We decided on Sunday morning to try the Red Lion for lunch, and booked a table for 1330. We arrived and were met by efficient staff who were expecting us and offered us a choice of table. Drinks were ordered from a knowledgeable waiter and arrived quickly, mine being a very well-kept pint from tge local Amwell Springs brewery. We both chose beef from an extremely well thought-out menu which again arrived after only a short wait. The meat was beautifully cooked and presented on a large plate with very well cooked greens, carrots and a freshly-made Yorkshire puddings. Sides of cauliflower cheese and roast potatoes were excellent, probably the best roasties I've had, and the horseradish was similarly delicious. We both cleared our plates and the side dishes. Utterly gorgeous, go and see for yourself.

A lunch with a friend. We weren't very impressed - the place has a run-down feel - quite dark inside and there's what we thought was quite a dangerous step between the bar and restaurant. Having said that, the service was very good and the food, while not memorable, was adequate and filling. We haven't thought about going back!

I had heard from friends that the Red Lion in Cholsey was worth a visit so finally managed to get there over the Diamond Jubilee weekend. The first thing that strikes you is how genuinely friendly the staff are. They really couldn’t do enough for us. The menu choice was good. My friend and I shared a starter. Again no problem for the staff. The main meal was excellent. We enjoyed our visit so much we went again the next day and enjoyed the same experience. I’ll definitely go again. They also have a take away menu so planning to do that too. Great job Red Lion Cholsey!

With 35 of us arriving for our annual extended family reunion we occupied all of the large room at the very end of the bar. We had the Christmas Party Menu and the choices were good and the food was excellent with very generous portions and all delivered by 2 smiling waitresses and we were all very well fed by the end! This is a traditional English village pub and at Christmas time with a big tree in the bar and a fine selection of beers and great food with a large car park it deserves to do well. Go and enjoy 10/10.

For the past 10 years we have held our pre-Christmas family lunch at the Bear In North Moreton. Up until last year this has always been an excellent venue. As a replacement the Red Lion in Cholsey came highly recommended. There were twelve of us so we booked a few weeks in advance and then re-confirmed it a few days before our visit on Sunday 22nd December - a perfect start to Christmas - you would have thought. When we arrived we were shown to a table where only 10 places were laid and 11 chairs. The menu was handed to us a it contained no Christmas fayre - other than some pigs in blankets - no turkey or duck, just ordinary Sunday lunch. No Chrsitmas crakers or anything else remotely festive hindered our table. We asked 3 times for the additional pieces of cutlery and they finally arrived after the food. We collected the extra chair ourselves. We arrived at 1pm and it was nearly half past before our orders were taken. The waitress gave the impression that she was recording requests on her pad but that transpired to be a fallacy.. It was after 2pm when the food arrived and was served by one waitress who took about 10 minutes to get all the meals on the table. The first ones delivered were cold by this time. She also didn't seem to know the difference between beef blades and rump of beef and as a result handed people the wrong food. The food was fine, not by any means exceptional but well cooked and presented. Orders for desserts were made and I think two out of 5 were correct. One asked for 2 scoops of ice cream - the waitress argued that 2 hadn't been ordered although everyone, with the exception of the waitress, knew that it had been, a child's order of ice cream was completely forgotten and a 3rd was different to the order. Probably won't go back!!

We’ve used the Red Lion a few times since moving to the village, evenings have been variable but lunches were good. I booked tonight to make it up to my partner as we spent his Birthday at his Grandmother’s funeral this week. We’d popped in at lunch to book and weren’t warned that they were going to be too busy to accommodate us. When we arrived we were served two drinks, then left for some time with no one taking our order (not short of staff, just all staff focusing on the same two larger tables). This wasn’t particularly annoying on its own, but the music was then turned up so loud we had to shout at each other, and with the noise of the people next to us shouting too, we decided to leave (this was still very early in the evening). We went to the bar and asked if we could pay for the two soft drinks we’d had, no one asked if there was a problem, so we paid and off we went to collect the car and find somewhere else to go. Disappointed, but not ready to be too negative about it. That was until about 20 minutes later, when I received a truly horrible phone call from a female staff member from the Red Lion accusing us of walking out without paying our bill. Clearly phoning customers you’ve already annoyed and accusing them of theft is easier than checking with the other staff first. Horrible end to an unpleasant evening, not only will we never return but I’ve already prevented the booking of a pre-Christmas friend’s lunch there next week. Awful service.

