The Raj in York

The food here was fantastic, I had the naga lamb and it was first class , my wife had the chicken dupiaza and loved it. Nice restaurant and great service. Starters were very nice too.

We don’t know York and fancied a curry, it was a Saturday and we hadn’t booked but were found a table and served fairly quickly. Lovely pickles and poppadoms, tasty Biryani and onion bhajis. Just enough and very satisfying. Great to see local families using the restaurant.

Avoid!!!! Terrible customer service and chaotic, served by 5 different staff members. Wrong dish given to me, I said it’s not what I had ordered, waiter tutted and said “just try it”. Diet coke tasted awful, couldn’t drink more that two sips, I told the waiter this and he laughed. Beer was flat too, again waiter laughed and walked off.

Met up with family and we all had a really lovely meal. Service was fast and staff were really nice. Food excellent

Food very nice ,the service all over the place and a little chaotic at times but we went for the food and that was fine I’m sure we will return.

Went with my partner and we both really enjoyed our meals. The onion bhajis were so nice, and my partner said her curry was just right. The service was great and we will definitely be back.

First time trying Indian food, and the truth is that I was surprised by how delicious it is. Very friendly staff, and cozy atmosphere. Excellent experience

The Raj is a relatively small Indian restaurant just outside the walls of the City of York. Not sufficiently advertised in tourist literature in my opinion. The staff are efficient and friendly and the menu offers a wide choice of sone more unusual Indian cuisine. I opted for a house special and was not disappointed. The house red wine was a real treat and two meals plus the wine came to £50, great value!

This place is a no go! First reason food was mediocre, but for us the biggest letdown was the rude staff, when you spend £80 on food and drink you don’t expect to be ushered out like cattle, I said we haven’t finished he said well we are closed ! So rude, other people were still eating and has hovering over them, extremely rude and offensive we most certainly will never go back and will be spending the word to friends and family to avoid at length.

As it was Monday and early, it wasn’t busy. When I eat out somewhere new, I look for the hygiene rating and reviews. Any food hygiene rating below an 4 gets a miss. Any restaurant’s average rating below a 4 usually gets a miss. The food MUST be hot and so to the plates, if they’re not, I’m unlikely to return. Both of the staff that we encountered were polite and friendly, and service was great. Mixed kebab was good. Chicken Naga, the best I’ve ever had. Perfect. My wife’s Chicken Rezella was also very nice. Mushroom rice and chips to share also didn’t disappoint. We’ve visited the Bengal Brasserie and Bombay spice in the area and the meals at the Raj, imo, were superior. The interior is dated though, but times are tough at the moment for restaurants to fund refurbs Very small nitpick - Staff could do with being in a uniform. 5 star hygiene rating. Decent Google rating. Food and plates hot. And the meals worth every penny. Would I return?? If we are in the area again, 100% we will return.

We found this gem of a place last night and enjoyed the food so much that we are going back again tonight. Staff are friendly and it was a pleasant atmosphere.

The food is amazing, get the Lamb Imani and garlic naan, I’ve eaten here with friends many times and when I order the Imani it is always everyone’s favorite dish. Absolutely just an amazing dish!

We came at the recommendation of our receptionist at our hotel. Food was beautifully cooked with my chicken being very tender. Drinks and food were reasonably priced for centre of york and service and staff were brilliant!

Rude behaviour dont visit.🚫Visited place as family.we ordered rice dishes for 2 and a curry but the service was Declined as we didnt order main course for 3 that includes a child.they advised to order a nan or someting against our food requirement.we were ready to order more but the behaviour was upsetting.they could have politely say the policy or could have written at entrance.the staff said it's wastage of money of setting up if table something like that.if it's their policy they could say while entering.anyhow was dissapointing as an Indian facing this kind of situation.never gonna visit this place or gonna recommend.

Picked up a take away from the Raj Poor flavours, texture. Chicken tikka masala, pillar box red ,flavour nondescript and chicken texture odd. Onion bhaji not crisp and oily. Other curries lacked flavour. Biryani chicken, looked like the cooked chicken was just diced and added at the end and not cooked with the rice. Overall ,all dishes , very poor.

Visited here as I love my curry and have eaten many over the years. The curry was average and flavourless. The lamb dish was just spiced up with curry powder. For me over rated

Fantastic food and very friendly staff

Lovely place, staff very nice. Ordered Imani chicken for me and Imani lamb for my wife, lovely flavour, my only problem was it was advertised as medium hot but was quite mild. Everyone’s tastes are different. I will be back there though.

