they didn’t have many items on the menu…staff were eager to go home rather than serve customers..biryani @ 18.95 but only chicken was very pricey …overall very bad.:::

45 min sat at the table without getting served. Served later arrivals before us and they had food coming out to them before we even ordered. Servers ignored us when we asked for service. Servers stopped serving us in the middle of ordering to answer other customers. Servers tried to stop us from ordering because it was too much. ( 2 biriyanis really). Menu options were not available and there’s was no signs. Too cramped and constantly bumped into. The staff didn’t give a shit.

I would definitely eat here again. Place was packed. Service was quick. And staff was friendly.

Had lunch with my friend here yesterday. We ordered the 4ft Dosa to share and a couple of nibble plates. The food and service was fabulous. We took advantage of the BYOB perk too. Can highly recommend. We will certainly be back. The place was busy which is a great indication of how good it is.

We ordered a variety of dishes to explore the full range of their offerings. The Lamb Chettinad was a standout — beautifully spiced, tender, and rich in flavor. The Chicken Tanjore was equally impressive, with a unique mix of spices and perfectly cooked chicken that left us craving more. For sides, we had the Parotta and Bahtura, both of which were fresh, soft, and an excellent match for the curries. The veg curries were equally delightful, with a vibrant mix of vegetables cooked to perfection and perfectly balanced in flavor. Tanjor is our go-to place for having a traditional dosa, idli and sambar vada. It's pocket friendly. The staff has always been good. Overall the place has a good vibe and the food tastes delicious. It's a located at a good location in the Old town of Edinburgh, close to the Surgeon's hall so for sure gets a lot of footfall. We try to stick to the traditional South Indian fare.

El idlis nunca llegó en absoluto y el dosai logró ser mitad crujiente y mitad empapado con un chutney de coco bien frío. Espero que la dirección tome nota de esta revisión porque volveré esperando una mejor comida la próxima vez.

This restaurant is awful! The service is beyond poor. If I could rate them lower, I would. The restaurant was completely empty when me and my friends arrived, and it still took the waitress more than 30 minutes to come get our order. Not only that, but she never came and gave us more water. We always had to ask her to, even after putting the empty bottle at the end of the table. The food took over an hour to come out to our table, and when it arrived the portions were TINY, especially for the price (£15 for curry). The curries didn’t even come with rice, she charged us £4 for each order of rice. It was overpriced for below average tasting food that was too small of a portion to satisfy even a child’s appetite and the service was beyond horrendous. I just moved to Edinburgh, and I will NEVER be going back to Tanjore.

Los currys ni siquiera venían con arroz, ella nos cobró £ 4 por cada pedido de arroz. Fue sobrevalorado por alimentos de sabor inferior al promedio que eran demasiado pequeños para satisfacer incluso el apetito de un niño y el servicio era más que horrendo. Horrible experience. Waited to be served for about 15 mins. The lady manager was extremely rude. £42 pound for dosas didn’t seem worth it with the experience. 15 mins to be served in the sense to be acknowledged. Not serve food. We’re South Indians. And we know how long it can take to make dosas. We were sitting on the table without being asked even for a glass of water!!!! Paying for food is not something that I am concerned as long as it’s worth it. The restaurant is a nice homely one but the lady manager can change it all to making you feel not worth paying for!! The lady manager was extremely rude!!! It’s such a shame that the lady manager is not concerned about her own hospitality!!!!

The lady manager, who might also be the owner of the place, is extremely rude. It’s just not been my experience but also of my friends’. I ordered onion uttapam which wasn’t fully cooked. I understand that it’s a busy restaurant and I am okay to wait, but I cannot expect half cooked food after a long wait time. The rude manager spoilt the entire experience for us.

Tanjore restaurant was recommended to me as a good example of authentic South Indian cuisine. Overall, we liked the service and food here. It was the first time I tried dosa and I found the combination of a crepe and sourdough very interesting, although I felt a dosa with paneer had too little substance to be a main meal.

Go authentic or go home! This place is the best. Think Dishoom's good? Get yerselves to Tanjore and see what you *should* be eating.

Did a random walk to the restaurant and I did not have any expectations. But to my suprise, This is one of the best I have tried in Edinburgh for authentic south Indian restaurant. The ambur style Biriyani is amazing. My son like the panneer dosa. I would recommend this place if you want to taste the authentic south Indian food. The staff are so kind.

Excellent traditional southern Indian food that tastes as close as you can get to what you’d find in the region itself. Very reasonable prices and corkage only 75p/bottle. The villager curry was a standout as well as the paratha. Highly recommend.

I went to this place because I was craving for some South Indian food. It was amazing. I enjoyed every bite of what i ordered. Reasonable prices!

I had heard excellent reviews from others about this restaurant so I went in to get two dosas to takeaway. The waiter misheard my order and gave me the wrong meal, which I found out when I had already gotten home. I went back to get it fixed and the waiter said I was wrong multiple times and took my food after saying ‘I don’t think they’ll change it’ (also said multiple times). After that I was ignored for like 10 minutes even when i tried to get attention from other staff. They did thankfully change my order however i did not hear a sorry from anybody after saying apologising myself many times. I should have checked at the restaurant to see if they got my order right as when I returned home I did not get the right chutneys. Awful customer service won’t be returning (go to chennai’s marina down the road for some good dosa)

This was my second time here, and I can say their food is absolute delight. One of my favorite Indian food pick in Edinburgh.

