Recently went with friends for my birthday - excellent meal as always. Food was hot and delicious - and their portions are more than generous. Try their Eton Mess Sundae its amazing. Have booked with friends for their Christmas Festive Menu, but will probably be back before then. Can highly recommend this pub for their meals which are excellent value for money and friendliness of the staff

Went recently for a big surprise family meal. Food was hot, lovely and catered for everyone (even my two fussy little eaters who are not easy to feed!) Made to feel welcome every moment we were there by all the staff. Theres also a little play bit for the kids down the bottom of the garden which they thought was amazing!

I attended this pub as part of a large group (26 people). After a 1.5hr wait to get mains. I first requested no gravy on my roast dinner. It was then taken away gravy washed off and returned to me. I tasted it and it tasted off and rancid. I informed staff member, no apology received meal was replaced with another meal. This was off near and smelly too. I asked staff member if they had tried it. I was told chef said it was fine. There were several people in group who had turkey meal too, lots said it tasted odd too. No apology received. Staff member then said oh well we won't charge you for turkey meals then. The pie meal also looked like casserole on a plate with a circle of pastry plonked on the top of it. Veggies and potatoes followed 10 mins later. I will never eat there again or recommend to anyone.

Everywhere was fully booked for meals and we found this little pub with a limited board of food, but thought let’s try it. OMG the food, we both had steak, cooked to perfection, home made chips perfectly salted .. The host, amazing, lit the fire and told us sit by the fire if we wished, didn’t complain that we said we would eat our food around the fire (not a dining table), left us alone to enjoy our evening. Atmosphere was perfect, would like to see people appreciate this country pub, one of the few that have survived.. Host was brilliant, I was well impressed….would definitely recommend visiting..

Ten of us went for Sunday lunch. Speedy service and the roasts were both good portions and good quality, with plenty of vegetables served separately. Still, room left for dessert. And these were all wolfed down, which put paid to conversation, until the bowls were left empty.

We visited this pub one Sunday lunchtime. We took my father who is 95 and a very simple meat and 2 veg man. The menu was clear and not too fussy so he was able to choose easily (What the farmer doesn't know, the farmer doesn't eat!) We chose the Sunday lunch and it was served up, big portions and a nice home cooked style. This pub has a really nice community feel, selling eggs at the bar from their own chickens and ducks. Sure it has an old fashioned interior but i feel that adds to the charm with their collection of piggies all around. I have seen some of the reviews and feel that they are a bit infair. If you want the Ritz, go there and pay their prices! If you want a nice country, family run pub with decent simple food, this is the place to go.

Starters were nice, but cash and carry/iceland type dishes, whitebait, breaded prawns ect. I had a mixed grill which came with far too much tasteless meat on it, sausages were poor cheap quality, 2 pork chops a 1/4 of chicken, again no flavour, the gammon had a hint of flavour, and even the eggs were bland, i don't know if it was all cooked in the same pan and the juices and flavours blended into nothing? the steak was very nice though. I would guess that the chips and peas had been cooked earlier and kept warm in a low temp oven as the peas were a funny grey/green and the chips were dry and no real taste. The worst part of the meal was the raspberry pavalova, comical, 1 shop bought meringue nest, 10 raspberries, squirty cream and raspberry ice cream sauce to decorate. Great work chef, you must be so proud. Never again.

We've been stopping here approx. yearly on our way up to Ely. Arrived at 1pm on a Friday. Got a table in the bar - previously we've been asked to sit in the restaurant. Had 3 courses for £12.95 - Mushroom soup (proper home made), Steak & Kidney Pie (full of succulent meat and a side dish of veg which we shared) and a nice lemon and meringue sundae. We're aware that the pub is now under new management and if this is a good example then they're well on the way to success. Just as we were leaving at 2.10 two large mini van taxis arrived and we could barely get out of the door.Service was attentive, food was excellent - didn't have the beer. Noticed Admans Broadside so onto a winner here.

However, the staff need to engage with customers properly. They must understand the importance of a smile, and talking to people. It’s also a good idea to ask people after a few minutes if their food is OK. When we left at 7.45 there were two people in the restaurant, the bar was empty. Maybe people were arriving later.

