We stopped by this pub for dinner on our way to London, drawn by its quiet village location, away from the hustle and bustle of the main road—a nice spot for a peaceful meal. While the food was delicious when it finally arrived, we were disappointed by the long wait. It took about an hour for our main dishes. The staff were friendly and welcoming, but they seemed slightly disorganized, leading to some confusion. For instance, we had a wrong starter or whilst waiting quite a while for our mains, one staff member (who seemed unaware of the situation) came over and asked if we were ready for dessert, which was a bit amusing. Overall, I wish I could have given a higher rating, but the long wait and confusion left a mark on the experience. However, I’d still recommend giving this pub a try—it's worth a second chance, and I hope the service improves next time.

Now under new ownership (2024) of a small chain with what seems like a common menu across the group. We wish them well, though it's a bit more corporate and not quite as friendly as in the past. Expect to be asked to pay for food upon ordering rather than running a tab (locals excepted, it seems). Perhaps that's a reasonable approach if they've experienced runners. Food prices have crept up a bit. Beer was variable on our visit: the Wherry was off, the Red Cow Ale wasn't great, but the IPA was lovely. There's fish and chips for around £17 and tasty, but the seafood bouillabaisse isn't generous at £22 and needs a side to make for a full meal. But the pub is still a pleasant spot for a meal and drinks, especially combined with a local dog walk (biscuits kindly provided) with many local paths to explore.

We came with friends and booked two rooms for dinner, bed and breakfast as a treat. The venue is about half way for us both - we live in Kent and our friends in Suffolk. The rooms are stunning and spotlessly clean. A slight issue with our shower was reported but to be fair this didn’t spoil our stay. We were warmly welcomed by friendly staff and the new owner/chef provided a stunning evening meal for us. We all enjoyed our food but my lamb rump curry was a particular joy! Breakfast this morning was equally good and came with a friendly smile from the new owner/chef who is clearly hands on. The pub is in a delightful and peaceful spot. Being close to Duxford is an added bonus as the museum is a great day out. The pub has apparently recently come under new ownership and we wish the new landlord every success as he’s clearly working hard and the establishment is a credit to him.

Six of us came here on a Saturday evening for a family dinner. The pub has a lovely cosy feel to it. My partner and I both ordered the seafood bouillabaisse with herb crostini and dill butter, which was nicely presented and very flavourful. The staff were friendly, though we did feel they could have been a little more attentive (one of the dishes our group ordered came with an ingredient the person had specifically requested be left out, and the servers also didn’t check if we wanted any sauces after bringing our mains). For dessert we had a forest fruit and biscoff crumble with cinnamon custard and a sticky toffee pudding with whisky butterscotch sauce. These were a bit underwhelming - the custard was lukewarm, and the pudding could have done some vanilla ice cream to balance out the richness of the sauce. In summary, the food and service weren’t perfect but we liked the decor and atmosphere and still enjoyed our meal so would give it another shot in future.

SHOCKING CUSTOMER SERVICE! After queueing for over 20 minutes and seeing how everyone was served in front of me, when it was finally my turn, the barmaid behind the bar left and said she had to go to the kitchen to serve some food to the diners. After a while, when she got back, she snapped at me and shouted that it was very unreasonable to ask for two caffe lattes given the fact that the pub was busier than usual. I had been understanding and waited patiently at the bar, but I found her behaviour extremely aggressive as she was redirecting her anger about her being understaffed on me. Only one person was on the queue after me, if anything, she could have said something in line with ‘ thank you for waiting, how can I help you?’ as I was aware of the long queue before me and her being on her own. So much aggression thrown at a customer who wanted a coffee for them and their friend.

What a wonderful gem of a place to stay! We planned a visit to IWM Duxford and booked an overnight stay at the Red Cow. The rooms are to the highest standard of any of the accommodations I have stayed in (worldwide - I've visited 40+ countries). They exude old-world charm with modern amenities. The inn itself is a beautiful thatched building with a lovely interior that is quintessential English with a wonderful atmosphere that feels comfortable and quaint. The meals were well prepared and presented and reasonably priced. The only reason for the 4 star service rating was due to newly hired staff serving our evening meal. They were being trained and were unsure of what they were doing. No doubt they will eventually achieve the standard that this establishment deserves.

Travelled to the UK from Australia in June / July 2023 As part of our (wife and I) holiday, I wanted to stay in Chrishall as this is where my ancestors lived before they came out to South Australia way back in 1861, so we booked a room for 2 nights at the Red Cow. We drove up to Chrishall from London on a Sunday and arrived at the Red Cow about 3:00 PM to find the pub packed due to the Sunday roast lunch!! We booked in, dropped our suitcases off in our room and went back to the Red Cow and politely asked if we could order the roast ourselves, understanding that it was now 3:30 PM and the kitchen was probably closed. But this was not a problem as the Staff were only too happy for us to have our roast (which were excellent!) We then enjoyed a couple of drinks out in the beer garden on what was a great afternoon weather wise. They don't do dinner on Mondays but had a food van in the car park which served Mexican food which was of good quality. Again we had a few drinks in the beer garden with lots of other people around providing a good atmosphere. We stayed in the Drage room which was spotlessly clean and spacious. Unfortunately, we could only stay for 2 nights due to our timetable but I can say that this is a gem of a little pub & credit must go to the owners and friendly Staff for a welcoming 'vibe'. Would not hesitate to recommend staying here. If you do, make sure you visit Audley House in the small town of Saffron Walden (approx. 15 minutes from Chrishall) which is excellent.

