Our son took us here for a treat for his mums birthday I had the rump steak medium rare but it was very hard to eat as very chewy. The restaurant was in a nice location with fields around but it stunk of manure! I would not want to come back again.

Took my family {14} for an 80th birthday dinner, the meal was excellent and ordered off the 'ala carte' menu, the food was excellent and the kitchen chef and team did a great job serving the meal without anyone having to wait, the serving staff where also very friendly and efficient, there was also a great selection of wines and beer. Car parking was easy Would highly recommend this establishment for a family celebration

Went here last week for a birthday meal with family. We had previously been here as a couple a few times in the last few months and loved it but wow you are treated so different as a larger group. So firstly despite booking we were set in another part of the restaurant where the service was quite shocking. We literally had our order taken, meal brought out and that was it! No offer of further drinks, no questions about how the meal was or even would you like the bill…. Literally meal delivered and gone…… the food was lovely but it was clear this place does not cater for birthdays! Oh and to prove the point every time we have been we have had a nice little voucher to collect for future discounts - guess what …. Nothing ! Surprising and dissapointing experience .

I had the fishcakes for a 'main meal' , I did get the smaller portion, however, it was sold as a main meal and was £11. When it arrived it was 1 small fishcake and probably 2 spring onions, it was definitely small. I can't believe they charge £11 for 1 fishcake. We went as a treat as it was a special occasion, so I didn't want to make a fuss, however, if I had just gone for a meal, there is no way I would of paid for the small side plate of 1 fishcake. Avoid , unless you want to go home hungry

Had the best Sunday Roast in a restaurant here. The mixed version of pork and beef was really tasty and very generous portion. Vegetables cooked to perfection with a little crunch! Service was spot on and atmosphere was so relaxing that we ended up taking 4 hours enjoying our meal! Great selection of drinks - and staff really go the extra mile. Ended the evening by retiring to the back bar to enjoy a great selection of whiskey. Thank you for a wonderful wedding anniversary experience.

Had a fantastic meal on a recent visit to the Red Fox. All of the party enjoyed the food and I especially enjoyed the vegan options, although it would be great to have more than one option of vegan starter. Waiters and manager were friendly and helpful. Only constructive point would be that when we had a drink before sitting down to eat, it felt like the bartender who served us was not that familiar with the beers we ordered and wasn't sure where some were and couldn't describe them to us.Looking forward to the next visit, especially for the food! :)

We saw the chef having a little rest Outside the kitchen and thanked him for the delicious dinners! Talented chef! I ordered a vegan curry, it’s hard to make vegan food appealing sometimes. But it was stunning. We had the lamb shoulder and lamp pie too. All incredible and the chips were to die for! Will defo be back

Booked a table a week in advance as this was a special meal for my husband's 74th birthday. I specified where we would like to be seated and explained that it was a special 'do'. We have eaten here twice during lockdown and it was excellent. We always have wine / beer followed by 2 prawn cocktails,2 seabass,2 desserts followed by 2 coffees. So good that I passed word around to family and friends. The day before we got a message so that we could confirm everything and again I explained that it was a special meal and where we would like to be seated. We excitedly walked up the steps and had no idea what we were supposed to do-hung around a bit and no one came up to us. I walked over to a waitress who was by the computer and I said that we had a table booked. She said 'go to the bar -they will see to you'. Went to the bar and joined a bit of a queue (surely there should be someone available to meet and greet customers as they arrive??? Others gave their name and were taken presumably to their booked table. I gave our name and he checked his list-he asked for our name again then said 'just a minute' and he went off somewhere. He came back and said follow me and took us to the left of the bar to a place where we weren't expecting. He cleared a table that was set for 6 people and we sat down.We were already feeling uncomfortable-this room was definitely NOT where we wanted to be-it had no atmosphere whatsoever. We ordered drinks. then waitress came and we ordered our usual 2 P/Cs and 2 seabass-so far OK. then she came back and said 'oh I forgot-we have no seabass'. OMG-I didn't know what to do-I felt like let's get out of here-but at the same time I thought that we would not get in any other decent restaurant (1st night of no restrictions etc) Absolutely nothing else on the menu appealed to us-but in the end my husband went for the fish cakes with salad-I really didn't fancy anything so I asked if I could have the salmon pasta starter dish as a main course. + portion of chunky chips. My husband has never in his life said that a meal was 'awful and tasteless' He really is very easily pleased. his fish cakes with small bit of salad -he said he could do better himself-and he has never cooked anything in his life! Mine was actually 2 pieces of pasta (tortellini) filled with a horrible tasteless filling-supposed to be salmon with a very thin watery tasteless sauce. Things were going from bad to worse. We didn't bother with dessert or coffee-as nothing could make this special night better.I felt so sorry for my husband and I have promised to take him somewhere else this weekend to make up for this disaster of an evening at the Red Fox.This was not cheap-so I really don't know what has happened to the normally very good Red Fox restaurant. Has it changed hands? Has the head chef moved on? Something definitely not right.I left a similar review on the Red Fox website but they have chosen to not bother getting back to me-that says it all as far as I am concerned. I had promised to bring my daughter here for a 'special' meal after she has finished her cancer treatments (radio and chemotherapy)- butI can not risk this happening again .* I normally do take photos of the meals that we have had here-these meals were so poor that I didn't take any photos. My husband even said that we would have had a better meal in Macdonalds!! We have never been there but I'm sure he is right.

