Late booking made for a dog friendly pub in Bury area for a roast. Great decision to head to The Pykkerell, nice position on high street of Ixworth with lots of on street parking. Great food. We had a starter of garlic mushrooms and curried carrot soup and then 2 beef and pork roasts. Portion sizes really good with Cauliflower cheese included. Highly recommend and will happily return

Booked a table for 3. Bar was busy but the restaurant wasn’t at 7pm on a Saturday. First negative impression was the state of the bar and the dining tables, very very sticky? Secondly, they only had half a bottle of “blush” wine and thirdly, the lasagne portion for one was way too much! Food presentation and table settings could have been better. Because of these negatives we won’t be rushing back. On the upside, the staff and atmosphere were fine.

Went here as a result of a review in a newspaper regarding best places to go for a Sunday roast. Found this to be true to the hype, food was delicious, well portioned and lovely old style pub atmosphere. It's easy to dismiss an eating place when it's almost too close to home to be considered, but that's what we seem to have done with the Pykerell Inn. We are, quite literally, just a stone's throw away. The High Street in Ixworth has seen major ups and downs during the pandemic, but, somehow, the Pykerell Inn has pulled through, with new and enthusiastic management and, importantly, a new menu. The dining areas are traditionally pub-like but still conducive to relaxed eating; they're near the bar, but the divided up space - bare brick and dark panelled wood - offers diners some separation. Our mains of fish & chips and a fish pie were pretty much spot on: good but not silly portion sizes, piping hot, well-cooked accompanying vegetables, and with decent seasoning. Deserts of sticky toffee pudding and fruit crumble with custard were a little too perfectly turned out to be in-house, but the sponge was light and the crumble was crumbly. The custard was Bird's but that can be forgiven. In short, it was a thoroughly decent meal. Next time, we'll walk.

Sadly this will be our last ever visit to the Pykerrell Inn. We’ve been coming here for years but despite many changes in management the freezing cold dining room/lounge remains a problem, which could be easily solved by lighting the log fire but it’s never lit! Our food was lovely, well presented & of good quality but it’s hard to enjoy when eating shivering in your coat, my elderly mum had to eat with her gloves on! & even the waiting staff had on sweatshirts & fleece jackets & yes, this is indoors. Such a shame because with a warmer experience this could be a village gem instead of the local freezer.

Just returned from having the Valentine's set meal with another couple (don't judge us for that!). Two had the smoked salmon starter, one had the leek and potato soup and another had the goats cheese tart. Empty plates all round. 3 steaks with all the trimmings and 1 sea bass for mains... absolutely delicious with the steaks cooked exactly as requested. Only the 2 boys could manage a dessert, which they said were delicious. Along with a bottle of wine per couple and a rose each for the ladies @ £25 per head we had a brilliant evening at a great price. Thank you The Pykkerell x

Visited for dinner as had a lovely lunch here a couple of weeks ago and wasn’t disappointed! There is a good choice of dishes on the menu. My fiancée had the mixed grill which he said was lovely although the peas were missed off it but this was quickly rectified and some brought out. I had vegetable lasagne and chips. This was delicious but I couldn’t believe the size of the fish the lasagne was in and the amount of chips! You could easily have split that between 2 people and still not felt short changed. We were both planning to have dessert but we’re both too full from our main course to fit one in. My advice to the owners would be they the food is lovely and sometimes less is more or you aren’t going to sell many of your desserts if all the portions are as huge as the lasagne and the mixed grill. Will definitely be back though.

Not very welcoming. The lady behind the bar didn’t even look at us until she’d finished serving someone and then didn’t really acknowledge we’d been standing there a while. 80% of menu crossed out. Very odd, no acknowledgement of this either. Food took nearly an hour to arrive. Children’s meals were pretty grim. Sausage had mashed up meat stuff inside and fish fingers had similar pink coloured mush inside. Really cheap ingredients. Our Katsu curry was clearly out of a packet. All food was served in bowls rather than a plate. Our Katsu curry was on the specials board but there was also Katsu curry on the main menu but crossed out, this was supposed to come with green beans. Ours didn’t so I assume they had an oversupply of chicken and sauce but didn’t have the fresh ingredients so had to make it sound like a special. All in all quite disappointing.

After being shown to our table for lunch we were asked what we would like to drink, being so close to Bury St Edmunds an IPA seemed in order however I was immediately informed that not only did they have no IPA but no ales at all and only Stella. We were then told that there are new owners who had only just taken over as explanation.Nearly half the food menu had a line through it as unavailable but we were assured that there was plenty of the roast of the day, either turkey or beef. After ordering the food it finally arrived nearly an hour later, the beef was over cooked and not much of it, all the vegetables were under cooked and cold with the exception of the cauliflower cheese (best thing on the plate). After only six orders of beef they then wiped this off the “roast of the day” chalk board, not plenty of it after all (explained the lack of it on each plate). When the new owner spoke to us to apologise for the lack of ale he proceeded to blame everyone else (previous owners, the brewery etc..) and also told us he thought they had “made a good start”.Not good at all, needs to improve a lot and quick.

