Sunday lunch was superb. My vegan meal was the best I’ve had for ages (thanks to the chef for the choices) & my friend thought she was given “half a pig”…. So a very delicious and generous roast pork meal. Staff were simply lovely. Can’t wait to come back. Thank you.

Turned up for my sisters 79th birthday and was well looked after and the food was absolutely fabulous, the roast beef was lovely and the roast potatoes lovely. The vegetarians were also so pleased with their option. The service was excellent and we were well looked after. The atmosphere of this pub is fabulous being so close to the opera house which I do not think I will ever attend! On leaving the pub I did so appreciate the peaceful atmosphere of this area. My daughter Louise had to stop off and buy loads of plants!

I was excited to visit the Ram having not done so for several years but remembering it as having excellent, special, high-quality food. What a change. The Sunday roast looks like something you would get in a carvery while being less generous. Vegetables were undercooked, portions small and the lamb did not taste like a high-quality high welfare product. At least it serves Harveys. But definitely not worth the trip nor the high prices.

We have been to The Ram on many occasions and I’m afraid that our visit yesterday evening was a bit of a disappointment. We ordered drinks(aperitif and wine) neither of which arrived either before the meal or with the meal. When questioned the waitress’s surly reply was “the bar is busy”. Well,if that’s the case, you should rearrange the meal delivery to accompany the drinks. I found the waitress’s service hurried and patronising. The food was ok.

Not our first visit. Love sitting outside in the sheltered patio sunshine. Great small plates and big plates. Husband loved the pork chop. Daughter had pork ciabatta and I had the ploughman’s. After several years of great visits to The Ram I was shocked at the change when we visited yesterday. I stood waiting with my 84 yr old mother for someone to show us to a table for 15 minutes. A waiter kept passing us but showed no interest. When I asked him he told me to go the bar and ask. Finally we just picked a table and sat down. After being given menus it was another long wait - no drinks, nothing. So we went and ordered our drinks and meals at the bar. My mother’s meal was not as advertised - instead of ham hock terrine she was given a bog standard slice of ham. The waitress didn't make any mention of this change. Such a shame as we used to love this place

Terrible overpriced sunday roast. Vegetables were barely cooked , almost raw roast potatoes and parsnips. Flavourless. Had to order two courses at £40 per person, service added automatically even though we sat for ages waiting for our order to be taken and had to find staff to tell them what we wanted. Nobody checked if we had any allergies and nobody enquired if all was ok whilst we were eating. We had booked but there was no table cleared for us. Hugely overpriced for what we served to sit on a dirty garden bench. Very very disappointing, we won’t eat here again.

We visited for lunch a few months ago and we were very disappointed. It was a Tuesday and the service was dreadful. We had to go to the bar to order our own drinks as nobody had come to take our order. Food was very average. Staff didn't have a clue and were walking past dirty plates. We asked for the service charge to be removed especially as we were charged service on drinks we had got ourselves!!!!! The waitress questioned why we wouldn't pay for service and we pointed out that we hadn't had any service. She said ' well we're short staffed' !!! That's not our fault. Never again!!!

Well, what can I say, firstly the food was lovely, excellent Sunday roast. Sadly that's where the good stuff ends. The rest of our experience was appalling. It wasn't too busy but I had to chase our drink order three times. It wasn't too taxing, just a spritzer and a beer. Our food order had been forgotten, so it was re-ordered. We sat on a dirty table, which we cleared ourselves, we sat amongst every other empty table piled high with discarded congealed meals. Not once were the dishes removed as the staff walked by. Even our glasses were dirty, I opted to ask for a clean one, my husband by this time was rapidly losing the will to stay. Not once were we asked if our meal was ok. When I visited the loo, I walked past the kitchen entrance, which was so dirty, the floor was littered with dirt and old food. Wish I had known this before we had ordered our food. All in all it really was a terrible experience, we won't be back and I would say best avoided. It doesn't take much to make things wonderful, maybe poor training was responsible, who knows?! I would add we weren't the only customers to experience this.

