Friends suggested the restaurant as we were visiting Charleston Lewis less than a 5 min walk away. It was on my agenda to visit since Grace Dent’s review nearly 18 mths ago. Although I am not vegetarian/ vegan I try to keep my SatFats down because of high cholesterol. The King Oyster Mushroom Steaks were the best veggie/vegan meal I have ever had. My wife went for the Venison steak and said it was very good (better than the steak she had the night before at Lighthouse in Wimbledon Village, and no, we don’t normally eat out twice in a fortnight let alone24 hours!). The crab salad and pear sponge were fine. If I had any criticism, the triple cooked chips looked anaemic not just on my plate but on other tables too, and tasted rather ordinary. This is a small local restaurant also with counter service so one shouldn’t expect too much of it. I liked it, and would go again, but the ambience may not appeal to those wanting a “special occasion”

I drive past here every day after work and it was always somewhere I wanted to try, and there was such an excellent review in The Guardian newspaper, so we came here for a date lunch and we were not disappointed. We both had a three course menu, I had the poached pear with beetroot, whipped goats cheese and my partner had the crab, we thoroughly enjoyed it, I had the vegan steak with triple cooked chips, a beautiful black garlic sauce that was a thing of beauty, my partner had the venison, our third dish was a very delectable and super rich chocolate delice that was based on toasted marshmallow. I had a coffee and some petit fours, my partner had a Sussex brandy. The restaurant only has a few tables and it was busy, we were sat at the counter and we had such a great conversation with the head and pastry chef (who deserves a special mention, kudos to her for her very excellent marshmallows), they were both very attentive and knowledgeable about their craft. I can wholeheartedly recommend this beautiful little restaurant to everyone. Only took one photo and that was the dessert, simply because I couldn't wait to eat the amazingly good food, one other thing that definitely needs to be mentioned is the house made focaccia bread and the two different flavours of butter, both of which have their own merits. Congratulations to an excellent team for such a great lunch 💜

Initial impressions were good. Inside, the restaurant had a warm wood-clad vibe with an open kitchen along the length of the dining room. We were shown to the outside dining area. The area was a small enclosed concrete back yard with metal table and chairs, some of which perched next to a 12 inch drop. The single row of outside lights, the canopy and the wall heaters which would certainly be inadequate at any lower temperature, failed to disguise the sad back yard feeling of the place. This was disappointing and presaged the following experience. Amuse bouches arrived. A tiny cheese (and pea?) tartlet. They were cold and thus comprised tough pastry and congealed filling. My starter was prawn cocktail and this contained 5 large and tasty prawns and some shredded lettuce with maryrose sauce.. However there was nothing that lifted it beyond the average 1970s version into a gastronomic experience reasonably expected for the price. My wife's guinea fowl, in terms of size and accompaniments was good. My main was venison. This was somewhat overcooked and served with a very salty gravy. The pak choi was pak choi (what can I say). The seared fennel could have done with a bit of pre-cooking before searing and was virtually raw. In all it was a dish that I could have prepared myself. My wife's halibut was a decent slab of fish but overcooked, rather dry and tasteless. Our guests also had the halibut and with a bit of subtle probing they also admitted they found it dry and rather tasteless. Service was OK Bill for 4 with one bottle of wine (£45) and no pre-dinner drinks was a few pence under £300. Two of us had the two course menu at £47.50 each, our guests had the three course menu at £57.50 each, service charge was 12.5%. I have to say that at these prices we were expecting a rather more satisfying experience. Very good restaurants closer to home offer such menus at considerably lower prices and offer far better value in terms of ambience and quality of food.

