The Red Lion in Cheshire West and Chester

The pub was very quiet last week when we arrived for a last minute dinner booking with family. We want to support our local pub but once again we had a very poor experience. Our first & second meal choices were unavailable, service was unwelcoming & surly, no atmosphere & we were the last ones there at 815! We got the feeling thepub just wasn’t bothered about us being there which was sad 😢

For those of you who have read my previous reviews will know that I say it as it is when it comes to food. I ordered the slow cooked pork belly roast as did two others in our group. This was supposed to be served with crackling and apple which none of us received, the roast potatoes were very overdone to the point where some were black and impossible to cut. The pork itself was well cooked as were the vegetables, which consisted of approximately 1/4 to 1/2 a serving spoon of cabbage, one small Florette of broccoli , three small pieces of roasted parsnip and 1/2 a roasted carrot, accompanied by a small gravy boat of gravy (which was very nice). All in all very disappointing not only for the missing items and the potatoes but also the portion size of vegetables which to be honest was less than the recommended child’s size.

Charmain & Paul, Monday 14th A brilliant 2 course meal, great efficient service with a smile. Busy and lovely, everything was perfect

Lunch out for 2. We found it good value for money, served by Kate who was attentive without being intrusive. Good choice on the menu, the beetroot and pumpkin arancini was delicious as was the chicken, bacon and avocado salad. Tomato soup was flavoursome, and the fish cakes were so nice. All in all a really enjoyable lunch out ☺️Added bonus was the use of the blue light discount 👍🏻

As we live in East Sussex and only visit North Wales once a year, we don't get to the Red Lion anything like as often as we would wish. However, whenever we do come up, we ALWAYS have an evening meal with you. Our keenness to call is based on the quality of food, prices, the loveliness of the building - both inside and out - and, far from least, the great service and welcome we receive from the staff. Sorry it'll be a while, but see you next year, Red Lion!

Absolutely delicious meal. Managed to book a romantic meal for two. We had the Sunday dinner and it was perfect. The beef was pink and succulent and the meals were so big. Then we had to treat ourselves to desert, as we could not resist. Sticky toffee pudding and Crème Brule….wow! Will definitely be back, thanks to all the team, especially Emma.

Lovely Christmas meal in a vintage village gastro pub . Friendly staff, reasonable prices , Christmas pudding sauce could be improved upon but otherwise great Edit : having just tried the signature burger , which has to be the worst burger in the world , with nothing taken off the bill and no apology from the staff, I'd rate this place 2 star and steer clear , Just tried this place again, 30/09/2024 Had the lamb , over cooked , tough as boots with mushy tender stem broccoli, waited after being served to the point of having to ask to get our drink order taken . Awful staff, food just going down hill

The food and the atmosphere in the pub were both excellent; service was a little slow (for the kids!) but the pub has such a nice ambience about it that it was just nice to sit and chat for a while...plus it was Sunday Lunchtime so it was busy anyway!

Food is absolutely gorgeous chef is spot on with his food. Staff were lovely and made us feel welcome. We had 4 starters and every single plate was cooked to perfection. Steak and lamb for mains and again both meats we delicious. Will definitely be returning

Today went for lunch. My aubergine gratin had no cheese on it and my friends found their food was not very hot.

Service was poor, got order wrong, food average, got the bill wrong. Won’t be back !

Went with friends to celebrate a birthday. Despite the pub being very quiet the service was poor. Waited ages for someone to take our order then waited 25-30 minutes for the food to come. Got the order wrong. When the food did come the food was very average. Got the bill and was over charged. Not impressed at all. Won’t be rushing back if not at all !

Lovely place, service was excellent. We were a group of 5 , 2 fussy eaters . I personally have been before and rated the pizzas highly. The 2 fussy eaters both love pizzas . Unfortunately we were told when we got seated there was no pizzas . Total disappointment!! I had the lamb with potatoes and veg £23.95 , I couldn't belive how small the portion was. I was still hungry 😩 after it. Very disappointed. Good quality 👌. Please up portion sizes.

