The Raj Garden in Hertsmere

Awful service, average food. Booked a table online, no knowledge of booking. Managed to get a seat, but took 1hr just for starters to arrive. Starters were wrong (only half the portions actually bought out), was told it would be 10 minutes for some additional ones, waited another 30 mins for cold incorrect order again so we ended up refusing them and skipping straight to main course. When we complain staff were rude, and continued to make snarky remarks through the rest of the service. Mains were served after 1hr45 minutes and were OK, but not matching the expectations of rave reviews or awards. Had to ask for basics like cutlery and some of the mains food was missing and incorrect which we also had to chase. Staff tried to charge us for incorrect starters, we're not apologetic and full of excuses (apparently they are short staffed, the online booking system over books, they are too busy, and they take too many takeaway orders). They even acknowledged themselves that they deal with a lot of complaints. Every other table around was complaining about missing food, incorrect bills or slow service. Even as we left the staff were rude. The atmosphere was chaotic, I appreciate they were busy but staff were constantly shouting at eachother, running back and forth confused and repeating questions/having to check elsewhere. I wouldn't waste time visiting again

Great food which was reasonably priced. Lovely attentive staff in a relaxed atmosphere. They got the balance right between being aware of when you may need a drink or dishes cleared from table without hovering around which can make you feel uncomfortable.

Booked a table for 8pm New year's eve for dinner when we arrived the restaurant was in chaos. We stood In The doorway for 45 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us people where complaining that they had been waiting over an hour to be seated Eventually we where seated we waited nearly an hour for our drinks after asking 4 times for our order nobody seemed to be leading the team and it was totally unorganized. We waited over and hour and a half for our food order which when served the rice was cold . The evening was ruined by the restaurants greed to to get as many customers in and no consideration was taken into account for the lack of customer service. We won't be returning as it was a disastrous evening and no apology from the staff or management for the evenings horrendous experience.

Same as everyone elses experience here for New years eve. What happened understaffed? Illness? Occassion got too much? My guess is,pure greed ! Cram em in and dont worry was likely the instruction from boss man. Hours waiting. People leaving. Sharing tables with strangers. No food. What a joke. Way to lose the locals respect in one night because we Sure didn't get any.

Really disappointed, think there are lessons to be learned. Went on New Years Eve and appreciate this is one of the busiest nights of the year, but the way it was handled was shambolic. Turned up at around half 6 and stood waiting for half an hour to be seated. This is because the people ordering takeaways were being seen to first and we kept getting pushed further back. Finally got seated and it just went downhill from there. Took forever to have our order taken, then waited 3 hours to get our food, clearly the takeaways were being prioritised over the seated guests. People started to give up and leave. Although the waiters were polite to us personally, I overheard them being quite rude to some other customers who were kicking off (rightly so) and what was quite infuriating is everyone just kept getting told to be patient and the kitchen is busy when clearly the takeaways were being prioritised, it was rather patronising as if almost the wool was trying to pulled over our eyes. As I say, I think the restaurant should learn from this, because we have been before (albeit around a year ago) and had a lovely meal but after this experience we won’t be returning… which is a shame. It’s all well and good winning an award but if you haven’t got the service to go with it, it’s worthless. When it was nearing 10pm we felt it was now our turn to finally give up and told them we wanted to leave, suddenly the food appeared and I must say, some of it was cold, and the food tasted ‘rushed’. So long and short of it, they can’t handle it when it’s busy. Poor service, and poor food. You either want to be a takeaway or a restaurant, because clearly you can’t do both.

Another enjoyable meal at Raj Garden Saturday evening with our family. The menu has an amazing choice at a very reasonable price. The staff were very friendly and attentive. We highly recommend this Indian Restaurant.

I have been here many times and celebrated with family and friends on special occasions. The staff always make you feel welcome, and nothing is too much trouble that you may ask for. Seriously great staff, they are so friendly, accommodating to people who have had a little too much to drink as well 😅, really considerate and understanding people. We were a table of 14 adults and children and they couldn't do enough to accommodate us. We had American relatives who had never eaten Indian food and they helped choose and took time to talk with us. Food was lovely although couple of the dishes were a little sweet but nice anyway. Service for a table our size was excellent. Constantly asking if we needed drinks or anything, very organised getting everyone their food and patient with the younger ones. The bill was extremely reasonable and our American relatives loved it! Thanks Raj Garden!

Very busy on the night we went 7 of us, obviously Service was slow but the staff are super friendly and helpful not pushy but near at hand for anything you need, food was lovely not one complaint at all nice atmosphere as well.