I'd recommend this to anyone and bring friends from out of the area whenever they visit.

As per usual having to wrestle through the sun typical Sunday regulars who glance and glare because you're not part of their clique'. Arriving back from a lovely day in Henley all we wanted was a couple of drinks. But the curvy tattooed barlady, completely blanked us and without even being acknowledged then had the cheek to serve three chaps saying what can I get you. Absolute disgrace of an establishment. Never again. Need to learn some decent manners. The place stinks of being dragged up. Not bought up, which is a shame. As we've had a couple of nice meals there midweek. Though this had seemed to be by way of apology, we found at the end that they had charged us for them. Which is fine, but it was also odd. The food didn't quite justify the wait. 05.05.2017. Visited here for the first time with a friend after reading the Trip Advisor reviews. Table booked for 6pm.On arrival having parked, I was impressed with the beer garden and outside décor of the building. Lots of people sitting outside. We went into the packed bar and received a warm welcome and shown to our table in the restaurant (we were the first in there!). I knew one of the wait staff from a previous venue where she used to work. We ordered our drinks and waited for our pre-ordered meal (when booking table). The drinks arrived swiftly. We love the grey interior of the walls, the wooden furniture and floor. Very tastefully done. Our food came out beautifully presented. I had the trout with new potatoes, asparagus, lemon wedges and a delicious jus. My friend had the bean burger, skinny fries, onion rings in beer batter, fresh coleslaw and baked beans (got in especially for him!), again beautifullly presented. The food was delicious, the trout succulent and flavoursome. I shared the onion rings and coleslaw with my friend.Desserts: I had a chocolate ? served with berries and cream, whilst my friend chose strawberry cheesecake with berries and cream. Both yet again, served beautifully. Our only comment which both of us agreed upon, is to serve them with clotted cream!!! Then we would have been in heaven! All in all, no faults with anything. The staff were friendly and attentive, without being intrucive.Definitely will be returning and I highly recommend.

All the food very tasty albeit a very limited menu. I think this was the right thing to do by starting off with a few very good dishes rather than too many and getting it wrong. Perhaps nows the time to consider adding a couple more dishes. A fish maybe (not battered as thats already on) Staff attentive so well done keep it up will come again

Popped into this pub midway through an 8 mile walk as wanted a lunch - it was 14:10. Around 8 people eating and no customers at the bar.Very friendly lady (later found out called Theresa) welcomed us and offered us seating in the prepared dedicate dining room however we chose the bar area as we're in walking gear with layers of jackets / rucksack etc.Theresa clearly explained menu choice and took the drinks order, returning quickly with them; She was a very friendly / bubbly person and chatty without being intrusive. We both decided in fish (haddock) and chips although there was lots in the menu that we would have eaten, it's just we had promised ourselves fish and chips for a fortnight and not got around to it. Most meals appeared to be around £10 with baguettes etc available for around £6.50.It arrived promptly and was perfect, a medium sized haddock, plenty of crisp (non greasy) chips, green peas, tartare sauce and a wedge of lemon. It was all superbly cooked and nothing was wasted - all eaten. My partners only criticism (hers not mine) was that the fish had some ground rock salt added to it prior to serving. We both never add salt to anything but that being said it had absolutely no negative effect on the meal and as stated previously all was eaten. Both meals and two drinks came to £26 which considering the quality of food was very good indeed. It had to be said that the pub is in superb decorative order and presented to a very high standard - somewhere you can take any older person and know that they will enjoy the ambiance.I did note that they cater for children too with plenty of activity books to keep them entertained. Also the music they played was at the correct volume and a superb selection.I worked for over 15 years in the on trade drinks industry for Guinness & Carlsberg and visited many thousands of establishments during that time. This venue I can say from a lot of real experience is a fantastic food led outlet that will satisfy the more mature person who wants a nice time out without any aggro andalso keep those who appreciate a drink happy with an excellent selection to choose from. From the standard of presentation I am sure they will not allow any trouble here and they deserve to do really well.

We came down for Sunday lunch and it was excellent. Really great roast beef and lamb. The customer service was very good and the desert was lovely. Shame there was no coffee machine, but still worth 5 stars.

This is the second time we've eaten here in the last month and had to write a review - such a fab, local pub, that is very welcoming. We've had delicious home cooked Sunday lunch both times we've been, cooked beautifully, great range of beers and wine and lovely staff. Has retained traditional pub feel, but with comfortable furnishings and dog friendly too. Love it and has become a firm local favourite.

