Affordable tandoor and non veg options and easily accessible. Self service is a bummer yet takeaway is the best way

I guess the chicken was older than myself, the rest was basically tasteless. Service was fine, but the food quality was overall bad.

A party of four of us went along to Kebab Mahal last night to celebrate my PhD. I had only ever stopped off here before for a kebab, not realising that the menu is so extensive. I ordered chicken curry with cashews and plain naan. The food was superb, the portions generous, and the prices as reasonable as you are likely to find anywhere in Edinburgh. Worthy of five star rating!

Best chicken madras and samosas ANYWHERE

I'll try to be balanced here, the chips and curry sauce were on point and super tasty, and that's where I should have stopped. The donner meat was so bad that me and my friend found it inedible, it was so chewy and hard to swallow, then to top it off, the bog standard pitta bread was stale and just crumbled in your hand. This is coming from someone who has eaten a lot of kebabs in their time. Short and sweet of it is, order a curry and steer well clear of the donner kebabs.

Amazing food. Went there after 20 or so years and the food was just as delicious. Highly recommended.

Originalmente tenía la intención de conseguir un kebab de noche después de algunas cervezas, pero cuando llegamos vimos el menú completo de curry y la opción de sentarse en así que cambió nuestros planes y tan contentos que lo hicimos. El curry era auténtico y delicioso. El ajo nan era enorme, fresco y sabroso. El servicio fue el de un gran restaurante indio, solo una pena que no logramos llegar allí de nuevo.

I assume they haven't eaten fried rice from any authentic shop. Ordered fried rice gets chic pea rice in which chickpeas were also half cooked. If you don't know how to cook these dishes you shouldn't add them to your menu. And my second dish chicken jalfrezi was also chicken curry nothing like jalfrezi. Maybe never gonna eat from there.

Very tasty food and generous portions, will defo come back

Been coming here since I was a student in the early 2000's. Same great taste. I always try to visit whenever I'm in Scotland. I especially recommend the lamb mince and mince and chicken pizza.

This small restaurant is a regular for us when we visit Scotland. We always go for the fantastic curries. I always take Rogan Josh van Lam on my first return visit, fantastic!! In addition, this time we had bendi baji (okra), plain naan and chicken korma. The curries are intensely spiced, the curries with yogurt in the sauce are very rich - not for beginners.

Taste was off. The wrap fell apart and did not hold the chicken kebab well. You need a fork to eat it. Inside the wrap there is very little else other than chicken.

Very sad doner kebab. I expected so much more. The doner was lamb, it smelt weird. No pickles, no radish, no garlic sauce, no tahini. Just lamb, kinda like a coleslaw salad?, and stale pita that broke apart very easily.

Food is very good and reasonably priced, the owner and (I assume) his son are friendly. The place is unassuming and functional rather than fancy.

I ordered a mixed kebab and was surprised that the chicken in it wasn't grilled on skewers. Instead, it looked like someone had cooked the chicken in the oven and then pulled the meat from the bones before adding it to the kebab. The pita bread was also quite hard. Overall, it wasn't the best kebab I've had.

Couple of hours ago, we went there to buy, Doner kebab, Lamb rogan josh and 2 keema rice. At first, we mentioned to the proprietor that please add extra spicy to lamb rogan josh and then he said, yes , later on when we reached home, opened up all items, Unfortunately, there was not enough salt in the rice and the best part was lamb rogan josh curry wasn’t spicy at all.. Sorry to say this, worst experience and we paid approximately 29.80£ …after all it’s not about money, it’s also what a customer expect from them is trust… satisfaction level became zero … I don't recommend anyone here. We recently purchased a Hot Kebab, Keema Rice Extra Spicy, and Lamb Rogan Josh. We spent £30 to make sure that everything was spicy and fresh unfortunately everything was very disastrous. Especially the Lamb Rogan Josh not spicy and the quantities of the item were below average quality of the rice was very cold and lumped the worst food I ever had in Edinburgh. Am especially don't recommend this store to anyone and my friends

Food was delicious, we loved it.

Lowest food garde , very disappointed with taste and smell. Tried to eat as we were hungry. Just took just few bites to stop. Tastes like we are eating meat that's been kept for weeks .very very oily .USA would invade the shop if they knew the amount of oil found in food. Waste of 30 pounds. Worst Pakistani food!!