We went to the pub for Sunday lunch, the food was fantastic! Delicious roast and the sticky toffee pudding was a dream. The service however fell short, I feel for the one girl who seemed rushed off her feet doing everything whilst a few of the other workers just sat behind the bar looking lost. That being said when we did get service the waitress was lovely and apologetic. The service was just slow, you get seated 20 mins later someone takes your order. You have to go to the bar the next time for drinks as no one comes around again to ask. Empty plates left of table for a good 15/20 mins after everyone’s finished, Asks for dessert menu as one not offered. Then having to go up and ask to pay the bill as no one came round to take payment. These are all really tiny things but just made an impact. But our waitress was lovely and the tasted amazing

I believe that when you work in hospitality it is really important to make your costumers feel well looked after. I have to say although the location and aesthetic were stunning my whole experience was dampened by the waiters and waitresses energy. Listen, everyone has a bad day from time to time I understand that completely but the employees made us feel forgotten about and had a little bit of attitude. By the time the food came out it was dry and plain and tasted like oven food. Now for a drink in the sun this is a great place, but for food….. not sure. However when we told them about our awful experience they were courteous and understanding.

Dropped in for a bite of lunch. It’ an old pub in a lovely old village, Firle, near Firle house. Popular with ramblers, dog friendly with extensive outside seating. The menu was pub focused, basic menu but the ingredients were all excellent. The homemade soup was delicious, as were the whitebait (possibly the best I’ve ever had anywhere), the padron peppers were excellent and so were the ploughman’s and the steak ciabatta. My only criticism was the bread was a wee bit stale otherwise would recommend. Photo is of the old post office a few yards away.

It's a very charming rustic country pub and I found the staff to be very friendly with some great beers. Food wise it was fairly decent though for the price I'd expect better. I think really you're paying for the location more than anything, and that's fine as long as you aren't expecting the food to match the prices. That said we were there on a busy Sunday when they were banging out roasts which can always be a bit hit or miss so perhaps on another day sampling the full menu I'd have been more impressed. Still, I'd happily go back anyway

Nice enough pub, but the burger I had was overpriced, and the beef was so dry and tasteless. It was a huge patty, too big to eat without taking the burger apart, and almost no flavour, like it hadn't been seasoned at all. Thank god it came with cheese and bacon to give it some actual flavour.

Having heard great things about this pub- including a write up in The Times, I was incredibly disappointed. With the sun shining it was obviously busy which was fine and the staff were doing their best. A drink in the sunshine was great but after moving to the upstairs dining room for lunch we were let down by the food. I understand that Sundays are probably better for roasts but I didn’t fancy that and had two starters instead. The goats cheese and beetroot salad was a bag of supermarket rocket with a circle of goats cheese some fridge beetroot and a drizzle of balsamic it was very inspiring and something anyone would make at home in 2 mins! The gravelx salmon was get on more rocket with very dried French bread but the rye is said. The cauliflower cheese that came with the roasts was extremely bland and the white choc bread and butter pudding was in fact dark chocolate, again no flavour. For a pretty expensive place the food is bog standard pub grub at restaurant prices. Pretty village and nice for a drink after a walk but wouldn’t recommend for a meal. The toilets were also disgusting with no loo roll and only one cubicle working. Parking also a nightmare on Sundays!

Pretty poor experience all round. The service was not good: we had to ask three times for mayo and also the bill, which never came. Our waitress was unfriendly and brusque. The fish food portion was tiny for the price we paid and the bread and butter pudding was awful. Toilets were dirty, no hand soap or loo roll and apparently the urinal trough was almost overflowing with urine due to a blockage, according to our friend. All felt a bit rubbish.

Love this pub for ambience and location and usually really good food. But the last 2 times I've eaten there have been really disappointing. Had a roast a few weeks ago , all four of our meals were cold and were replaced promptly with no fuss. Not enough to put me off, stuff goes wrong sometimes. Just been back tonight and my confit duck ( slow cooked in fat - meant to melt in the mouth) was rock hard and almost inedible. No one came around to ask if our food was OK. So I left it and eventually got to tell someone who did apologise and took it off the bill. Don't think I'd risk a return visit now given the price of the meals. When you pay good money you expect good food.

