I've been here a few times since it opened but this was the first time for about a year. The food was very good but for a Saturday night the place was empty: no more than 2 tables being used at a time during the whole time we were there, although it did do a steady trade in carry-outs. Even although it was quiet the service was less than attentive. There were 2 waiters and someone who appeared to be the manager but who seemed to do very little. We were not made to feel welcome. The food was very good, not too spicy hot like I find with some restaurants. It's such a shame about the atmosphere and service and I wonder why it was so quiet.

Visited on my own on a Monday evening. The restaurant was quiet. I ordered vegetable pakora - 4 pieces came with a bland yogurt dip. I asked for some chilli sauce and that was brought to the table quickly. I followed the pakora with lamb karahi and a chapati. The lamb dish was excellent - the lamb tender and the sauce of onions and peppers and chilli very tasty. I had a glass of tap water and the bill came to just over £15. Service was efficient and friendly. I would visit again.

The Raj has had varied reviews of late but the night I went all was good. The pace of service was to my liking and the food was well prepared and tasty. Some of the familiar faces (of staff) from previous visits were not there but the new staff were very friendly and efficient. Certainly the best sit down curry experience in this part of Edinburgh.

When I came here last year it seemed more professionally run. Our welcome was slow. Service was slow and food was okay. It used to be buzzing on weekend nights but it has definitely changed. One of the things that used to make it different was the trolley that came round after the meal with complimentary sweets and coffee but no more. We weren't even offered coffee or desserts to pay for. Disappointing.

We called in at the Raj just by chance, on the way home to Fife after quite a difficult day in Edinburgh. It was actually St Valentine's Day, but we had not had time to make a booking anywhere. We used to come here as a family every 2-3 weeks. They did a wonderful buffet on a Sunday & Monday. They no longer do a buffet and when we asked the new staff why not they couldn't tell us. One of the great things about The Raj previously was the wonderful attentive staff - you always felt like you were being welcomed back by old friends - but everyone has changed (and we're not sure what the front of house staff did before this but it certainly wasn't in the restaurant business!) - they literally can't even show you to a table - they just jerk a hand in the general direction. We did ask if it was under new management but never got an answer.

Had a table booked for six people at 7.30pm. Arrived at 7.20 and there was no indication from the staff that they were aware of our booking and we were asked to sit on a bench. When the table was finally indicated to us there were only four place settings on it. When the rest of the party arrived it took a long time to ask for our food order. The food was ordered but it took an hour for the main course to be served. I asked for a side plate for my starter and was given a plate which had left over bits of rice on it. The food was lukewarm and not entirely what we ordered. The rice dishes were in the wrong quantity and there was too much nan bread. After we had finished the meal there was no attempt to clear our table and we had to ask for it to be cleared. We gave up on asking for coffee and asked for the bill. We had to ask three times for the bill before it eventually came. We spoke to the waiter to ask if things had changed in the restaurant regarding ownership and staff and he indicated that nothing had changed. We complained about the service and the guy looked as if he didn't understand or care. We eventually paid the bill and left without leaving a tip. This establishment used to be a favourite of mine but it has changed for the worst and I was embarrassed to have taken anybody there tonight. I will not be back.

We e eaten here before and had a great experience so we thought this would make a good change for Christmas. BIG MISTAKE. The food was ok but what let our exoerien e down was the service. The staff simply weren't interested and it took all the pleasure out of our experience. Thwre were only three parties in during our meal but we were all sitting in adjacent tables which is my pet hate. I know it makes it easier for staff to group parties but this is not the biggest restaurant in the world. An average meal let down by poor service, hence the poor rating.

What is going on at the Raj? I’ve eaten here over a dozen times since they moved to Blackhall and the food has always been hot, spicy, succulent and priced very reasonably. However,my last two visits while the food quality was fine the taste has gone! The Birmingham Balti used to be hot and full flavoured, now it’s totally bland. We had a Bhuna and a Balti takeaway this week and they were absolutely identical to look at and to taste. (Both more like an Italian tomato chicken stew rather than curry). Nan breads and rice are still great but please locate those missing spices!