A fantastic Christmas day lunch at thr Raj. Super service, great food and value. Starters (mixed kebab and onion bhaji) the best we have had in a long long time with lovely crisp bhajis. Friendly staff who were good for a bit of Yuletide banter. Highly recommended.

Great food, excellent service, friendly atmosphere, a really good choice for Christmas Day. We've been to a few Indian restaurants on Xmas Day but we all agreed this was the best. Pretty busy, which added to the atmosphere, but the service was impeccable. Will definitely return.

If you want uncontrollable diarrhoea at 2am, you should order from the Raj at around 7pm …and why are Indian restaurants obsessed with promoting themselves as “fully licensed” and “fully air conditioned” - is it possible to be partially licensed, or partially air conditioned? I would rather they were “fully compliant” with food hygiene guidelines. On a positive note, it looks like Dame Kelley Holmes looked through the window in 1995, so they obviously have an illustrious clientele.

I nipped in on a busy friday night hoping that they had a table for 2. They had a party being held but said we could have a table for 1 hour 15 minute but then the party would need it. The service was brilliant and we got our food really fast. The food was amazing I would highly recommend this restaurant but would advise to book… I got lucky on the night with a last minute table.

10/10 best food I ever had. I would fly there again just to eat the butter chicken for a second time.

This place does not deserve even a one star rating. In my opinion they are ZERO on all fronts. First of all the food is PATHETIC. Their chef needs some training on how to cook Indian food. What they served is utter horrible food and could not be consumed at all. The chicken was not fresh and seemed old. On top of that the cooking was shockingly horrible. Services was also poor and the staff is very arrogant. Its funny that they have the audacity to be so arrogant after cooking such tasteless horrible food. If you want to enjoy good Indian food, the first decision is to avoid this place. There are many other good Indian restaurants in York.

Came across this restaurant by accident and I’m so glad. The food is stunning and great service. We will 100% be going back before we go home.

We ordered a take away and very disappointed. Papadums and onion Bhaji was ok. The two bhunas we ordered were tasteless. After I poured off the oil slick on the top, there wasn’t any sauce at all. It was more like a tasteless stir fry. The chicken texture was like it has been stewed. We will be going elsewhere in future.

Ordered through Deliveroo. The food was extremely greasy and bland.

Best Lamb Balti I've ever tasted!

Ordered through just eat, ordered with you guys multiple times and had nothing wrong with anything I normally actually enjoy it, but tonight me and my partner both ordered a chicken tikka masala and a naan bread aswell as some rice, we have had to leave it and order from elsewhere as the tikka was overpowered by salt it’s literally all you can taste, the rice and naan were both cold also, delivery was great came within half an hour but the food was so poor £30 down the drain won’t be ordering again!

Visiting York with my sister. Had a really excellent vegetarian meal . Food was very tasty & freshly prepared. Will certainly visit again when in York.

A little rough around the edges but at the end of the day it’s just a standard Indian restaurant experience. The food was nice enough but exceptionally spicy, I eat quite a bit of Indian food and I think they over spice the food here. Prices are generally what you would expect.

Food could only be described as average, in a room on our own, charged EXTRA for pickles with my poppadom, never had this before. Won't be going back

Utterly disappointing and lacklustre service. We were made to feel like we were doing them a favour by dining in the restaurant. I mean, I don’t even know where to begin. It was like a bad sketch show. Zero warmth from the staff, questioning why we would order only 3 popadoms (there were 6 of us and I didn’t realise every person needed one) gristly chewy prawns (gross), being handed our plates rather than placing them, seated in a run-down room off the main restaurant. Having to wait 10 minutes before someone even can to check-in with us. Apparently, you need to order your food first and drinks 5 minutes later. Coca-Cola was warm with no option of ice (asked for ice twice and waited 5 minutes for it to arrive) Fever Tree Ginger Ale came with ice but arrived already poured. For all we knew it wasn’t actually Fever Tree. Their only saving grace (apart from decent naan breads) was our party of 6 excluding myself said they enjoyed their meal but was no comparison to what they were used to at home in India. Also, get a uniform for your staff, couldn’t actually tell staff from customers. Will never return and will never recommend. Terrible!

We had the opportunity to eat lamb bhuna with my sister, and I should say that we both liked it very much. I recommend here to those who want to taste Indian flavors.

