Recently arrived in the area, looking for a new Indian restaurant to call "Home" for the foreseeable future. Nice Inside, pleasant waiting staff, average food (travel extensively throughout India every year, we know our Bhaji's from our Bhuna's!!). Had 2 Cobra beers (Draught NOT bottled, purchase price from wholesalers equivalent to £1.59 a Pint) We were charged £8.00 a pint, so 2 beers alone cost us £32!!!!!!!!. I understand you want to make a profit of course, but by ripping potential long standing customers off will certainly hit your pocket in the long run. I for one, will certainly NOT be returning, and believe me....you have lost a lot of trade, I will give mine to one of the other restaurants nearby.

Terrible rude brusque waiter and outrageously priced drinks and stale poppadoms. I will not return. I believe they made the drink prices up as they went along. Service was so bad it was almost comedic

Don't know Hertford and staying for a night by myself so looked at TA reviews and chose the Raj. Got to say, really disappointed. First customer in and quite friendly reception, was offered one choice of beer. Only a bit later did I find a party of 4 being offered a choice of beer. Food was hot and arrived in good time but very very average, chicken tough and obviously reheated etc. Only plus was a freshly cooked nan which was good. Anyway, no big deal until the bill arrived. One guy with 2 poppadoms, rice, nan, main course and 2 beers.... £42+ Have never paid that much by a mile for a one person curry. Cobra £7.95 a bottle! Maybe that's the new normal but £40+ for a curry for one,, that doesn't seem right for the food on offer.

A warm welcome was received at The Raj and, as usual, the food was delicious. I went with my two daughters for our annual Father’s Day get together and, we all agreed this is by far the best Indian food in Hertford. We’ve tried every Indian restaurant in the town over the years but none get anywhere near the quality of the food in this restaurant.

We moved to Hertford 20 years ago and used The Raj regularly. Over the years we've been spoilt with having home deliveries, and as The Raj don't offer this service, we gradually stopped using them. Tonight, we walked (yes, that's how close they are to us) and have rekindled our love affair with this restaurant and their food. Definitely the best Indian restaurant in the area, and we promise, we will not be so neglectful again.

Beware when booking the Raj, we phoned 24hrs ahead but when we arrived the following evening no record had been made of it and we were told they couldn't accommodate another table of 7 adults, and that was it, barely an apology, no gesture of goodwill, we were just turned away, which after 20 yrs of patronage I thought was very poor. Food may be good but I won't be risking another visit.

We ate at The Raj this evening and whilst the food was excellent, the service was far too rushed. As soon as we put down anything it was whisked away, the table was cleared within seconds of us finishing our main course and we were given the bill, which we had not even asked for and our coats brought to the table. Our reservation was at 20:00 and we were given the bill at 21:10. We were not offered dessert or coffee just given the bill and our coats. Not a pleasant experience for a Saturday night.

The Raj is a local Indian restaurant in Hertford that we frequently patronise. Last night, on the off-chance, my husband & I fancied an Indian meal so went along to The Raj in Hertford. We were warmly welcomed as we frequently come here for meals. We were shown to a pleasant table with fresh flowers on it, like the rest of the tables. Within seconds, a waiter came up to ask our order for drinks. We had a jug of 'tap' water as we find that other drinks don't quench our thirst. Our waiter brought us a jug of ice cold water which was welcome. He also brought us 2 glasses with ice & a slice of lime. We then proceeded to order our meal - 2 Plain Poppadoms with their usual dips (4) which were all very tasty. We then had an Onion Bhaji each plus salad which were very filling & very tasty. Our main course was Subzi Dhansak, a Vegetarian Curry with lentils & mixed vegetables added to it. We ordered additionally, Bombay Aloo, some delicious, spiced potatoes, Pilau Rice & a Naan which was cooked in their Tandoori Oven. For dessert we ordered Kulfi, an Induan ice cream which was both creamy & yummy. There were 2 flavour choices, Pistachio or Mango. On this occasion, we had the Mango flavoured ice cream which nicely cooled our mouths down. We were then offered quarters of Orange to refresh our palates & hot towels to clean our hands & mouths. We then asked for the Bill which, as always, was very reasonable. With the Bill came 2 liqueur glasses with a Coffee Liqueur & cream on the top - really yummy. With the Bill came 2 Chocolate Orange chocolates too. The waiters chatted & made pleasantries each time they passed our table making us feel "at home". The Raj is definitely the Best Indian restaurant in Hertford with a wide range of dishes to choose between. It is pleasantly furnished with adequate lighting & air-con when necessary. The atmoshere is pleasant & friendly which is why we like it & recommend it so much. We have been coming here for over 16 years & haven't come across an Indian restaurant that we like more. We also have never had a bad meal yet!!! We would highly recommend a visit to The Raj, we are sure you won't be disappointed. Ann & David Geller Hertford residents.