I booked a table at Fork for Lunch on Saturday 3rd August 2024 to celebrate our 22nd wedding anniversary. Having read a few of the other reviews on Tripadvisor that morning, I started to get quite concerned that I had made a mistake. We could not have been more wrong. I do not know what the previous reviewers’ problems were, but we had a delightful meal. We picked a lovely day, so decided to sit out in the courtyard rather than in the restaurant itself. The restaurant however looks lovely, modern with quality furniture. The menu is concise but a good choice for both meat eaters and vegetarians. My only complaint would be that we had to compromise on our choice of main course to enable us to have the same colour wine. Originally my husband wanted the duck and I wanted the fish but we did not want a bottle of wine each. To start I had the whipped goats cheese with beetroot, figs and sesame brittle which was absolutely delicious and looked really pretty on the plate. My husband had the pulled Sussex beef short rib which was also really tasty, but due to its nature, nicely plated but not as pretty. My husband then plumped for the chicken Caesar salad which he said was one of the best he has ever had, I had the local (Cod) fish & Chips which was delicious. The batter was crunchy throughout. The chips were really good, triple cooked to perfection. The peas had the right amount of mint and the tartare sauce was really tasty. We then shared a dessert, the chocolate delice which was exactly what it said, delicious, perfectly balanced with the blackberry coulis. The home made petit fours with the coffee were also delicious, especially the white chocolate tiffin which was a morsal of sweetness to behold. The service was excellent. The waiter, whose name I think was Jake (apologies if I am wrong) managed the perfect balance of attentiveness and letting us enjoy our meal. He was very knowledgeable about the wines, many of which are from local vineyards. All in all it was a very enjoyable experience and we will return

Oh dear……this has to rank as one of the worst dining experiences in the last decade. The initial impressions are favourable - but beyond the welcome and wine, there isn’t a single redeeming feature. The kitchen clearly has lost a head chef of any reasonable standard, or just leaves it to others mid-week. Strange butters accompany the bread - date and pancetta anyone? The starters arrived and looked - well, like school dinner. Grey runner beans, thick gravy (v. Salty) tough guinea fowl (clearly just sous vide) and unclear mackerel that were certainly not fresh. Gulp. Main courses proved things can get worse - the lamb was undercooked (again done in a bag) and fatty - whilst the duck had no flavour (again done in a bag). The same grey beans and gravy were served with the duck! The bill was £144 - I’m always happy to pay for good food - but always upset to be billed for terrible food and not even asked how it was. Avoid.

Disappointing that the cooking standards have dropped so far from when the restaurant originally opened. The food was unappetising, lamb cold, fatty and chewy with no flavour, sardines not fresh. Everything appeared to come out of plastic bags and then tipped onto plates by less than enthusiastic team who spent most of the time chatting. If you have an open kitchen then make sure people are cooking not just boiling in the bag! Green beans were grey, house bread tasteless, dense and underseasoned. Dinner for two with three glasses of wine £150. Your money would be better spent elsewhere.

Didn't know whether to give this 2 or 3 stars. Blue cheese mousse was absolutely delicious. Pulled beef short rib ok. Crab salad (£4.50 supplement) not seasoned and dumped in a bowl of iceberg lettuce with no bread. Totally underwhelming. We were warned that the duck (£4.50 supplement) would be be served pink. It arrived grey. The Bisto jus didn't help. Overcooked green beans and unseasoned Pak choi added to the disappointment. The beetroot was, however delicious. Chocolate & cherry pudding was amazing so ended on a high! Have visited here a few times and have been very impressed. Not today, sorry.

Third time wasn’t a charm… we first ate here when it first opened and it was amazing, for a tiny kitchen the food was wonderful but each time we have visited since it has sadly worsened at each visit… this was and will be the last time we dine here. The set menu sounded interesting but it was all lacking finesse and over seasoned and even the bread and butter was unappealing… we had a bizarre tomato focaccia with butter, it was lacklustre , flat and overpowering tomatoes didn’t go with the butters … should have just asked to leave at that point… Then each course was overly seasoned, the sauce on the duck was overly salty and like an old school dinner gravy and washed the whole dish with heavy salty flavours… the lamb rump fatty, cold and chewy… I ate less than half of each dish and not once was I asked if it was ok… the dessert was just disappointing… I wish I could praise this restaurant but it seems to have changed chefs too many times and what is left is just lacking. There are other restaurants in Lewes worth prioritising first!

