The Raj in York

Visited while on work trip to York. It was a short walk from our B&B. I had lamb biryani and sag pneer with a peshawari nann. All very delicious and not oily. Good attentive service with out being rushed to order.

Take no notice of the review on their own site, this place is not that. Not met with a warm smile! Poations are too small, was brought the spice tray and charged £3.50 for it even though we never asked for it. Our nan bread was supposed to be stuffed with cheese and onion as per the menu! Not possible, it was as thin as a rizla paper and bland! Curry and rice were nice but paying what we paid, we expected more. I declined on the card reader to pay a tip but our bill still went up by £2 upon paying. Next time i'm in town, i won't be going there and i do not recommend it.

Food was piping hot, well packaged and clearly labelled. So tasty and delivered on time.

Great food but terrible service. We ate in a couple of years back and enjoyed the food but had very bad service so decided we’d only order takeout. Unfortunately the service with takeout is now just as bad. I was told the food was ready at 18:45 so drove the restaurant. Didn’t get the food till 19:20. Convinced they only started cooking it when I got there. Unfortunately we’ll have to find somewhere new for takeout now as all we got was a disgruntled sorry for the wait after being sat in the busy waiting room for nearly 30 mins.

Thw restaurant had cooked my food on time. Just eat didnt send out a driver for 2 hours to the restaurant. This is totally unacceptable.

Usually fantastic. Today. Main arrived slightly cold. Dish advertised as medium hot. Was more akin to tomato soup. One popadom stale, one fresh. Garlic nann stale. The only good thing was the samosa And for £5 it needed to be. Disappointed. Not usually. But standards dropped tonight.

Our go-to for good quality Indian food

Very good food, as always, from The Raj. The only disappointment was receiving one broken poppadom with no mango chutney. I ordered 3 mains, plus sides, and assumed 95p for poppadoms would mean we'd receive a few of them, not just one? But all good apart from that.

First time I had ever had Vindaloo and it did not disappoint. One small issue was this restaurant uses a lot of sugar to their dishes more than what I am accustomed to but it was very delicious nonetheless.

The restaurant was so busy and chaotic therefore the drinks to table service was very slow. The food however was stunning one of the best meals we've experienced. Would definitely recommend and return when next visiting York but check your bill as £10 had been added to ours in error

The Imani Lamb Curry here is the best curry I've ever tasted- I'd strongly recommend!

The best Indian in York. Extremely tasty food and lovely friendly staff. We go regularly with family and everytime the service and food is unbeatable. You will never regret going to the raj!!

Lovely food, atmospheric and reliable.

Every single year we go here for a curry after our cricket season has finished and every single year the food has been amazing. The food is as good as you will get anywhere in the city and the staff are super friendly. Genuinely couldn't recommend an Indian more highly.

The Raj is a great place to have a curry, we frequently visit for our football team get togethers and have never had a bad experience! Food is lovely, all the staff are polite and the atmosphere is always good! 100% recommend eating here!

I had an extremely disappointing experience at this so-called “Indian” restaurant, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. First off, the staff were shockingly unprofessional. They seemed completely uninterested in serving customers and acted as if they were doing us a favor by even acknowledging our presence. To make matters worse, this is not an authentic Indian restaurant as advertised—it’s actually Bangladeshi. While I have no issue with Bangladeshi cuisine, I do have an issue with misleading customers. If you’re claiming to be an Indian restaurant, be transparent about what you’re offering! Then there are the hidden charges. The prices on the menu are deceiving, as you’ll end up paying significantly more once mysterious additional fees are tacked onto your bill. When I politely questioned these extra charges, the staff responded with outright rudeness and hostility. The combination of unprofessional service, false advertising, and hidden costs makes this place an absolute disaster. Save your time, money, and sanity—go somewhere else.

Early October, early evening , midweek visit. The good bits. 1. Food was really good. 2 Service to the table was quick 3. 5 star hygiene rating. Bad bits. 1. Your website states “70-seater restaurant has been completely refurbished” in what decade was that? It’s probably the worst interior of any Indian restaurant, anywhere in the world that I've been in. Plaster on walls cracking, bits of it have come off, filth on the bottom of the doors, dirty walls, dirty radiators and the bathroom is like something from the 70’s.. completely refurbished, that’s a stretch. 2. The older gentlemen. Raj, as you studied business, you will know how members of staff are vitally important to the success of any business, then you need to sort this out, family member or part owner, or whatever, he should not be serving customers. What a miserable, miserable man, it’s like he simply can’t be arsed smiling. Seeing as the food was really nice, I handed him more than a 20% cash tip. Sod all reaction, zip, nada. Nothing! Based on the experience overall. Hygiene rating 5* Food 5 Value for money 5. Restaurant ambience 1 Staff, 1 (older gentleman killed that score for all of you) 3.4 total feedback Would I recommend your restaurant to others? despite the bad bits, yes I would, only because the food is that good, sadly letdown by the refurbishment claim, and the staff member.

Took the family out for an Indian meal whilst in York. Chose this place carefully based upon available data. Booked for 5.45, and was pleasantly surprised on arrival to find that there were a number of diners seated and eating already. A good sign of popularity. Starters were excellent. Really excellent. Mains all good, except for Balti which was silly sweet tasting. Shared usual food order for 2 ‘chaps’ between 3, and had plenty. Still £76 though. Mains priced well. Starters too. But chutneys and rice a bit high.