Very good South Indian kitchen with some items on the menu you rarely find elsewhere. Curries particularly get a bit pricey quickly but you definitely get some quality taste for the price!

The best service and great food in Edinburgh

I recently visited Tanjore after about two years, expecting the same quality that impressed me during my last visit. Unfortunately, this time, it was quite disappointing. The ghee dosa was poorly executed, partially burnt in some areas while other parts were barely roasted, leaving a strange texture. To make matters worse, the Rava masala dosa was undercooked, and the batter had a sour taste. The masala inside lacked any real flavor and was rather bland, which was surprising given how much I enjoyed it in the past. I was hoping for a similar experience to my last visit, but sadly, this time around, it did not live up to expectations.

It’s a great place to have south Indian food in Edinburgh after a long day of sightseeing !! We had mini idli, Ghee Masala Dosa and Onion Uttapam. All of them were really very good.

Delicious dinner of dosas and mini idli sambar. Will absolutely come again. Main course in the range of £10-16 (higher end if you want lamb). Starters £3-6. Good portions! Left very happy ❤️ Only downside is that the service can be a little bit slow, takes a while to order and be brought the bill etc.

If you call it a street food centre than a restaurant it would be more appropriate. I will look at it as such because restaurants have high profile servicing which is not something Tanjore is designed for at the moment. The food is close to authentic south Indian food but not totally authentic. The place has a lot of potential to market well but I am not sure if the owners are down for it. The service given that it's in Edinburgh and on Clerk Street, is supposed to be a lot better than it is. But if that's the way it operates then it should not be called a restaurant. Can't operate a street food centre on the pretense of a restaurant.

We had been here today.Vada Sambar had only one vada almost 6 pounds..one chicken snack was fine but then we ordered 2 Biryani each was almost 18 pounds and quantity was very less..I could have gone to dishoom for this price and better quantity. So if you are going here order only vada sambar dosa etc

My friend and I visited Tanjore twice, and both times, we were treated poorly. The staff was unfriendly and unwelcoming. We weren't allowed to choose our table, and the one we were given was dirty.The food was mediocre at best, far from authentic South Indian cuisine, with shockingly small portions. Despite the low quality and quantity, the prices were outrageously high.Wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking for good food or decent service.

It’s really sad that I had worst experience twice when I visited this place. For the both times my friend and me were not given table of choice. The tables were dirty. When we requested for another table which just got vacant and had 2 locals siting there we were declined saying that that table was meant for 4 people. We got a table right next the door where we were feeling cold so we requested twice them to atleast close the door but they declined saying that it need to kept open. After getting upset with the treatment we decided to leave and we expressed our dissatisfaction to the owner but in return the owner YEELED at us by saying we did not treat them well.

First ever visit here. No smiles, no feeling of being welcomed. Very impersonal. Guy wouldn't even bring the card machine to my table. Instead I had to go to the counter to pay. Ordered a masala dosa that was average at best with parts of the dosa batter still uncooked. Potato filling had a weird taste. Just a very unwelcome vibe in an overrated place with overpriced food that's probably surviving on past reputation, some good days of the month, ignorant tourists and local edinburghers who are unable to make any distinction between bad and good south indian food. If this restaurant was in an Indian city, It would be blown away by the competition.

Si bien el restaurante es bastante básico, la comida era muy sabrosa e incluía algunas opciones diferentes de la fayre restaurante indio habitual - recomiendo probar las tortitas - Uthappam. No hay necesidad de reservar, solo tienes que aparecer y tomar su oportunidad.

Authentic and delicious south Indian food in Edinburgh! A no-nonsense approach to making tasty food. We loved the pudi dosa, malabar veg curry and the parotta! Staff were also really friendly. They didn't have sweet fare because of a reduced Fringe menu. But they said we can come back later this week and they'd make it for us ❤️ Definitely going back soon!

One of the best Indians I've ever had, far above any I've eaten in Spain (probably due to the large Indian community that exists in Great Britain). Highly recommended. We loved the flavors of all the dishes.

A friend recommended this restaurant to us, and we’re so glad she did. The food is excellent, unpretentious and filling. We enjoyed the dosa and fresh sodas, and will definitely return to try more food. Service was friendly but at times a little inattentive, but that’s the only downside we experienced.

Overall, the dining experience was quite satisfactory. The food was delicious and had authentic South Indian flavors. Some of their signature dishes include the Ambur Veg Biryani and the Mini Idli Sambar. One area where they could improve is their pricing, as it is slightly expensive. A person might end up spending around 20 pounds for just two dishes. Nevertheless, the quality of the food makes it worth the price. The staff was helpful and courteous. I would recommend visiting on weekdays, as weekends tend to have long waiting times.