The atmosphere in this cosy pub restaurant is lovely, especially in the autumn and winter when coal and log fires burn in all three dining areas. Locals chatting away in the small front bar suggest this a place which want to serve to local community just as much the visitors. I would thoroughly recommend calling in for a drink, either inside in the winter or on their large terrace during the warmer months. We’ve stayed there a couple of times and would say that, whilst the rooms are comfortable, other reviews suggesting it is overpriced probably have a point. Where it consistently seems to fall flat is the quality of food and the slapdash service. Our most recent visit on 1/11/24 was spoilt by generally mediocre food with two out of four mains seriously undercooked and not-as-described and service which was either too informal, intrusive (too many trips to the table to enquire if we were enjoying our meal - not really - please go away!!) or unprofessional: attempting to clear away dishes when some of us hadn’t actually finished. Disappointing

I last reviewed the Ram Inn ten years ago. On that occasion I gave it five 'stars'. Sadly the Ram has gone downhill (and some!). An overnight stay with supper was most disappointing. I was not given the room I had booked. The room I was shown to was smelly with litter on the floor, a dirty milk jug, a filthy shower screen, and a grubby loo held together with extruded silicone. I was looking forward to a hearty full English breakfast but was told that 'our kitchen doesn't open until 9am' - a full hour after my necessary departure time. Really? (No deduction was offered for lack of breakfast). Room TV only marginally larger than my iPhone and Freeview-dumb rather than smart. Unless the rooms are given a serious upgrade they cannot be described as 'luxurious' (as per website). The evening meal (confit of duck) was acceptable however the stale bread served a reflection of an overall lack of attention to detail. The bed was comfortable and the bedding OK. The Ram really needs to get its act together.

We went there for lunch after a country walk. We had booked the snug and the table was barely big enough for 4 people. We Were told they would bring us a menu but we waited some time for it. We got our own drinks from the bar while we waited. The food was average but overpriced . We waited some time for sauces to arrive but had to start eating before they came or food would have been cold. Our plates weren't cleared for ages and then we ordered dessert , which took forever to come. We were then asked if we wanted the bill! Obviously trying to get rid of us. When the bill arrived it had 10% service added which included the drinks that we got ourselves! This had not been made obvious anywhere. We asked for the service charge to be removed as the service was awful and this is just a village pub. The waitress asked why and when we told her that the service was awful, she said' well I'm on my own '. There were at least 4 staff. Won't be visiting again.D

We stayed for 3 nights so we could attend a wedding at the very nearby Firle Place. We had a "Junior Suite", it was nice but not what I'd expect for the price. The decor is beginning to look tired, a lot more shabby than chic, and our room hadn't been cleaned paticularly well before our arrival. We found two used tissues on one of the armchairs, a fair amount of hair on the bathroom floor and although the exposed beams are lovely they hadn't seen a duster in a while. On the day of the wedding I couldn't find an iron in the room, despite having an ironing board, I had to go downstairs and ask for one twice before I was given one (with a 20 minute wait between asking a second time). I got the impression I/it was an inconvenience for them. When we checked out, the service was poor. We went downstairs to say we were checking out and the response was "ok" and they took the room key. No "how was your stay?", "did you enjoy your stay?" or even a thank you for your stay. Just a bit disappointing, it felt like nobody cared. Onto the positives. The pub itself is lovely, great quiet location with good local beer. We ate in the restaurant twice for our evening meals, the food was very good and here the staff were attentive. Nice varied menu using local ingredients where possible, all well prepared and presented. Breakfast was also very good. Far in excess of a basic breakfast menu. From the standard full English, to steak and eggs. Also, alongside a very good continental selection. In summary. The restaurant is excellent and so are the restaurant staff. But the hotel/rooms side needs improvement, I think you can do better for the price, I expect a bit more at this price point (when searching the Eastbourne Grand wasnt a lot more expensive). But if you're visiting Firle Place, it's a reasonable option as its walkable from the pub.

