Tandoori Cottage in East Hertfordshire

Collected takeaway order for family 30 mins after ordering tonight. Tasted delicious: chicken tikka main, dhansak & bhuna with rices and veg side dishes. Meals thankfully not overloaded with ghee or salt, unlike others I’ve tried. Nicely presented with fresh herbs on top. I’ve been to TC almost 30 yrs & continued visiting now moved to Triad/Southmill area. Staff friendly & remember me each time I visit. Highly recommend you support this local Stortford restaurant

This business/ restaurant has moved from Northgate End in Bishops Stortford. It is now in the Millers business center off Southmill Road Bishops Stortford. I think they could do with a bit of a a boost with people being informed that they have moved rather than closed. Their new premises is pleasant inside. The food was excellent. We had a selection of dishes which were all nicely spiced and very tasty. We enjoyed our meal in an environment where you could enjoy a meal & hold a conversation. Definitely needs a boost back on the map. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy a classic Curry House with good food & friendly staff. Will definitely be paying several return visits.

Just had a fantastic buffet meal to end the weekend at Tandoori Cottage - Bishops Stortford. Food was superb and great value for money. Really think this place is underestimated

Popped into Tandoori cottage for a curry with my wife and wished he had gone elsewhere. Two waiters appeared to be on service duty but spent most of their time hiding in the kitchen rather than tending to customers. Proved difficult gaining their attention to place food and drinks orders - and when we eventually ordered our main meals, we had to wait over an hour and a half for these to arrive. I ordered the murgi ragasthani from the specials section which was described as a medium hot breast of chicken off the bone garnished with oriental herbs, ginger, garlic and chillies. It actually had very little heat (spice) and the only garnish I could taste was the salt that completely overpowered everything else. There was no apology or acceptance of the poor service when we asked for the bill - and even that was a saga as the waiter took multiple attempts to take the card payment. As we left there was a table of 8 people next to us who were complaining about not receiving their meals despite having placed their orders over 90 mins earlier. Hard to see us returning to TC in light of tonight’s experience.

Been using this restaurant for well over 10 years for eat-in and takeaways- it’s always been excellent. Took my parents as they always look forward to going here when they visit. What a disappointment, the waiter an older gentleman was really grumpy as though he really didn’t want to be looking after us and we were the only people in the restaurant for the first hour as we had decided to eat early. Asked for some lime pickle and he said they didn’t have any, thinking it strange I asked another younger guy who was friendly and he went and got some immediately. The food wasn’t great and we all left disappointed with our visit. I think possibly the restaurant has changed hands as it use to be so friendly. Unfortunately the service from some staff and quality of food was not great-we will not be returning.

Ordered on line for delivery. Had amazing meal in the restaurant end of last year was fantastic. So decided to try delivery service. Was told an hour but that was fine was prepared to wait. Had. Call from driver after about an hour. He didn’t have a clue where we was. They had our post code but he couldn’t find us. We have never ever had a problem people finding us before he explained to me where he was so I had to guide him to us which was a struggle he didn’t know the area food was warm nann bread cold. Very Disappointed wouldn’t use them again.

Very disappointing - delivery took over hours. Rang numerous times and kept being told it would take another 15 minutes. Got to 21:30 at this point being to late to eat I asked to cancel order and have a refund. They wouldn't refund as delivery had just left. Delivery driver finally arrived 21:40 asking for payment (which had already been paid for online). No apology for the delay either. Food was cold went straight in the bin. Ruined evening - never again.

Pre booked dinner this afternoon for delivery at 7.40. at 8 we called to find out when it would be delivered, told driver on his way, turned up 8.30. we had to chase & obviously nearly an hour late. Not good, if there was an issue would have been nice if we had been told without the need to chase.

Ordered at 7pm, food arrived at 8.50pm. It wasn’t a big order. Need I say more? When the food turned up, it was good but seriously nearly 2 hours? This restaurant needs to sort itself out. I phoned at 8pm and they said one minute sir. What a joke.

Delicious dishes at a fairly good price, along with a neat and fancy environment. The service was nice and professional, we felt really well treated and satisfied, definitely will be back.

Really disappointed that Abdul has left tandoori cottage. He has really grown the business and improved the quality of the food. Already seems to be going back to its old ways. I hope we find out where he is next going as that is where we will be!

whilst my Lamb Tikka Main and my Son's Chicken Tikka Masala was lovely, my Husband's King Prawn Curry was lacking King Prawns he has had this curry many times and has never complained before, upon dishing up i noted there was a lot of sauce my husband upon eating it said "where are the prawns, this is mostly curry sauce" very disappointed as this is quite an expensive curry compared to chicken etc.