Order a vodka coke came flat told them they took it away came back just as flat and worst was charged £10. The food was average service average atmosphere average. Not worth a visit Cross the road as i did the following night to Taas fantastic service food, service and drinks that were not flat.

We've had takeaways from here before which have been very tasty. Booked a table for a birthday meal, when we walked in we were ignored for 10 minutes while the waiter sorted out a Deliveroo order. Food was ok but nothing special, and service met the bare minimum. Felt very rushed.

All I want is value for money poppadoms pickle tray set the mood. Needless to say for me after that not so much. My meal imo lacked spice and it was a special with a medium curry. (Didn't even break a sweat) Ordered keema naan decent size but the filling was flat literally flat ...it had slide down inside the actual naan if u can picture that . No fresh limes for tonic water ..

Thank you for a fanatic meal and friendly service we felt very welcome. I recommend coming here and would we would certainly return on a future visit to York.

I can honestly say it is the worst food experience of my life. Chicken an lamb? Chicken and dog. For genuine spices and good Indian food go elsewhere. I spent the night on the toilet because it was so bad. Avoid if you can.

Lovely meal last night (3 of us) my chicken pathia was perfect. From Kent and we’ve been numerous times since 2017. This is a superbly clean well run restaurant serving delicious food. Raj (boss) and his accommodating team are always happy to help with menu choices. We find it best to arrive early evening.

The Raj cancelled my order 90 minutes after making. Never again. If you can't cope with the orders, don't accept them.

A really excellent dining experience, the staff were friendly and attentive while not being pushy and answered our questions on the dishes with patience. We had the butter chicken (mild) and a lamb rooshni (medium hot/hot). Both dishes were excellent with the meat melting in the mouth. portion sizes were perfect, enough to feel full but not bloated and the final price was very reasonable considering the quality of the food. We will definitely return when we are next in York.

Rudest disgraceful service I have seen in a long time. Ordered via Deliveroo App which said will be delivered 19:30. The due time was then updated to 20:00. Then another update saying due 20:30. At 20:10 I get a notification saying it’s been collected and on it’s way. A very nice Deliveroo driver turned up to advise me he had been allocated my order but when he went to collect it they had given to someone else and I should contact them. Well, when I asked what was going on I was repeatedly told it’s not their problem. Even though they gave my order to the wrong collection person they still rudely said the order had been delivered. Although I said I did not have it and told them the whole story again they would not listen. Respect to the delivery driver coming to my house to let me know. He also advised he always has issues like this at the Raj. This order was never collected and never received although they will get my money. Absolute rip off scam. Will now dispute and report to my bank. Avoid ordering from here. Plenty of other great Indian food in the area. REPLY TO YOUR RESPONE: None of this is lol! You gave my order to the wrong rider / driver so you have to take some responsibility. Where is your duty of care to ensure the correct order is collected or do you just let anyone walking in off the street grab what ever is there?

We had a lovely meal here. Service was good and food tasted fantastic. The portion sizes were really reasonable, especially the chutney tray! Will be back soon.

Delicious curry. Not the cheapest in York, however it was very good quality and generous portion sizes. We even received a free mushroom rice with our order. Highly recommend the Andala curry!

worst pakora I have ever had £3.25 for 4 bits of veg pakora are you having a laugh and chicken pakora was all fat and loads of batter and hardly any chicken

Came here with my fiancée for a nice meal and we 100% got are money worth the food was amazing and the service pluss atmosphere was just as good a very welcoming and relaxed place to come for food

Got recommended by a friend to try here as he said it was the best in town, came for a sit down meal and was served by Apu, got to say it was honestly a fantastic experience and lived up to the hype! The food was tasty, the chicken cooked really well and the naan was fresh and soft! Really great meal and great service, definitely recommend!

We ordered chicken madras, tandoori butter chicken, mushroom pilau, plain naan and peshwari naan. Chicken madras was perfect. I really liked it. Butter chicken was a bit too sweet, but still very nice. Mushroom rice was quite simple, compared to other places. However, it was the best naan I have ever had. That, alone, was worth the experience. Really recommend to get a naan with your food. Coke was not great, as didn't have bubbles.

We dined here on Saturday 4th March 2023 with a party of 14 of us. It was my best friend's stag do. The staff at The Raj went above and beyond to accommodate us and make us feel welcome. The food was delicious and we can't thank them enough for accepting our booking at short notice. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anybody visiting York.

Very disappointing food was very bland.

