Good portions, but slightly underwhelming spice levels.

The staff couldn’t have been nicer and more helpful despite it being a very busy Saturday night. Food was delicious, with sensible portions and we especially enjoyed the tandoori chicken.

This restaurant has been here for a VERY LONG TIME and we used to come regularly.We decided to give it another go.Dont get me wrong there was NOTHING wrong with the food but it didn't blow us away.It was nice and well presented.The staff were friendly and welcoming.The restaurant itself is nicely decorated.If you haven't been here before it's worth a visit.

Food and service were both excellent, although I would like to see more options for the main course. 3 courses, £8.95, so excellent value. Ordered the food to be cooked in ‘Desi style’ since I am from India, the waiter said “Dont Worry 👍🏽” and what came out was a bowl of water, the food didnt have any flavour or spices at all, all bland. The garlic naan was green? Can somebody explain how a garlic naan is green in color?

A big group of us with babies and a toddler went here for an early dinner and the service was absolutely spectacular. The food was excellent aswell. I had the Thali and my husband had the bhuna. Would recommend highly.

The restaurant staff and the manager were kinda rude as we didn't felt welcome at all... The staff stopped us after entering in the restaurant and said we need to wait while whole restaurant was empty... After waiting 5mins when nobody bothered to tell us where to sit.. We started to walk out of the restaurant and then the manager came and asked what happened? We told him that your staff need to learn some manners that how to deal with a customer. Instead of listening to us he told us to get aside so that other customers can leave the restaurant... He didn't even bothered to apologize for their rude behavior... We have been to so many restaurants in different countries never been treated like this... It was so disappointing and shocking as well... Felt really discriminated... We had some heated conversation with manager and tried to tell him that it's not a good way to treat customers but he didn't even bothered... We just went to another restaurant named "Rustom" right next to "Omar Khayyam". The staff of "Rustom" warmly welcomed us and immediately referred us to an empty table (despite of restaurant being busy). We will never visit Omar Khayyam again..

Fantastic place to eat a little expensive and the rice portions were a bit small but otherwise a really lovely place with great service and friendly staff.

Been here a few times over the years, but sad to report that whilst the prices have rocketed, the quality of the food has unmistakably declined. This is a bad combination.

They advertise lunch menu till 4.30 on website but false advertising won't be back due to this food decent but nothing special

Recently went here, over the weekend for a curry night with the fellas, service was outstanding food was great and it was a really nice atmosphere. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to book a Indian restaurant in Edinburgh.

Delicious food, quick service and friendly staff. When I'm back in Edinburgh next, I'll be back.

I visited this restaurant with a group, and the staff was accommodating regarding my dietary restrictions, providing all the necessary information. The food was flavorful, rich, and filling. I especially enjoyed the naan bread, which was twice the size of the plate it was served on. Overall, it was an excellent choice for Indian cuisine.

Normally eat here during the week but chose to come out tonight for a change not realising rugby on at Murrayfield. However, even although it was busy and a bit noisy, we once again enjoyed our food and felt the waiters did a wonderful job in coping with all the orders and service. Thank you.

I came there on 28th November after a year for my lunch. All staffs were very kind as usual. All meals were also very good as usual. After eating 3 course lunch, I had an extra Chai Tea. It was so nice. Looking forward to biding again. Thank you! On 1st October, my wife and I visited this restaurant for our lunch. All staffs and all meals were very good as usual. Today, we took 3 course lunch menu plus Chai tea. All meals and tea were very good. It was very comfortable restaurant. And all staff were very kind. Here’s an improved version of your review: We recently visited Omar Khayyam Restaurant. Although the atmosphere was okay, the food was disappointing, especially for anyone hoping to enjoy authentic Indian flavors. We ordered prawn biryani, paneer curry, and other main courses, but everything lacked taste—no spice, salt, or seasoning at all. When we expressed our concerns, the waiter replied, “Scottish people eat like this,” which wasn’t a helpful response. We do not recommend this restaurant, as it needs major improvements in food quality, service, and overall value for money.

Excellent place for dinner. Got right off the train for our reservation. Bhuna, garlic Naan, shashlick, lamb nahari. All amazing. Meat was so tender and juicy. Rice was perfect. Such a great place. Naz served us and was amazing, very friendly and accommodating. On po8nt and was fantastic to talk to. Will be coming here again!

Food was spilt all over the bag - less than half the sauce in each tub and restaurant not interested - I literally live a 5 min drive or cycle away and the food was like warm - very disappointing!

I requested the delivery at 18:00 and it arrived at 18:55 Half my saag paneer had leaked into the bag; chips were packed into a naan bag so were completely soggy; added extra sundries, while appreciated, tasted strange and veg was definitely old

Food was delicious but in thali too many carries not enough rice or bread. I ask for mix meat but no idea i got 2 vegetarian and 1 chicken & lamb.

