John Bull Chophouse in Wigan

Brilliant beer & rocky tunes in this lovely old pub.

I've been coming to this place on and off for about 40 years. It hasn't changed one bit. Love it! Some slight dissapointment some of the music on the juke box has crept into this century.

So Disappointed. Had heard so much about the pub I actually got the train over to check it out. Excellent range of cask beers but I didn’t get to try any because the barman kept overlooking me. Getting to the bar was difficult because of drinkers drinking at the bar - no problem with that but at least help someone out. Tried to attract the barman’s attention (it was too busy for one barman) but the final straws where when a bloke sat at the bar was served and he hadn’t finished his beer and another bloke shouting ‘2 pints of Fosters’. I’d been waiting ages by now and decided to find a pub which was friendlier and had more professional bar staff. Sorry , was really looking forward to trying the excellent range of beers.

First ever time at the bull and honestly, I’m gutted it’s taken me this long usually stick to the usual craft beer and real ale spots around town, which, don’t get me wrong, are decent – but this place absolutely knocks spots off the lot of them. We always swerved it ‘cos we thought it’d just be full of heavy rockers moshing , but apparently, that vibe was more back in the 80s and 90s. Turns out it’s nothing like that now. Came in with a few mates on a Friday night (January, too, so usually dead elsewhere), and it was packed ! Proper good beer selection, the people were sound, the staff were a laugh, and the jukebox is absolutely banging –full of rock tunes but indie and punk on there too Definitely still a rock pub, but there’s all sorts of people here, not just the older lot not dissing the olds, but it’s nice to mix it I’m honestly crying over all the years we missed out on this place. None of my mates ever bother writing reviews, but we had to after chatting to the guy behind the bar – proper legend. John Bull – 100% recommend. Get yourself down there!!

I’ve lived in Wigan all my life and never been to the John Bull until last night I’ll be going every week now ! fantastic range of beers great staff atmosphere is amazing. The Jukebox is unreal. I don’t ever do reviews but this place is 100%. I usually go to the craft beer and real ale places, but they are all severely lacking in atmosphere, which is sad but the Bull completely different! Absolutely fantastic I’m not bloody kiddin!!

Brilliant Beer and Friendly Staff

Absolute gem of a bar... i thoroughly enjoyed it..saturday teatime and the atmosphere was brilliant

Friendly staff and an excellent range of real ale. We would have stayed longer - but the music/jukebox was so loud, even at 2:45 in the afternoon, that we couldn't hold a conversation. A bit of a shame, really.

I've not been in the JB for years and it's brilliant. Maybe 8th wonder of the world.

This place is a must if you’re in Wigan 👍 The staff firstly are ace , super friendly and know what they’re doing. Great craft beer upstairs at weekend and the music is amazing and the people are always friendly. Love this place, rammed at weekend so get in early ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My mum and dad met here 20 years ago and have recently started taking me as of my 18th birthday. Its my new goto spot to drink. The customers are always friendly and nice. It can get crowded but there's plenty of outside seating too. If you're alternative and looking for a nice little pub in wigan this is the spot. Plus the jukebox has amazing songs. Oh and the staff are very onto of collecting empty glasses and wiping down the tables. NO STICKY TABLES!!!!! BRILLIANT.

Great pub but does get very busy here as there is a lot of outdoor space. Drinks were fairly expensive, hence the 4 stars. We enjoy coming here.

The Hop House - upstairs in the Chop House is open weekends - serving up some stellar craft beers and cider. Top quality service and great 🎶.

Love this pub, a Wigan Stalwart, great Jukebox and Atmosphere. However, the 'Hop House' seperate bar upstairs, which until recently nobody knew when it was actually going to be open is something of an enigma. Serving Craft Keg which is great to see, has now had a huge TV installed playing loud music and videos from old gigs (what's wrong with the pubs jukebox)? but more worringly the people serving the craft beer know absolutely nil about beer, tonight we had a rather nice collab from Brew York and Lakes Brew Co, a Peach sour. Top stuff. Next up (on the few pumps that were blanked off) was a brewery I'm familiar with, Yonder. A Peach sour again but with Marzipan and loads of other differences like the fact that it is a 'smoothie beer'- however the 2 beers were the same, totally identical!!!!!!!!!! nose, taste, texture, everthing, it WAS the same beer. Barman swore blind it wasn't and proceeded to show us pictures of the cellar with different lines coming off to the 2 pumps. Also when we left he offered my mate a fiver (which he refused) for his concern (a bit desperate and why would you do this if you done nothing wrong).Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with the guys' customer service! but they are 100% selling beers on multiple clips as different beers. To note one was more expensive than the other, one being 5% and the 'other' one being 6% (same beer). I've been coming in here since it first opened and seen it gradually go from cask and keg, to just keg and cans as they didn't realise leaving cask in the lines for a week when nobody knew they were open wasn't the best plan as it would simply go off, unlike keg. Lesson learned reopened again with keg only, half the taps on and 2 of them exactly the same under 2 different clips, beyond poor. FYI the Yonder beer you have advertised and are selling on the clip is a 'smoothie' this is not what you are selling. Unless things rapidly improve here it's another 'avoid' on the Wigan list like the Anvil, go to Wigan Central.

Belter of a place, ever visit Wigan it is a must. Best juke box around. Awesome place always busy.

Not to be missed on a pub tour in Wigan. It was Saturday night and it was busy, buzzing and belting. Good beer, great atmosphere.

One of my favourite pubs of all time. The atmosphere is brilliant, the building itself has a big history. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. I'm not a big drinker, but if I go out, you'll definitely find me in here at some point during the night. If you are in Wigan having drinks, find this little gem, you won't regret it.

I came here with the expectation of great music, great atmosphere and great staff! Let me tell you I was not disappointed. I was served by a man called Callum who was 10/10, just the right amount of charm and cheek. Drinks although seemingly expensive reasonable compared to the local area and music was brilliant although my songs didn’t come on despite being there for 2+hours. All in all for the hot barman and incredible venue I could do nothing but recommend this pub

Great music chill, good banter with the staff n locals, bands are a bonus when they ate on.

This has to be one, if not THE, best pub in Wigan. The jukebox is legendary (if you can ever get a song on!) and when we went, there was a live band on called Medusa, who were fantastic. Bar staff are always very friendly and the atmosphere is amazing!! 10/10

Ye it's got character and nice to sit outside during the summer. Used to have pool table upstairs shame it doesn't anymore. Drinks are a bit expensive but the best jukebox in Wigan.

Every pub should have a jukebox because that is a major factor of it being a pub to me. Sadly a huge percentage of pubs are closing....most of them had no jukebox....get my drift...ha ha. Top marks always to the John Bull.
