The Raj in York

Excellent food, excellent service, excellent vegan options. I was the only vegan in a party of 4 adults and the options available to me were very good. I do like a very hot curry so I chose the 'Vegan Vindaloo' and I honestly think it was the best I have ever had as the balance between the Vindaloo heat and the Vindaloo flavour was absolutely perfect. The whole experience was so good that two of the party went back a few days later with some other friends.

Easily the best curry I’ve had, with fantastic side dishes to make the meal really enjoyable. 100% recommend. Thank you!

Probably the best Indian takeaway I have ever had. I have been harping on about this place to friends. Their lamb Balti lahori, and passanda are *insane*. I also really enjoy their brinjal bhaji. I have ordered multiple times (for delivery) and haven't been disappointed in the quality of the food we received. So I'd imagine it's even better when in restaurant. Occasionally, Uber eats have messed up and failed to deliver, but they even put up with me calling to chase when hangry; that's saying something!

Whilst visiting York ordered takeaway food - the Chicken Rogan Josh more of a tomato based stew! The food was also cold! An expensive mistake won’t be repeated again Shocking

Good portion sizes, a lot of meat in the curry’s and pretty good value. The sauces were fine but nothing special. A hell of a lot of onion in all dishes. An hour after eating all I can taste is onion. Not a terrible Indian but certainly not a fantastic one either.

Never had a bad curry from here. Be warned - they only give you the poppadoms you ask for, don't expect freebies!

The chips tasted stale, the nan bread wasn’t fully cooked and the delivery driver wasn’t helpful at all, by the time we got the order it was cold

Very misbehaving and very rude a young gay working in this restaurant if I know that type of service they are present when i arrived then never went in this restaurant highly not recommend he should apology but he treated me like I am his employ or I am working under him this is very shameful and unexpected

Unfortunately we had some issues with our meal. The plates were dirty, the drinks order was wrong, the food order was wrong for a few of us. We had to ask 3 times for water and about 6 times for the bill. The service was almost non existent and the food wasn’t hot when it arrived. It’s a shame because some of the food was tasty but overall a poor experience.

Placed the order prior to the restaurant opening, needing it delivered within the hour as we had tickets for an event. Delivery was almost 2 hours after the restaurant opened. We were unable to enjoy the food until after the event when I realised that the chicken tikka main I had ordered did not come with any salad or mint sauce as described, which made the dish much less enjoyable and less fulfilling. An unfortunate experience all round and doubt I’ll be ordering from them again.

After a day of trudging around York and sampling some excellent real ales,the obligatory evening curry was called for.The lady at our B&B said The Raj was very good.So we took her advice.Having eaten lunch earlier and quite full on real ales ,we chose to share a meal.Poppadoms and relish tray with mango chutney lime pickle and onion and tomato& mint sauce.Then shared onion bhajis And had Chicken byriani which came with a vegetable sauce mild to medium.Ordered an additional Vindaloo sauce and a garlic nann.A pint of bombay bicycle,a pint of Cobra and a glass of coke total £46.10.It might seem alot however poppadoms and relish tray was £8 and drinks likely£12. Anyway the service was excellent, as were all the food components.All freshly cooked and presented.I really rate an indian /Bangladeshi restaurant on their vindaloo.And on this they delivered.Really Really good.As was the whole meal.No problems recommending this establishment.

Gran comida una de las mejores que he tenido y confía en mí he tenido algunas. Excelente servicio buena cerveza y excelente comida alrededor. Solo teníamos poppadoms y bandeja de pepinillos y la red, pero me gustaría haber tenido un entrante ahora.

We have come here every year as a group for the last 5 years to do our awards night. The back room is fantastic for this and the Raj have always been great hosts. The food is always excellent and the staff have always been really friendly and helpful. Some favourite dishes have been the Chicken Shashlik & Vindaloo. We would recommend to other sports clubs to book in, as it's an excellent venue for an event like this. Additionally, anyone who just wants a great Indian meal in the heart of York, this is your place to go.