We visited last sunday for the hig roast event, this pub used to be the heart and soul of the village , I have lived in Ixworth since 1978 !! Sadly over recent years it has struggled and had different people at the helm and is now suffering again. The hog roast , was not.. as there was no hog at at all , for £5 we got a bread roll, cold cut up pork joint, even colder stuffing that hadnt seen the oven, roast potatoes that were all gone , coleslaw and a dry kind of salad. We ate in the courtyard and as soon as we had finished eating we left , like others as the dj playing music (laptop job )was playing electronic crap and very , very loudly , we could not have a conversation at all and had to shout, there was nowhere else to sit but the courtyard.Music is a personal choice I know , but that should of been ambient music for people eating, not a rave !!!Young girl running around with blonde hair , acting like she's currently in charge , so I assume she is, please learn to smile and engage with all your customers , when we were there not one time did you do that with anyone..No wonder people like us are not returning to this pub, which is such a shame..

We were a party of four for lunch on this occasion. My husband chose the steak and kidney pudding, he left the outer pastry, it looked very thick and stodgy. My son had the chicken and bacon salad, this had a very wide range of salad items which made it very tasty. My daughter-in-law had the lasagne which she declared to be wonderful. I had the mozzarella gnocchi in tomato sauce with garlic bread, the tomato sauce was very tasty but sadly the gnocchi had no flavour at all and there were far too many gnocchi for me to eat. I would like to suggest that the dish of food is placed on another plate as there was nowhere to put my garlic bread except on the table (I didn't want it soggy). The puddings were very enjoyable and nicely served.. The day of our visit being a Tuesday there weren't many diners and the place seemed cold.

Had dinner in the Pykkerell, and the food was distinctly average, there is nothing that stands out as good or tasty. More like bland and slightly boring. The desserts were not great, the lemon tart seemed okay, the crumble tiny in a little ramekin and the banoffee pie was not really a banoffee. If looked as though the thinnest of layers of dulche de leche was spread across a ready bought pie shell and some tiny dry bits of banana placed within and then someone had used a spray cream to pipe blobs on top. Will not be back for seconds!

When I heard it was under new management I thought we’d give it another go, and I’m glad we did. Was tasty food, served in good time and arrived piping hot. Was a good choice on the new menu and a selection of specials. My only small criticism would be that the waitress could do with a little bit more training and be a little friendlier. Very cosy looking when we arrived. We were greeted by a young woman who was very nice. We were given our room key and upon entering our room, we were very pleasantly surprised on how large the room was. Very spotlessly clean. It's set in what looks like a very old, country village setting. As it's near Christmas, the little shops and cottages had little Christmas trees above their doors and Christmas wreaths on the doors. Was beautiful at night. My husband had to leave me for the day and I asked if it would be ok to stay at the Inn all day. I was told to make myself at home. I went back upstairs and made our bed (I didn't want a fuss) and tided our things away. Opened the curtains and sat to watch a bit of morning tv, which is something I never do. They have a huge flat screen tv in the room, it was really nice. A comfy sofa at the bottom of the bed to watch the tv from. May I add that the bed was so warm and cosy and very comfortable. It was a lovely atmosphere and felt very homely. I then sat to do some work on my laptop. About midday there was a knock on my door, I opened it to find the lady had brought me up a huge pot of coffee with cup and sugar lumps and milk jug. She asked me if I was ok and warm enough and if there was anything I needed. Did I need clean towels or cups etc;.. How lovely was that! We sat in the bar for one drink on two evenings and it was a lovely atmosphere, very friendly people. We rose for breakfast and not only was it well presented but tasted delicious. I recommend the full English. We had toast, coffee and orange juice. Very filling for the entire day. I didn't get their names but I would love to thank them very, very much for a much needed and wonderful stay. Unknown to the staff, I have been unwell due to a sleep disorder and I had a good rest. So I highly recommend this lovely B&B.; I never found out the staffs names But whoever they are....Thank you very much from Mick and Marie.

Booked in to stay the night as a return customer, on arrival was asked to pay for the room immediately - only after payment was told that they had run out of heating oil so would be no heating for 2 hours - also no gas hobs as LPG had run out also so may be limited menu for evening meal. Room was absolutely freezing - offered an electric heater but had to ask for a second as it was so cold. Asked if any hot water and told only by the shower - lock on bedroom door broken so no security. Room very dim as only old style light saving bulbs - could barely read and I was here on business so had to. Previous occupants dirty towels found on back of bathroom door also selection of human hairs in bathroom too. Needless to say no heating oil ever arrived so no heating or hot water during my terrible stay - was told the kitchen only had cold water to work with which must have food hygiene issues. To top it all the electric shower also didn't work when I tried to use it next morning - all it produced was a lukewarm trickle... Asked for my money back and was told manager would call me to discuss - still waiting for a return call 3 days later... Would be difficult to imagine a worse stay...