As a family we visited the Red Fox tonight to celebrate my mother in law’s 85th birthday. Table booked for 6.45, for a party of five. Things started badly when the waitress asked if we would like to order drinks and I asked for a few minutes, as not all the party had arrived. From then on all eye contact from the server was avoided. We had to ask for drinks after we had been sat there for about 15 minutes. The order was taken as a matter of course, with no interaction between server and customer. Again had to ask for food order to be taken, no interaction. Wrong food brought and the meal that was missing was the birthday girls!! Replacement was brought quickly. After this point the server became much more attentive, apologised for mistake - we can all make them. My main objection was the attitude with which we were served - it cast a real atmosphere over the party, which should have been a celebration. We have eaten at the Red Fox for many years and we’re really disappointed with the service we received on this occasion. Hopefully this is a one off as we are eating there again in two weeks for another celebration!!

The main food course - when it eventually came 1 hr after we arrived - was well presented and tasted very nice. We were with our grandchildren who were getting very fidgety with the long wait and I heard guests on nearby tables saying “why’s the food taking so long” No reason was given for the delay!

Booked afternoon tea for my mum and stepdad for her 80th birthday. No complaints at all about the day. Our family is familiar with the Red Fox and it didn’t disappoint. Great selection of cakes and sandwiches. Generous offerings and, as always, great service. However, I have a small gripe about the messing around with the booking. I clicked onto the website and there was a very informative page on the afternoon tea. It said it was popular and booking was recommended. So I scrolled down and at the bottom of the page there was an option to buy a voucher but not to book a slot. I got on the phone to book. They took the booking, no problem, and then I asked could I pay in advance over the phone as I wouldn’t be there myself on the day. I was told ‘no, you can’t pay now in advance you would have to buy a voucher in person or online’.Ok, I said, if I buy a voucher online can I send them along with a pdf of the voucher or the code? No, she replied, they would have to bring a physical printout of the voucher. But I don’t have a printer, I said. ‘Well you’ll have to come in and buy a voucher,’ she replied.I almost gave up there and then and booked somewhere else but I knew how much they liked the venue. So I went to the venue to buy the voucher. Why they couldn’t accept a saved electronic version of the voucher is a mystery. The whole process was a lot more difficult than it needed to be.

There was plenty of room between tables and you never felt crowded. The staff were very efficient and friendly but not obtrusive. The menu is not the most comprehensive in the world but enough variety to suit most tastes. For the quality of food and service the prices are quite reasonable. The service before the payment process was great . The food was great as usual . But when we wanted to pay I caught the eye of a waiter. I indicated in a polite way that I would like to have some service, he was just standing there doing nothing so was not busy. He just stared at me blankly in a very strange manner eventually he sauntered over . I said sorry to bother you but could we have the bill, he replied " don't worry its no problem I have not done anything for the last 15 mins anyway" very strange thing to say. He was polite enough there after but after inserting my card he announced in a loud voice "so that's £133.60 to pay "" all my guests heard and the table next to us all looked over with one women putting her mouth to her hand in shock . As it was my wife's birthday I did not want to create a fuss so thought I will leave it and go through he proper channels , Trip Adviser etc. I was furious and embarrassed. This waiter needs some re training . Really took the shine of what was a very nice visit. The table for 5 was booked for 8 pm on 19th June under the name Earnshaw, my future son in law booked it for me.

