A very nice pub with hotel rooms. Great welcome on arrival and our room was beautifully presented with lots of attention to detail. We had our evening meal in the pub and the food was excellent. Breakfast was also first class. Highly recommended 👌 👍 👏

SHOCKING CUSTOMER SERVICE! After queueing for over 20 minutes and seeing how everyone was served in front of me, when it was finally my turn, the barmaid behind the bar left and said she had to go to the kitchen to serve some food to the diners. After a while, when she got back, she snapped at me and shouted that it was very unreasonable to ask for two caffe lattes given the fact that the pub was busier than usual. I had been understanding and waited patiently at the bar, but I found her behaviour extremely aggressive as she was redirecting her anger about her being understaffed on me. Only one person was on the queue after me, if anything, she could have said something in line with ‘ thank you for waiting, how can I help you?’ as I was aware of the long queue before me and her being on her own. So much aggression thrown at a customer who wanted a coffee for them and their friend.

First time visiting the red cow. Great pub in a beautiful village. Staff were polite and friendly. Food was fantastic. We had the burgers and chips which I would rate a firm 9.2/10. It was juicy, flavourful and just very nice. Chips perfectly cooked. My daughter had nuggets, Chips and peas, all looked homemade and she loved it. Highly recommended and will be returning.

What a wonderful gem of a place to stay! We planned a visit to IWM Duxford and booked an overnight stay at the Red Cow. The rooms are to the highest standard of any of the accommodations I have stayed in (worldwide - I've visited 40+ countries). They exude old-world charm with modern amenities. The inn itself is a beautiful thatched building with a lovely interior that is quintessential English with a wonderful atmosphere that feels comfortable and quaint. The meals were well prepared and presented and reasonably priced. The only reason for the 4 star service rating was due to newly hired staff serving our evening meal. They were being trained and were unsure of what they were doing. No doubt they will eventually achieve the standard that this establishment deserves.

Travelled to the UK from Australia in June / July 2023 As part of our (wife and I) holiday, I wanted to stay in Chrishall as this is where my ancestors lived before they came out to South Australia way back in 1861, so we booked a room for 2 nights at the Red Cow. We drove up to Chrishall from London on a Sunday and arrived at the Red Cow about 3:00 PM to find the pub packed due to the Sunday roast lunch!! We booked in, dropped our suitcases off in our room and went back to the Red Cow and politely asked if we could order the roast ourselves, understanding that it was now 3:30 PM and the kitchen was probably closed. But this was not a problem as the Staff were only too happy for us to have our roast (which were excellent!) We then enjoyed a couple of drinks out in the beer garden on what was a great afternoon weather wise. They don't do dinner on Mondays but had a food van in the car park which served Mexican food which was of good quality. Again we had a few drinks in the beer garden with lots of other people around providing a good atmosphere. We stayed in the Drage room which was spotlessly clean and spacious. Unfortunately, we could only stay for 2 nights due to our timetable but I can say that this is a gem of a little pub & credit must go to the owners and friendly Staff for a welcoming 'vibe'. Would not hesitate to recommend staying here. If you do, make sure you visit Audley House in the small town of Saffron Walden (approx. 15 minutes from Chrishall) which is excellent.

Nice little pub but shame about food just heads up if it says fish n chips that's all there cooking for you no alternative for people that don't eat fish (but I swear I see the proper menu given out whilst there to other people after I arrived) reply to response I get what you say but we're from out of town so some empathy wouldn't go a miss. I had to sit outside after a hard day's work whilst the rest of my team ate I'm still hungry and can't eat till I go home tomorrow thanks for that

Excellent food and friendly service. We were camping nearby and ended up walking to this pub. The only reason why the review isn't 5 stars is because of the waiting times of the food while taking into account the near empty restaurant area at the time we were there. It could be because the kitchen has just opened, but regardless, afterwards, there was an additional waiting time for desserts that was longer than expected...