Tuve un pastel de carne y patatas fritas con ale, que era delicioso, seguido de un brownie de chocolate, que era uno de los mejores que he probado. Saturday night saw us visit the Pykkerell for dinner, based upon the review of some visitors to the cottage we were holidaying in nearby. We parked at the rear, and walked in to the bar, which transpired to be the wrong bar for meals. After waiting for 5 minutes, a rather surly chap (maybe the licensee?) told us to make our way to the other side of the bar, throwing in a comment which may have held a measure of sarcasm? So we did, and met him at the front side of the bar in what was now clearly the "restaurant" area. We ordered drinks and with another fairly odd response to my question as to where we should sit, walked to a table for two. Mistake really, as we chose to sit next to a table of about 6. Although they weren't too noisy, we could pretty much hear every word they were saying, which included a conversation about some gynaecological issues. Can do without that over dinner. Anyway, after 10 minutes or so, the one and only waitress I observed throughout gave us menus. The choice was limited, and the prices high for such an establishment. Some minutes went by and we placed our order. We deliberately skipped starters as we decided that with more customers arriving the delays would build with the solitary waitress. Credit due as the mains arrived reasonably quickly given the situation. The food was tasty (we both had fish) but portion sizes were disappointing for the price. I think they call it "nouvelle cuisine". Still hungry after the mains. Chips would have helped.... We then ordered the sticky toffee pudding. When it arrived, it was lukewarm. Oh dear! We paid our bill and left, having to pay that chap again who I swear uttered some other odd quip which I found disconcerting. We won't be back.

We have been in before and the sandwiches have always been lovely but today the sandwiches were on crap cheap bread and the cheddar cheese was cut so thin that there was hardly cheese you could hardly taste it. No salad at all. shall not be going back shame as it lovely pub ruined.

Lovely roast lamb, drowned in beef gravy. Come on Chef, you can do better than that, it's not difficult to prepare a separate gravy for each meat.

Just nipped in for a food on the way back from town as we used to love this place, we were handed a single menu with 3 starter choices and 4 main choices... we ended up with sandwiches as nothing on the menu seemed appealing... our sandwiches turned up, it was literally salmon in some brown hovis loaf... no rocket or mayo or anything as stated on the menu... there was no chips on the kids sandwich... just looked like the saddest plate of food ever. We asked the waiter to take it back and he said it does look vey sad and boring... it took 5 mins yo bring it back and all that had changed was some wilted dirty (unwashed) salad leave had been put inside. Will never be going back, staff were not the best. Has defo changed and gone downhill compared to before.

Called in for lunch with a limited lunch menu. This is OK as often means the chef is really making an effort. There is so much competition in this area that you can be quite picky about venues.Husband chose from menu (lasagna) and I had a sandwich. My sandwich was in supermarket bread, (thin sliced or medium),a salad that consisted of a batch of leaves, also it seemed from a supermarket bag and some crisps. It was adequate, but nothing more. Husbands had lasagna and salad. It was bland, just warm and no cheese or bechamel sauce in evidence. The salad was, again, just a batch of leaves. This was better value that the sandwich but as there is another pub just a few steps away that serves generous portions at good value I would be surprised if this survives. This will be a shame as it is a lovely place to eat, looking lovely from the outside.A couple eating near us order the salmon, rocket and mayonnaise sandwich, which arrived on dry bread, no mayonnaise or salad. I am surprised a chef would let that out of the kitchen. We will not return

We were three for lunch. Very well looked after. Two of the meals were delicious, the third consisted of a beefburger which was very thin and tough. Can't understand why this was offered when the other 'mains' and 'desserts' were top quality.

19 members from our slimming world group ate here for a Christmas lunch. We were not counting syns or calories!!The staff were attentive and extremely helpful in planning for our visit. On the day of the meal we were given a seperate area of the restaurant. The meal was prompt. Piping hot and beautifully cooked. For a slimming world group there was far to much , but we all cleared our plates. I've not visited for some time before this lunchtime meal, but will be back soon, as they have an extensive menu. Well done for an excellent service. The added bonus is they also have hotel rooms available.

We just didn't eat it !!! 4 Brussels between 5 of us, beef rubber, pork full of fat, veg Cold. That's just the roast, child's options don't even go there. just apparent that we were last on service customers actually asked the staff to serve us first before they received theirs. Thank you!!!! We payed the bill, & left as soon as possible,we didn't complain . why !!!! because I just wanted to get the hell out of there!!!!!! I've just given the edited version. We had dinner on Saturday evening at this charming village pub. The staff were friendly and the service was very good. We had starters of freshly cooked calamari and steamed mussels in white wine and garlic. For main course we enjoyed pasta with prawns in tomato sauce (children) and the stone bass with parmentier potatoes with a tomato and red onion ragu which was delicious. The dessert menu contained all the usual crowd pleasers, the children enjoyed a selection of ice creams and sorbets. I would recommend the beautiful homemade sticky toffee pudding. Fantastic meal.

Needed some where to stop quickly after a day out at a function. We had a hungry & tired 8 year old & we only just made it before they stopped serving. The welcome & service however were great. The food was lovely especially the lamb shank & the chicken nuggets were real not rubbish. The pint of Abbott was very welcome too.

The usual "spoons" standard Food and drinks were all good value Service was great the bar are serving staff were happy to help Sadly there was some form of issue that there was an excessive amount of little black fly's. We relocated to another part of the bar, the following evening the fly infested area was closed off.