I sent mine back and was not charged but my son's roast beef was just as bad i.e. roast pots, Yorkshire etc meat was fine, my husband had the Steak & Ale pudding which was fine but not the "Cadburys Smash"On the way home we were all suffering severe pains in our stomachs and panicking we would not get home in time! As a family of 12 we expected to be on separate tables, however we were seated extremely far apart and when larger areas were occupied by 3/4 people we didn’t find this acceptable. We didn’t expect both tables to eat at the same time however one of our party’s table had finished 30 minutes before ours even arrived. When it did arrive the meals were mixed up. My son has a peanut allergy which he has a severe reaction to yet the wrong meal was delivered to him, this is a life or death error... !! Our meals were completely wrong and took another 30 mins to be replaced. I appreciate that 50% of the bill was wiped but i don’t feel this compensated for the seriousness of the situation. I found the whole experience from start to finish absolutely terrible. I would not recommend this place especially if you have a severe allergy.

Beautiful surroundings and usually excellent food. We came for Sunday lunch and ordered the beef. The waitress returned to enquire whether everything was ok with our meals which at that time it was. Unfortunately, we hadn't yet tried our beef which was so tough it was impossible to chew. In fact, it was so tough it could easily have gone 12 rounds with Ali. We left all the meet and mentioned the toughness to the waitress when she returned to clear the table. Our waitress told us in no uncertain terms that we should have reported the problem when she first asked us, notwithstanding that we hadn't by then tried the meat. Well, our apologies for not reporting the problem at a time convenient to her. We were told! Very disappointing and most unlike our many excellent previous experiences at the Red Fox.

Excellent food and service. We visited on a Saturday night and had booked in advance. The weather had been pretty awful and, as the marquee is outside and on grass, the staff kindly gave us a courtesy call to ask if we wanted to cancel or rebook which I thought was really lovely of them. We decided to go ahead in our wellies but didn't really need them in the end!It was surprisingly warm with the heaters as well! The food was absolutely incredible. I had the chicken pie which was gorgeous and the chocolate tart for pudding which was rich but perfectly balanced with the sorbet. The drinks list is extensive - I asked for the whiskey list and was presented with a 5 page booklet! Very impressive.Although other reviewers may find it 'disappointing' that staff didn't want to break COVID restrictions for them, I found it comforting that everything was so safe and well-handled. I commend the staff for their hard work at this tricky time.Overall, it was the perfect evening with incredible food. I can't wait to visit again soon!

We had asked for these to be close to each other, we understood they may not be next to each other but hoped we’d be at least in talking distance. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case, even though there were a few tables near us with no one sat on. The staff refused to move part of our party to the nearby table. The table next to us remained empty the whole time we were there and meant our mum and dad were over the other side of the tent. My parents Sunday dinners were warm but not hot and they left disappointed in their food. We also waited nearly 30 mins to pay our bill. We have been going to the Red Fox for many years mainly at Christmas time usually boxing day as was the case this time. We have always been very happy with our meals on these occasions but sadly this boxing day was different. We each had (there were four of us) a festive meal with a starter and desert. The starter was very nice in each case but when the main meals arrived mine was not very hot my son and husbands had rock hard sprouts and my husband had two bad roast potatoes. After a while the waitress came to ask if our meals were opon which my son said the sprouts were very hard and my husband showed her the bad potatoes. She apologised and told us she would pass our comments on to the chef. A little later she said she had mentioned it to the chef and said you cannot always tell if potatoes are bad until you cut into them and most people prefer their vegetables al dente these days. She offered to take off the price of a round of drinks by way of compensation. I feel a trained chef should realise when potatoes are bad and there is a difference in al dente and absolutely so hard we couldnt penetrate them with a knife. Maybe they didnt have their best chef in at the time but i feel The Red Fox has gone down in my estimation.