Took our order and lost it so had to come retake it 30mins later to also tell us ran out of pizza dough should have left at this point, I had chicken burger which was poor!! other food was ok, can see why there was no one in there

No cask beer despite Doom Bar and Wainwright pump clips being on show. No reason given as to why fresh barrel couldn't be put on.

We called for lunch on the way home from a hospital appointment, we had our dog with us. Food was very nice but unfortunately we were overcharged and contacted the pub , they said someone would call us. We received no call, we rang again only to be told that the person was busy and would ring us back. Again no call back. Unfortunately it is incidents like this that mean we will not be going back as it is not difficult to ring back and rectify the issue. Customer service rubbish!!!!

Went out for lunch meal was excellent quality good value for money. We both had the burger and extra onion rings. One of the best burgers around.

The food was really beautiful and very plentiful. The staff were lovely, friendly and efficient. The only issue I have is that in parts it is a little run down which is a shame but generally the place was clean and very relaxed atmosphere.

Great pub quiz on Tuesdays hosted by Verity. Very good atmosphere and attention from all staff. Food is always good (vegan options and kids menu too)

The Eton mess was served with only cream no fruit or meringue but Emma was great and took away and sorted it.

I visited the red lion today and ordered food, service was quick to start and the drinks were very quick, we ordered and the food came about 20 to 25 minutes later which I thought was very acceptable, my wife had steak pie and mash ( in her words it was lovely) I ordered a steak medium to well done with a side of garlic mushrooms, my chips and mushrooms were very good but unfortunately the steak was one of the toughest I’d ever had and it was rare to medium which I didn’t mind but it was impossible to chew, i tried 4 pieces from different parts of the steak to see if it was just an odd part but they were all the same so I left the rest of the steak on the side which was at least 95% of it ,I have steak at every occasion when eating out and in so many countries but This was by far the poorest, we stayed and had puddings which were very nice, at the end of our meal the lady that had serviced us told me that she’d applied discount for the steak which was £12 off the near £27 meal, in my opinion my meal had been ruined and therefore should have been totally wiped off the bill as a good will gesture, it’s unlikely that we will be going back unfortunately

Delicious food, great atmosphere & very friendly despite our hysterics

All the staff are always helpful and friendly, Emma who has served us n a number of occasions, as she did on Saturday, always seems to go that extra mile which e really appreciated.

Booked a table for 5 in the dog friendly area, got there hadn't reserved our table so put us in the bar area by the toilets and said we could have table service, brought our drinks and meals and that was it. Meal was average, 20 quid for Sunday roast. Nobody came to ask if the meal was okay or if we wanted more drinks. Asked for French mustard, told don't provide that in England, might have found it funny if service had been better. When clearing plates cleared 2 and didn't come back for the rest. odd. Toilets need a bit of a clean too, urinals out of order, only one cubicle, cobwebs hanging from the ceiling Low score due to poor service.

Another excellent meal at the Red Lion this evening with very efficient service by Emma and the team.

my server was a young man with his sleeves rolled up and a tattoo on his right arm, such a gentleman and had a good laugh even though we knew he was busy and had a lot of people to serve, we could hear people telling him to do different things yet he kept a smile whilst serving us, food was amazing and the atmosphere was just want we wanted on this day we will definitely be coming again 100%

Lovely Father's Day meal at the Red Lion. Curry, Sea Bass and Fish and Chips all well presented with efficient and friendly service by Emma.

Excellent service, delicious food and friendly atmosphere.

Went for lunch last week with my husband, son and granddaughter, aged 3 & three quarters. Husband had beef lasagne, small portion Son had lamb cutlet, really enjoyed Granddaughter had pasta in tomato sauce, nearly all eaten I had aubergine bake (I make this myself, have done for over 35 years) in a tomato sauce with cheese, I serve it with spaghetti and garlic bread, sorry to say, mine is better! Didn't feel like a full meal without the pasta. However, we had a lovely time, attentive, professional staff, fabulous pub, sat where we wanted as no booking for our table at the time. We would definitely eat here again. Have been before hence return, aware meal times can be very busy as very popular pub for dining. Thank you 👍

Food was lovely we had 2 steaks and cheesy garlic mushrooms to start delicious, beef dripping sauce was amazing. Let downs were the scruffy toilet door to the ladies and staff gossiping about other staff which YES we could hear...very unprofessional!!