Such a charming little pub located in the village of Firle. There is a large free to use car park at the rear of the pub. In addition to the indoor seating there is plenty of outdoor seating too. Visited on a hot summer's day and were in their front courtyard area.

A superb pub… with lovely staff who are very helpful. I was given a menu-which they’d taken the trouble to actually mark out what I could and couldn’t eat (I’ve allergies that aren’t the usual)… and the Sea Bream was excellently cooked and presented. A smashing gem in a beautiful village.

Lovely pub in Firle, we stayed here 2 nights midweek. Room very comfortable and cheery, facilities good. Atmosphere downstairs friendly and busy.....nice little areas to sit, 2 outside areas which are very nice in the sunshine to sit and watch the world go by. Food first class, outstanding I would say. Very interesting menu, and for breakfast too......thoroughly recommend.

What a disappointing experience. Indifferent staff. Mediocre food, poorly presented. Watery Coca Cola (from pump). No wonder the place was almost empty. Lovely location with lots of potential but needs a major shake up.

I don’t like giving poor reviews but our get together with friends at The Ram was so disappointing I feel I should. As a party of six we waited 10 minutes before our order for wine was taken - this didn’t appear until we reordered it later with another request for a menu. Our food order arrived in drips and drabs nearly an hour later . First the sides of cauliflower ( only just warm which were sent back to be reheated) and then two of the orders of bream appeared without the third which was another ten minutes at least. This person didn’t get their order until we had finished ours. The food is overpriced for what was a disappointingly, disjointed meal . We won't be using this pub again !

Took the family for lunch. Ordered the ham hock, however it arrived straight from the fridge and was unspreadable and inedible. Complained and was asked if I’d like a dessert. Pants.

Fabulous pub and most staff friendly and professional. However the lady behind the bar on my visit was far from friendly, no greeting, couldn't/ wouldn't smile or bring herself to say thank you. If you are going to charge £4 for a soft drink some eye contact at least would be good.

Do not stay there, not peaceful at all, very loud. Filthy room and They might need to get a surveyor in and check the place out too. The floors are basically floating at this point. Rooms are in bad shape in need of modernising, floor boards are separated due to floor movement, holes around the shower, no tv in the room or room service. Might be a good place for food and drinks but wouldn’t recommend spending the night. Feel ripped off for the price

Pub is lovely but the hotel element left me feeling a little ripped off. Small rooms which were not very clean and missing soaps, tea bags and toilet rolls. for money it was not good value

Visited for lunch on a Saturday. The food was fairly good but unfortunately the service poor. Drinks took a while to be served, when food came we weren’t asked if we needed anything else eg condiments, we clearly had empty glasses when our food was served but we weren’t asked if we wanted another round, no one checked if our food was ok (would have again liked to be asked if we wanted more drinks), then were immediately offered dessert menus, ended up ordering espressos which came in grubby, chipped cups and no offer of sugar etc (the staff just seemed to just serve and dash off). We were really hoping to spend a couple of hours here having drinks, pudding etc and would have easily spent double what we did but it just felt like they didn’t want our business so we just went to the bar and got the bill. Such as shame as it’s a lovely setting.

Booked a table for 12.15 on Saturday 1st June in this picturesque country pub in Firle. Had been here before more than 20 years ago! Only ordered a ploughmans for 2 ie 1 ploughmans and 2 plates. Our drinks were simply 2 americano coffees. The pub was very busy and soon all tables were full within a half an hour. I found it a bit too noisy and the tables too close together. We found the food very ordinary. Wont be coming back.