This is a small 'Indian' restaurant, probably seats around 40 people and also does a good take-away service. The staff are well trained and friendly without overdoing it. White table linen and plain decor. Food is very, very good. Prawn dishes are probably the best around and their side dishes are tasty and varied. Nice touches such as oranges, fabric hand wipes, chocs when bill arrives and a liqueur before departure. Excellent for couples, families, small friendly groups. We had been once to try this restaurant with friends who live locally, from the outside it looks like any other little local curry house but inside it is comfortable, bright, modern and has AC (quite useful in the recent hot temperatures). The first time was excellent the meal was served with care and quickly although everything was freshly prepared. We decided to try it once more with some other friends and I was a little nervous because one of our party doesn't do spicy. There was no need to worry we all found something that suited out palate and had an excellent meal again served well. The waiters are friendly and responsive, the food is tasty and fresh and altogether we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Recommend

This was our first visit to this restaurant. The service was excellent. I only eat Chicken tikka as i am unable to eat spicy food which is a real shame. The tikka was lovely i would give them an 8 out of 10. The yogurt dip was too runny. I'd give that 4 out of ten. My husband ordered a lamb dish, the flavours were lovely, but the lamb was chewy, unedible. There is no excuse for an Indian restaurant to serve the lamb like this. I do hope the owners read this review and change the way they cook the lamb. We were with friends that eat in there regularly so we didnt like to complain, normally we would have returned the dish. I would eat there again, not sure i could persuade my husband.

I have been going to the Raj Tandoori for years, it's staggering where it sits in Trip Advisor ratings for Hertford Indian food. It should be First, Second and Third. The decor and lack of space mean it isn't perhaps the most alluring but food wise, there is no competition. The tandoori dishes are amazing; the Chicken Shashlik is a personal highlight. The vegetarian dishes are of a high standard (the Multi Veg Balti is gorgeous) and they have any number of specialty dishes that are cooked right in front of you. The Lamb Dhansak, again, just so tasty. I could go on but won't, for fear of reaching for the take away menu. Again. In music terms, if Ginger was the Rolling Stones, then The Raj is the Beatles. And Shahenshah... well, Milli Vanilli.

Out for supper with friends we opted for The Raj as we hadn't been for a while. A table for three at 8.45 no problem. The pappadums and the bottled Cobra were good. My friends enjoyed their sheesh kebab and king prawn puri. For my main course I ordered the chicken tikka balti ultra hot with a chilli naan, garlic rice, saag and gobi bhajis. My curry was one of the worst I have had, the heat which I enjoy had been simply added in by chilli powder. There was no depth, no layers and no spicing to the dish which made it pretty unpleasant. The side dishes and rice were fairly insipid but then naan was good. This is a better kitchen that this and it was very disappointing to see the complete lack of effort on my main. We shall not be returning for a while.

The place had quite a few people there waiting to collect take-aways, all of whom were looking quite fed up. We waited for an hour and a quarter for our starters, then another 50 minutes for our main course. When the food did arrive, there were several mistakes with the orders. The food was reasonable, but not good enough to merit a wait of that magnitude. The waiters were polite and friendly, but had that 'haunted' look that people have when things are out of control. I feel that the manager/owner of the restaurant was responsible for the chaos. Not a good experience, I definitely don't recommend it!

To be fair everyone likes their own curry house best and everyone can get a duff curry or have to wait longer than usual at any restaurant - it has happened to me at the Raj but less often than bigger places in Hertford. Four of us visited The Raj late evening in January and had a gorgeous meal. Tasty and good value. Try the panir dishes - not plates of yellow tasteless slush like the Shahensha. Really tasty tikka - sizzling and fresh. Sometimes you have to wait and sometimes it's annoying with people collecting take aways but the staff have always been lovely and friendly.