Lovely little pub in a nice location. Plenty of seating inside and out. Warm ambiance inside and great selection of food and drinks. Looking forward to stopping of there and recharging during my charity event in 2 weeks time.

We visit here fairly regularly and usually its fine but sadly this visit didn’t come up to scratch.Main meals were barely hot except for the chicken pie and we were never even asked if we wanted a dessert.Hope this was just an off night but we won’t be back for a good while as we expect better for the prices charged.Also the doors to the toilets are very scruffy .Just a coat of paint required.

2 of us ordered deep fried Brie - it arrived dressed with old dead leaves and was cold. Had expected it to be melted. One had pate which was liberally sprinkled with rock salt - she's on a low sodium diet as are many others. 2 of us had fush and chips. Have never been served with such an awful meal. The batter was disgustingly thick and eggy and the only way we could eat the fish was to take the batter off. After telling the waitress she apologised and said she'd tell the chef. Sometime later, as we ordered desserts, we asked if she'd told the chef. She said he'd said "sorry" and that he has someone in training. If "someone" isn't capable of sending out good quality food under supervision one or both shouldn't be in the kitchen!!! Finally, the desserts arrived with very dead, curled up and brown mint on top. On remonstrating to the girl about it she said it was their fault as it had been under the hot lamp and they hadn't picked it up soon enough. One was creme brulee which shouldn't have been under heat, the other was brownie with ice cream consequently the ice cream was melted. I told her it was no excuse that she could see it was withered and dead and she should have had the presence of mind to take it off. Yes they took the price of desserts off the final bill but that wasn't the aim. Would have been happier to.pay full price and have a good meal. We were told in advance thst since the manager, Susan, left it had gone down. We should have listened!!!!

Lovely pub, great location on this occasion the food was disappointing. We had sirloin steak that was tough and difficult to very cut. I found it difficult to eat. The chicken pie looked gorgeous but was tasteless and bland. The service as always was excellent I think they knew the meal was not up to standard they never asked if we were enjoying it.

Lovely local pub, welcomed new patriots with warmth. Would recommend.

My server was luke who was amazing, greeted us straight away and took our drink order quickly. once the food was brought out it was delicious and luke made sure everyone was happy and cleared our plates quickly and brought desserts out. I’ve never had better service than i received today from luke. Good Job!

Previous visit lovely food and great service, what happened in last year, have you changed food supplier? Last visit I ordered hunters chicken which should be renamed because it certainly wasn't that. It was a burnt fritter and quite frankly awful. Service felt rushed, even though the place was quiet.

Lovely place. Nice food. Not cheap but really nice atmosphere. Nice outside space. Plenty of parking.

Having been to this establishment now 4 times the food is OK but there is just something about the place I cannot put my hand on compared to other pubs in the group with better food and atmosphere I.e . Chimneys and the Cheshire cat

We have been coming here for a few years now and we always have great food and receive a friendly welcome and service.

Portion size could have been bigger

Excellent service, and tasty food! We visited for my father in laws 80th birthday with the month in law and my wife. During our visit a little boy went missing from the pub, and things were a bit manic, police outside and everything. The pub and its staff couldn’t do anything about it, and even though staff were helping find the boy, service wasn’t compromised at all. The little boy was found, and all was good. We will absolutely revisit, the fish and chips were unreal.

Fantastic food! Lasagna is amazing!! Hope the young lady that served us was very attentive and showed pride in her job. Next time will be asking for caramelised onion with my cheese starter lol

Friendly service and lovely food, the only thing I thought could have been better were the chips, didn't seem to be home made.
