait. No apology or explanation from a rather unapproachable lady that was stood behind the bar not sure of her name. In essence this pub should be visited by green King and placed into emergency measures at the earliest opportunity.

Food was Awfull, overcooked like shoe leather burgers, cost £13. Srvice at the bar very slow. Staff like buses came in 3s. Overall, horid experiance.

I attended to play poker and ordered a meal. 1 hour 15 minutes later it had not arrived. Meal cancelled. No apology. No explanation. No eye contact. Several female customers were clearly very drunk (8.30pm) with children in tow. (Someone must have served them drinks 🙄) The staff member was in danger of being assaulted but walked away leaving the women screaming at the top of their voice. Really poor service and clearly a pub not on top of its game. (Former head of police licensing - retired.) If I was still serving I'd take them to review. If I find this again on my return visit, I may just do that as a private citizen. Disgracefully run venue, breaching at least two of the 4 licensing objectives.

Customer service was poor. Wouldn't come back. Toilets were awful. Long wait for food.

After finally finding a table without other peoples leftovers on it and one of the still staff cleaning it, we chose what we wanted off a sticky menu and went to the bar where I was asked 'can I help you' after standing there for 5 mins. I asked to order some food and a rather sour faced staff member asked if I'd booked. I said no (never have before) and was told they were only taking orders from customers that had booked tables for the next half hour due to them being busy. She said we could sit and wait but we didn't. Why bother having a sign saying find a table and order at the bar or via app. I did notice that the cleanliness wasn't up to standard and was quite dirty in fact. Went to the Hartwood instead and were treated like royalty.

The food service was excellent, but the wait time for the food was quite long. It took over an hour for us to receive our food.

Get rid of these managers they are running the pub into the ground. Good staff are leaving by the drones cutting staff hours not being visible when things get tough. AVOID bobbin mill is better. I feel for Pippa and Jess as this is going to end one way

my previous review was 5* that is when Martyn run the pub. now we have 2 people that are incompetent to say the least! staff turn over is unreal cutting hours the staff morale is on its knees on a got Friday evening 2 bar staff on with co manager looking like a face that thunders Not very welcoming at all. To que on a Friday 20 mins for 1 pint is a disgrace. Green King have a look at what's going on here or you will lose this pub in 12 months

We can recommend the war horse once again. The food was excellent, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was just perfect. Had a great night. Thanks, guys.

Yum yum your burger filled my belly and made me very happy happy

Usually we have a positive experience however today it was awful. Food was cold on arrival. Sausage under cooked. Salad that was just lettace had a long blond hair in it, which i mentioned to bar staff. Bar staff promptly put long hair into bin and didnt let kitchen know. Only one side of chips came out and we had to have them check menu before they would give 2nd portion. Overall not the best experience. Also have previously had pie but wouldnt gwt it again as i dont like microwaved pie but thats just a personal preference the ibside of pie was nice

The place was buzzing as the football was on, it created a fantastic atmosphere in there. The service was okay, but did have to ask for our plates to be cleared. The food was not great at all, my partners steak was overcooked, my mixed grill was inedible, and my stepdaughters wrap was wrapped in a totally strange way that it took her 10 mins to work out how to eat it, and when she did, it was just falling apart. We were offered a dessert, but even that wasn't great. I don't think we will be returning any time soon 😔

Went in for the Switzerland game in the quarter final of the Euros. The place was packed but the quality of service and food did not dip. Caroline, in particular, was an enormous help in arranging to table perfectly for our viewing and then helping to book again for the Semis. Thank you Caroline.

Great service. Was at in the beer garden in the rain waiting for football to start. Server Caroline helped us out with a seat inside.

The service at warhorse was amazing and polite i enjoyed the classic chicken Newyorker it was wonderful and the people are nice and very good atmosphere.

The warhorse is our local, it has a lovely atmosphere, the staff are always friendly, James is great always stops chats, asks if we need anything, the food was very tasty, the Korean burgers are delicious, as always looking forward to our next visit 😀

Food was good and waiter was very pleasant.

I ordered a sizzling 28 day matured 8ounce sirloin steak. With sweet potato fries and coleslaw. I have had this dish previously, and I enjoyed it so I decided to try it again. Bad idea, the first steak arrived, and even with the knife supplied, it was impossible to cut through, even my niece couldn’t cut it, just gristle. I asked for a new one, which took 20 minutes to get back to me. I did try to cut it, but then asked my niece to do it. She did manage, most of it, again very, very gristly, I managed three bits, then had to leave the rest. The waitress came over and asked if we had finished, I again complained, she just said sorry, no offer of a refund or anything. That wil be the last time I recommend the pub to anyone. Very disappointed

Lovely food and great service

I tend to come in on Wednesdays for the quiz. Colin is a great quiz host and a really nice guy, made us all feel very welcome and the quiz is great, I like all the different types of rounds it has. There are some good food and drink deals available. Last time I was in I had a chicken burger, food was served quickly and was tasty. There's a good sized car park. Also an outside play area for the kids.

The second time we've been there, the food was great, had chicken & smoked bacon wrap. The portion size ample, so good I had no room for dessert.