Lovely restaurant, we had a fantastic meal for 4, every dish was a triumph. The staff were attentive but not overbearing. Only slightly annoying that the menu online is different to what was in-house - we had to reconsider our options! The atmosphere was nice and calm. The food for some was well prepared, cooked and served. However both the duck and beef (4 meals in total) were in all our opinions were a little chewy and slightly over done. Both steaks were ever so slightly pink on the outside, but when you got to the middle of the steak it wasn’t pink at all. I have eaten here before and very much enjoyed the meal. But on this occasion we did not. My test is would I recommend the restaurant or would I go again. The answer to both is probably not

I went with my partner on account of a starring Guardian review but was disappointed from start to finish. The starter was average, a little undercooked and the gravy was mild. The main steak was overcooked, still tasted ok, but I wouldn't be writing this review if the restaurant wasn't unbelievably expensive. The food was average but the price of the meal is startling. The wine was the best part but even that was on the expensive side. I'd strongly reconsider if you're looking for a fine dining experience, because this really left a lot to be desired. Also the toilet is up a strange set of stairs that feels like a staircase in a student house. Really disappointing. Better off going to a pub for a wholesome fish and chips and saving yourself the money.

I had heard great things about this restaurant before I came, but I have to say I was a little disappointed. The starters were not hugely tasty and seemed like some of the flavours had been randomly put on a plate (some wilted kale with chicken liver pate?). I had a steak for my main which was overcooked (I asked for medium rare) and my boyfriend had duck, which he also said was quite disappointing. The puddings were also not amazing, the pastry in the millefeuille was undercooked and the chocolate filling was lacking in flavour. The service was great, the wine was delicious and it was a lovely vibe, but I found the food a little to be desired - and the price quite astronomical for what it was.

Had booked a meal for our wedding anniversary but when we turned up we discovered we were sitting at the Kitchen Counter on small and uncomfortable bar stools. My wife has a bad back so we had to cancel and leave. There was nothing on the website when we booked to explain/warn what kitchen counter meant. I had assumed we would be sitting a table. Sad as we were looking forward to it. May try another time but will make sure we book a proper table. I would suggest Fork needs to make it clear what kitchen counter really means.

I was expecting a treat here since it has such great reviews and it is priced so highly but I was quite disappointed. The service was very friendly (12% compulsory tip though). The food however was mediocre at best, sadly. When I read the dishes it sounded really good but the taste, quality and freshness just weren't there. The focaccia was bland, the butter didn't have much of a taste and it was supposed to be flavoured with chili and something else. The starter was a pure with not much to it other than stale bread croutons and very chewy parsnip and the main was fried tomato sauce like the one you can purchase at the supermarket with some dumplings. The filling in the dumplings was OK but the dough way too thick and for some reason it wouldn't cool down so I burned my mouth several times, ouch! We had a couple next to us that was quite loud, not sure if this was due to the acoustics of the restaurant or just them being loud. We have eaten in other places in Lewes for a fraction of the price and much better food. They seriously need to step it up! The wine and the vermouth were good as were the smoked rapeseed oil and the truffle oil in the pure and I love that they have and promote local ingredients. But all in all way way too overpriced and not tasty/well cooked enough. Won't be back :0( Response to response: It's shame that you don't take the feedback seriously. Stale bread and bland focaccia should ring alarm bells. The rest you could say it's subjective but I could honestly whip this at home pretty easily and improve it. I did say the food was OK to the waiter. In a place like yours you'd think less than excellent, delicious, amazing, and so on should be a concern. In terms of the tip, you should leave it up to the guest rather than include in in the bill, even if it's discretionary as you say.

Loved all the food including the amuse bouche and the bread, everything was well thought out and worked well. Service was efficient and very welcoming. Tables are quite close together but this wasn’t a problem for us as the ones either side were free and meant the restaurant had just the right number of people to staff ratio. Kitchen counter seats are small hard wooden stools with no comfort. The kitchen is very cramped and not very tidy. Most of the kitchen staff work is done in advance with basic cooking of meat and fish only - then assembled with mostly prepared items. Ingredients seem fair quality but not special. Kitchen staff are friendly but overall we were disappointed. Reviews by Grace Dent and Henry Sitwell are complimentary but seem somewhat over generous. Does not live up to the reviews and we shan't be returning. There was nothing offered which a modestly competent home cook could not better. £60 per head for two courses, wine and coffee leave this nmo bargain! Value was nearer to £40 per head.

