This place is amazing, food was super

Meal was good. Two of us had bangers & mash. Two had the ‘bowl’ one had chicken added but she said it was quite bland. The other vegetarian option was good. However we were taken to a room up a couple of steps, with an extremely noisy couple of families with kids that ran around all over the place and the adults were quite noisy too after a while. Something that doesn’t normally bother me. When they left the family behind us were also really noisy. Don’t think it helped that the room echoed everything and the background music was also very loud. Maybe it’s really noisy on a weekend (we went Saturday lunchtime) and possibly better on a weekday. But for me it wasn’t very comfortable at all! Having said that the staff were friendly and helpful. I’d maybe try it again in the week.

Very good food. Great service and nice country pub.

Never got any beer. Three pumps with no beer. This has happened on three occasions. Won’t stop here again. Little wonder pubs are closing

Came here for a surprise birthday meal - David and his staff were very attentive, polite and nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent, there were certainly no complaints from the 11 diners !! Thank you again and see you soon.

From ordering the food,it took 45 minuets for it to be served. We only had one course because of the time taken. Poor management very slow kitchen,shame it could be a good place to go.I"ve been once won"t return. Nick

Visited on a Sunday for lunch. Very nice pub, which has been tastefully decorated in a way that keeps its traditional features whilst being modern. Very friendly staff, chatty, smiling, helpful and a real credit to the pub. The food, was overall mediocre, ordered roast beef, and whilst all very edible and served at a good temperature, it was all sadly underwhelming. Beef was overcooked, potatoes stodgy, and the seasonal very was anything but seasonal. Dessert of the fruit crumble start was overly sweet, and disappointing. Would I go back…. For a drink and the atmosphere, absolutely, for food, doubtful

Nice traditional village pub friendly staff food was not bad at all I'd say probably a touch expensive over some places but overall 7/10 staff were cheerful and happy and good communication this goes a long way in respect of making your experience a better one

A group of 9 ate Sunday Lunch in this lovely pub. We had to wait a while for the food to be served, but were told we would have a wait on arrival and the food was served in the given time frame. Lovely roast meal and wonderful friendly staff.

I had the bangers and mash tasted amazing and you could tell it was all homemade and fresh, it only took around 25 minutes for two big bangers and mash dishes to come out and the staff are very lovely and check up on your table every so often. Great pub with real food Keep it up

Every time we visit there is something new to see, piano, new fencing, etc all very nice. Always have a nice welcome. Sell Boombar, a pint and 175ml of dry white wine £12.55. Building a nice friendly business in lovely environment. Very friendly welcome, nice beer Doombar, large range of wines and food in a very smart pub. The new owners are continuing to improve and decorate.

The kitchen is a little slow, but doesn't detract from the quality of food. Nice easy listening music. Warm. Friendly staff. Nice deserts.

What a lovely pub. Lovely staff. Not at all pretentious. Dog friendly. Great food. Well kept beer reasonably priced wines. A good lunch time menu. Plenty of customers on a Wednesday lunchtime are testament to the quality to the quality of the food. We sat outside in the spring sun and had a thoroughly enjoyable few hours. Will definitely be back.

An absolute gem! I really cannot recommend this place highly enough. The decor and atmosphere are stunning. The food is home cooked, locally sourced, and very reasonably priced. But most of all, the staff are fantastic. Attentive, and really care about your overall experience. A big shout out to Clare, and thank you.

Food once arrived was ok, but took a very long time - starters half an hour. Had special dietary requirements that they took note when ordering but when food arrived they seem to have forgotten about it. Unpleasant male staff - really passive aggressive and no apology at all when miscalculating our bill. Won’t return.

Considering the area and clientele, the Sunday roast is consistently underwhelming. I came here a decade ago and in the last couple of weeks. Horrible ‘roast potatoes’ full of oil, nasty half raw ‘cauliflower cheese’ and tough old beef. That said, it was mostly edible but they need to try harder. Pub decor was also tired and slightly aseptic. Sorry guys!

Enjoyed a superb, set-menu Valentines dinner at the Dukes Head - staff very friendly but the food was SUPERB! Grilled Garlic Prawns as a starter followed by short crust Venison pie which was one of the best meat pies I've ever eaten - not a spec of gristle to be found; just high quality meat. My wife had braised Lamb shank which was so tender it was falling off the bone. Dessert was a 'sharing' plate with Brownies, Chocolate Orange Ice Cream and Eton Mess. Brownies were light, moist and not too stodgy - perfect in fact! All in all, top quality food and great value. Well done do all the staff (especially the chef!).

I can not speak more highly of this pub. It’s beautiful. Always a warm welcome. Whether you’re looking for a family meal… dog friendly or a romantic setting. It caters for all! This evening myself and my partner went for a meal and I can safely say it was the best meal I have ever had (and I’ve eaten in a few top restaurants around the world)… It’s well worth a visit and you won’t be disappointed. Amazing staff and amazing food. It’s the whole package! Thanks the dukes!

Pretty dire, food took over an hour to arrive (egg was possibly cooked for an hour) and was pretty underwhelming. Not worth it, don’t get what the reviews are about.

Pretty mediocre food for lunch with a wait of over an hour from ordering to getting food. Waitress/ bar maid was lovely and working very hard.

We were recommended by a friend to visit The Dukes Head as it was close to the Pumkin farm. On arrival with our 18 month old baby, we looked for a table. We were approached by the manager. He outlined they were fully booked. No issues. But the pub clearly had free tables. So i asked the manager again, are these tables free. I was shocked by his rude response and nature. He really needs customer service training. 1st rule, be polite. Glad i didn't spend a penny at this pub.

