Best Indian restaurant in Chippenham

I have been coming here for many years, and realised I had not left a review. The food is divine, and unquestionably the best Indian around. I opt for the Chicken Tikka Main (dry) and it’s clear the chicken is high quality and succulent! The staff are very welcoming and friendly, especially the owner! I have recommended this restaurant to many family and friends. Thanks for great food time after time!

Very disappointing. My mulligatawny soup was basically boiled rice with a little Dhall poured over, inedible. Put me off the remainder of my meal. This was a takeaway for clarity.

This was a birthday meal out for my son who is a very fussy eater. We have used this restaurant for many years but this time he was unfortunately given lamb instead of his order preference of chicken. He was disappointed, but the staff managed to bring him a chicken dish after he waited for a while. Then I requested to take home my half a bread and half a dish. I was told there was a £1 charge for this, being the first time I heard of this I agreed anyway. But then, when home, I realised that I was only given half the dish and not half my bread. Instead, my bread was replaced with a bag of browning salad.

Wonderful food at reasonable prices. An added bonus is you can bring your own alcohol to the restaurant.

Came in late after a work meeting. The staff were friendly and attentive especially given I was the only one in there and probably was a nuisance given my late arrival. The food was very, very tasty and clearly fresh. The aesthetic was nice and it was very clean including the toilets. The price was very reasonable for my order and I will definitely come again.

Disappointed with our meal when visited recently, food was generally good although the chicken was dry even though in sauces. we took our own drinks on the BYO as we have always done., when the bill arrived we had been charged corkage at £1 per person, their window clearly states no corkage and their website does not mention any corkage charge, if it had been mentioned as we opened our drinks it wouldn't have been too bad and we would not have mind paying it, but to have it appear on the bill with no notification seems deceitful. The manager said it was written on the menus but not one of our party saw it, maybe that was due to the dim lighting! I understand all businesses are suffering at the moment but honesty and transparency goes a long way to keeping clientele, other BYO”s locally don't charge this. Maybe having less staff front of house might save costs,( 5 for approx 30 customers is a bit excessive).

Excellent Indian Restaurant. Reasonable prices and attentive staff. Lamb Bhuna was perfect. Will definitely go again.

This was a takeaway for two: chingria special and vegetable dhansak with side dishes aloo gobi, brinjal and bhindi bhajees plus rice and bread. Whilst my companion found his chingria special okay, I was distinctly underwhelmed by the dhansak and the side dishes. All were bland, lacking in either heat or spice with the side dishes seemingly all served in the same 'sauce'. Disappointing.

4th best in UK? Dubious at best, but Super friendly waiters, (apart from the grumpy boss guy), and ok food. Not sure I’d place in a prominent position in the window a visit by Boris Johnson, unless you want to deter future customers. Must be a decision by the grumpy guy I guess.

The food is always good, this review is about the experience and how ‘rushed’ and ‘pressured’ it was. On my way back after 2 days working in London, having arrived at the station I went for something to eat before getting a taxi home. I sat down having ordered a drink and within 5 or 6 minutes of sitting down I was asked 3 times if I was ready to order by 3 different staff, which happens every time I’ve been there. Allow people time … I ended up saying “I’ll tell you when I am ready to order” When the food (which was great) arrived and I started eating, instead of being left to enjoy my meal, there was someone hovering by the table, pacing past me every minute or so, again not a relaxing experience. It was made even worse when they started clearing the table, saying ‘are you finished’ as I was still eating, again I had to say something so they left me be until I was finished. A very pressured uncomfortable environment, get them in, get them gone mentality - if you want to go out to relax, then this isn’t somewhere you can do that. It isn’t the first time this has happened, but, despite the good food, it will be the last for me as I won’t be returning there as a result.

The chicken was a bit dry and flavourless - however it was easily tearing. I had korma but the sauce was underwhelming, and there wasn't enough sauce to finish off the rice AND nan, could have done with much more sauce. Other kormas I've had have a much more complex, rich taste rather than a very bland and subtle taste. If visiting again I'd give tikka masala a go instead. The pilau rice was decent. However, they do have mango lassi on offer which is often hard to find, and was very nice. Service was very good, strictly professional. It was very noisy but overall well kept and clean. About £30 each for two drinks, poppadoms, a main, rice and nan.

Visited with some friends on a Saturday evening. What can you say? It's ok. Food is OK.Service is OK. But that's about it. The thing I dislike is that it is so noisy. However according to the local Conservative MP it is wonderful.

I am guessing that the people of small town Chippenham dont actually know what a good Indian curry is. Dont wate your money on this food. Go to an authentic curry establishment. Very authentic Indian restaurant. The food is fresh and delicious. The little thing that can be improved is the staff attitude. Feel a bit pushy when reading the menu. Overall it is a great experience.