La comida era buena y abundante, y han considerablemente más barato que esperaba pagar en Londres (donde estamos). La cerveza era en forma, personal amable, agradable y. Un. On arrival greeted by a very friendly landlord that clearly had a passion for real ales as these were in beautiful condition. Pub very dated with trinkets and ornamental pigs everywhere but that said the place was very clean. My initial thoughts about the menu were that there was far too much on it for the food to be freshly prepared, add to that a specials board and I begin to understand that this is only one of the reasons the food is so awful, the other being the ingredients and cuts of meat are cheap and frozen. Menu also expensive for the location. Starters £5/£8 mains average out at about £13, deserts £6/£7. I reluctantly opted for a Shelled Prawn Boat to start £7.95 as I was concerned at this price it would be an oversized prawn cocktail the may ruin my main but how wrong I was. An oblong plate arrived ( I assume this was the boat! ) with 1 shop sliced slice of brown bread generously coated in cheap margarine, yuk. In the middle was ( I kid you not ) about twelve tiny cheap frozen prawns covered in a dollop of catering mayo, again yuk. At the other end o f the boat! was some very uninspiring salad a bit like I remember from school, with no varied leaves just iceberg crudely chopped, sprinkled with raw white onion. The whole dish was disgusting and honestly would cost no more than 50p to make. The chicken strips £7 were just as bad, 4 frozen chicken nuggets basically with the mandatory horrid salad. The mains were worse, 3 rib-eyes £12.95 each absolutely vial tasting with a strong bitter irony taste. Odd shape too for this cut, very round like they has been cut from a roll and no sign of the fat eye normally found in this cut. However if you like fat you would be disappointed as at least a third of the steak was fat. The other main was a lamb rump, clearly just out the freezer, defrosted, microwaved and served with mint gravy and yes you guessed it, salad! dinners choice to be fair. Chips for all served in a huge dish and grotty luke warm pees. Asking for some English mustard seemed like a chore for the waitress but this was duly banged down on the table before me once half way through the fatty steak. We dared not try the deserts but from what we could see they were all plastered in squirty cream. In summery I feel sorry for the landlord, he was very nice but the waitresses were awful, surly and scary! Will never go back.

Arrived and were shown our seats as soon as we said we didn't want the Christmas menu a rude lady rushed out from behind the bar quickly grabbed the crackers off a table and gave a disgruntled look. We asked if we could have something off the bar menu for one of our seven diners as they wanted something light to eat. She rudely said no and demanded that we have something off the menu in the restaurant. Then when asked for a child's menu for a child who is 12. We were told no as she's apparently not 12... How would this lady know?! So instead they put it in as a special request that she could have something off the child's menu but at a higher price. The prices were silly and the waitress was very very rude. We will not be returning. Not to mention the hideous "Mrs Santa" outfit she was wearing... How tasteful.. NOT.

Before going for lunch I read the reviews and did think about not going as they were so bad but it was actually better than expected! The decor of the restaurant is "interesting" or personally, I found it a little freaky. There are hundreds (and I'm not exaggerating) of pig ornaments and memorabilia in the restaurant and it's unclear exactly why but don't let this put you off!Monday-Fridays at lunch they have a very reasonable 2 courses for £8.95 menu. For this, I had pate and then scampi and salad. Whilst the food wasn't anything to rave about, it was what it was - A good lunch, a big portion and at the end of the day it was £8.95 for 2 courses so who can complain at that? My scampi salad also came with a huge portion of delicious new potatoes as well as potato salad and coleslaw so I thought it was quite good value. The landlady (I assume) was extremely friendly and we had a pleasant lunch. I would go again if I was in the area but I wouldn't make a special trip.

The waitress looked like she didn't want to be there - I wish I would of took a photograph of how the food was served - looked like a child had prepared it - overall very sub standard meal - when we spoke to lady behind bar we were told "we are not wetherspoons" - we expect frozen chips and microwaved food from wetherspoons as this is reflected in the price!! Had recently been approached to visit the red lion by what i thought and was told to be the landlord ( Colin ). Upon visiting with a group of friends we were told to sit down and wait for the waitress. after 30 minutes of waiting a group member asked when were due to be seen and was arrogantly told to sit back down and we will be seen in due time. after what seemed hours of waiting we decided to skip food and order drinks and eat else where. Upon ordering drinks we were served by the chap named colin who attempted to pull a pint and it was probably 95% head 5% beer and was then charged an extorionate price. Overall a shocking experiance would advise any one who is wondering whether to visit stay away at all costs and if approached by this so called landlord i would turn your back and run.

Fantastic place for fish&chips (they let me substitute fries too), for £11 wasn’t expecting a giant fresh perfectly battered cod - best had in ages.
