A friend had recommended it and went on the first Sunday of September. A table for four at 2pm. All only had main courses. Yes there were not that many staff on and it was a bit slow but it was a Sunday roast which is worth waiting for and I will happily wait for food with is good, they're all very friendly and it's a country pub and for £23 two good slices of sirloin and nice vegetables not over cooked. With today's prices of the ingredients and staff I think they are doing a good job and will be back for more

The Peacock used to be my favourite place to go and eat. As it was my birthday i invited members of my family to have a nice lunch there. What a disappointment it was. We had reserved 10 days in advance, we arrived on time, we were still standing when the waitress came to ask us forcefully for an order, we told her that we just wanted to sit down first of all and we will order asap. We ordered the drinks and then the food….we waited waited waited and finally one hour later the food finally arrived. I had asked for a menu from the slate, special, plaice and whatever vegetables was coming with. The food was horrid, the plaice very gelatinous and hardly any edible flesh, the boiled potatoes were just about ok and the only other vegetables were mega crunchy beans (almost raw), nothing else. I called the waitress and complained but she said that she would tell the chef…nothing was done about it…not a replacement meal offered….we did not receive an apology or an explanation, nothing ….i paid for this miserable lunch, and left hungry and very upset, it was my birthday….. The problems were that it was a Sunday, very busy, totally untrained stressed out young waitresses just there to serve the food they have no knowledge about and take the money….. I had expected the chef to offer me something else to eat or not to charge me for the full amount of a plate of food totally unacceptable. Would I want to recommend this place? No. What a disappointment.

I came for lunch today to celebrate my friends birthday and was very disappointed. My husband and I have been coming to the Peacock for many years so it was natural for me to book a table for my friends birthday lunch, we were given the menu which was very limited but ordered the fish pie which was not as tasty as usual and had very little fish in it. The table next to us had pies so we thought there must have been a page missing from the menu. Our plates were cleared and we were offered the dessert menu, after about 30 minutes I had to go to the bar and fetch the menu myself, it was at this time I noticed the special menu board. After another long wait we ordered 2 banoffee pies, again very disappointed all biscuit base and cream very little caramel and banana in the middle. We were then not even offered tea or coffee. This was a very embarrassing and not a treat for my friends birthday.

Pretty disappointed to be honest. Lovely pub in a very pretty setting but one of the worst poured Guinness's I have had in my life. Had to take it back to be topped up but ended up tasting better than it looked. No soft drinks on the gun so ended up paying a premium for what was in fact a bottle of Tesco diet lemonade (I watched the bar person open and pour it in front of me). On the plus side the food smelt and looked amazing and plenty of room outside the front of the pub to enjoy the sun.

Had a very enjoyable meal at The Peacock Inn tonight, which really made up for our disaster dinner somewhere else last night. The pub has many things in its favour, the food was good and some thought had gone into the menu. The building was everything you would wish for, oak beams, Tudor frontage, pleasant gardens, picturesque and charming. Sadly, the staff at front of house with the exception of a young girl gave the impression they really would have preferred being elsewhere and forgot the important role they play to complete the guests experience. It is always wise to remember what you would expect from staff if you or your family were spending your hard earnt money somewhere else. Whatever differences there may be with colleagues ,home demands or working inconvenient shifts, the customer should be welcomed and valued and not seen as an inconvenience. I hope this review is helpful as the grand old pub deserves better.

6 of my family visited the peacock for lunch today to celebrate 2 birthdays I found the experience leaving a nasty taste in my mouth as firstly the staff were extremely surly which seemed to affect the whole atmosphere and ambiance, the menu I thought seemed basic but to be fair turned up pretty much all together and hot. Also the drinks that I ordered didn’t come in there brand glasses, as most people know for instance lager needs to be served in a lager glass because it has a widget that keeps the beer lively, gin needs to be in a large bowl glass it looks so much better , my Harvey’s best bitter needed more conditioning and was served in a Guinness glass

This was a return visit and we enjoyed it as much, if not more, than our first visit together last year. We went on a Thursday evening and it wasn’t particularly busy but the ambiance was good and the food was excellent. We all chose the fish pie which came with a breadcrumb crust and skinny chips, though we were able to change the chips for green vegetables or chunky chips. The food was piping hot and absolutely delicious. There was a good choice of desserts which 3 of us enjoyed very much! The Tia Maria coffee was declared the best yet in a pub setting. There is a lovely garden to the rear which would be great to sit in on sunny summer’s evening (or lunchtime). The staff were lovely - helpful and polite, and all in all we enjoyed a lovely night out.