Best Indian food in Stortford Obviously during COVID-19 only takeaways are available. We have just had the most amazing dinner delivered. Easy to order, Abdul called when he said he would to take the order, it was delivered when it should have been - on time. Piping hot and absolutely delicious. Cannot recommend them highly enough.

After an hour and a half our food hadn't arrived, we called, it came after 2 and a half hours without two of the dishes. Called again and was told it would arrive soon. It's been 5 and a half hours now and it's not arrived.

My experience at Tandoori cottage was amazing. The staff looked after our table, and catered exactly to our needs. They worked diligently in getting our food out quickly. I have to say the atmosphere was fantastic, exactly what you want when you go to a traditional curry house; Good food, music and service. 100% recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area, who is looking for a good night out.

We had a family meal here last week, food was out of this world. Even our 8 year old daughter said it was the best curry she had ever had, never seen her eat so much. Staff were lovely too, we will definitely be back.

My wife and I have been eating curry's for the past 20 odd years. Being in Bishops Stortford and surrounding areas we have experienced all the Indian restaurants have to offer but keep coming back to the Cottage. The service and the food has improved dramatically under Abdul's team and will bend over backwards to accommodate anyone. Keep it going mate, you and the boys work hard for it. King Cobra is a must try!

My husband and I have been visiting this restaurant for the past 11 years and it never fails to deliver in superb fresh fragrant quality and amazing flavours and taste. This is the only Indian restaurant that we go to and the only one we will ever go to. Abdul is absolutely amazing and very helpful and friendly. The Tandoori Cottage is somewhere we like to bring a small family during the week. The food tastes delicious and even if you aren’t sure what you want, they are able devise some tasty dishes based on your preferences. Don’t like it too hot, don’t worry, they’ll cater for you. Like it a bit hotter than normal, they’ll cater for that too.

Always the best place to take friends, family and business clients! Consistently great food, great service and wonderful, warm staff. Abdul and his team can't do enough to make your dining experience cheerful, enjoyable and thoroughly satisfying! A real treasure and highly recommended!

The main reason we visit Tandoori Cottage is because the food is authentic and flavoursome. We always find the portions to be just right, my husband has a healthy appetite but is never left wanting more. The service is attentive without being intrusive. The waiters are very polite, always asking if you’d like more drinks and efficiently taking away the plates when they are empty and the glasses too. My husband has been a patron for over 20 years on/off and seen the changes this restaurant has gone through. Recently, the decor has been updated and is fresher and more inviting and the food is probably the best it’s ever been.

Consistently one of the best curries! This place is a little gem. We went this evening with my mum. The service is always excellent and Abdul always makes an effort but also some of the newer staff are learning his ways and are a credit to him. The food is traditional and they are always willing to adapt to taste. A proper curry house!

Restaurant was freezing no apologies they deliberately had the heating turned off. One of the waiters stood at the side and farted twice very loudly. I commented the second time he did this and he rolled his eyes at me. The restaurant was not clean and neither were the napkins. The restaurant was so cold even the warm plates arrived cold. Food was alright but the wine was not served cold and neither was the beer. If you want a decent curry In bishops Stortford go elsewhere. I personally recommend Shadona or Zara.

Indian resturants always seem to have to cater for large parties, which is no problem here. We've been back a few times and the staff are always friendly, we get great food quicky and great value for money.

Me and my partner came for dinner with her mum. The food was absolutely top drawer and the service was even better. A must visit if you like your traditional curry and service

Visited with friends from America. We met in Bishop’s Stortford where they lived before moving to the States.

Absolutely awful service. Our samosas were just a jump of dough, when we complained, they said these things happen. Like they shouldn't check it before serving it. Would never use again

We have visited this Restaurant many many times and never found the food anything but excellent. Recently, the Restaurant has been taken over by Abdul, the nephew of the owner Abi(who we know very well). The standards of the Restaurant have been maintained, but if anything Abdul is trying just a little bit harder with his nice touches and extra customer service to try to win new custom. The food is always fresh, tasty and innovative, and they are always happy to cook something to your particular taste. The Sunday Buffet is especially great value as you can eat as much as you like. We travel a 34 mile round trip to visit this Restaurant most weeks and have never been disappointed, so that tells you we can't get the same standard of food in Epping where we live. This really is one of those truly wonderful authentic Restaurants where nothing is too much trouble and our Family and friends all love it!

We love this restaurant - we probably visit at least twice a month and have never been disappointed. The staff are great and very friendly - it has always been good but am happy to say it is just as excellent with Abdul in charge. We will continue visiting.