THE WORST Indian meal ever. The Lamb bhuna was just lumps of grey, stewed lamb sitting in a puddle of water with no sauce of any kind. Chicken Chaat was completely inedible because there was SO much salt. One mouthful each, spat out. The Butter Chicken tasted overwhelmingly of rancid, boiled cauliflower. The pilau rice consisted of huge mushy lumps of differently dyed rice 'mixed' into undercooked white rice. Just awful.

Nice food a bit quick in telling you what to order

Every single delivery I've had so far has been perfect but todays has been especially a standout. Apart from the slightly burnt onion bhaji I recieved, everything was top knotch. The chicken tikka was still steaming when I opened the Raj Box! Amazing as always and definitely recommend. I haven't dined in the restaurant yet but delivery has always been amazing

I had the chicken dopiaza what can I say the best curry I have had in York. The food was well cooked and portions are good and the food was ready in around 15 minutes. Waiter staff were friendly and polite they even arranged seating for a large group of people that turned up from the street. I would recommend this place. When I am next in York I will be going back there for a curry.

Ordered and collected Takeaway. Resturant looks good, nice ambiance and good menu (A bit different in terms of names of Indian dishes)..! Food, too sweet (3-4 different chicken and paneer dishes ordered). Cooked nicely, but too sweet. Even the spicy chicken dish was too sweet…! Thank you for the complementary popoddums ..!

Watered down, bland korma, not marinated in sauce, chicken added to the watery korma! Chips aren't chips they are fries, chapati and nan bread wafer thin, so thin you could see through them! Food arrived cold too despite being practically on our doorstep! Wouldn't recommend this place, stick to supermarket style curry's, it's worth it!

Can't say enough how wonderful the service & food are. Just Eat let us down with a delivery at a v busy time for the restaurant. Instead of leaving us w nothing, the restaurant staff brought it themselves. Not only that, it's some of the best Indian food we've ever eaten. Can thoroughly recommend.

We had a great night here. The staff and service was awesome! The food was delish. We all enjoyed our food and we would definently go back again.

Not the greatest. The food itself was very nice, but just a couple of points I found slightly disappointing. Firstly we were greeted by a young chap in a hooded sweatshirt and joggers, who then took our order for the meal. Now I'm no expert, but this look was not what I was expecting from an evening out with my partner to a restaurant. Secondly, the whole seating area was very close and we literally were sat in the middle between a couple of tables, less than a foot apart either side, so not very private or romantic. Thirdly, and probably the most important, the fact we were overcharged for both our main meals so check your bill before paying. One last point is the whole place looks very tired and lacking any love or care. We probably wouldn't return.

If i could give 0 stars I would. I pre ordered my food at 1630hrs on the deliveroo app to be delivered at 1800hrs. Imagine my disappointment as I kept seeing my delivery time get later and later.. I decided to call the Raj at 1912hrs to find out where my food was only to be told "we've sent it to get cooked". I informed the restaurant that I no longer required the food as I'd booked for myself, a friend and his kids who were no going home to bed. I was told they couldn't refund, and I'd need to contact deliveroo (a global company directly). I asked to speak to the manager 3 times and was refused every time. My food turned up at 1930hrs but my friend had gone home. I'm now left with £54 worth of food which I won't be able to eat.... customer service = garbage, no one had the foresight to contact me and advise of the problem (order not sent to the kitchen) which is a joke. I like the quality of the food but this whole experience will make me go to another Indian Restaurant for my takeaway namely The Indian Ocean in Acomb

The worst ever so called India Restaurant!! Tesco chicken slices in Tike chicken curry sauce! Prawn biryani is actually prawn fried rice comes in a plate! This place is not catered for indian food total shambles!!! Food taste sweet a lot sugar and colouring added! I never write any review in my life but honestly avoid this place people! Thank me later.

On arrival the waiter took us around the back never smiled never said Hello, just follow me... all waiters did not smile even though we were smiling and being polite. It was my sisters and brother-in-laws 32nd Wedding Anniversary and so I asked the last waiter to take a photo us all, no response to what I told him, you can just tell how let down we felt by the end of the meal look closely at the photo. We ordered our food it arrived at about 8 30 and we sat for 7 20 and both our curries the chicken rogan josh was all tomatoes with no flavour and the garlic chicken there speciality dish the chicken was very dry and not tasty! All curries weren't hot! have come here twice before over the past 2 years with no disappointment, we've come from the Midlands, what's happened have you changed management?? Very unhappy