The biryani was super flop it was just a tasteless rice with peas on top and no masala nothing so never order biryani from here but yea the nihari was very tempting was really good but again the biryani was a major fail

Quantity of starters was very less. Chicken biryani was tawa fried rice with minimal pieces of chicken and lots of peas and cucumber. God knows what kind of biryani was that. Naans were served in thin hot tin plates and naans touched the table because those plate sizes were too small compared to the size of the naans. Dal makhni and parathas were ok. Chicken karahi was ok too. Nothing great. Only reason we booked that place was for convenience because we wanted to eat Indian at Haymarket. Don’t know if we should have booked Rustom but after seeing Omar Khayyam I am not sure of Rustom too. Service was ok.

Staff very cooperative, accommodating

The server who took the order was totally unaware of the dishes. I ordered for vegetables vindhaloo and I asked what flavour was it and he was like it’s a different dish only. It was totally pathetic and waste of money and torture to my pallet. Later I went to nearby hotel and had good food.

It was amazing The food, the hospitality and lovely chit chat with the staff We ordered their 3 course lunch deal which had good options, especially the sauce that they give with appetizer Sweets were also different like pineapple/banana fritter for example The naan was amazing. I have never eaten naan which remains soft for longer minutes. If you looking for good Indian/pakistani food in Edinburgh it’s a nice place to go.

The restaurant has good ambience and good food choices. We ordered their standard 3 course meal thinking it's a popular choice and will be faster than other options. There was no water served after 20 minutes of wait, we asked and got 1 cup of water for a family. It took 35 minutes to get the starter, another 30 minutes to get the main course (Which was roti and sabji). We didn't have the time to wait for the last course (which was chai), we just left after the main course. Even though the food was good, service was the worst we received in our 1 week stay in Edinburgh. Surprisingly the other 3 tables who ordered after us, got their meals served much faster.

Small portions. Waiter stands staring at you as if you going to do a runner.. Food tasty enough. Would not hurry back.

Totally rubbish food. Namkeen ghosht recipe itself should not contain any red chilli but despite the special request to keep it mild, the delivered food was cooked in chilli and we were not even able to taste it properly. Stay away from this place if you are after traditional Desi food.

Food delicious as usual. Only snag, normally would have a SIDE of Bhindi Bhaji but on the menu was only available as a main for £9.95!

Service let this Restaurant down. We had booked our table for 4 for 8pm but were kept waiting for 20 mins. When we asked a waiter why, he replied" we are busy" We are returning customers, have visited this restaurant many times but this will be the last. Food was good and reasonably priced but service was poor. Order was wrong and was laughed off by the waiter with no offer to replace the meal with what was actually ordered. With such a variety of good restaurants in the Haymarket area to choose from. I will be looking for a new 'go to' place.

Heerlijk gegeten voor correct budget. Heel vriendelijke bediening met tips betreffende keuze zonder opdringerig te zijn. De 4 hoofdgerechten die we samen namen waren allemaal heel smaakvol. Heel uitgebreide keuze op de kaart. Ook de chutneys bij het aperitief waren heerlijk. 2 dagen eerder aten we bij de Indiër er vlak naast (R…om) en naar onze mening is Omar Khayyam veruit te verkiezen (zowel kwaliteit eten als vriendelijkheid personeel, budget is ongeveer gelijk).

Took my two visually impaired friends there for good filling meal. Have been there a few times in the past and it is nice to be recognised (by the owner) who was standing by the door, smartly dressed. The staff were very attentive to my friends, even though I could have done the helping/assisting. I've never seen that level of help (attentiveness) in all the restaurants we have dined in. Sometimes I think staff are wary of approaching blind people, maybe saying the wrong thing. We enjoyed our meals and did not have long to wait before the Popadoms & Pickle tray appeared on our table at the start.

The atmosphere is great! the people are very, very welcoming! They help you with your toddler, or may it be your parent in a wheelchair. the food is awesome. you should try the kebabs, the rotis and biryanis. even the owner came up to serve us. everyone is so humble. It's definitely a place to be in your wishlist if you want to try some South asian flavor! If you're to have Riju as your waiter, then you have an even better experience!

The atmosphere is normal, some of the food is delicious, some of it is tasteless, and on top of that, there is price manipulation, adding things that I don’t know what they are.

Very expensive and the portion is the smallest I ever had in any indian restaurant in the UK. I have tried plenty of well-known curry restaurants across the UK but I consider this the worst experience portion-wise and price-wise.