What a difference a year makes. Last year the atmosphere was buzzing, the staff super friendly and the customers happy. Today was the complete opposite. Staff attitude sucked. Staff having a clear relationship crisis for customers to hear. Good pub food cooked to a good to very good standard. Sometimes when the team are flat out though, waits can become long and mistakes are made but definitely not more than anywhere else. A nice lunch, Service was good, food was good, atmosphere was a shame. As above, honestly my food was really well done, and the service was friendly. My quibbles really come from the too much choice of food from the menus, as there are two. I was a tadge overwhelmed by this and some things that I think were missing, A good like steak. This definitely influences my score, but as said my main was nice, my starters were ok, but the poppadoms were a bit soft, not stale, but left me wondering how freshly made they were. Service was great, attentive, polite and friendly and patient when I had to ask twice to come back for my order while I tried to find something from all the choices. The atmosphere here really let the place drop, even when I arrive, the lighting above and inside the main doors were off, and the place honestly looked closed from the outside, I neared turned back and went to a local pub on the other side of the road. Having gone inside I could see 3 other people had also made it in. But the place felt cold and empty, such as large unfilled space at midday was very unusual and this was the same feeling throughput the whole meal. Not sure what could be done here, but it was an unusual experience for sure. Overall, good food, good service, but I would most likely look for somewhere with a bit more of a feel and life to it with a simpler menu, but I wouldn't pass it by completely either.

Used to go here regularly for lunch whilst working at Falmer campus. Five years on we revisited the Swan to see if much had changed. It hasn’t really, which is a shame, but we did kind of expect it. I would love loved to see a more progressive menu of traditional pub classics. Steak chunks in the pie, not minced. Calamari Rings isn’t a main in my food book, sorry. However, the food was hot, simple but tasty and came out quickly. Friendly staff as always.

The Michelin Guide clarifies that service quality does not influence the awarding of a Michelin Star: “It’s entirely up to the restaurant to decide what style of service it wants to offer – and that has no bearing on a Michelin Star.” In Lewes, Dill restaurant exemplifies this distinction. The food is fine, although it doesn’t meet my expectations for Michelin-guide quality. The £200 bill for the table (excluding dessert, for reasons to become clear) doesn’t represent good value for money, in my opinion. However, taste and value are subjective. What is indisputable is the combination of a two-hour dining limit, slow service that consumes this entire period—leaving no time for dessert or after-dinner drinks—and the abrupt manner in which staff enforce this policy. Without prior warning, a staff member informed us, bluntly and curtly, that our time was up and we needed to pay and leave immediately. No desert for you, guys, by order of management. Despite our repeated requests, the manager never came to discuss and perhaps resolve what became a very unpleasant situation for us. Setting a time limit is acceptable if communicated in advance and aligned with the kitchen’s ability to serve promptly. When the first course arrives close to an hour after seating and the main course close enough to the two-hour mark, this is unacceptable. Having a staff member rudely dismiss guests whose time has expired, while the manager avoids addressing the situation, is worse. And so, if you’re inclined to dine at a restaurant with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, spend £200 for the table on reasonable but not great food without being allowed to order dessert or coffee, and enjoy being unceremoniously thrown out when your time is up by a rude staff member backed by an elusive manager who failed to deliver food on time—then Dill is indeed the place for you.
20 Opinions
This restaurant is pretentious! Over priced lack lust food. When paying we asked to remove the service charge due to freedom of choice and we were happy to tip in cash, however the manager challenged this in a confrontational way even though we explained that money is tight for us at the moment! She then did not remove the charge and made us feel so uncomfortable we just payed it! This is not cool and gave off a very hostile vibe. The food was totally overpriced and miniature so if you want to have an enjoyable and affordable pleasant dining experience don’t go here!