Authentic Indian eatery in Edinburgh's Southside that came recommended by The Times restaurant critic - it did not disappoint. We shared a portion of South Indian fry - marinaded chicken that was so soft and packed with flavour you could eat it all day. Tanjore are famed for their dosas and you can see why. The garlic chilli chicken option was reeking of garlic (in a good way!) and was very moreish. I had the Chettinad-style chicken, which was equally as delicious. You could really taste those well balanced aromats and the sauce was deep and rich. The real highlight though was the super buttery parotta, which was one of the best breads I've ever eaten. Service was very friendly and efficient and it's also BYOB. Highly recommend.

We were excited to visit Tanjore after reading some of the reviews. We acknowledge that the restaurant was busy, but that wouldn't excuse the abysmal service and waiting time for food. While we are thankful that we got a table eventhough we didn't have a reservation, the experience was not great. I think it comes down to the restaurant being poorly staffed which isn't ideal for a busy environment. We waited for a long time to even get water and then waited more than an hour for food.The crammed up place was uncomfortable for having a good dinner. The portion sizes were extremely small, especially the biriyani and prices weren't fair for that portion. Malabar chicken curry and porotta were really tasty, but the biriyani and mysore dosa were a let down. I hope they improve their staffing and customer service in the future so that customers have a good experience. Edit : reply to owner - I am sure that you have confused me for someone else as I didn't have any children or elderly parents with me. If there is a cctv footage of what you have claimed , then that would be great to watch. As explained in my original post, I completely acknowledge that we didn't have a reservation and are thankful that we got a table , but yes ofcourse the staffing was poor. It would be worthwhile reflecting on the same and improving services rather than classifying an honest review as a " threat ". Also, we never told you that we would leave a negative review or thereaten you with anything and we are not even thinking of revisiting as we understand defense is the priority for your team rather than reflection. Please stick to the facts as your reply must have been directed towards someone else whom you have misunderstood for me. Thank you for your time.

It's disheartening to have to leave a negative review for a place we visit frequently. However, the recent experiences have left much to be desired. Last time we visited, we wanted to order a family dosa, we were discouraged explicitly since the table couldn't accommodate the dosa. We offered to have it folded on a single table since the place was busy, but weren't given the courtesy. This time, we got a table that could fit the family dosa. While serving, the chutney slipped and got splashed on our dresses. We understand that accidents happen. But the staff just avoided our table altogether after that. They apologized for the sake of it but remained unapologetic throughout. They couldn't bother to replace the spilt chutney or the tissues. It also feels as if they are not very keen on serving extra chutney even if we pay for it. The burnt dosa further compounded our disappointment and it got cold by the time we cleaned up the chutney splash. It was exacerbated by the absence of attention from the front of the house staff until the end of our meal. Although the staff waived charges for the additional chutneys and offered to replace the family dosa with a regular one, we declined. It's evident that the current staff lack the attentive service we once enjoyed under the previous staff. This decline in customer care is disheartening and likely dissuades repeat visits.

I had my first ever South-Indian thali and I totally loved. Glad i decided to give it a try. The thali set was wholesome - balanced with all the flavour; Tangy, Spicy, Sweet and what not. Highly recommended!! A must try when you are in Edinburgh. PS: I came back to give it a review, a month later from my visit because it feels like I owe a good review to this place. 🙌

During our Scotland visit we have try South Indian food and tanjore is perfect for it, truely authentic, we have visit twice and both time surya is welcomed us with smile and very polite as well, we have try Meduvada, mini idli with sambhar and paper dhosa and chai. Note: meduvada come with only coconut chutney not with sambhar, which I think need to do improvement, other wise food is very good. Shoutout for Bharat and surya.

100% enjoying the food. I had biryani( the one without coconut milk) and mango lassi. They are really tasteful. You have to wait for abit but its worth, believe me! One thing is salt lassi which has lots of spices and masala.

Hoy estuve allí para pedir un plato de chicken kurma/korma para llevar y estoy totalmente decepcionada. No repetiré jamás. Tras encargarlo y sin habérmelo entregado, el camarero ha venido a cobrarme; cuando le he preguntado que dónde estaba la comida me ha dicho que en un rato la sacaba. Cuando ha sacado el pedido, el envase presentaba una cantidad extremadamente escasa: cuatro trocitos de pollo con una gran cantidad de salsa, sin arroz ni vegetales ni nada de acompañamiento. Una auténtica vergüenza de sitio.

Love this place, even hesitated reviewing it. As it'll no doubt get even busier, good value and the food has a depth of flavour that's impressive. Byob as well, so it cuts the cost of a meal if indeed you fancy some booze. All in all, highly recommended. Book to be on the safe side

An excellent family run restaurant with some of the most delicious Indian food I’ve had. We were a large group and they were very accommodating. The Paneer Peas Masala Dosai was incredible and I can’t wait to return to have it again! Very large and filling portion with delicious dips. BYOB available.

We were heading towards some other restaurant, and luckily we entered here. He ordered multiple items, and all of them were amazing. We tried both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, particularly the biryani. It was so good that we ordered more to parcel out our dinner.

Avoid this place. So unhygienic don’t know when the laat time they washed those dirty glasses on table. Waited so long for our food and its came cold. I’ll Never ever go to such kind of place and will never suggest to orhers.