Popped in for some food with the family and the warm was very welcome. Great service and happy and friendly staff. The food is fantastic, I have a food allergy and always worry about whether food is ok for me. I had nothing to worry about tonight, the menu gives an indication of what the food contains but the chef is more than happy to adapt to your needs as the food is freshly cooked to order. I was even able to have onion rings, haven't had those in ages - yum yum Will definitely be back to enjoy the great atmosphere and try some more of the fab food.

Thanks to the new management The Red Lion is firmly back on our radar - so lovely to have a warm, welcoming village pub serving great food :) We stopped off for lunch after a walk with our two small boys in the week before Christmas. Friendly welcome, pint of ale and a glass of good Syrah. Our boys were delighted with a box of toys that kept them entertained until food arrived. The service was caring and thoughtful from both the manager and waiter - eg putting cutlery/condiments on the adjacent table to avoid disrupting a precious building block tower, and giving us warning of our food on its way so that we could tidy up and make space. Little things but really appreciated. The food was very good - childrens' meals generous, fish and chips, burger and sausages all delicious. The sausages were a particular hit - from the local butcher and probably the best I've had. Looking for excuses to go back and will now be number one on our list for a local pub meal.

We came here today after a long country walk and it was just perfect. A friendly welcome and attentive staff, great, reasonably priced food and a lovely atmosphere. The new owners have got it just right.

So, some background. Four very passionate locals have taken on this pub with a view to making it the local pub they would love to be in. None of them have any previous experience but all of them have a huge desire to make it work. There is a temporary chef in there at the moment and they are looking for a new, permanent chef and manager in the New Year. This should help to explain why the menu is a bit limited at the moment and certain processes or standards aren't quite in place (as pointed out by a couple of other reviewers). However, these are all temporary issues and, actually, minor ones at that. We were a party of 11 celebrating a birthday on 15th December. We had fantastic service, despite the pub being packed to the rafters, and the atmosphere was great. The food isn't gastropub standard but Cholsey doesn't need a gastropub. Cholsey needs a friendly, welcoming pub serving good, standard pub food that is great value for money and that is what you'll find here at the Red Lion. We love our new local.

Disappointing after reading the rave reviews the menu was limited and food was average the starter was soup or nothing. The staff were friendly enough but probably won't return

Came for dinner tonight with my husband to try the new pizza. Both very disappointed. The pizza's very overly doughy, undercooked and resembled microwave pizza. Certainly not a thin crispy wood fired pizza as expected. The pub grub all looked good, service was fine and the pub cosy.... Just avoid the pizza!

We visited from abroad and were pleasantly surprised by our dinner at the Red Lion. We were a party of 9 and were served efficiently. The menu had a wide spectrum of choices but not to many (suggesting that these were not warmed up frozen meals). I liked the imaginative use of generally available items - some of the meals were served on chopping boards and the chips (fries to us Americans) were served in plant pots. The only complaint was it was my nieces 13th birthday and there was no special fuss made of her - maybe this is another difference between the US and U.K.

A lovely dog friendly pub with friendly staff and great food! A little off the beaten track but well worth the journey. The open fire and historic atmosphere definitely made us feel cozy in bad weather

Great spot for a little family lunch. Sandwiches & cakes are delicious, nice surroundings & friendly staff. There’s also a box of books for kids to amuse themselves with. Not inexpensive but lovely for a treat.

Back at last shame it was Shaun and Gemma’s night off. Very quiet Wednesday but we were late arrivals. Made welcome, choice of seating, nice to see pichets of wine on the drinks menu. Had tariiflette which was spot on and a good price as well. Made us feel guilty we don’t go here more often! Oh and they accept cash!

Really nice warm individual atmosphere. Food was great and just what we needed before a long day the following. We overnight-ed in room 3 which had everything needed. I Managed to run an international meeting at 0600 so wifi was strong. Breakfast next day was really good and ready when we asked for it. Highly recommend The Fat Fox if you want to dodge the corporate bs and feel like a name not a number.

Having driven past for 20 years I finally took heed of the positive reviews and visited for a quick business lunch. We will not return. Nice building, pleasant layout. Cold reception from a disinterested young man in tracksuit at the bar, hardly bursting at the seems with the good and great of Henley, this was a very down market experience. Pie and mash with gravy out of a tin did nothing to improve the atmosphere.
