Used to go here regularly for lunch whilst working at Falmer campus. Five years on we revisited the Swan to see if much had changed. It hasn’t really, which is a shame, but we did kind of expect it. I would love loved to see a more progressive menu of traditional pub classics. Steak chunks in the pie, not minced. Calamari Rings isn’t a main in my food book, sorry. However, the food was hot, simple but tasty and came out quickly. Friendly staff as always.

Great people. Excellent beer well served and kept. Keeping up the style and service of the pub that has been in the family for 120 years now. I've been coming here since the 70's when my parents brought me here. Love it ❤️

Really friendly service, and reasonable prices on drinks! Found the layout of the building quite confusing, with all inner doors shut we didn't know how to get to the bar, and then didn't know how to get outside or that there was an outside area on the other side of the pub. A minor thing, but maybe less welcoming for people like us who are not regulars

Great little pub, it actually has 3 bars but always nice beer and great service, really nice place to be when the weather is better because they open the barn and have a large outside area you can sit, easy 10 min walk from The Swan to the Amex Stadium as well, so you can get there early enjoy your pint, then get to the stadium via the bridge that goes behind the village. or over the main road.

Came here for a family meal as it was ideal since it's just down the road from the university. Really nice local pub. Was fairly busy but were able to get a table. We all went for a Sunday roast which you can have chicken, beef or pork. All come with roast potatoes, cabbage, Yorkshire pudding etc. I think we all agreed it was really great food and plenty of it. Service was top notch, very friendly locals too! Price was reasonable for what you got. Overall I'd definitely come back here for a meal/pint any day.

Lovely little pub, made ideal with the real fireplace that was kept stoked. I had the gammon roast that was what I would call "a proper plate like Mum would make", it wasn't all herbs/bells and whistles, but a hearty plate of food with swede, stuffing etc. The servers were very nice, but it took a while to get served, get sauces etc, and things like the fact you order at the bar wasn't made clear, so when we went up a number of other tables then joined as they had all been waiting at their tables for someone to go over.

I gave a 4 stars as it was a Saturday afternoon around lunch time but there wasn't much people in the place itself. I went before like 5-6 years ago and it was a blast with tons of people with a lot of atmosphere, wish it could of been the same this time around. I had a chocolate brownie with some ice cream and frozen raspberries and it just melted in my mouth what was really nice but would of enjoyed a little more firmness to it. Staff were lovely and quick to respond to customers but maybe because it was slow what is expected for having quick service, Not being mean just truthful. But all in all had a great time!

I absolutely love this pub. One of the best in the county. To give you an idea how well worth a visit here is.. I live in Shoreham a town with 20+ drinking establishments within the town limits (trust me, we do a pub crawl every year) and I am quite happy to drive 20 minutes down the road to be warmly welcomed at The Swan. There are several reasons why.. They are a proper beer drinkers pub. No music piped in. Open fires when needed and house beers you’ll find nowhere else) two examples being Hacker Pschorr & Palmers. Plus friendly knowledgeable staff who don’t intrude but have a funny story if you wish to engage. They do also have sport on but with 3 separate bar areas, if that’s not your thing then you can relax If only all pubs were like this!

Lovely homely village pub on site of the old Brighton - Lewes main road. Unusually (and very welcone) is that this is a Palmers brewery pub. Not sure Palmers have another pub this far East of the Dorset brewery. Always superb, excellent selection of Palmers ale on the pumps; plus some other guest ales. The Swan is the closest pub to the The Amex Stadium, home of the mighty Brighton & Hove Albion FC. Consequently, pub gets extremely busy on match days. The pub barn gets opened up on match days to show live games on a big screen. Fantastic pub which oozes atmosphere

Firstly, well done for the Covid precautions - setting a great example. Staff are very friendly and helpful, and there were no long waits for anything. We went for Sunday lunch, and I can see why they advised booking as it was pretty full. Food was really good, and plates piled high! Amazing value, and I have paid much more for obviously mass-produced food - whether it was all cooked from scratch on the premises or not I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of it was. Parking was easy on the street outside on a Sunday.

Living in Central Brighton, with Covid far from dismissed we have been flrting with venues away from the city centre and thus returned to The Swan lunchtime yesterday for the first time in over two years. Being tucked a way in Falmer Village, it is easy to forget it, something we are ashamed to say we had but no longer… A truly lovely pub with a great, relaxing atmosphere, friendly staff, drinks at affordable prices and superb food. What’s more, it is easily accessible by public transport so we are already planning for a Sunday roast in the very near future.

The Michelin Guide clarifies that service quality does not influence the awarding of a Michelin Star: “It’s entirely up to the restaurant to decide what style of service it wants to offer – and that has no bearing on a Michelin Star.” In Lewes, Dill restaurant exemplifies this distinction. The food is fine, although it doesn’t meet my expectations for Michelin-guide quality. The £200 bill for the table (excluding dessert, for reasons to become clear) doesn’t represent good value for money, in my opinion. However, taste and value are subjective. What is indisputable is the combination of a two-hour dining limit, slow service that consumes this entire period—leaving no time for dessert or after-dinner drinks—and the abrupt manner in which staff enforce this policy. Without prior warning, a staff member informed us, bluntly and curtly, that our time was up and we needed to pay and leave immediately. No desert for you, guys, by order of management. Despite our repeated requests, the manager never came to discuss and perhaps resolve what became a very unpleasant situation for us. Setting a time limit is acceptable if communicated in advance and aligned with the kitchen’s ability to serve promptly. When the first course arrives close to an hour after seating and the main course close enough to the two-hour mark, this is unacceptable. Having a staff member rudely dismiss guests whose time has expired, while the manager avoids addressing the situation, is worse. And so, if you’re inclined to dine at a restaurant with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, spend £200 for the table on reasonable but not great food without being allowed to order dessert or coffee, and enjoy being unceremoniously thrown out when your time is up by a rude staff member backed by an elusive manager who failed to deliver food on time—then Dill is indeed the place for you.
20 Opinions
This restaurant is pretentious! Over priced lack lust food. When paying we asked to remove the service charge due to freedom of choice and we were happy to tip in cash, however the manager challenged this in a confrontational way even though we explained that money is tight for us at the moment! She then did not remove the charge and made us feel so uncomfortable we just payed it! This is not cool and gave off a very hostile vibe. The food was totally overpriced and miniature so if you want to have an enjoyable and affordable pleasant dining experience don’t go here!

Gosh! It's dirty. Pulling out the chair really didn't want to sit on it. The chairs need recovering or throwing away. Staff didn't know anything about the menu and had to keep asking the cook. The toilets are awful. Really need a make over.
