Jaipur Spice in York

Me and my partner, were there last night, I had the prawn jalfrezy, my partner had a veg masala, both had onion bahgie as the starter, excellent food, and excellent service, friendly staff, would highly recommend it.

My first visit here and undecided if it will be my last. I was both happy and disappointed with the food. The good….. The curry (Chicken Balti) was excellent, the sag aloo - wonderful and the depth of flavour was something to behold. The average… The samosa filling was pretty good as far as fillings are concerned, what let it down unfortunately was the dough for the pastry. A massive miss, no crunch, not crispy and more like a shortcrust pastry. The bad… the garlic naan! To be honest, I feel as if it was mass produced in a factory. The other bad… the place was dead! We were the only customers at 8:00 p.m mid-week. I understand it’s after Christmas and people are recovering from this (financially and physically) but how about closing part of the restaurant to make it more intimate. Lower your lighting, light some candles but do something rather than nothing. Service was excellent but if it wasn’t, you would truly be scratching your head.

Lots of what we ordered was very similar. But we were trying to stay mild so we could share so probably just due to what we picked. Portions were large. The staff were brilliant. Had a lovely time.

Food nice but toilets and decor tired.

My wife and I had a takeaway meal and it was delicious 😋! The inside of the restaurant looks clean and well presented and gives the impression that the kitchens are also maintained to a good standard. I have lived in or near York most of my life and in my opinion this is one of the best places for Indian style cuisine.

We’ve used here for quite some time now, always been great apart from the past 2 times, thought we’d give it another go and my word the worst of yet, tasteless the whole lot, took 2 hours to come, chicken was dry, rice strangely didn’t taste like rice, naan bread was ridiculously thick, new owners? End of an era for us.

Always fantastic. Been a regular for years, York’s best kept secret. The staff are always brilliant, so welcoming, and the chapatis recommended by Russell tonight were exceptional!

It was a good time to spend in jaipur with my family really loved the environment and the foods were outstanding and the waiter(russel) is a good guy to be noticed which is very active and polite to the customers although it was a good experience for me and my family to spent quality time ..

My son has been coming here for years and wanted to write a review… As a 12 year old who has been coming here all my life, this place never gets old. From the vibrant music to the dreamy food. I would especially recommend the chicken Darjeeling. Special shout out to Russel the waiter, he is such a nice guy and it’s always a good time when he’s a round.

Amazing find within 10 minute walk our our hotel.

Other than being a touch quiet for a Saturday night, it was a great Indian restaurant for a couple of visitors to the city. Service (Russell) really attentive, food and portion sizes good and very reasonably priced.

Very ordinary Indian food especially the naan bread disappointing and expected better

Horrible chicken tikka, horrible means horrible. Fries and papodam was good. Tried spicy tikka naan pizza... it was good but for spice they had raw green chillies on top 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I used this car park while in York. I paid in the restaurant as I wanted to park for the whole weekend, they provided me a hand written ticket which I placed in my car and they told me this would be valid for the whole weekend. However, a week after returning home I received a penalty charge notice for not paying for parking in their car park, I contacted the restaurant but they were both rude and unhelpful in this matter. Avoid the car park at all costs, not worth the cheap rates as you will likely get a ticket anyway.

Shared the dish with my partner and we both had bad stomachs the next day. Had chicken bhuna, rice and garlic naan. Had many different orders from here previously so, disappointed.

We have been here many times, especially with big groups for special occasions - the food is always good and you can rely on the quality. The waiters are attentive and we appreciate that there is parking right outside the restaurant!

Overwhelmed by the variety of choices, I asked our waiter for a recommendation. I like spicy, I don't like nuts or mushrooms. He suggested a king prawn dansak, with a garlic naan. It was AMAZING. Absolutely melt-in-the-mouth perfect combo. Garlic naan really brought it the flavour in the sauce. Definitely worth a visit. Also, they have a little decorative fish pond, and the fish were cute.

What an amazing place for an Indian. The food was excellent and the the staff (especially my sever Rasel) was so considerate and friendly with our booking of over 40 people.

Takeaway - unfortunately everything was very stale. The poppadoms, naan and the onion bhajis were particularly bad. Very disappointing.

Mi esposo decidió pedir una comida para llevar a través de Uber eats, nos dieron un tiempo estimado para la entrega, pero siguió cambiando a los conductores que lo estaban recogiendo. Finalmente llegó, la salsa de yogur de bandeja de pepinillo era muy acuosa e insípida, pero los demás estaban bien. Pedí pollo tikka masala con keema naan y arroz especial para compartir. Mi salsa de tikka era muy, muy acuosa, pero sabía bien y comestible cuando se mezclaba con arroz, el naan no era naan, era un pan plano y no muy agradable y no había keema en o dentro de él. Mi marido estaba contento con su plato de balti. Esperemos que haya sido solo un fallo y lo intentaremos de nuevo.

