I had a great experience of this restaurant. Specifically staff was very friendly and humble kind persons. I took an Indian food and the taste was brilliant.

Being a vegetarian the food was absolutely amazing. I had a buffet for GBP 15 which was worth it. I would recommend everyone in Edinburgh to give it a shot.

I been there for first time yesterday at 9:20pm . I feel unwelcome. Also we wait for 20min to give the order even the there was no customers. Service was so bad . Food was tasteless I order paneer kadai and masala dosa. Dont waste your money and time. Food was really horrible. One suggestion from, please if you really taste something good from a restaurant, then this is not the one. Rather than choosing this restaurant, you can stay with hunger

Food was excellent, so was the service. The atmosphere was welcoming. All in all a great evening. We’ll be back.

It was quiet as it was only 6.30pm, food was delicious, only thing wrong they did not do coffee it was a very cold night.

Place is nice, beautiful, clean and location is central. Staff are very good and polite. Food is just mediocre. Dosa is soft and not at all crispy like how authentic dosa is supposed to be. Sambhar quantity and taste were poor. Overall a below average experience. We've had way better dosa for half the price in other Scottish restaurants so comparatively poor taste. Not sure about other food items as we didn't feel like ordering anything else after dosa fiasco.

Went to the buffet today with my wife and my mum. Very nice atmosphere, received a warm greeting and the food was excellent.

Charged extra for paying in credit card instead of cash !!! Food changed on the second order of the same thali/ dish !! Old restaurant lost it's previous image and chefs.

Disappointed after visiting this restaurant for 25 years, it is nothing like it used to be. Food was served luke-warm, service was sloppy, we had to ask for our cutlery.

I, a novice at Indian cuisine, had the opportunity, together with my friends, to be guests of a family who offered us a lunch based on Indian vegetable cuisine at this restaurant. The dishes were a real riot of flavors and aromas, they truly surprised and delighted us. The staff was friendly and very helpful, ready to explain each course and advise us on the best choices. The welcoming atmosphere made the experience even more pleasant, allowing us to approach this wonderful cuisine with enthusiasm.

Upon knowing we were vegan, the owner immediately went into the kitchen to ask the chef to prepare vegan dal for us as a replacement for Dal Makhni which was a part of the lunch buffet. Went to lunch with my sister. The staff was so attentive and kind! We are vegan, so in addition to the vegan curry options at the lunch buffet, the staff prepared us a supplementary curry to compensate for the one non vegan curry in the buffet we couldn’t eat. They also kept checking in on us and replenishing our water. The price is also so low for such delicious food that is all you can eat! Will definitely be back!

Well done! I often visit Kalpna on Sundays to enjoy their buffet. For just 13 pounds, students can indulge in an unlimited buffet with a wide variety of options. I highly recommend trying their buffet at least once. While I haven't tried their a la carte menu, I have heard that their thalis at night are a bit pricey. However, the quantity is generous and the food is delicious, making it worth the price. Overall, it's a great dining restaurant 💫🩵

Mid range prices should match a mid range experience. The portioning was poor, taste was average. But the absolute worst was having rock solid ingredients in the food that could have caused serious consequences. It's as if the owners just don't care anymore. There are much better Indian restaurants in town. Would not recommend.

We ordered Muglai veg Biryani from here with great expectations. What we found shocking was the pick up from the restaurant was costing more 20% than Uber eats price. This is absolutely irrational. Then it was found the quantity was very less as compared to the price they charged, they gave portion which resembled a side ish. What was most disgusting in all of this was the previously cooked rice was fried and given as Muglai veg Biryani. The dish given to us was no where near Veg Biryani. I would not recommend anyone to go to this place if u want to have good Indian food, it fails miserably on all fronts.

Terrible food. Out of this big thali, only 2 dishes were just barely okay. 2 dishes seemed stale and not even fit for eating. Avoid !!

Came to the restaurant as it's mentioned it closes at 23:00 in Google maps with a sponsored ad. They have a tag of closed on the door at 22:30.

We have been visiting this restaurant for many years each time we visit Edinburgh from the Midlands. It has always been our 'goto' place. It seemed this time food quality was tad bit less than what we have experienced before, but maybe we can leave that to one off occurance hopefully. We did have to ask few times for things like serving spoons and plates. Having food delivered on the table with no spoons to serve from and then to try and get attention off a waiter does disrupt a quite meal experience. I'll take the view that maybe we came at a very busy time. Also, maybe the area of location dictates the prices, but did seem rather high this time compared to all other places I have travelled to for Indian meals. Was surprised as an Indian restaurant it didn't serve Masala Chai, but maybe it isn't in demand in the area. Staff were friendly as always have been. Choice of food is great for both adults and young children. Hope my review doesn't get seen as negative, and I certainly will take the opportunity to visit again if I am in the area again.