Best in York. Delicious and always delivered piping hot. Keema rice is full of flavour and the tikka bhuna was amazing

Came with husband. Felt a little pushed to order pomadoms but they were tasty with dips but curries were unfortunately disappointing. The tikka has no spice at all more like tomato sauce the staff were great but a little disappointed with food all a bit bland

Amazing food as always, wasn’t hot like normal as it said it was on its way at 8:05pm didn’t arrive till 8:40pm the driver on the map went in the opposite direction to were I live not sure if it was a glitch

Was visiting my son and he recommended the food from here. Was the nicest tikka masala I’ve ever tasted. Chips were really nice as was the rice and naan bread. 10/10 very nice !

We live in the North of Scotland and visit York every Octobers. The Raj is always top of our list of restaurants to visit and we just have the best meal everytime. Service and food is out of this world, best Indian restaurant in York 😊

Great curry. Left a note when placing order about food allergy and they called to ensure they understood allergy and that I would be safe to eat.

I ordered takeaway yesterday from Deliveroo, one special curry with a garlic naan and a portion of special Biryani. The foods were great, very tasty. I’ve been ordered from here twice. Anyhow, I really doubt the hygiene of foods since I got food poisoning the next day. I’ve been throwing up the day and got a high fever as well. If you can improve the food hygiene, I believe your restaurant will be the best in York. Thanks

Popped in and got a takeaway which was absolutely delicious! Ordered two very tasty curries, chips, naan and rice. 10/10

Lovely food - really flavourful.

Tandoori Mixed grill was poor quality , used to be chicken breast piece in this dish , now a chicken leg which was very over cooked. Smallish naan . Pickle tray was watery. Eaten in restaurant a few times and really enjoyed and even recommended. First time of ordering take away and it will be last time . Very poor for the price.

the order didn't turn up I had to call the restaurant and have them make it again for Me 2 hours later as they said it should of been there ages ago seems a driver took my order not good as had a unhappy child think I deserve my money back for that won't be using just eat again

Visited this place on the off chance, staff were very welcoming and nothing was too much for them. Food was tasty and arrived hot and at a good price point. Would recommend.

While on vacation in York and with no reservation we did a walk-in for dinner. Staff were welcoming, and attentive with good service being provided. The restaurant environment itself was clean. The meal we had was excellent, so good that we went back another time before leaving York. We would definitely recommend The Raj for anyone.

Doesn't look much from the outside, the inside is pretty unassuming as well , the service was ok but not outstanding but the chicken jalfrezi and the coriander naan were near perfect ..

Food was nice. The older gentleman server was beyond rude and needs some customer services training! No smile once, made me and my daughter feel so awkward! The atmosphere was tense as everyone watched this one man who was for want of a better word, grumpy! Made us feel like we shouldn’t be there and not welcoming at all. Shame as food was nice. Won’t be back and don’t recommend.

Delivery time was fine but food quality was disappointing. A couple of dishes were greasy and the tandoori chicken was hard and dry, as if it had been reheated from the previous day. Will think twice before ordering again.

Visited with my partner and children when on holiday in York. I specifically looked online for a restaurant that served vegan options before we went in. When we arrived and read the menu I spoke with the guy who served us (owner possibly?) and enquired about the ‘vegan options’ on the menu. He corrected me that they were vegetarian… I asked if they were vegan as listed and he said yes (rudely and nonchalantly I might add). I then asked if the chips were vegan he replied “I guess so yes.” I asked if any of the breads listed were vegan, he sighed and said that all the naan breads were cooked in the same oil and therefore were not vegan. I therefore declined a bread. He then said “you can have a chapati they are vegan” (answering my original question eventually). I left the table after our poppadoms to use the toilet. I asked the same man where the toilet was. He replied “can’t you see the sign? It’s upstairs”. I hadn’t seen the sign as it was on the bottom of the stairs that he was directing me to. When my meal arrived it contained what suspiciously looked like chicken. I asked my partner to taste it as he isn’t vegan. He then asked the server (same guy again) if it was in fact chicken. He said yes and took it away. He wasn’t apologetic and didn’t seem to care at all. He returned with an alternative meal which I declined as I no longer trusted that it was even vegetarian let alone vegan. His attitude was rude. Now I am not a religious person but I have friends who are. I respect their ethics and the dietary choices that stem from them. Being a vegan is no different to being Jewish or Muslim or any other religion. For me it isn’t simply a diet or a fad, it’s my whole life as an animal lover. Apparently the chef is new (no excuse at all). My partner paid the bill as he and my children had all eaten their meals so I guess this review won’t have any bearing on the restaurant owners (and I wouldn’t return anyway as I was on holiday) but just a heads up for any vegans (or indeed vegetarians) out there…… this place does not respect you!

This was the worst meal I have ever had at an Indian restaurant the quality was poor and starter and main courses came at the same time , the pakora was tasteless and did not come with a dip , the service was shocking 45 min to an hour.one meal was too salty.

All the meals and sides I ordered were delicious and arrived on time. The only issue I had there wasn’t much meat in the Keema nans considering the price they are now. It was however a very tasty meal and I would probably order again.

Absolutely fantastic meal and service, always goes above and beyond to make the evening special. Food was delicious. Made my 50th birthday celebration a night to remember as they had organised along with my husband a special cake. Shame we don’t live closer. Raj always makes us feel welcomed.

We had a really disappointing takeaway from here. The tarka dal was extremely oily and had some hard grit in it. The curries were not pleasant. We felt like we had wasted a lot of money.

Feeling hungry after a day visiting the historic city of York we came across The Raj. The menu in the window looked tasty but not overwhelming, so we made a decision to try them out and we were not disappointed. We chose Imani lamb and the Raj special with pilau rice and naan. The meal was absolutely superb, just the right level of spice for us with wonderful flavours.Excellent service from the waiting staff who are very knowledgable about third menu. With two rounds of drinks our bill was very acceptable at under £60 so on our next return to York, we will be sure to return to the Raj