We visited as a family tonight and I’ve been really looking forward to it since we booked about three weeks ago, I ordered the shoulder of lamb which to be honest was rather bland and disappointing, The food was literally thrown on the table without asking if we wanted any condiments, there seem to be a lack of service at our table and we kept on having to just called over different members of staff as they were passing. To be honest we felt quite abandoned at our table which was pretty central

We visited the red fox for a Sunday roast and we were absolutely bowled over with everything about the place. From just how organised the staff are with health and safety/covid measures (all staff wearing visors or masks). Everything was pristine clean, sanitizer dispensers everywhere. This is the most organised pub we have been to 100%, they just get it right in every way, which is important to us as my wife has been shielding during the pandemic. We ordered our drinks from the extensive drinks menu. My wife ordered a speciality Gin.We both ordered roast pork and it promptly arrived served with a huge Yorkshire pudding, crackling, seasonal veg and home cooked roasties. It was delicious. Our deserts - Belgian waffle, caramelised banana, honeycomb ice cream with butterscotch sauce... and Creme Brulè with shortbread biscuits were lovely too. Afterwards we had a drink in the beautiful beer garden. We will surely be back and will definitely recommend to all our friends and family. Thanks to the staff at Red Fox for putting our anxieties at rest and for making our dining experience a really good one.

I finally ventured out with my father and daughter post lockdown for a drink. Admittedly we were nervous not having been out in a public environment. The first pub we tried wrote my name on a scrap of paper and the tables were filthy, so we left and went to the Red Fox. What a contrast! Exceptionally well organised from the moment you arrive. They have considered everything. You are greeted by a member of staff who books you in electronically and then takes you to your table. There are automatic hand sanitizer units dotted around and the staff wear shields. Plenty more to say but essentially they are a wonderful example of how pubs and restaurants should be managing this situation. The staff were incredibly friendly, buoyant and could not do enough for us. All of the 'clinical' precautionary measures did not detract from what is a beautiful location and relaxing, friendly ambience. We did not eat there but the food looked incredible too. If you feel anxious or not the Red Fox is definitely worth a visit. Enjoy!

We live nearby to the Red Fox and have dined here before. Therefore with lockdown easing we called up and asked if we could reserve a table for outside for later in the week when we had seen the weather was meant to be nice. We was told that you can’t reserve the tables outside and it’s a first come basis. We was ok with that as we just thought we would have an early lunch. We got to the Red Fox at just after midday and saw lots of tables outside free. We followed the signs and queued, waiting to be met. We was first in the queue at the time, although over time quite a few had joined behind us. After 10 minutes we were greeted and we asked if we could have a table of 2 outside to which we were told they are all reserved and therefore they was no tables available. We left to have to try and find somewhere else. Disappointed at the mixed messages about booking.

We have done both, and they don’t disappoint! The location is fantastic, all the staff of very friendly, in fact, we have been going for years and sit at the same table and have the same waitress… Diane. They are also Covid 19 compliant…they are meticulous. If ever we have had problems, all you have to do is tell the staff and it’s sorted…By the way – I’m wheelchair bound, so this place is more than suitable for us disabled…and I am gluten free, dairy free and cereal free. They have a special menu that will cater for all special dietary requirements…their gluten free chips are the best in the world: infect, they are that nice that my friends prefer them and order these instead…All in all, The Red Fox is a very wonderful place to go…

Having been to The Red Fox numerous times my first restaurant meal with a friend after lockdown was here. The whole staff have worked very hard to ensure the premises are as covid secure as it can be. We waited outside and were quickly greeted be our server who was wearing a visor. We sanitised our hands and were swiftly shown to our table. The ordering process was explained and we were asked to stay at our table and not visit the bar.Drinks were served to the table. The restaurant is contactless with no cash accepted. Some tables have been removed to comply with social distancing. We were seated at a table for 6 despite there just being 2 of us.The table was empty, just some cutlery in a jug. I found this a bit off putting. Disposable menus were provided. We were asked to pick up our drinks from the servers tray. Due to the reduction of tables and them not being set I am afraid I did find the environment a little "clinical" The menu was small. Very few light bites for lunch. I had the crispy beef salad.Tasty but slightly cold. My friend had the small fish and chips with looked "OK" The dessert was lovely creme brulee and banana waffle. I felt the meal with one glass of wine and coffee a bit overpriced at £55 for the couple. Well done to The Red Fox You have provided a safe clean environment with very hard working staff. I did not find the experience very pleasant due to the restrictions and I will leave eating in any restaurant until times are better. The Red Fox is doing the best it can under difficult circumstances but "it is what it is"

Came here for a family meal, I can't fault the meal, the food is excellent but since the social distance has been put in place they seem to be missing some staff. This meant trying to get a hold of someone was problematic, there seemed to be only one person taking orders and it took a long time before he came back near our table. Drinks were slow to come and one was wrong but it took ten minutes to get the waiter back to correct it. I like it here but they need to fix the problems with service now the new measures are in place.