The portion size is too good. The taste is excellent. There can be a bit of waiting sometimes but that's manageable. We had to wait around 20-25 mins for food after ordering but it was fine given that it was steaming hot when it arrived.

It's one of the oldest places to eat in the area. The owner is just lovely and very well respected. He has his son too who works there and it's a great team. I was starving and a kebab roll on a pita with sauce and salad was the best that my hungry stomach enjoyed. Thanks

I was homeless without a kitchen for a few days and had to resort to some place cost effective that is healthy and most importantly filling. And I am vegan. Unlike other places in Edinburgh which charge a lot of money for very less food Kebab Mahal is very opposite. It has stayed over the years for a reason and it goes beyond selfish reasons to feed people. The gentlemen involved were courteous and kind. It's definitely not a five star restaurant vibe but the food is authentic and beyond good. It's healthy and extremely filling. As someone who grew up in India the portion size was way too much and very appropriate (and more arguably) for the price. I am recommending all my friends from UoE to jump here and to all those I already did they really liked it. It's based at the heart of Uni Campuses and it's open until very late in the night. What else can I ask for? I am really grateful that they have been running the business.

I was in Glasgow for 5 nights with family, and this was the worst place, hands down. Pizza and Kebabs were awful. The only food that tasted ok was the chips and cheese.

Hands down the best Indian/Pakistani cuisine in Scotland. The quality of the food is unbelievably good, the portions are very generous and the overall cooking is amazing. Anything on the menu tastes just amazing and it always has (been eating here since early 2000s). The place has everything you could want food wise and the staff don't need to impress anyone, they are just great at what they do.

If you’re looking for the best food in Edinburgh it’s very easily Kebab Mahal. The food is simply inconceivably delicious and unparalleled to anything else you will find. It is truly out of this world and must be appreciated by more people!!

The ultimate hidden gem. Looks like the kind of place you'd only go to after a night out but had one of the nicest curries of my life here! Highly recommend.

Great customer service, friendly staff

Every year i go to the fringe and every year me and my 3 mates come to Kebab Mahal. Dont be put off by the cold looking donner in the window, you’ll always see people inside and thats the true sign of how good it is. We always order the lamb karahi, its one of the best iv ever had. The blend of flavours, the fresh tomatoes and the succulent lamb that just falls apart with one bite is unparalleled. We get the aloo keema too which is mince and potato. Wow. Rich flavours, spicy, soft potatoes and freshness throughout. A pleasure with every bite. We then have 4 naans and some seekh kebab starters. Incredible with the chilli sauce. The staff have been the same for 27 years, the foods been incredible since day 1. If you’re in Edinburgh and need somewhere to eat thats tasty, filling, enjoyable and served with a smile, this is your spot. We eat like kings for less than £12 a head.

Had the aloo keema rice and mushroom rice, and a plain nan was amazing, very tasty, not greasy 😋 the best I have had in a long time was looking forward to have a curry out of here as it's been a while as I was to far away and it definitely did not disappoint. Used to be a regular customer, until I moved to London. Went in yesterday fir the 1st time in almost 18 years. Quality of food and service has not changed. Still as good as ever. Also nice to see Mr Khan still running the show!

It is okay, a restaurant owned by an old man named Zahid. The order was samboosa. Unfortunately, it is ready and reheated in oil. It soaks up the oil more. Tandoori grilled chicken. We did not like it. It comes with a salad that is preferable to be separated. Karahai is regular chicken, not comparable to Indian or Pakistani Gulf restaurants.

Es sabroso, bien cocinado, abundante y lleno, Este es un restaurante no - lujos con tapas de cuento de fórmica y suelos de lino, pero la vajilla, comer - planchas y vasos siempre están impecables. Los platos de servicio están muy limpios también. No hay alcohol disponible y no está permitido en las instalaciones. Buena relación calidad-precio.

It wasn't good enough. The flavour was okay. But there was no clean environment. Nan was nice. Service was poor.

Biryani and chicken daal were amazing. Visit here if you miss home food.

A wonderful old man with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who run a halal restaurant. The taste of biryani tabab tabab and edam meat with chapati is very delicious.