Visited this pub this evening, the staff were very friendly, the food was very good. Unfortunately our experience was ruined by a very rude manager/owner who was unable to add up. Apparently 3x250 = 1000. As we left, attempted to say goodbye and was met with stone silence. Disappointed to say the least.

We found this pub after landing at Stansted and wanting to extend our holiday just a little longer. And we weren't disappointed. What a beautifully done out pub, with a menu that is inventive and flexible - in that they offer vege alternatives to most dishes. The food was delicious to boot! The staff were ace and it's definitely somewhere we'd like to spend more time - if only we lived closer.

Thank you, we had a lovely Sunday afternoon. We were a party of 6 and all the roast dinners were served hot and tasted as good as they looked! The deserts were very yummy too. The produce used is top quality. I would highly recommend this friendly pub.

What a great place to while away the hours, the food was fantastic, the staff were great and we will definitely be back.

Lively and (on a Friday evening) very busy. The food was fine....split chicken for me......when eventually it came after an hour and a half waiting. I suspect there was a problem in the kitchen as they did send out bread to pass the time. Decent beers, friendly if stressed staff. One suggestion: the noise levels in the restaurant area were excessive: a few softer surfaces would help absorb some of it. And maybe limit the tables booked if things are getting stretched.

Had sunday lunch which was ok but nothing special the beef was overcooked but still edible so did not complain as the meal was, well ..ok Other than yet another pub who thinks its ok to charge £5 for cauliflower cheese which i think is an insult I still think you wont find a better sunday lunch than the John barleycorn where they ask how rare you want your beef & it comes with cauliflower cheese on the side foc

David the new owner and his staff were attentive, and made you feel part of the pub family. Everything you’d want from a village pub, the staff are always friendly and welcoming, it’s dog friendly (with water bowls and dog biscuits). Good selection of real ales, larger, wine etc, the food is consistently great with lots of choices on a seasonal menu. Recently ate in the newly decorated restaurant area as a table of 6, all had something different to eat and there were 6 empty plates! Would recommend.

Popped in for a quick lunch yesterday with a friend. We didn’t book but it was no problem, we were sat down in the newly refurbed restaurant which is gorgeous! I had the fish and chips - it was great. We are back on Saturday with a big group for a family birthday and can’t wait!

We visited The Dukes Head for the first time last week after being recommended by a family member and it didn’t disappoint! The pub had such a nice feel to it, lovely fire and also set in a lovely quaint village. The staff were amazing and the food and wine were just as good. Very impressed and would highly recommend making a visit. Thanks again and we’ll be back soon.

Such a shame that I cannot leave a better review. We booked as a table of 10 for mothers day. At the time of booking we where unaware that the main menu would not be available however at £45 per head we had high hopes for the mothers day menu. The scallops for starters where a gritty texture and really not very nice. When our mains arrived it was clear that the roast dinners had been left to sit for a while. My beef had to be sent back as it was extremely dry and tough to even cut. The Yorkshire’s where flat and doughy, the roast potatoes must have been sitting a while as they where no longer crispy at all. The whole meal was heavily seasoned with herbs and different flavours that they where overpowering to taste. We happily pay good money for good food but honestly these roast dinners where extremely poor. Our waitress on the other hand was lovely and very apologetic. She spoke to the kitchen and her manager with our feedback, At this point you would expect the manager to come over and speak to us. Its worth noting that we where not being rude in anyway in our approach, just giving honest opinions of the meal. Its very disappointing that the manager did not come to see us and instead let their young staff member deal with it alone, sending her back to us with feedback that they are surprised by our complaints which felt extremely dismissive It was obvious that they where busy and struggling to cope with the amount of covers they had booking in as we waited long periods of time between courses but honestly at the price we where paying, the standard should have been much better. The desserts where nice although one was forgotten about and came out when everyone was finished and another had to be sent back as not what was ordered. We left very disappointed and feeling as though we had completely wasted our money. I must note that on the way out we also walked passed a black bin bag of rubbish just sitting on the floor. The 2 stars given is purely for how lovely our waitress was. We would have liked to have tipped her but unfortunately as tips are shared and no other member of staff came to see us we didn’t feel this to be appropriate. An apology from the manager and a small gesture would have gone a long way.

Rolled in Saturday afternoon at 2pm. Helped to our seats and drinks served. We had the specials and really enjoyed them. One of the best meals we have had years. So good job Duke head.

Well, where to begin with my review as I'm absolutely spoilt for choice on how to rate it. From ambience, friendly staff, gorgeous food and cleaniless - this pub is by far one of the best local spots for miles. Whether it's for family dining, or a simple date night, to nipping in for a quick post walk drink by the fire, I am never leaving this place less than content. The food is faultless, and considering I am gluten free and always prepared for a limited menu choice in restaurants, there are so many GF substitutes available. On top of this the menu is frequently changing with delicious seasonal produce available and the dishes are true culinary delights. Great wine selection, lots of non-alcoholic options, and as an added bonus they sport a cocktail list which is a lovely surprise. A big shout out to the owner, as you can see that a lot of love and care is poured into this establishment on the daily, and his staff are always only too happy to accommodate any request with ample friendliness. For the warmer months - there is also a beautiful garden in the back and front terrace which are always covered in sprays of flowers.