Request for 8pm (at 6.10) didn’t arrive till 8.40 the only negative thing about this restaurant as food is stunning

Really enjoyable visit last week! We had a mix of tandoori butter chicken, Lamb passanda and Chicken jalfarazi - all delicious and great service for our table. I would really recommend! Great location too

We always eat here when in York and we absolutely love it. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and the food is always incredibly nice.

Fab food but cold. Thr Raj box is the best take away ever. Husband only had half a portion of rice and only one chapati despite paying for two. All that said, best curry in York

They were great at accommodating our allergen requests but a lot of the food was very bland, not sure we’d eat here again but the staff were very friendly!

Was recommended to go here by owner of B&B we stayed at. Great recommendation excellent service as soon as you walk through the door. Food very good, hot, served quickly. Good portions couldn’t finish it. Friendly staff. Would recommend and if we ever stay in York again will return.

Visited while on work trip to York. It was a short walk from our B&B. I had lamb biryani and sag pneer with a peshawari nann. All very delicious and not oily. Good attentive service with out being rushed to order.

Visité el restaurante por primera vez el sábado con amigos. El restaurante se ve un poco cansado, pero no dejó que esto nos pospusiera. El servicio era podría haber sido mejor camarero fue un poco abrupto, pero estábamos fuera con amigos, así que de nuevo no nos dejó posponer. La comida era encantadora y sabrosa, el único negativo era el entrante y la porción de arroz era muy pequeña, pero había mucha carne en el curry, así que todos estábamos contentos.

Take no notice of the review on their own site, this place is not that. Not met with a warm smile! Poations are too small, was brought the spice tray and charged £3.50 for it even though we never asked for it. Our nan bread was supposed to be stuffed with cheese and onion as per the menu! Not possible, it was as thin as a rizla paper and bland! Curry and rice were nice but paying what we paid, we expected more. I declined on the card reader to pay a tip but our bill still went up by £2 upon paying. Next time i'm in town, i won't be going there and i do not recommend it.

Food was piping hot, well packaged and clearly labelled. So tasty and delivered on time.

Great food but terrible service. We ate in a couple of years back and enjoyed the food but had very bad service so decided we’d only order takeout. Unfortunately the service with takeout is now just as bad. I was told the food was ready at 18:45 so drove the restaurant. Didn’t get the food till 19:20. Convinced they only started cooking it when I got there. Unfortunately we’ll have to find somewhere new for takeout now as all we got was a disgruntled sorry for the wait after being sat in the busy waiting room for nearly 30 mins.

Usually fantastic. Today. Main arrived slightly cold. Dish advertised as medium hot. Was more akin to tomato soup. One popadom stale, one fresh. Garlic nann stale. The only good thing was the samosa And for £5 it needed to be. Disappointed. Not usually. But standards dropped tonight.

Our go-to for good quality Indian food

Very good food, as always, from The Raj. The only disappointment was receiving one broken poppadom with no mango chutney. I ordered 3 mains, plus sides, and assumed 95p for poppadoms would mean we'd receive a few of them, not just one? But all good apart from that.

First time I had ever had Vindaloo and it did not disappoint. One small issue was this restaurant uses a lot of sugar to their dishes more than what I am accustomed to but it was very delicious nonetheless.

The restaurant was so busy and chaotic therefore the drinks to table service was very slow. The food however was stunning one of the best meals we've experienced. Would definitely recommend and return when next visiting York but check your bill as £10 had been added to ours in error

Awful. Talk about get you in get you out The whole meal Inc poppadoms,starter and main took less than half an hour! In fact only 2 minutes between taking starter plates and bringing out mains. Food very poor n tasteless disguised with spice when it shoukd’ve been a medium far too hot to be enjoyable. Do not recommend worst Indian ever been to.

The Raj is a great place to have a curry, we frequently visit for our football team get togethers and have never had a bad experience! Food is lovely, all the staff are polite and the atmosphere is always good! 100% recommend eating here!

Every single year we go here for a curry after our cricket season has finished and every single year the food has been amazing. The food is as good as you will get anywhere in the city and the staff are super friendly. Genuinely couldn't recommend an Indian more highly.