The accommodation is modern, tidy, clean and well presented, I cannot fault it. (Lots of safe easy parking next to pub too is convenient) The food is really tasty - wide selection of meals, the specials menu is delicious, puddings very seductive. Great selection of beers in cosy bar with authentic woodwork, interesting pictures of red cows, and proper real enticing fire, so friendly with mix of sociable locals and other guests to talk to if you want. Dog friendly in main bar, including treats, and lots of space, and super service, no waiting, friendly / professional staff looking after you always. Lots to do locally, including Norman flint made Churches, bridleways, walks, air museum at Duxford, etc. Thank you Red Cow, we will be returning to stay soon- for the yummy pheasant, pork, turkey, and sweet rice pudding, sticky toffee pud....full english cooked breakfasts, ace company, relaxing times X Nick X

We can thoroughly recommend The Red Cow as both a pub for a meal or for a celebration. We, together with 13 friends and family plus a toddler, had the most marvellous celebration for our Ruby Wedding Anniversary at The Red Cow on Sunday, 28th August. Prior to the day Amelie was extremely helpful with regard to menus, wines, table decorations, etc. On the Sunday she and the staff worked tirelessly to ensure that everything went smoothly, glasses were filled, courses served without anyone having to ask or even noticing. Toby and his sous chef produced an absolutely delicious meal of 3 courses plus teas and coffees. We couldn’t have asked for a better day. This is the second celebration we have held at The Red Cow (we were guests at a third) in the last few years and we wouldn’t hesitate to hold another one there. Thank you all for making it so special for us, Lesley and Keith

The Red Cow came to our rescue when we found ourselves stranded near Stansted airport last week following a cancelled flight. Amelie was an absolute delight and helped to book us a very last minute room late into the night. She also rang round local taxi firms to find us a taxi to take us back to the airport early the following morning. She could not have been more helpful and the room and pub were fantastic. Highly recommend and hope to return again soon!

My husband and I stayed here overnight with my Dad. My Dad is now 75 and we'd visited the Imperial War Museum. My Dad has had some quite serious health issues over the past year and his safety is my utmost priority. I would have loved to give The Red Cow a 5 star rating but I have a few reasons why I don't feel I can. My reasons are below: - The rooms are beautiful and well equipped. However, Dad said he was unable to use the shower because the bath was so slippery he couldn't risk standing up so had to use the bath. There was no bath mat that he could find. We later found the bath mats in the drawer under the sink. It would have been more helpful to have the bath mat already in the bath or hanging over the bath so we knew there was one. We had tried to help him but we'd not found out until later. Also my Dad doesn't really understand modern technology and had initially asked us for help to work out how to use the shower as he couldn't find the controls. - It wasn't obvious how to use the shower and the controls could not be operated from within the shower which was very odd. We eventually found the shower controls on the wall by the bathroom door. This meant that we had to turn the shower on before getting in the shower and could not turn it off until we had got out. This was a particularly awkward situation because it means you can't dry yourself before getting out and therefore it's risky stepping out and making the floor wet and slippery. I tried to dry myself before getting out but the towel got wet with the shower still running! Not an ideal situation to be in. - It's great that there is tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms. I would recommend asking for sweetener if you need that as there wasn't any in the room. - I ordered a toasted muffin with smoked salmon and scrambled egg. This was delicious absolutely no problem there. My only issue was that I was only given half of the muffin and I asked where the top half was and was told this is how it comes. This is quite misleading on the menu and you don't receive what you expect. Other than these points, our stay was lovely, the staff were very friendly, made us very welcome and the rooms were delightful. Very clean, tidy and modern. In future I think the staff should explain the points about the location of the bath mat and how the showers work on arrival of guests to avoid future confusion. Overall though, this is a lovely place to stay and my points just minor that I think are worth noting.

A small cosy pub out the countryside, makes for a lovely experience and enjoyable meal. I chose their beef burger that was very juicy with amazing chips. I enjoyed the meal so much and even the desserts were deliciously made bringing love to the meals prepared. The toblerone brownie dessert was warm and chocolatey accompanied with locally sourced ice cream. The brownie was paired with a sweet and delicious salted caramel ice cream helping to cool off the warm brownie slice and beautifully garnished with a strawberry and raspberry. Overall I recommend visiting for lunch and would definitely go back to enjoy some of their fish meals.

The setting is excellent - beautiful building, open fire, exposed timbers, well landscaped entrance way. Unfortunately, the service was slow and seemed inexperienced. Completely appreciate it can be a high turnover industry for waiting staff but they were below par. Starter of pate, onion relish and toasted brioche was good yet uninspiring. Mains of burger, chips and onion rings was bland and at £15 didn't feel worth it. Dessert of toblerone cheesecake was good and well balanced with a small and powerful high cocoa chocolate sauce providing a necessary bitterness. Overall, the wait for the food and waiting staff didn't live up to the fantastic setting. A missed opportunity.
