Superb pub. What you'd call a "proper" pub. Food is hearty and very tasty, minced beef and onion pie a particular favourite of mine. Beer selection is usually very good and staff offer good tips on beers that'll be to your taste.

Calls itself the "Wigan Pie Pub" but honestly, if you're in Wigan, and happen to be in the Raven, the very last thing you want to do is order a pie. Gross would be a compliment. Inedible is the only description I could give. I ordered meat and potato pie. Pastry is hard as concrete on the sides but floury sludge on the base. I'm not a pastry guy anyway truth be told, I'm all about the filling, but that's where it gets worse. Chunks of meat an inch long, might as well be rubber for the flavour and how long it takes to chew. I would rate the potato on the third piece but unfortunately there were only two pieces inside. Honestly, this makes a mockery of wigan being "pie eaters", nobody wants to eat pies like this, not even Wigan!

Good boozer with plenty of character. Multiple casks and keg beers (no craft beer). Barman was chatty and service was prompt. Beer was on form (cask). On the poor side was the food, steak and ale pie was good but the chips were virtually cold and ranged from thin to nanometer thin, they looked like the dregs of a potato chipping machine for £10.95 I was very disappointed.

Came for our yearly visit to Wigan this weekend and we always head straight for the Raven as soon as we have dumped our cases. Ordered a drink and asked if they were still serving food which was a yes. Was given a dirty glass with my cider, asked for another one which was worse. Ordered food which took an age to come. Plates thrown at us, box which contained sauces etc had only HP plus 2 tomato ketchup sachets which had been opened. I tried to get a member of staff to ask for mayo / salad cream, lad who served us walked past our table with headphones on so couldn't hear my polite "excuse me". Fish was burnt and partner couldn't eat it, chicken goujon sandwich was 3 goujons in bun with bits of lettuce. Not what the menu suggested at all. Went to the bar for another drink, 3 young girls behind bar - one having her tea, the other standing not taking anyone on and the third running about serving people. So disappointed that this great pub has gone downhill. We won't be back. Just an awful experience.

I mean, my first impression of this pub was kinda hampered by a woman bawling her eyes out, and making a scene just as soon as I had walked into the establishment (alcohol does tend to have that effect on people) — either way, the service was okay, and the decor was fairly rustic for the lack of a better word (which I liked) — either way (repetition), I was somewhat disturbed being in that establishment after that aforementioned introduction so maybe I’ll be back, and have a higher view of the place — or maybe I won’t, and won’t lol

I decided to call here for a beer and something to eat Thursday afternoon It wasn't that busy because of the time I was in The menu was mainly pies and sandwiches I had the steak and ale pie with chips mushy peas and gravy, the pies are home made but I thought the steak was a bit tough and pie a bit dry although the nice gravy did help The pub is very close to both train stations and being in the town center it has no car park would I go back again ? for a drink or two yes for food not so sure John

A traditional pub in the heart of Wigan. Convenient as a meeting place. Tetley's is almost always good they like serving the very pale beers that have become fashionable some are better than others. But they will usually let you try before you buy. Update: popped in for a pint and a pie with friends on a hot sunny mid may afternoon. Sat out in the beer garden which is a bit of a sun trap. I had a SUPERB chicken ham and leek pie with chips, mushy peas and gravy, my friends had the Stilton and steak. We would all highly recommend the pies. £10 for pie, chips and peas seems a lot but (as a bit of a miser myself) I thought it was worth it

5 of us visited for a few pints and lunch. Pie, chunky chips and mushy peas were very popular. Unfortunately the Steak & Ale Pie didn’t quite hit the spot with me or one of the others as it was very dry and over cooked. The Deception Pale Ale was good. Agree with the other reviews about the smell and the poor quality of the beer, just wish I’d read them first. Normally an independent pub is better than a chain but this one would have soon had new management if it was part of a chain. Doesn’t serve food which is just as well because I doubt it would get a hygiene certificate. As for the smell, not sure if it’s the toilets or general damp but it probably says why it was so quiet. Takes a hardened drinker to be happy in here.