I had an extremely disappointing experience at this so-called “Indian” restaurant, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. First off, the staff were shockingly unprofessional. They seemed completely uninterested in serving customers and acted as if they were doing us a favor by even acknowledging our presence. To make matters worse, this is not an authentic Indian restaurant as advertised—it’s actually Bangladeshi. While I have no issue with Bangladeshi cuisine, I do have an issue with misleading customers. If you’re claiming to be an Indian restaurant, be transparent about what you’re offering! Then there are the hidden charges. The prices on the menu are deceiving, as you’ll end up paying significantly more once mysterious additional fees are tacked onto your bill. When I politely questioned these extra charges, the staff responded with outright rudeness and hostility. The combination of unprofessional service, false advertising, and hidden costs makes this place an absolute disaster. Save your time, money, and sanity—go somewhere else.

Early October, early evening , midweek visit. The good bits. 1. Food was really good. 2 Service to the table was quick 3. 5 star hygiene rating. Bad bits. 1. Your website states “70-seater restaurant has been completely refurbished” in what decade was that? It’s probably the worst interior of any Indian restaurant, anywhere in the world that I've been in. Plaster on walls cracking, bits of it have come off, filth on the bottom of the doors, dirty walls, dirty radiators and the bathroom is like something from the 70’s.. completely refurbished, that’s a stretch. 2. The older gentlemen. Raj, as you studied business, you will know how members of staff are vitally important to the success of any business, then you need to sort this out, family member or part owner, or whatever, he should not be serving customers. What a miserable, miserable man, it’s like he simply can’t be arsed smiling. Seeing as the food was really nice, I handed him more than a 20% cash tip. Sod all reaction, zip, nada. Nothing! Based on the experience overall. Hygiene rating 5* Food 5 Value for money 5. Restaurant ambience 1 Staff, 1 (older gentleman killed that score for all of you) 3.4 total feedback Would I recommend your restaurant to others? despite the bad bits, yes I would, only because the food is that good, sadly letdown by the refurbishment claim, and the staff member.

Took the family out for an Indian meal whilst in York. Chose this place carefully based upon available data. Booked for 5.45, and was pleasantly surprised on arrival to find that there were a number of diners seated and eating already. A good sign of popularity. Starters were excellent. Really excellent. Mains all good, except for Balti which was silly sweet tasting. Shared usual food order for 2 ‘chaps’ between 3, and had plenty. Still £76 though. Mains priced well. Starters too. But chutneys and rice a bit high.

We live in the North of Scotland and visit York every Octobers. The Raj is always top of our list of restaurants to visit and we just have the best meal everytime. Service and food is out of this world, best Indian restaurant in York 😊

Great curry. Left a note when placing order about food allergy and they called to ensure they understood allergy and that I would be safe to eat.

I ordered takeaway yesterday from Deliveroo, one special curry with a garlic naan and a portion of special Biryani. The foods were great, very tasty. I’ve been ordered from here twice. Anyhow, I really doubt the hygiene of foods since I got food poisoning the next day. I’ve been throwing up the day and got a high fever as well. If you can improve the food hygiene, I believe your restaurant will be the best in York. Thanks

Lovely food - really flavourful.

Tandoori Mixed grill was poor quality , used to be chicken breast piece in this dish , now a chicken leg which was very over cooked. Smallish naan . Pickle tray was watery. Eaten in restaurant a few times and really enjoyed and even recommended. First time of ordering take away and it will be last time . Very poor for the price.

Over 2 hours late & saying it’s been delivered but still have not received our food

the order didn't turn up I had to call the restaurant and have them make it again for Me 2 hours later as they said it should of been there ages ago seems a driver took my order not good as had a unhappy child think I deserve my money back for that won't be using just eat again

While on vacation in York and with no reservation we did a walk-in for dinner. Staff were welcoming, and attentive with good service being provided. The restaurant environment itself was clean. The meal we had was excellent, so good that we went back another time before leaving York. We would definitely recommend The Raj for anyone.