We stayed at this hotel for two nights as we wanted to explore the area . The whole experience was excellent , staff were very friendly and welcoming. Firle village is a step back in time with some quaint cottages. We ate in the pub / restaurant on our first night and really enjoyed the delicious food so booked for our second night as well. Food was excellent , well presented and very hot. Good choice of wines and beers and a lovely atmosphere. The breakfasts were outstanding and one of the most memorable breakfasts we have experienced. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Our room Bo Peep was cosy warm and the bed super comfortable. Gorgeous soft fluffy towels and dressing robes were amazing. Great facilities in the room including a coffee machine and fridge. Very peaceful room and good en suite. Good National trust properties near by. Great stay

On arrival the bar was busy dirty and slow with dirty beer glasses all over the bar and next to clean glasses so you didn't know if you were getting a clean or dirty glass. After being shown to our table we then requested the menu ourselves on were we all decided to have the steak ( which had been recommended) earlier that day. Our food arrived very quickly and although very tasty the steak was very disappointing due to it being full of gristle and since. Whilst eating our food we were accompanied by very large groups of blow flies. Which were everywhere and all around the windows. A family member made the manager aware of this, and was told it was because the door had been left open. We were given a small discount off our meals and did not even look at the sweet menu. Toilets were filthy dusty and dirty. We will not be returning to The ram and definitely will not be recommended it.

A traditional Sussex pub at the bottom of the South Downs. Great to have a drink and a bite to eat after walking to the top. Large terrace and garden to take advantage of any rays.

We went to the ram today for a family sunday roast. It was incredibly overpriced for what we got and actually not that good. The meat was tough, the roast potatoes poor, not crispy at all, the gravy was watery and it came out luke warm. Not impressed at all. The cost was towards the higher end of what most pubs charge for sunday roast these days but for what we got we really disappointed and will not be returning. Its a shame because the location is great. The food could have been and should have been so much better for the price.

I have been going to The Peacock for over 30 years but last night was very disappointing. Firstly, I phoned in advance to tell them I have a lactose intolerance and could I have the steak with a non-dairy sauce. The girl was very dismissive and just said speak to your server tomorrow when you come. When we arrived, despite having told them we were there for our wedding anniversary, we were allocated seats in the pub, which I refused and then we got a table in the actual restaurant. Again I informed the waitress of my dairy intolerance and asked for a non-dairy sauce to go with my (very expensive) steak. When dinner arrived there was no sauce at all! And when I asked I was told I couldn’t have one. Never in 30 years has this ever been a problem before. VERY POOR SERVICE. I don’t know if the pub has changed owners since we last went but they REALLY need to up their game when it comes to allergies and intolerances. It spoilt out wedding anniversary celebrations and we will now have to look elsewhere for a nice meal out.

The oysters was perfect and the lamb was just amazing! I almost licked the plate. (The english cheese selection was also good, but I would have liked to get some information about where, what and order of eating.)

Booked a table ages ago to celebrate a friends ‘special’ birthday which meant that our lunch was very much looked forward to, mainly because I have been a few times before & the food is always excellent. If this review was based on the food alone then it would have been five stars. Sadly and very disappointingly our much anticipated celebration was spoiled from the outset by the less than welcoming greeting, from not one, but two members of staff. One of them rather worryingly appeared to be front of house. Not even a smile…… Neither the FOH guy nor our waiter was remotely interested in explaining the menu, recommending/describing any of the dishes (despite my attempt to engage him in a conversation along these lines). Our orders were taken with zero interaction from our waiter beyond him standing at the end of our table with a solemn look on his face. I’m not going to go into what we actually ate, mainly because my memory of the day does not go past these two miseries…….maybe they had both just got out of bed the wrong side….not the job to be in if one wears one’s mood!!

This restaurant is pretentious! Over priced lack lust food. When paying we asked to remove the service charge due to freedom of choice and we were happy to tip in cash, however the manager challenged this in a confrontational way even though we explained that money is tight for us at the moment! She then did not remove the charge and made us feel so uncomfortable we just payed it! This is not cool and gave off a very hostile vibe. The food was totally overpriced and miniature so if you want to have an enjoyable and affordable pleasant dining experience don’t go here!