There are very few good restaurants in Lewes so based on reviews I was excited to try Fork. I met a friend for lunch and we both had the mackerel starter…..and I must confess to being rather underwhelmed. The skin on the fish could have been crispier but it was the large dollop of crème fraiche that rather spoilt it…...it just didn’t work for me - oily fish plus rich crème/fat which didn’t cut through and showcase the fish and I felt the balance was just not right…..needs tweaking by maybe adding one of the classics - horseradish, crispy apple, sour cherry? Or lots more pickled cucumber. My main was the Fork Garden salad, again I chose to have fish - fish of the day (hake) with it…..but, what a very strange combination and presentation. The heritage tomatoes were there in abundance - but, they had been used with the mackerel and it all tasted a bit samey…. black quinoa, broad beans, green leaves with the fish poised on top - nicely cooked but all rather bland and uninteresting. Dessert lacked texture - blackberry mousse ok, biscuit crumb that had been blitzed to powder and can’t really remember the couli? Such a shame but on a more positive note - my friend really loved her braised ox cheek and the Maitre D was welcoming and friendly. I’d like to return but would love to see some improvements….especially with regard to balance and texture of dishes.

We had a feeling that we were slightly too late - should have gone a year ago, when it was not so established, or maybe we picked an off-day on a Tuesday evening … Food slightly under seasoned in places, bread starter with whipped butters left an oil-coated palate, service felt to us slightly rushed and superficial, maybe because we sat outside in October with the garden heaters on, but the venison main course was an absolute delight and highlight. Overall: ratio of value to price did not quite live up to our expectations - as we felt we have had more wow-factor in terms of food experience in other local “neighbourhood kitchens”.

Goodness gracious wow! My advice is challenge your self when eating here. Avoid the familiar and be bold. Genuinely the last time I had food like this was at the Windgrove. However based on the dishes I had, I would rate the Fork's residence chef's imagination as more ambitious even than the windgrove's excellent food. I had Beetroot carpachio with a surprising twist, an Alfristian chicken ballotine (with side honey and mustard glazed carrots) that allowed the delicate wild mushrooms to sing with all there heart, finally finishing with the most sublime gooseberry mousse on a ginger crumb base. Can I think of a criticism? well no it was just perfect. Decades of posh business dinners in London didn't deliver food half as good as this. Be warned though. This is superb nouvelle cuisine. If you're not used to it, want to hang on to the familiar, rather than adventuring with new tastes, then the portion sizes may worry you as they did me. However, fear not, the richness of the food and maybe the odd glass of Pinot Noir deliver a life experience that should be done but everyone at least once. Just wonderful wonderful wonderful what a chef! 😊.

The smoked mackerel and sirloin beef were outstanding but the other courses were very good too. The restaurant is small and cozy and attracts a very eclectic crowd. Service was perfect - attentive but not overbearing. It's very conveniently located in the centre of Lewes.

Could not fault this place. Food was just spectacular and the service warm, efficient and friendly. The staff went out of their way to make my 5 year old daughter comfortable and welcome. A truly special place. Thank you for a memorable night, we’ll be back!

Have visited twice now, once for lunch, and once for dinner. Food is excellent, especially starters and desserts, which seem to have more "wow" factor. Portions are decent sized. Atmosphere is relaxed, not formal at all, and if you are there on a nice day, it is lovely to sit in the courtyard. Service is great, very friendly and chatty but not intrusive. They do their best to upsell you the bread, sides and drinks - I don't blame them but this could be taken down a notch in my opinion. Great for a special occasion or if you fancy a treat. Good range of meat, fish, and vegetarian options which didn't feel like afterthought.

What a lovely meal. All 3 courses were great. Thought the portions were spot on, just the right amount. Great classic flavours with some little twists. The effort put in for gravy, for Sunday's roast is awesome! (Started on a Tuesday) Definitely booking for that in the near future.

