The Raj in Swindon

Booked this on a spur of the moment since we were staying at the Village Hotel across the way. What an excellent meal we had. Started with Meat samosas and chick pea samosas. These came and were delicious, unfortunately for us the portion sizes were large and my wife could not finish the chick pea starter. This was followed with a Lamb Bhuna and a Lamb Madras with mushroom rice and peshwari naan. The lamb in both dishes was cooked to perfection and both dishes were excellent. The naan was also very tasty and I needed that as my madras was a bit on the hot side. My only issue was the fact that they automatically added a 10% service charge to the bill, but even given that, it was reasonably priced as we all had. could of drinks with the meal. Highly recommended if you are in the area.

The food was too oily and salty. We ordered chicken biryani, Tandoori prawns, chicken lollipops, butter chicken with naans. after having food yesterday, our tummy started aching and we ended up running to the toilet again and again. I would advise anyone not to go to that place my experience was very bad

To celebrate my birthday we decided to have a take away. From start to finish the ordering worked well. The food was delicious and well cooked. The whole occasion was wonderful with thanks to the RAJ

This is are local restaurant which is up and down with food and service but tonight on 31/08/24 is not just my bad experience but probably the worst I have ever experienced. There is only one gentleman that tries his best but the staff and atmosphere in there is shocking the staff seem to not want to work or do more than the other. when we walked in we went to the bar and it was partly full of glasses as the evening went on the bar got crowded more and more with glasses not one glass was cleaned and im 95% sure I seen a member of staff get a used pint glass and fill it up for another customer. when I went to pay the bill I said to the lady behind the till the manager about it as she had gone behind the bar 3 times to my knowledge looked at the mess and walked away when I said to her about this and how disgusting it was she just laughed. If this is what's on show to the public what's it like in the kitchen????

Came here after the cinema, never been before. The staff were so helpful, especially as we couldn’t decide where to sit! The restaurant is a big room with lots of tables all around, not much decor but there was a really nice relaxed atmosphere with a warmth. The waiter then offered us a perfect table, over in a neat corner. It wasn’t full, but busy with people coming and going and plenty of orders going out the door! We ordered drinks quickly and then studied the menu! The waiters never hassled us to order-a. bugbear of mine is pesky waiters! We ordered a Passanda and a Biryani. Along with naan bread and onion bhajis and pilau rice. It arrived at the perfect time and it certainly looked delicious and smelt even better! It was absolutely gorgeous-everything was gorgeous!! Despite it being the best curry I’ve had in a long long time, we could not eat it all and took home almost half of it to have the next night! The next night it tasted even better!! The Raj was fabulous and we will deffo be back for more of their fabulous and utterly scrumptious food!! Thank you The Raj for a lovely lovely evening!

We have visited many Indian Restaurants over the years in many locations, but I have felt compelled to write a review about our recent visit to the Raj, West Swindon. Firstly, the food was good and beautifully presented. Sadly, the chef was let down by a team of waiting staff who seemed to wish they were elsewhere. Service was poor and the staff disinterested, despite the restaurant being only half full. I suspect most customers order takeaway, judging by the stream of collections. We watched as many customers and including us were served main courses while the empty plates were still on the table from the earlier course. Wrong drinks delivered and no one asked or checked if our meal was ok. Another customer accidently dropped a pickle dish. I noticed a couple of waiting staff witness this happen and then clearly turn around and ignore the mess on the floor. Shortly after, a waiter took the customer’s order while at the same time making sure their shoes didn’t end up in the sticky mess. This is while a second waiter was happily cleaning the floor under a recently vacated table with a mop. In the end the poor customer used his napkin to wipe the floor. You couldn’t make this up. I appreciate all restaurants experience wear and tear on their furnishings, but leaving large, unusual stains on fabric chairs is a no. I expect no one has tried to clean them. The chef is wasted here.

It was the first time I had tried Indian food so I feel that my review about the taste of the food is totally subjunctive. I had take away rice which was very well prepared and a creamy curry chicken which was to my liking and taste as proposed by the manager. The place looked tidy and clean and the waiters looked very nice while I was waiting for my order. My special thanks to the manager who showed understanding for my pennies. ধন্যবাদ.