I eat curry at least once a week and have been to dozens of restaurants in the region over recent years but the Tandoori Cottage continues to excel and is my favourite all round curry house.

Have lived in Bishop’s Stortford for over 20 years and tried every curry house but only one in my opinion delivers consistently high quality and authentic Indian dishes. The founder has recently handed over the day-to-day running to his nephew Abdul who always gives a very warm welcome and is very attentive to his customers. I go there at least once a week and would highly recommend visiting him and his team for a great dining experience!

what a fantastic little find on our trip over from Ireland. the food was amazing! so fresh and full of flavour. The service was great too very personal. I wish this was my local Indian.

Used to be regular customers at this restaurant but after a not so great experience, decided to give it a miss. Called in again after several years lapsed. It was busy and maybe we simply made the wrong choices from the menu, but it really didn’t rock my boat. The food was ok but...... I dunno, just ok.

I'm on business in the area, food in my hotel was overpriced and poor so went out to look for somewhere decent and found this gem. I was only after a takeaway, it was obvious the place was about to close but the friendly gent I spoke to was happy to get the kitchen to stay open, found my favourite dish even though it wasn't named on the menu. I didn't have to wait long, had a nice chat with the manager who took my order...some people at the end of the day can't be bothered with customers...but not in this case, really great service. Quality of the food was excellent, and I travel a lot so I'm lucky enough to try many different places, generous portions, authentic Indian cuisine, and really reasonably priced. If I'm in the area again, will definitely return. If your live in the area you really should try this place!

..and that’s no bad thing. Popped in for first time on a Friday night, good food, personal service and decor that reminds me of eating out in the 80s and I loved that. Will be going back.

We popped in for a mid week meal and staff were really lovely. Food was excellent value for money we will definitely be back.

The food was acceptable and tasty. The price was good but the service was poor. We were a party of 5 and asked to move half way through our meal from a table of 8 so a large party could be accommodated - in fact we were moved to a table of 6 and replaced by two separate couples - we failed to see why were were asked to move as there were other large tables available in the restaurant. A real shame as poor service has let this place down. We won’t be coming back. Lots of Indians to choose from in town and sadly while the food is good the service is not

I've been eating in and getting takeaway from Tandoori Cottage for in excess of 30 yeas on and off. I always rated it a cut above most other local Indians. But tonight our takeaway meal was very disappointing. Maybe it's changed hands or chef problems. I'll give it one more chance before finding somewhere else to get my food. If the management read this, what's with the half portions of vegetables?

Been coming for decades and it's always reliably good and tasty. Not flash but honest and really enjoyable. Thanks for serving our community and us personally for ages.

Ordered a takeaway from Tandoori Cottage (not for the first time) service good yet again for a delivery always friendly food was up to its normal high standard will use again, and again

I went here with my friend on a Wednesday night and we both really enjoyed our meals. My friend has food allergies and they catered for her with a smile which was great as sometimes restaurants make a real fuss about it. The food was really good- it all tasted very fresh, very spicy and flavoursome and it was piping hot. The vegetables in the dishes were crunchy and the prawns and chicken were both cooked really well, it was all yummy.

I've been dining and getting takeaway from the Tandoori Cottage for many years on and off. The food is always just that bit better than most other Indian restaurants I've eaten in, and I have eaten in a lot of India restaurants! I particularly like the Dansak dishes. Must be 30 years I've been eating here the food is consistently high standard, but I do miss the flock wallpaper from the 80's!

I have been visiting the Tandoori Cottage regularly for the last 20 years and glad to see recently it has been getting busier and busier. They really deserve it as it is a wonderful place. Always very friendly and accommodating staff, reasonable price, understated decor that personally I like and most importantly spot on food. There are plenty of options to choose from with their own individual flavour and care for each dish (personal favourite being the Murgi Rajasthani). Great for everything from couples to large gatherings of friends.

The cottage as most people in town will know it has always provided goo traditional curries. I have been going for over 30 years and yes it has had changes over the years, and yes sometimes the food has not been the same due to changes in chef, but overall it has been the most consistent indian restaurant in the town.

Ordered chicken jalfrezi, pilau rice and naan. Food was hot, tasty and portions were generous. Service was friendly and efficient. I would eat here again.

The food is wonderful - really varied - suits all. Service brilliant and the Sunday buffet is excellent value.