My friends and I went here for a catch up , small restaurant, friendly, and shown to a table quickly. Drinks were slow, but once we order food , the wait was not long . We ordered a few dishes to try , all were very nice and good flavours , the chicken in the dishes was very nice and the bread was fabulous. It was not to busy , very clean , and I would go back .

Pre valentine's dinner. Very good selection of dishes. Some i have not seen before. Service let down by amount of takeaways coming in. Old chap with beard, papa surf very friendly don't know what happened to the other reviewers but he was very good with us. Quality of food OK meat a little dry, already a very popular place for takeaways but could be so much better. I found it to be good value, two bottles of wine and more food we could eat for less Ghana 90 nicker. Not sure I will be back though.

We had booked 2 weeks ago for a party of 16 for a friend's birthday. We had to wait 3/4 hr before anyone offered to take our drinks order. We asked to sample the wine before purchase which we thought was a fair request but were rudely told that wasn't possible as the bottle hadn't been opened and we would need to purchase the whole bottle once opened. There seemed to be a lack of customer service on this date 13/02/2016 which based on previous experience was a surprise. We then decided to leave after the attitude of the member of staff and took our custom (all £450 of it) to another curry house in Hertford where they actually appreciated/acknowledged our custom. (The Shahenshah managed to rejig their full restaurant to accommodate us at the last minute but meant we couldn't eat until 10.15.) On our way out of the Raj we were spoken to by a few other customers who said they had been waiting a long time too and were disappointed on that particular occasion and they had also complained. As mentioned this isn't the normal service however the staff should be more mindful of their attitude as it's put us off going back. My friend luckily still managed to enjoy her birthday but this could have ruined it.

New to the area live just a few doors down, called to order a take away for myself and some friends, I received a load of abuse and I was told they don't deliver and I was then hung up on! Needless to say won't be going back, they have lost new regular custom and I have now gone to the Ruby which incidentally is delicious food and a FRIENDLY amiable service.

Some say this place is a bit expensive, but the food more than makes up for that and actually I don't agree. The meals I have had here have always been excellent, tasty generous portions and served efficiently. I could recommend all the dishes I've had here, but that would take too long suffice to say that I think this is one of the best around. My only difficulty is getting them to answer the phone when I want to book a table! Yes they are busy and there are always take-aways going out the door, but that must mean that the food is worth it - and yes I really think it is.

Got a takeaway here on Sunday night and was really disappointed. Quality of the food was OK but massively over priced. My fiance had tandoori prawns for main, when we got it home his main was actually just 6 prawns....the dish cost 14.95??? We also ordered samosas which were disappointed to find that on opening there were only 2 for 3.50? I had a veg byriani which was not overly flavoursome.Overall we were very disappointed. ...I'm more than happy to spend a bit more on a takeaway so long as the quality is there and the value is visible, unfortunately this is not what we go...I wouldn't eat there again.

Reading the reviews the problem is staffing and service. We walked in (5 of us) at 6:30pm and were lucky to get a table. We hadn't reserved and the next group to turn up were given an hour to eat. It's true the takeaway service is full on and did not stop the whole time we were there. That would have annoyed us, but we were so early for dinner and there was only one other table in the restaurant occupied. With that in mind, the service was good. The food? Great. Possibly the best naan bread I have tasted ever. The other dishes all good (not very good, but good). Would come again, but clearly need to book and come early to avoid takeaways.

I will concede that you have to be selective at the Raj IF you fancy a curry.IF however you are a big meat eater then you will be pleasantly surprised. The meat (as in Tikka Chicken/Lamb) is seemingly cooked on hot coals and is genuinely some of the best meat/chicken that I have had. Always really tasty, always succulent.Breads a lovely as are the sides. The CTM which is normally my barometer for Indian restaurants isn't great, however most of the things they do more than makes up for it. Always had great service. Not the cheapest, but the portions are very good.

Great food and very friendly staff...I'm a picky vegetarian and so it's great to have found somewhere were people go out of their way to make a perfect veggie meal. I love their Paneer dishes. Book first to avoid waiting to be seated. As some nights, especially Friday's and Saturdays it can get busy.