Lovely staff and lovely decor. I ordered the small fish and chips as the dessert menu looked good. It was really nice but it was smaller than my daughter's meal from the children's menu. Throughout the time we spent perusing the menu, waiting for our food, the starter and main course we had to listen to a dog yapping virtually non stop and when that stopped another dog started barking. Neither owner was challenged and it made for an uncomfortable visit - hence the low rating.

We dine at the Red Fox on a regular basis as the food is very good. The lamb shoulder is especially good, however they now serve it with crushed new potatoes rather than dauphinoise which is disappointing. Our post lock down experience meant that the tables were well spaced apart but that didn't stop the annoyances from the next table- mobile phones constantly pinging. Why they couldn't put them on silent beggars belief. Maybe the Red Fox should request this when dining in the restaurant? We felt that the drinks service needs to be improved now that they have introduced table service only, we were not asked if we wanted more drinks and had to look around for staff. Furthermore we were not provided with a drinks menu which would have been useful for selecting real ale and gin.On the whole, it wasn't the best dining experience, so will leave it a while before returning in the hope that things will improve.

As my previous reviews will attest, I am a big fan of Brunning and Price in general and The Red Fox in particular. My first visit to a B&P pub was The Old Harkers Arms in Chester in 1990 and I've visited many of their other pubs in the years since then. They are all wonderful places to eat and drink. Since my last visit I have adopted a vegan diet. I was previously a meat eater so never paid any attention to vegi/vegan options on menus. I had the vegan Haggis with neeps and tatties and a delicious red wine infused pear for dessert and both were wonderful. What would I have done if I hadn't liked the look of these options as they were, and still today are, the only vegan options on the menu.As a very recent convert to veganism this was my first meal out. To find no choice on the menu came as a surprise to me. With the growing popularity of a vegan diet I would have expected my favourite pub company to offer more choice than just one main and one dessert. The food was excellent as always and the service and ambience everything I have come to expect from B&P.More for vegans please.

I dont believe that the roast potatoes were freshly cooked as they were beyond dry, I think they were most likely frozen roast potatoes such as Iceland aunt Bessie etc. We waited for 2 hours to be served our slodge. The pigeon starter was like leather. My wife had chips with her meal that burnt and grease laden. We paid £300+ for starters, mains and drinks and it was robbery, the staff don't wear masks like dick turpin, but in fairness the staff are really good and polite. We have been regular customers at the Red Fox since it opened. We have visited with a variety of friends and relations but over the last 12 months standards are slipping. Prices have been increased considerably and portions have got smaller. When we visited with 6 relations last week we all commented that the quality/quantity of the food was not as it used to be. Some had the tea/coffee and smaller dessert which we were amazed to see had increased to £6.95 which is completely over the top. Not sure how you can possibly justify such a significant price increase. My husband had the small sticky toffee pudding which was an extremely small wedge with most of the ice cream having melted by the time it arrived at the table. I know these are small portions but £6.95 for this was a total rip off. Some of us had the small portion of mains and the amount of chips served had considerably reduced. If you are putting up your prices like this you should not reduce the size of the portions.Yet again we waited over 40 minutes for our main meal to arrive. Yes the restaurant was busy but this is happening time and time again. You need to get more help in the kitchen area. Not too sure whether you are concentrating more on the Little Fox hence there is not the staff to serve in the main restaurant. As I said we have been regular customers over many years but at the moment think it is 'goodbye Red Fox' and we will be looking at alternative eateries.

I visited the restaurant while I was staying in the area. I had one of tge best steak meals I've had on this occasion. It was just perfect. Abd the value from the Evening set meal price is very good. Service was excellent. It was very disappointing to learn this outlet is one of many Whitbread have decided to close. Over many years it has been a very popular venue for a good value meal and will be much missed. If only Whitbread had invested more in and it's other restaurants instead of closing so many. Very short sighted