The best experience, I have about the indian food(Vegetarian). It was completely like the indian food. We all friends enjoyed it a lot. We get everything according to our expectations. I really recommend it for vegetarian food.

I had an exceptional dining experience at KALPANA restaurant  last night! The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with attentive and knowledgeable staff. The food was absolutely delicious, with each dish expertly prepared and presented. I particularly enjoyed the "thali", which was cooked to perfection. The service was top-notch, with our server going above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed. The prices were very reasonable, especially considering the high quality of the food and service. I would highly recommend KALPANA to anyone looking for a great dining experience. We can't wait to come back and try more of the menu! Will we return? Absolutely!"

I don’t give out bad reviews unless I’ve had an horrible experience. This was one of them. A long day travel from Inverness to Edinburgh and we came here for dinner looking at the reviews but this was the most disappointing experience from our whole trip. Ordered 3 Thali for around £26 each and a Mughalai briyani and some starters. Starters were decent but nothing great. The thali and the Briyani were the horrible. They think they can fool the customers with presentation but not everyone will believe it. More than 90% of the items on the Thali were either cooked for lunch or even earlier. They were reheated and given without a doubt. The mughalai briyani was requested to be made spicy, which they did but understood it was done only to cover up the foul smell and it tasted bland. The total bill was around £110 and we were extremely disappointed on the way back home. To top it all, the four of us had stomach trouble this morning and struggled with it on the way back home. I wouldn’t bother coming here again and it was such a waste of money and time. Just try to be honest and respectful to your customers if you wish to continue being in the food business!

Sadly the food is the most inauthentic Indian I have ever tasted, devoid of actual spices. While it looks like the real deal, the lack of taste is a total surprise. The price js also way above what the food quality is. Avoid!

Best Indian restaurant in Edinburgh.. I know my Indian food taste, I must say preparation was truly Indian, portion size was good. One might think prices are high but overall portion sizes are bigger compared to other places.. Must visit places for Indian food.

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone looking for authentic Indian food. While the presentation of the Thali is great, all the gravies tasted similar — probably a common tomato base. They were devoid of any real spice or distinct flavour. It really wasn't worth the 70GBP spent here. Would suggest heading down the street to the other Indian restaurant (much, much better!)

Truly thee most disgusting, disappointing over-priced “food” I have had the misfortune to sit down to AND they added a whopping 12.5% service charge to the bill!! I had the so-called special which was basically three minuscule potatoes with frozen veg wrapped inside. I’m currently suffering from the worst heartburn too. My friend had a plate of frozen veg covered in gloop whilst my other two friends had…..well… more frozen veg and tons of cream. We had water with our meal. What a price to pay for a huge disappointment. Never again.

Shattered glass on the way in. Front sign said closed, the staff had just forgotten to turn it around. Could see why, they seemed least bothered upon visit. Tables had visible cracks (glass) on them. Plates and dishes hadn’t been picked up after people had left. Overall really bad experience. The staff were literally just sat on their phones on the other side.

Very nice food and ambience. I ordered the Archana thali. It was fulfilling and very tasty. Worth the price.

Great food, but service is a bit mediocre and the place feel pretty tired. And, disappointingly, the toilets seriously need a clean. Don't expect to be skipping through puddles. Not the place I remember from years ago.

Stopped by for lunch during our Edinburgh visit and ordered their Rajbhog Thali. Disappointed with the overall food experience. The curries did not taste fresh, the bread / roti seemed like microwave heated and we were given cut cabbage as salad. Not worth the price. I would not recommend this restaurant to my friends and family. The only positive was the Ambience.

Thanks for going out of way to serve IDLIs for our Child as she really wanted to eat it. Though the Idli was not on menu but specially prepared for her.

This was my favourite meal in Edinburgh and possibly the best food I’ve eaten in a long time! Everything tasted of love. The attention to detail was evident in the beautifully presented dishes. Authentic, traditionally cooked cuisine made by a bunch of smiling older men, I saw as I peeked through the kitchen door. I’m not vegetarian or vegan and I devoured every mouthful, the cauliflower dumplings, the masala dosa, the accompaniments, and the highlight the Saam Severa, recommended by our server and it tasted every bit as good as it looked. Two words, eat here. Enjoy!

Very bland food. No flavor. Salt was either too less or too much . Ordered “Archana thali” - finished it with great difficulty. Skip this one. Please don’t waste your money 🙏 Authentic Indian food is way too tastier than this.

Vegans and vegetarians! Come here. Try the delicious rice pancakes and curries. So delicious and beautifully seasoned. Wonderful.

The ambiance was really pleasant and the appetizers were quite tasty. However, the main course was only average in terms of flavor, and the service was satisfactory.