Decent pub grub, reasonably priced food and drink, friendly staff, although generally short staffed. Nice beer garden. Green King could do with putting their hand in a pocket and spending some money on a good local pub on a busy village

Absolutely awful experience at the War horse on a bank holiday Monday. Ordered food for the feed the family for £15. Order came to way over £30 until we asked. The bar man then said I was ordering what you said- rather rude and wasn’t very helpful in what we should actually be ordering. We waited for over 20 mins for food then a lady came and said did they tell you it’s a 40 minute wait for food? We had 2 very hungry toddlers and a child. The bar man did not mention the 40 mins wait otherwise we wouldn’t have bothered. The whole experience was a shambles and we will definitely not be returning again.

Went here today for brunch and was incredibly disappointed. We ordered at around 10.40 am and the guy taking the order was clearly lacking confidence with the til system. However, he got help and we got our juices and two of thr four hot drinks. By 11, we still only had two hot drinks and no food. We had heard other tables complain about wait times and decided to ask. Upon asking, one of the servers said they would check and within moments two dishes came out. One of them was wrong and missing items and the other was tepid, at best. The remaining two coffees still hadn't made an appearance. A third plate was then brought out with one piece of bacon which was grey and another which was rock hard. By the time to final plate arrived we had decided we were going to go elsewhere. It was a good job, too, because the final plate was dirty underneath and there was egg shell by the side of the food. Absolutely shocking service especially as customers pay when ordering. As awful as it sounds, I saw at least two other tables with food and no customers so it seems that it wasn't a one off for us today. Such a shame as we have been there before but will definitely not be returning again.

We took a party of 20 last night. From booking, to preordering to the actually night was really easy! Rose, the duty manager on, was very accommodating and very friendly! Even on a busy day with the FA cup final and the fight on, everything was cooked well and everything came out fast and efficiently. Thank you War Horse!! We will definitely return!!

Nice pub but there isn't a lot of seating outside and it's on a busy main road the food is good but there was a lot on the plate for me but still nice

Very understaffed for a busy sunny Sunday afternoon. 15 minute wait at the bar to order. Arrived at 2pm, desserts delivered at 4.30. Had to ask staff to remove starter and mains plates when desserts delivered. Chicken very overcooked.

Always a good night at the quiz night. Colin is a good quiz master. Staff always friendly. I would recommend.

Pub grub that is good value for money. Friendly & helpful staff! Attend every week for the quiz on Wednesdays & have done so for the last 12 months. Colin is fab & really makes the quiz fun having attended other Quiz Live quizzes he's definitely the best host!

Well what can I say they where short staffed and Rose who served and look after us was amazing she was here there everywhere I couldn't tell you if she was bar staff glass collected or shef she was everywhere her and her staff did so well on end of season with only 4 members on

Restaurant was extremely busy. Staff tried very well to keep on top of it. A out of work manager who's day off was called in "rose" and every issue seemed to resume back to normal. All staffing issues on and off the bar was quickly amended. Thank you to all staff on the day for a pleasant and friendly atmosphere regardless of the situation diabolical as waiting times at the bar was 20 minutes plus.

I’ve been to this pub on many occasions. The quiz on Wednesday night is fantastic. Always lots of fun and Colin is a great host. The War Horse team always make you feel welcome. Pippa and James are both great!

This time I went the steak was dead fatty my daughter enjoyed hers she had chicken strips hopefully nxt time be better 🤮

Never enough staff and beer ridiculously over priced. Place is getting run down and scruffy now too. Staff who are there do their best, so this isn’t a criticism of them at all - more so of Greene King. Food is poor as well - generic stodge that all tastes the same. Good for football though I guess - plenty of big tellies. There’s no reason you’d go out of your way to go here if you didn’t live within walking distance

Quality if vegetarian food is not good. The "new" lasagna is terrible. Looks dreadful. Taste is bland. Very little veg or cheese. It's mostly sauce and a few sheets of pasta. I would be embarrassed to send this out of the kitchen.

Nice staff and nice environment

This is our local, we visit fairly frequently in the warmer months and the staff are always great. One in particular stands out.. Jessica. Give this girl a pay rise! She is so personable, always goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is happy, great with our kids. Exceptional service and keeps us coming back. Great to see.

What can I honestly say about this pub? Just amazing from start to finish cheap food and drinks, tasty food and drinks and amazing staff, I should also mention we came on the quiz night, WOW! Such an amazing atmosphere and the host Colin I think? Went for breakfast there was a 55 minute wait because of an incident in the kitchen, as some oil had been spilt on the floor. We didn't mind waiting as the staff kept us fully updated. The waitress who took our order and served us our order was lovely and very attentive.

My friend booed 5 of us in for breakfast in sunday the 28/4/24. Website says it opens at 9 am. On arrival the doors were locked but lights on. This was 9 20 am. At 9.30 lights were switched off and no sign of staff. Don’t bother going here. We went to harvester across the road and had no issues. Won’t be giving them our business in the future 😡

We booked war horse for our sons 18th birthday meal , there was 24 of us ... staff were amazing... food was so good massive thanks to Ester for all the help and running round after us all and the manager for all her help to with sorting the area and stuff ...

Yet again, another fab evening at War Horse! The staff here are very friendly and welcoming, especially James! Went above & beyond to ensure our evening went well! We had ordered the Crown of Burgers of their super special menu, delicious! 😋& to top it off we got a free fudge cake! Everything was great!

1 person on the bar, on a busy Saturday. When challenged why, 5 staff came from the back room. A waitress was asked to help a disabled man and ignored him. I had to carry his drink outside and make sure he was seated ok.

Server Amy and chef Matt supplied us with a lovely breakfast everyday this week. Would definitely recommend eating here

Good service with good food, pity about the floor outside, being flags they are uneven and not easy in a wheelchair.