Very warm and welcoming with a perfect village pub vibe. Lovely greeting from both the staff and the locals. Furnished with soft oak furniture, oak beams and an open fire 🔥 My Sunday roast was perfectly presented, piping hot and absolutely delicious. Followed by the very best sticky toffee pudding I’ve ever had. A lovely touch is the wooden dresser in the far corner full of an array of sweeties, gifts and greeting cards. Even better was the dog menu and tin of dog treats on the bar for any paw pals visiting . Little Gem of a pub nestled in the heart of Royston in the village of Chrishall. Cant wait to return. If I had to say anything slightly negative it would be that the bathroom although spotlessly clean was very basic and needed a women’s touch.

Proffessional and friendly, if not effusively so, reception followed by ditto service. Two people on duty, the manageress and a very pleasant waitress, the dining room was reasonably busy and they coped very well - no time for chit-chat I guess. A good selection of real ale with no sign of the dreaded Greene King and only, to me anyway, a hint of the uber-ubiquous Adnams. There was an adequate if unadventurous menu with a couple of 'specials' on a board. The food arrived piping hot and their version of mushy peas, which I am not usually a fan of, was delicious, even more-ish. But my 'large' piece of fish was an illusion on the plate. I am intrigued at how it is possible to coat a very skinny fillet of fish with so thick a batter, much of which I left on my plate after having scraped the disappointingly small ammount of perfectly cooked white fish from inside. The coffee was superb, the surroundings very pleasant and the value, by todays' standards, verging on reasonable I thought.

Service was good but I think it was the chefs night off as it wasn't a good experience. Fish and chips ordered, fish was overcooked and burnt. Chips overcooked but somehow managed to be soggy too probably cooked and reheated. Another order was the chicken schnitzel which had a distinct flavour of fish. Guessing it was cooked in the same pan as the breaded fish option. Overpriced for what we received wouldn't recommend the trip out, find a nicer pub! Olives were nice

Excellent food and friendly service. We were camping nearby and ended up walking to this pub. The only reason why the review isn't 5 stars is because of the waiting times of the food while taking into account the near empty restaurant area at the time we were there. The lunch was good but some more vegetables would have been nice - also there was no stuffing to accompany the turkey. We can thoroughly recommend The Red Cow as both a pub for a meal or for a celebration. We, together with 13 friends and family plus a toddler, had the most marvellous celebration for our Ruby Wedding Anniversary at The Red Cow on Sunday, 28th August. Prior to the day Amelie was extremely helpful with regard to menus, wines, table decorations, etc. On the Sunday she and the staff worked tirelessly to ensure that everything went smoothly, glasses were filled, courses served without anyone having to ask or even noticing. Toby and his sous chef produced an absolutely delicious meal of 3 courses plus teas and coffees. We couldn’t have asked for a better day. This is the second celebration we have held at The Red Cow (we were guests at a third) in the last few years and we wouldn’t hesitate to hold another one there. Thank you all for making it so special for us, Lesley and Keith

My husband and I had booked in for a one night stay with dinner. From the moment we arrived until we left we were made to feel welcome. Nothing was too much trouble. The accommodation is first class - beautifully decorated and supremely comfortable. Extra touches make this place a bit special - home-made cookies in a jar to go with drinks in your room, real milk and free water in a fridge for all guests to help themselves to, free sun cream . . . all in addition to top of the range toiletries and accessories in the bathroom. And the food . . . beautifully presented (I was tempted to take its photo!) and totally delicious. Will definitely be returning.

I really didn’t want to give a one star at all appalling service today how we was treated come to this place asked if we could eat are you booked no I said well your have to sit in garden and I will bring menus for her to come out to me and say the manager said no you can’t eat here extremely rude I would never like anyone to feel so small as they did with me people looking like we wasn’t at the standards they require should be utterly ashamed I will be writing reviews about for some time now with the way you delay with us

I have just been paint balling with the family and thought we would come to this pub for lunch. We were told as we hadn't made a reservation that we would have to sit outside and have table service (not an issue) my partner then went inside to get food menus but was told by the manager that we were not allowed to order food and only be able to have drinks!! I believe they have judged us on our clothing and feel this is totally unacceptable! I do not recommend going here unless you are happy to be judged on your appearance! I would give 0 star rating if I could!! Not happy

What fantastic a fantastic country pub, the rooms that we had for our stay were above 5 star rating. Also we had the best fish and chips ever, however, that said the breakfast and the dinner menue was also exceptional. Lastly, the staff were friendly and attentive plus it was great to meet up with Amelie again. "Just a fabulous stay"

I popped in here for a drink during my stay at another local hotel that had zero atmosphere! It was busy with a pleasant hum of happy people chilling out. Red wine was tasty with plent of seating. Car park was quite large so wouldn't have though to many issues parking. Convenient for the airport.

This place has no idea how to treat a customer, service was absolutely shocking, when I complained I was meet with nothing but aggressiveness and would not let my dog eat here

I have to let it be known that this little gem of a pub is not only one of the prettiest interiors of any (of many!) pubs that we go to - it's beautifully decorated, it is also one of the cleanest, with staff being super quick to clean tables and seating areas as people come and go, which is no mean feat given that they are very welcoming of canine companions and that they are pub surrounded by many beautiful walkways. I've never seen it look for one moment anything short of spotless. I've been taking my weim pup to this pub since last Summer and they've seen her go through the stages of too cute to 'complete and utter 'two and a half handful' where I've had to put all my efforts in to managing her (she is 100% typical of her breed!), they might they have been so patient, calm and lovely to her and us. Thank you for being a lovely place to go, team F&H