We used to eat at The Raj all the time, mostly takeaways, and had started to notice the service was deteriorating (waiting 10-15 minutes after agreed time before takeaway was ready).Last night we went in for a sit-down meal with some friends that had to come down to visit us (and told them about this great local Indian restaurant), and had to leave embarrassed and very disappointed. First of all we arrived and had nowhere to sit (even though we'd booked), many tables seemed to be filled with people waiting for takeaways). Once we were seated it took ages to take our drinks order, and 40 minutes later the popadums hadn't even arrived (let alone order the starter and mains). The most frustrating part of it all is that takeaway customer after takeaway customer was coming in and taking away their food, sit-down guests seemed to be of the lowest priority. We had no choice but to get up and walk out and find somewhere else to eat.Unbelievable and very sad as this place used to be very good, whoever owns/manages The Raj has decided to run it with the fewest possible people working and it is having a terrible impact on the service, we will never go back.

Four of us went for dinner last night and ended up walking out! We had booked a table for 8pm. We waited at the door for five minutes before being seated, were brought drinks after 10 minutes and asked if we wanted poppadoms... Which we did. Forty minutes later we were still sat at our table having finished our drinks with NO poppadoms and we hadn't even ordered our meals. We couldn't even grab a waiter as there were just two men at the bar furiously taking payment for takeaways and no one else. Only about three tables were seated for dinner-the rest were full but waiting for take outs. They were prioritising these people over people sitting for dinner. The table next to us had been trying to get a drink for 20 minutes! We decided to pay for our drinks and leave. They apologised but still took payment for the drinks which I think should have been on the house. The owner is clearly trying to save money by not employing enough staff but it will lose him customers. We went to Dills instead which was fantastic. We won't return to the Raj...Dills is where we will eat from now on!

We had a Raj menu delivered through our door and decided to have a take away.Staff were friendly at food pick up and it was easy with free parking close by.We had a chicken and a lamb dish - both were really tasty. The rice was beautifully cooked and the garlic naan full of flavour. They throw in a free bottle of wine if your order is more than £35.The restaurant has the highest hygiene rating - 5 stars. Will definitely be back for a sit down meal soon.

We had not been to the RAJ for a couple of years and was not expecting too much. The restaurant itself is quite small and cosy, service was excellent. As others have commented service was slow but I took this to mean we were not being served from the ubiquitous curry sauce pot !! but rather our order was being actually cooked. The menu was new and we ordered some specials which were superb with subtle spicing. We will not wait another 2 years !!!!!!

I have eaten in so many curry restaurants and the Raj is by far the best. The food is lovely and not too expensive, much better than a couple of others in Hertford. You also get a lot more for your money - the portion sizes are good! The staff are lovely and myself, my family and my boyfriend have been going there for years and they are always super kind. The one thing that let’s them down is the service can be slow sometimes when the restaurant is full, but it is worth the wait! It may not look all that appealing from the outside, but if you have never been, I suggest you go!

We have been to The Raj four times now and have thoroughly enjoyed it every time. From the outside it doesn’t look the best but the food is delicious. The onion bhajis for starters are huge, in fact we would recommend sharing all starters between two. The biryani comes with a novelty web of egg over the top (it peels off in one go if you don’t like it!) and their hot dishes are very hot!The pints of Cobra are nice and the Sunday buffet – approx. £9 a head - is of a very high standard. The music is more relaxed and the metal buffet trays are kept hot, clean and fully stocked by the waiters. My only complaint is that it doesn’t come with poppadums! It’s little more expensive than the other curry houses local to the area, but it’s a great place to go for a romantic date.

My first visit to the Raj with family and friends. Poppadums were fresh and crisp. The main courses when the eventually arrived (after around 45-50 mins) were all very good. The owner apologised to us as we left for the slow service.Main course and poppadums plus drinks for 4 came to just shy of £80.Will go back because the food was very good

Very disappointed with our visit ok Friday, some staff were very rude and couldn’t even smile or give eye contact. Waiter threw my cutlery down on the table and ignored my husband when he asked for a drink. Starters were good but the main biryani wasn’t flavourless. They only bought 1 side curry instead of 3. Portions were a good size though.