Just had our first takeaway from here - tikka masala, Patia & meat platter, naan breads, egg rice & plain rice. Gorgeous. Hot. Generous portions. Ready on time. Very happy tummies. We usually only go to the Biplob but we will definitely be back to The Raj & it will be soon. Excellent quality.

Made a booking for 11 at an hours notice this week, lest we be subject to the plastic food on the Swindon holiday inn express… Can’t speak highly enough of this place, accommodated us, food excellent. All piping hot, meat tender… what more can I say other than.. thanks guys… and well done ✅✅

Came here as was staying in nearby hotel. Slight canteen feel as we went in as restaurant is large and seating is dated in my opinion. Man who put menus on table wasn’t particularly friendly but man who took our order who we assumed was the manager was very nice. Drinks arrived after the starters! Curry was tasty with a fair portion size we thought the Naan bread would have been larger than it was! We did think overall it was quite expensive. We enjoyed our food and may return. Would recommend.

I usually eat in this restaurant and it has always delivered fantastic food, excellent and friendly service in a friendly environment. Today I decided to try a collect. The ordering process was easy. The email confirmation of order stated 20 mins wait. I pitched up in 18 mins - it was ready. When I got home the food was hot and delicious. No loss in quality.

Excellent! I've eaten at their sister restaurant the Bhurj Swindon too - also fantastic. The chicken lollipops are a must have, but I haven't eaten a single thing there I didn't thoroughly enjoy. And the mango kulfi is really creamy and flavourful. 10/10 recommend!

Even though this is walking distance from our home we don’t go here enough but after the latest meal we had, we will definitely visit more often. My son had the tandoori mixed grill, my wife had the passanda and I had the butter chicken done to a madras strength and all was amazing. Reasonable prices too and great service but the curries are so tasty that I will be recommending this place to friends and family.

Visited with family members who were staying at a nearby hotel. The restaurant was very busy and noisy. The food was average. Portions were good. Waiting staff were very busy and we had to ask several times for tap water.

No flavour, bland food. The restaurant was freezing and the waiter argued with us and other tables that the heating was on when it wasn’t. Stay away from the chicken tikka masala!!!

We have visited the Raj several times and it’s our favourite spot for lunch. The food is always tasty and fresh and the service is always excellent . My husband’s favourite is the Tandori mixed grill. Thank you for a great visit as always

Located a short walk from the Village Hotel where we have been staying, we decided to visit the Raj for an early evening meal. Although a little more pricy than our local Indian restaurants, we could not fault the quality and presentation of the food we ordered. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the area.

Easily the best Indian in Swindon. Have eaten in the restaurant and had takeaway from this establishment many times now. Food amazing, staff attentive... nothing is too much trouble. Have recommended to family and friends of which none have been disappointed.. Definitely our 'go to' place for true authentic Indian food.

Stopped off on a whim on the way home from a day out. Was a busy Saturday night & some tables were rowdy. Service was slow but all was forgiven when the food arrived because it was absolutely delicious. 4 different main courses, rice and breads, all of it excellent. Hope to be back sometime.

Wouldn’t return. Very expensive for the quality of food we received. Staff pleasant though and polite. changed my starter which wasn’t edible. The main was better but chewy chicken - just can get better for your money elsewhere.

Well this has been my first and last visit here. Food took an hour to arrive and when we got it it was mediocre, warm not hot and all a bit meh. Sag aloo was probably the best out of the five dishes. Tikka masala was thick with cream and very heavy really didn’t like it. Was waiting so long our drinks were empty and had to several times call for a waiter. I nearly rang the restaurant from our table for service. Sorry but never again!!!!

Curry arrived so liquefied it was like soup with chicken bits in. Mint Yogurt dip was awful had such a funny taste! We couldn’t eat it. After spending over £50 on just two of us it was most definitely disappointing. Would never buy again!

Live near but never visited much but that has all changed. Had takeaway last night and it was the best we ever had. Food and flavours were excellent and thoroughly enjoyed. The Raj will now be our go to restaurant. Definitely recommend.