We were down in Watford after being to the football at the weekend, and although Sunderland let us down, Raj Garden did not - this is one of the best curries we have had! The restaurant is clean, spacious with really nice surroundings. We ordered a pickle tray, which with 8 dips was one of, if not the best we've ever had - not sure of name of one of them, but it had a coconut taste to it and it was fantastic. We went for the onion bhaji starter, which was fresh, soft, wonderfully cooked and we got 3 of them alongside a fresh side salad and lemon (complete with squeezer!) We then had a Chicken Madras from the main menu and from the 'hot lovers selection' Naga Murgh Dopiaza and the Naga Murgh Bhuna - honestly, we have all said this is one of, if not the the best curries we've had. Absolute taste sensation. We also ordered a Peshwari Naan, which was just as amazing and melted in your mouth. The staff were all so friendly too - they really do add to the experience and make you feel so welcome. The only downside is, they do not deliver all the way to us back in Sunderland!! Next time we are down in the Watford area, we'll be back for sure!!

Had pilau rice, chicken tikka masala with naan and the taste of the curry and rice was extremely sweet and did not meet my satisfactory needs. Normally a curry should not be this sweet. Left this place disappointed and left hungry for the day. Will not be coming back again.

Great food, and excellent service. Good ambience. Generous portions. The set meal was full of variety. I'm going back again soon. Revisited April 2024, and all food was lovely once again. Popped in July 2024 and still customer friendly service and food. It's always great.

This long established restaurant provides a consistently great service to the local community. They offer an imaginative and varied menu at great prices. The food is always delicious and served promptly. The manager and staff are professional, efficient and very friendly. Lovely place to get a curry and friendly staff

My son and I frequent the Sunday and/or Tuesday Gourmet Nights which are super value. The waiters are a smashing bunch of chaps; always welcoming and attentive. This evening we were looked after by Ali who was courteous, friendly and efficient. The quality of food is very good and we shall continue to patronise the place. I have been to the Raj garden many times over the years and it never fails to disappoint. Our server Ali was very attentive and did very good check backs. Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures. However, the service was great really genuinely lovely staff. Although when the order was taken,(not by Ali) it was a bit hap Hazard.t he was aking everyone mains dishes then rice dishes and then breads. The chicken in my butter chicken was nice. But I could tell it wasn't fresh. My mother had a chicken shashlik which is a staple for her. The atmosphere is lovely and relaxed. For me the poppadoms are my wife's fave. Make sure you get a good amount. They have red dyed coconut shavings which are delicious.

Always a pleasure, went there on the opening night around 27 years ago. Still the best food. I try and go whenever I am in the area. Went again last night with my daughter and her friends. Lovely to see Saddiq and the food and service was great as usual.

A very busy restaurant even on a Tuesday. But food quality wasn't good. Had the butter chicken but wasn't that nice. naan bread was burnt. Friendly staff but overall not impressed

We had the pleasure of visiting The Raj tonight. We had the jalfrazy, korma paneer, garlic naan and rice between two of us. The whole meal was outstanding and flavoursome (as usual). The service was excellent throughout, very friendly and attentive. 10/10 all round. Can’t wait to come back again!! 😊😊

Came here for friends' birthday after work on a Tuesday when they had their offer on. Their was 8 of us. The staff were friendly and despite the restaurant being packed, all meals came out together so noone was waiting around. Food was delicious and will be back. I had the lamb kebab, butter chicken, rice and bombay aloo. Highly recommend 👌

Friendliest restaurant ever ! Another great experience at Raj Garden last night. Always a warm welcome on arrival, we were a table of 6 and all of us thoroughly enjoyed the food. We had old favourites and tried some new things too. Very accommodating when I wanted to swap one item for another - this was no problem at all. Good value for money and the staff and service are superb. Highly recommend ! : x

Ordered takeaway at 5pm for delivery at 6.45pm.order number 9346. It didn’t arrive by 7.20pm so I called. It then arrived about 5 mins later albeit warm with no raita for the starter. I usually collect which is normally good but was very disappointed tonight.

Not bad but not as good as the reviews say. Whilst the food was ok it wasn't as good as what we are used to, the potatoes were dry and not much taste, the naan was well overdone and I couldn't taste any cheese and as for my Jalfrezi well that was so hot I couldn't eat it all and I like hot food. That was hotter than any vindaloo I've ever had and my work mate said the same. I think personally they made a mistake in the kitchen as that was nuclear! That aside as I said it wasn't' bad but not as nice as I've had around the country as you'll see from my other reviews. Also I know they were busy but an hour and a half for my main to come out and 45mins after my starters is way too long so never really enjoyed the experience either! Also the presentation of the food could do with some work.

A great restaurant very friendly service

I had a delightful experience at this restaurant. The service was commendable, with attentive and friendly server personnel. The chicken and lamb dishes were particularly outstanding, showcasing the chef’s skill and flavor expertise. While the overall dining experience was impressive, I believe there’s room for improvement in the prawn Biryani. It could be enhanced for an even more satisfying taste. Nevertheless, I’m giving it a solid 4 stars, appreciating the positive aspects and looking forward to returning.

Found on internet staying in area overnight had excellent meal and amazing service on Sunday night special offer. Well worth a visit.

Terrible food We ordered paneer tikka masala - it was red in colour like beet red so clearly loads of colour added. Paneer was chewy and the curry was sweet like made with tomato ketchup. Mix veg dry was below average but not as bad as the paneer. We have eaten here once before and the food was decent. Last night was a shocker.