Very disappointing food. We'd heard great things about this place (including 4 & 5 star reviews from food critics) and so consequently had high hopes, but every dish was average at best. I wonder if the chef has changed recently - the fact that the dishes' presentation was so different (worse) to what we'd seen online suggests this might be the case. Everything was under-seasoned - after 1 bite of the starter we were asking for the salt - and the beef i had was overcooked and tough. Gutted.

We ate here last weekend. The restaurant was not full but even so, the acoustics made conversation a little tricky. Sitting behind a panel we were easily forgotten and had a long time to wait for our drinks order to be taken and be delivered. We enjoyed the amuse bouche (the currently popular arancini), although our cold starters were delivered with such speed that I was still part way through my very hot and fresh rice ball... Our starters were tasty (salmon tatare and gazpacho) but considering their small size and the cost for 2 courses, I would have expected a little bread or perhaps a cracker, to be included. My fish main was mainly tasty but my small portion of brill was overcooked and the description said it came with asparagus and samphire. It was served with a delicious lobster sauce, the samphire was perfect, although I had to look hard for the asparagus, a single tip! We ordered some chips on the side and these were perfection. My panna cotta dessert was disappointing as it didn't wobble, it was set solid. Can't really see us returning anytime soon, which is a shame.

My food was delicious, I had asparagus starter and vegetable wellington, however my partner's fish option was not so great. The seating at the kitchen counter was uncomfortable. The high barstools should at least swivel to allow you to converse with your partner rather than stare at the staff, which in itself was quite awkward, not knowing whether to engage in conversation or not (them or us). Definitely overpriced, especially with regard the kitchen counter experience, and the wine list not offering anything below £30.

Used to go here regularly for lunch whilst working at Falmer campus. Five years on we revisited the Swan to see if much had changed. It hasn’t really, which is a shame, but we did kind of expect it. I would love loved to see a more progressive menu of traditional pub classics. Steak chunks in the pie, not minced. Calamari Rings isn’t a main in my food book, sorry. However, the food was hot, simple but tasty and came out quickly. Friendly staff as always.

The Michelin Guide clarifies that service quality does not influence the awarding of a Michelin Star: “It’s entirely up to the restaurant to decide what style of service it wants to offer – and that has no bearing on a Michelin Star.” In Lewes, Dill restaurant exemplifies this distinction. The food is fine, although it doesn’t meet my expectations for Michelin-guide quality. The £200 bill for the table (excluding dessert, for reasons to become clear) doesn’t represent good value for money, in my opinion. However, taste and value are subjective. What is indisputable is the combination of a two-hour dining limit, slow service that consumes this entire period—leaving no time for dessert or after-dinner drinks—and the abrupt manner in which staff enforce this policy. Without prior warning, a staff member informed us, bluntly and curtly, that our time was up and we needed to pay and leave immediately. No desert for you, guys, by order of management. Despite our repeated requests, the manager never came to discuss and perhaps resolve what became a very unpleasant situation for us. Setting a time limit is acceptable if communicated in advance and aligned with the kitchen’s ability to serve promptly. When the first course arrives close to an hour after seating and the main course close enough to the two-hour mark, this is unacceptable. Having a staff member rudely dismiss guests whose time has expired, while the manager avoids addressing the situation, is worse. And so, if you’re inclined to dine at a restaurant with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, spend £200 for the table on reasonable but not great food without being allowed to order dessert or coffee, and enjoy being unceremoniously thrown out when your time is up by a rude staff member backed by an elusive manager who failed to deliver food on time—then Dill is indeed the place for you.

This restaurant is pretentious! Over priced lack lust food. When paying we asked to remove the service charge due to freedom of choice and we were happy to tip in cash, however the manager challenged this in a confrontational way even though we explained that money is tight for us at the moment! She then did not remove the charge and made us feel so uncomfortable we just payed it! This is not cool and gave off a very hostile vibe. The food was totally overpriced and miniature so if you want to have an enjoyable and affordable pleasant dining experience don’t go here!

Gosh! It's dirty. Pulling out the chair really didn't want to sit on it. The chairs need recovering or throwing away. Staff didn't know anything about the menu and had to keep asking the cook. The toilets are awful. Really need a make over.