Really good on all counts, food, portion size, service all great. Russell and colleagues all really attentive. Will return again.

I've been going here for 24 years, and have never had a bad meal or experience. It's my 8 year old daughter's favourite restaurant, and the rest of the family, including the in-laws, love it too. Vir is a kind and welcoming host who knows how to make everyone feel valued, and the food is always spot on. Don't miss it!

Pretty poor restaurant. It's quite expensive and the food is not the best. However the worst part of the place is the bar. It might be the biggest rip-off in York. £6 for a pint of lime in soda out of a Tesco plastic bottle. I've never felt more ripped off from a restaurant ever. Not worth visiting that's better places around.

This order was taken then not delivered as they stated they didnt have my full address even though it was paid on paypal .. ive never had this problem before and would like a refund and called them and cancelled the order but cannot do itbin the syst

Very poor this evening. Chicken was tough my tandoori chicken was burnt, only half a kebab, tiny naan and lime pickle missing from the pickle tray. Also the whole meal was only Luke warm.

Yummy our favourite curry in York - Chilli Garlic Chicken Balti and Dopiaza the best!

Ordered two takeaways tonight, Friday 30/10/2020. I ordered the Jaipur Spice Special Balti. It comes with a choice of rice and Keema bread. My dish was first class. There were loads of chicken, lamb, and prawns as well as onions, peppers, spices, and herbs in a thick curry sauce in either mild to hot your choice. My wife had the Chicken Tikka Masala, again loads of chunky chicken pieces in a thick creamy mild sauce. She said it was also 1st class. We can 100% recommend Jaipur Spice on Haxby Road York, we have eaten in the restaurant and had plenty of takeaways brilliant.

The food is hot, well cooked and always delivered with a smile. 😺

Although the service was ok, the food was very disappointing. We were sat at a table where we could see one of the workers stashing 50-60 poppadoms in an open storage unit in the back of the restaurant. (There were one 2 other tables in while were were there and they had already ordered). There is no way these would have been eaten that night. We ordered out curries and also a keema naan and a kulcha naan. Both came as very flat, perfectly round breads. No way on this earth they are cooked fresh in restaurant…. They are 100% shop bought in and warmed up here. Also the beef in the curry was 70%gristle and the remaining meat was tough as old boots. We mentioned all this to the waiter, who apologised and said he would have a word with the chef and said he had given us a discount to apologise ?not that we asked for one). The discount was for under £3.00, which really just wasn’t worth the effort. Sadly we have been put off enough to say we will never be going back for a second chance.

We were pretty disappointed in this place. We ordered vegetable balti and it was just onion and pepper we also had the ‘special Juipur’ and it said chicken, prawn and mushroom but there was another red meat in here. When I asked the waiter said ‘so you don’t like meat’ in a condescending way, I just pointed out you should say that it’s goat as well on the menu. He said he’d check with the chef and never came back. Decidedly average and would not go back.

Wow great curry, fast delivery, tasty food and friendly delivery from the restaurant ! What’s not to like?

We entertained two old friends from Scotland whilst they are staying in York and as always, the food and service was excellent !

Took 1hr 40 for food to be delivered Mixed platter was open in the bag so food was everywhere Balti was half full and genuinly the most bland thing i have ever eaten. So disapointed will never be ordering from here again

We went as a party of four and were all impressed by the atmosphere of the place as for the food we all had different dishes and we all agreed that it looked and tasted absolutely delicious the staff were all very polite and friendly thank you all for a wonderful experience and beautiful food I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to enjoy a good night out.

We were looking for a new Indian restaurant in York and this one kept popping up. First impressions were good, staff all looked smart and were welcoming, and we were surprised by how big the restaurant was. They did have a fountain/water feature in the middle of the restaurant which I thought was a nice touch, but it didn't seem to be working properly. We went at 8.30 and the restaurant was pretty empty which surprised me, however I thought maybe it had been busier early on. We ordered a beer each, a starter each, a main each, a rice to share, a naan each and 4 poppadoms with a pickle tray. The pickle tray was pretty poor, but the mango chutney was nice. For starters we had chicken chaat and roti chingry. Both were nice and it was the first time I had tried a puri, and I really enjoyed that. For mains we had the machli palak, however I thought it strange that they asked me if I knew it was fish when I ordered. The fish was really nice as was the sauce, and the portion size seemed huge. My husband ordered the mixed grill, and enjoyed it, but felt that there could have been more of the mutton. I don't normally like lamb, but I tried a tiny bit of the mutton, and it was cooked really well, and was quite enjoyable. Both naan breads were really nice, and the rice was also fine. The staff seemed attentive and we're happy to have a chat at the table when we asked them what the Puri was as we enjoyed it. Overall was a really nice meal, but feel that the atmosphere might feel a bit better when it is busier.