Visited with a friend on Saturday as we've been on numerous occasions and always had a good meal and good service, unfortunately was not the case this time around. Arrived and was taken to our table by a surly looking man. Ordered a Bottle of wine and a Kingfisher beer, only wine turned up and when I asked where beer was sometime later we were told that they didn't have Kingfisher. Finally got a drink 20 minutes later. Food was very nice as usual with this place. When meal was finished we did not get any hot towels as every other table did. We then ordered 2 Irish coffees. After another half an hour wait we asked the waiter where they were. He went away to find out and returned some time later to tell us the coffee machine was broken. We could've been told that when we ordered. After three mistakes during the night and the place now looking generally run down we will not be visiting again.

Not only is this the best Bengali/Indian Restaurant I have found in the South East of England, but they do an amazing Sunday Buffet which is served to you at your table!

Got a takeaway last Saturday and what a let down , been using this restaurant for years never let me down until NOW, poor quality meat very fatty and nearly all the food ordered was very bland, too boot they've put their prices up.

We had booked a table in advance . When we arrived the restaurant was less than half full but no provision had been made to get our table ready . The staff were very unfriendly and appeared to be struggling to deal with the few patrons in the restaurant and take-away orders . Had to ask to have our order taken . It was quite apparent that the management has changed over the past year and are struggling with providing a good service . It would help if the staff smiled .

Did not eat my meal i cancelled it in used tracking for my meal it gave me a time then when the time came no meal so they changed it for another time which it still did not turn so i rang only to ge told it would be another 15 minutes so i would have waited over an hour an a half this was the first i have order from them and it will be the last service was terrible was offered £5 off my meal but no thanks

Me and my mum went there for dinner. We were ignored when we arrived .. baring in mind the place was empty!

Food was lovely but turned up missing my popadoms which i paid for. Called the restaurant who apologised but did not offer a refund or to rectify the situation at the time but just that they would "give something special next time." I just hope they honour this!

The food was delivered on time although half way through while we were waiting 25minutes were added to the delivery time. This was annoying because we were hungry. Wouldn't have ordered from anyone else though because the food from here is fantastic. Really tasty, very fresh and not oily. The staff all seem nice too.

I ordered my food at about 5 past 7 and was told it would take an hour to arrive. At half past 7 the delivery driver was pulling up to my house with hot, yummy food. Really impressed with the service and food was decent, the saag paneer was so tasty! 9/10, would definitely order again!

The online service was easy to use, the delivery was on time and the service was fantastic. The food was phenomenal. Every mouthful was tasty and full of spices. We were very impressed with the food, clearly handmade and very well done.

Best indian food I've had for a while.

I visited Tandoori Cottage before playing a show in Bishop's Stortford, mainly to get a cheap meal with the Gourmet Society card. They advertise that the deal there is "buy one get one free", when what they actually mean is "buy x get one free". There were three of us, so that became a little bit of a misunderstanding quite quickly as the waiters all said contradictory things when asked.Nonetheless, we settled on a food order fairly quickly and placed it. The food came after about an average wait: the chicken korma was good, though contained not very much meat for quite a lot of sauce. The vegetable karahi (korai here) was good though, as was the lamb variant.The main problem was the rice portions, which were incredibly small; we did not nearly have enough and the cost was quite high so we were apprehensive about ordering more. Overall, the bill was not high, but it seems they skimp on the size to make it so, which was disappointing.

I have been here a few times in the past and had lovely food with great service but last night me and my sister really fancied an Indian. I live in a small village about 25 mins from this restaurant. I tried ordering more local to me and not one indian takeaway delivered to my location even though it's only 10 mins away! On the off chance we thought we'd see if tandoori cottage delivered and they do!! Not only this but the service the food and the person taking the order were all brilliant! So tasty and a fraction of the cost compared to the other restaurants who don't deliver! You have 2 extremely satisfied customers cannot wait to order from you again !!

Food was unfortunately really really cold, and it's not always nice when you have to reheat it in the microwave. Asides from being cold the food was tasty.

The food I ordered was 40 minutes late, I called when it was 25 or 30 minutes late and they said it will be there any second now then hung up before I got the chance to say anything else, 10 minutes later the guy turned up, I got no apology for it being so late, and when I called to complain they hung up on me once I said how late it was and wouldn't talk to me again. The food itself was getting pretty cold, I managed to eat some for it before it was too cold but barely got though half. Never again will I order from this place! Poor delivery service, terrible customer service and cold food!!

By far the best curry in Bishops Stortford , no flashy decor , just traditional restaurant but the food and service is superb .

I've ordered here many times, for the first time ever they were really quite late delivering. BUT, it was peak time on a Saturday and when the food arrived it was so delicious and well worth the wait! All is forgiven!

I ordered the special offer banquet which was advertised as a 5 course banquet. What was delivered was 1 curry, 1 rice and Bombay potatoes - certainly not 5 courses!