Staff were friendly and nice however it was probably the worse pizza I’ve ever had. It was awful and had no taste. Don’t recommend it to anyone.

It was very bad! It only had huge pieces of onion in the kebab and fennel that shouldn't be in it. The service was okay! It was so bad I had to throw it away. I had a bad taste in my mouth for a long time. I would say this was the worst kebab I have ever eaten in my life!

Very poor service. Ask for a kebab. Tried to confirm it had no egg. They said yes egg on the pita. Then I Said I'll have the kebab meat without pita. Then when I go to leave they say ohh actually pita is egg free.. really bad service overall. Avoid.

Encontré este lugar después de la sugerencia del propietario de una tienda Desi cerca de la auténtica comida pakistaní. Mirando el lugar desde fuera decidimos probar la cocina de la mezquita en la esquina, pero dejamos allí al encontrar los fuertes olores Haldi de los restaurantes típicos de Bangladesh de la India. Una articulación muy pequeña. No pensamos que íbamos a comer. No hay servicio al cliente. Pero el lugar estaba ocupado y la comida olía auténtica. Escogimos tarjetas de menú de la recepción y pedimos en el mostrador. Digamos para disfrutar del tandoor roti que pudimos ver en otras mesas. El cordero Bhuna gosht tenía buen gusto hecho en casa, pollo karahi impresionante y dal tarka era bueno también. Tandoori roti 🤤 y lassi lazeez (deliciosa). Aaloo paratha no era tan sabroso, aunque muy grande. Volveré a comer aquí de nuevo cuando en Edimburgo esp para Lamb Bhuna gosht

One of the best places to eat in Edinburgh. I used to visit this place regularly years ago. Came back to edinburgh for a day trip and still the same quality food. There is loads of fancy places to eat but this place place is simple with great tasting food. Well done guys.

The kababs are really good and the seasoning are perfect! Not too salty or not flavourless at all! Eat with the vegetables that was served with it and at a little bit of sauce, brilliant! I recommends the mix kabab and the chicken kabab.

Been going here for over 30 years, I'm of south Asian heritage and if its authentic Indian / Pakistani food you want this is one of the best places around, its not a fancy restaurant so maybe not one for a dinner date but the food does all the talking.

This is as unpretentious as it gets, it's not the place to take a first date for a romantic dinner. If you're looking for delicious Pakistani cuisine, you won't find better anywhere in Scotland. Everything on the menu is superb, but the chicken tikka masala is a highlight. Highly recommended.

A lovely place to get a bite to eat, great food and great service. Portion sizes are amazing for the price and quality is of a high standard.

Today, I placed an order for Chicken Tikka Masala curry and Lamb Tikka Masala curry for takeaway. However, when I got home and opened the containers, I realized that I had been given the wrong order. Instead of the curries, I found kebabs in the containers. This experience has left me feeling extremely disappointed.

Just finished eating what has to be the worst curry I’ve ever been served: cold, flavourless chicken tikka biryani, flavourless sag aloo, two stale poppadums and a naan bread that was also stale and cold. Just absolute trash across the board, and fairly expensive as well. Place must have changed hands since it acquired its good reviews.

I had a terrible experience today at Kebab Mahal. It was quite busy when I entered and one of the staff members told me to wait for 5 minutes, which I was fine with considering the busy time. But after waiting for over 30 minutes, the staff came upto to me to let me know that they cannot serve food to me. The thing that annoyed me the most was the staffs attitude. He was rude and behaved like I ( the customer) was a burden to the restaurant. Overall, it was a really unwelcoming atmosphere.

The food is average and the price is the okay.

After so many years of having been a regular, once again I feel satisfied culinary wise with a smile on both my face and wallet. Enjoy!!

I was introduced to this place 26 years ago as an exchange student by a group of friends. 26 years later, food tastes just as good. The tandooris were well done and moist. And their nan still as large as before. Best to sit in and enjoy.

Staff attentive and made suggestions. Portions are abundant. THE FOOD is some of the best I've tasted. My wife had the Chiken curry while I had a mixed Kebab. The curry was rich with just the right spice. The Kebab, best I've had outside Turkey.

It was ok, just. Like many people we sought this out based on either reviews or youtube people. Guy serving was pleasant, the food was edible but not enjoyable. I wouldnt bother.