Best restaurant for Indian food lovers

So basically, i wasn’t aware you get served plastic with rice here. So that was new to begin with. The waiters didn’t seem to bother at all so must be a common finding. The food was terrible. We basically ordered Naan and Lachha paratha which was hard in texture and inedible. The chole was below average too. It was pretty expensive too to top it all. I have never had such bad experience with indian food so i would not advise anyone to visit this place unless you are a turtle and love eating plastics ofcourse.

Would not go again. Prices varied substantially from the menu (mains were 13.95 upwards instead of 9.95 on the website) and main portions were tiny consisting mostly of sauce. The menu only offered vegetable mains, but no vegetables as side dishes, so unless you ordered two mains setting you back at least £28, you ended up with main and bread or rice. We had two mains between two people. Once sauce was truly excellent (SAAM SAVERA) the other (DUM ALOO KASHMIRI) tasted strongly of tomato puree and sugar. The Dosa they offer is substantially sized and looked very good. Beer was 7.95 for a Cobra. Service was very friendly but took some time and did not come back to check for second orders, so we ended up skipping second drinks or lassi and left. The internor is lovely, beautiful decoration and very nicely done.

We found eating at Kalpna an odd experience. The food was tasty but the service was strange and inattentive, and it did detract from the overall experience.

The meal was unsatisfactory. The dosa was excessively thick and greasy, while the curries lacked freshness and appeal. The pricing seemed disproportionate to the quality. I would not recommend this restaurant.

Food was really bad. Ordered buttermilk which came with nearly 3 spoons of salt in it. Trying to poison us??! Ordered pulav, just rice mixed with oil and turmeric. No salt/ spice what so ever. When i say no, i am not exaggerating cause it was TASTELESS. Is the restaurant trying to shame us for stepping foot in there ? Worst experience ever, please skip this one.

Lovely unique ambience. Everything starting from the dining table to the wall decor were simply spectacular. The food was great tasting as well. We took the thali and enjoyed it.

We had to wait for over half an hour for the food. The waiter accidentally thew curry on my t-shirt, jaquet and trousers and theh did nothing to apologise or help me to clean it. I still had to pay for my food. They just could not care less despite we were a group of 11 people.

I won't suggest this restaurant for anyone else.

As a tourist to city, I visited this restaurant with family and tried vegetarian food. To my disappointment some of food is stale and too oily. Few other items are okayish. It’s too expensive and a pathetic experience overall.

We went in noon. It had only buffet option for lunch and had cash only option. The ambience is nice but service and food are on lower side. The food was very sweet and far from being authentic indian. Most items where cold and when requested staff to atleast serve hot, they werent happy and told us it was already hot. When insisted by few othet customers of same they reheat the food and served. We have been here after seeing its positive reviews but were very disappointed by the food and service. Wouldnt recommend. Would rather look for something really indian and serving fresh

A vegetarian delight in Edinburgh, a city where it becomes difficult to find cafes/restaurants serving only vegetarians option. The unlimited buffet lunch is best for a tourist, as it satisfies hunger for the entire day. The restaurant’s vision itself is to provide a comfortable space to all vegetarians especially Indians.

Food is tasty, freshly made. Friendly staff including the head chef Mr Pandey. Service can be a little more responsive. Definitely recommend. Menu had changed since our last visit.

Absolutely amazing food and great vibes

I went to the trip at Edinburg with my friends. We had dinner at kalpna restaurant. One of my friend had ask that are they making veg and non veg food separately? In response that white gentleman answered very rudely that 'you should know where you are having a food' hence we told him we were very first time at Edinburg. We asked for 3 different things (black paper powdy and food items) he literally denied us that they don't have , even though we had seen those same stuff on another table.( He probably seem like supervisor or manager) HE SHOULD KNOW HOW TO TREAT TO THE CUSTOMERS POLITELY

I had palak paneer without onion garlic here the first time I landed in Edinburgh. The curry was so authentic, it's safe to say that it's the best palak paneer I have ever had until now ( tried in US and India too). Overall food is great. Chef did a phenomenal job!! I ended up eating the curry 2 more times on different days!!

Had a lunch buffet, really delicious and authentic Indian vegetarian food. Khir was the most delicious, staff was very approachable. Overall a great experience must visit places. Best place for vegetarian people.

I can't begin to describe how bad the food was, honestly. We went here for lunch and truth be told , were lured into by a student discount. But the food was so bad. They had a paneer masala dish which was watery and very sour. It seemed that they had put sambar masala in it, which is a no-no for paneer butter masala. The dal was undercooked and without any tadka; very similar to what hospital food tastes like in India. And the aloo sabji was without any remarkable flavour, very ordinary. The only bit that was okay, was the kheer. And the service too was very slow and they didn't bother to offer us water either. We had to go and get it ourselves. Overall, wouldn't recommend this place at all. Sorry.