Good service with knowledgeable waiters of the extensive menu ( which I had checked on line at time of booking). Starters were the usual varied Indian starters & very tasty. The mains were well presented and good portion sizes. I like hot but Madras & Vindaloo were not as hot as I like but very tasty. The meat was succulent & tender as with all the dishes. Came midweek for a family dinner. Wasn't empty but a few filled tables. We had mixed starter for four. Comprised pakora, mimi samosas, chicken legs, deep fried goujon style chicken and some dips and salad. Was filling, tasty and varied. My man n course was tandoori mixed grill. Lamb, beef, chicken and salad with a naan. Was nicely done with a supplied warm salad CEO and salad. Fellow diners had lamb biryanis with keema naans (and salad). All heartily enjoyed. We got free mini cakes as a dessert. Lovely and homely service. It's my local and I can me here as much for the friendliness as for the food. All good.

Have been a couple of times, all of the food has been very tasty and well cooked. Each curry was completely different and all the portions were a good size. An added bonus was complimentory dessert, coffee and liquor at the end, even if the sharing dessert plate was one of the most random things I have ever seen (toast, canned fruit, selection of indian sweets and whipped cream). Decided to give this restaurant a try as we were fed up having to go into town each time we fancied a curry. This restaurant is very close to our home and also on the bus route should everyone want alcohol. The initial meet and greet went well, good bunch of guys, very welcoming .Much appreciated on a cold rainy Sunday night. The food ? i felt my Chicken Madras was chicken with a hot curry sauce poured over it . Other Madras ive had is hot and tasty, this was just hot tasting.A big no no for me is the chicken. When a restaurant dealing in Indian cuisine covers your dish in the sauce of your choice you have to put complete trust in the dish in that there is no dodgy chicken pieces as you cant see it.Twice I put the dish into my mouth only to pull out dodgy jelly/bone/gizzard chicken pieces which i had to pull from my mouth and place on a side dish. This made me uneasy at what the rest may contain.Looks like its back into the town to my trusted restsurant for me.Shame really, this restaurant had great potential

We had dined at the old Raj in Leith previously and decided to try the new restaurant for a takeaway. They mistakenly gave our meal to another customer then proceeded to argue amongst themselves in the middle of a busy dining room and when we eventually got home to eat our dinner we were disappointed by the thin watery sauces that pretended to be curries and claggy pilau rice. I cannot recommend the Raj on any level.

Visited on a Saturday night and restaurant was very busy but competently staffed. Very reasonably priced for excellent Madras and Bhuna dishes. Was slightly concerned that the spices may have been toned down to accommodate the rather genteel part of Edinburgh the restaurant is located in but worries unfounded. Great flavours and spice and great meal - service excellent, only item holding back an overall "excellent" was the vegetable pakora and the relish tray. Both rather lacklustre and uninteresting. Best avoid these,

It was very busy with a mixture of families and couples and there are perhaps a few too many tables crammed into the space available. The menu is fairly standard but the food was delicious. We shared Chicken Balti, Sag Paneer, Sag Alo and boiled rice. Everything was delicious and very fresh, the chicken beautifully tender. Following that they brought us complimentary sweets and liqueurs. A decent selection of liqueur too and generous measures. A very welcome addition to this little part of Blackhall.

We have enjoyed many meals at the Ronaq both in Market Street and in Comely Bank, but I am afraid our experience on Sunday evening was terrible. My husband had the fish tikka and after eating we headed for the bus. On travelling back home he became really ill, burning and sickness. When we did manage to get home he was sick all night and most of Sunday. Don’t know what has happened to this restaurant but I definitely won’t return. I called the Manager on Monday to raise a complaint but it was as though he wasn’t interested. There are better places to eat in Edinburgh. Shocking.