Chose this restaurant on a whim on Saturday. We were welcomed warmly, service was swift and attentive. The food was delicious. If we lived in Edinburgh we would be regular visitors.

This is pathetic restaurant We went there for lunch we were three of us first thing that the service manager was rude and was nagging the staff. next we placed order so when we received our order they just gave us the food in dishes n didn’t give us serving plates i asked them for plates then they gave us plates after that they didn’t provide us spoon we had to ask that as well and they didn’t even served us water we had to ask them. The food was waste in taste. This is really horrible don’t visit there

The waiter needs training on how to interact. The food is very ordinary and does not suit the place or the name at all Good luck but I'll not come again..

I had a chance to visit the place, had a bad experience as the staff wasn’t helpful and the food was average. Would recommend Rustom which is just next to it. Far better food and staff.

The order was not delivered. I missed the delivery phone call as I was driving. I stated cleary on the order to RING MAIN DOOR BELL I order frequently to this addressfor my son with only one problem before with the delivery. Please tell delivery man the instructions. Absolutely awful place, threw our food down on the counter for us, don’t know why?? , tried to overcharge ,when questioned we were offered a can of Coke, avoid this place, it’s no where near what you pay, walk down the road near the grassmarket, way better and far friendlier

Worst attitude from the people. Extremely rude Felt extremely humiliated with family. So much dra done by them before even order. The food order by themselves actually. Strongly advised not to enter this restaurant specifically with family. I think there is element of resism as well. My mum said after coming this restaurant that the people of this country is not good and don't know how to behave. These people not Scottish This was our last day of trip and ended upon this pathetic experience the rest of trip was Feb. I would strongly advice the person ( man with beard and red tie) who was attending us that he need to take some lessons how to behave or talk to other human beings.

Had a really bad experience. We were two people and ordered one main and a side as I didn’t have much appetite and didn’t want any food to go to waste. They refused to take our order saying that we must order two mains or leave. Being Muslim and travelling to the UK for the first time, options regarding halal food were already limited and this is the treatment that I received from them. I was extremely disappointed. Would not recommend at all.

We were seated and even quickly asked if we wanted poppadoms and dips. Soon after seeing menu we were asked for.drinks. My pina colada came quickly -nothing exceptional. Promptly we were asked for our order The chicken saag was ok. The onion naan was large, but not great. We both enjoyed the Bukhari Tikka chicken. We might have been in and out quickly, but after clearing the table, and wiping it clean, it took another 10 minutes with my getting up and approaching our waiter to get our bill. The restaurant itself is big with many tables and the staff are constantly pushing by your table - not ideal.

we had dinner at this brilliant restaurant. their decor, lighting, music is classy to say the least. their service is excellent and food is truly authentic. we ordered meat thali, garlic naan, qandhari chicken. each dish was perfectly balanced with the right amount of spice. can't recommend enough for people who live here and who are visiting.

Got the bus to Omar Khayyam hoping for a nice takeaway. It came within four minutes. When I got home it tasted like a pub curry, not a real proper Indian curry. Actually reminded me of the Vesta packet curry in the 1970’s!

Went for lunch, very good value set menu, (good size portions too). A la Carte is also available and reasonably priced. Service couldn't be faulted, staff great.

We ordered takeaway here for the first time today. Food was delivered quickly and arrived really hot. The starters were superb nicely spiced and tasty (onion bhaji and omars mix kebab appetiser). The mains and rice were also really good (kashmiri with chicken and banana, Indhabad special mix). The only slight disappointment was the garlic naan, it didn't seem to have much flavour and didn't taste or smell of garlic at all. Overall good food and would try again.

Decided to try the resturant on a whim after work - me and my partner had a wonderful time, the staff met us on the door and were incredibly friendly. Service was impeccable throughout. The food portions were very good for the price, and the flavour and quality of the food was fantastic. I had the Saag Paneer Makhani and the Paneer was made and cooked perfectly, I was genuinely very impressed. Would happily reccomend the experience to anyone.

Service is professional, decor is stunning, food is ... okay. Went as a large group, everything we got was either nice or just under that. Almost everything came with a lemon wedge somewhere, which was odd in the Nihari. Briyani was a massive portion for the price, unfortunately taste was subpar. Naan was also big, 1 is good for 2 people. Not dissapointed, just wouldnt come again. Most items are overpriced for what they are.

We visit Omar Khayyam every time we come to Edinburgh. Food is lovely and tasty not over priced. The Garlic naan is huge, enough for 2. Great atmosphere and well decorated. Fast service.

Food was just lukewarm the Korma was totally bland no taste at all & I expected Biriyani to be quite spicy but it’s too hot. Also only 2 of each starter normally 3 or 4 in other places - spent a lot of money in a so called top class restaurant - never again !!!!