Food is very nice I’ll start with a positive. Service was very bad In contradiction to our previous visits the service tonight can only be described as poor. A poe faced female ushered us without comment to a table, she then whispered the question if we wanted a drink. We both have great hearing but neither of us could hear her. We asked for two popadoms and they were bought to the table with an unrequested pickle tray. We moved the pickle tray aside and thought no more about it. Imagine my surprise then when presented with the bill I’m being charged £2.80 for the tray I didn’t request, surely this should be included in the cost of the popadoms? The lad at the til who although was trying, clearly didn’t have a good enough grasp of English to deal with my query. He kept pointing at the bill and saying the total. The rest of the staff were busy tucking into the staff meal at the other side of the restaurant. Very unprofessional. I paid as by this point I was incensed. They should also train their staff on table manners. You don’t part clear a table when one member of the party is still eating. We had to wave for the attention of a staff member to ask if we could order as we had been sat there ten minutes. Including us, there were six diners so hardly rushed off their feet. A waiter approached our table to take our order but his hands were covered in what can only be described as bright red washing up gloves. He didn’t look at us directly but more at his colleagues dotted round the restaurant chatting. We are friendly with the management of this restaurant and noticed neither he nor his father were in attendance maybe this contributed to the poor service. Such a shame because on a good night this place is great and I have previously written a review praising the place. I emailed the restaurant a week ago with my concerns and have had no contact with them which has led to this review

I was notified after the order was fully made and paid for there would be a further 30mins wait. The meal was fine however far too much sauce on this occasion with the chicken. Not your usual great meal.

Unfortunately the poppadoms were not included with the order although the pickle tray was. The poppadoms were listed on the receipt. Perhaps this could be rectified on our next order?

We went tonight for the first time ever and can't wait to go back. The service, atmosphere and food were outstanding. If you're thinking of ordering we highly recommend but we would definitely recommend making a night of it and visiting the restaurant and eating there. Such a lovely place. Staff couldn't do enough for us. Thanks so much for making a lovely evening even better.

The order took 1 hour 45 minutes to arrive, 25 minutes late. The food was cold once it finally arrived. Won't be ordering again from Jaipur Spice or Just Eat as very disappointed.

Delivered exactly on time which was great as was for a family birthday party. Unfortunately most of the food was inedible. Ordered Butter Chicken and Chicken Tikka Masala. Both tasted very bland, which is not the worst thing as both are mild curries, but they also tasted like they had both had a bag of sugar tipped into them. Never had a sugar based chicken tikka before - it was horrible! Had to throw Chicken Tikka Masala away and mix the side into the Butter Chicken curry to help it taste better. Decided best to then order chinese food for the party. Shame not edible.

The food was out of this world, so tasty and delicious!! Although it was about five or ten minutes past the expected time, still very hot and tasted wonderful, definitely ordering again!

Best curry ive ever had.... wether takeaway or eat in it will just be perfect ! its that simple. 4 years ago visited york and had a meal there in restaurant and was amazing..... then last year we went away in caravan and ordered a take out from there and the quality and taste hadnt faultered at all now thats amazing well done Jaipur spice you are the curry kings

Ordered for delivery at 1910, turned up at 1835. Food was already quite cold and extremely greasy. Poppadoms were also largely smashed.

We ordered on a whim between Christmas and the New Year, and the curries were delicious especially the lamb one. The weather was dreadful but the delivery was on time. :)

The food arrived 45 minutes later than suggested and wasn’t hot on arrival.

Pre ordered so it would arrive on time, messaged me to tell me it was running late. Was showing eta would be 10 minutes late , when food was 30 minutes late it was still showing that it would be only 10 minutes late, very poor communication. After messaging them it finally turned up 40 minutes late. Food was warm at best, chicken was very large chunks and chewy. A poor experience overall.

My food was tasty. However, I was missing the poppadoms that I ordered and the chicken tikka pizza arrived and was completely folded in half and looked like it had been thrown in the box.

First of all this has nothing to do either with Jaipur or even with Indian food that tastes any close to Indian food. The recipes have been completely twisted maybe to suit local taste bud. So, if you are looking for an Indian food with an Indian taste, don’t get fooled by the name. Also, interms of hygiene, I wouldn’t rate them any good.