My favourite Indian restaurant in town! The food is always fantastic. Can get a little noisy when it's busy, due to the low ceiling. We normally go early.

Thought it was really good. Booked for 6pm on a Saturday evening, were seated immediately, and service was good throughout. Very nice food, and not too expensive thanks to allowing bring-your-own-booze (although it is licensed). Haven't tried any other Indians in Chippenham, but would happily recommend this one.

First curry in Chippenham, and glad we went here. Great service and food, and bringing your own booze does keep the cost down. Reassuring to see the table next to us being thoroughly cleaned between sittings. We'll be back :)

Went for a friends night out. The service was really good and the food was amazing! It's nice that you have the option to bring your own bottle or use the licensed bar in the establishment. We will be back again!

I have been a regular at the Raj ever since it opened some years ago. Both service and food quality have steadily risen over the years to the point now where, in my opinion, it is the finest Indian restaurant in the area. The food always tastes fresh and is never greasy or oily; dishes are spiced perfectly, and naan breads are light and fluffy. Portion sizes are also good and particularly generous on takeaway orders. For me though, a really important thing is consistency, and some Indian restaurants can be somewhat 'hit and miss' in this respect; not so with the Raj, where I have come to appreciate my favourite dish tasting just the way I like it on every occasion. There is a delivery service which, in my experience, delivers according to the estimated time they give you, but with a free 'bring your own bottle' scheme I prefer to dine in, experience the atmosphere, enjoy my favourite tipple and best if all... no washing-up at the end of the evening.

Asked us to come half an hour later (table was booked for half 7) didn’t seat us till 8pm. It’s now 8:50 and I haven’t ordered my meal yet…

Ordered a take away from here. Very disappointed. More potato than Chicken in the Vindaloo very thin flavourless sauce. The special fried rice looked like a Mr Ben packet rice. The wife vegetable curry was mostly onion. Realised that they had not taken the 10% off for collection. Absolute rubbish.

Good value and plenty of food with a good choice. It's a BYOB and happy to uncork your wine. Friendly helpful staff. Well worth a visit.

Superb food. First visit on a weekend with a few mates - drove 9 miles this time for a takeaway. Well worth the time.

Friendly staff and delicious food.

A great surprise and delight. The attentive staff together with a good wide range of traditional food from India made this visit one to treasure and remember. The portions were generous and I particularly enjoyed the Korma sauce. The blend was very good with a definite deep taste to make ayone happy. When back this way I will definitely return. Well done.

Food was very nice and the location is good. The place is well decorated. BUT KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PRICES! Asked several times for price before ordering, checking which items you can order on their set menu, only to be told it will be costing more as it was cooking.. 💰 I recommend a separate book for the set menu, to avoid any discrepancies.. it can ruin your whole dining experience..

I had Machli Bengal which is described as "Very Spicy" with the following additional text: "Pan fried fresh Bangladeshi white fish (boneless) with fresh chillies, simmered in a hot and spicy rich sauce." It was essentially fish with passata and 2 chillies. Bland. Service was ok depending on the person.

5 * service and food. We were lucky to arrive early and get a table without a reservation as most tables were full when we left. We ordered a mushroom curry and lamb rogan josh with rice and soft naan. A treat to visit the UKs Top 4 voted South Asian restaurant!

Nice meal, friendly staff, great atmosphere.

The food was really good. Restaurant was really busy, whilst we had booked ahead there was clearly no reservation taken. It is a Licensed restaurant however also supports BYOB. From sitting down it took over an hour for our food to arrive which was the main course. They had forgot our starter. Main meal went back starter arrived 20 mins later. Then a further delay in bringing the mains again! Quite chaotic service but the food was very good.

We ordered for 3 people. Very easy and efficient to order over the phone and very polite. We were told delivery within 45 minutes, it arrived in 20 minutes. Portions were generous and very tasty. Will definitely use The Raj again.

Like the service and decoration. It is near Chippenham railway station. However food was not up to the my Indian taste bud. Salt and spices were not there in Veg food we ordered. May be more suitable to people who can't handle Indian spicy food.

Good value, especially if you bring your own and usual quick service but can be much slower on busy days. Waiting to pay often takes a while but you can go to the bar to pay. The food again is usual very good, however we've had a couple of occasions where the quality dipped. Our last visit the samosas were cold in the middle and the chicken was very dry. Basically highly recommended on their good days.

The first time I went, I thought maybe I’d just ordered something odd. Except I order Butter chicken a lot. It’s usually not covered in sugar. So I thought, well maybe that’s just that dish. The second time I went, I purposely ordered chicken masala because it’s so basic and again, covered in sugar. It tasted like chicken in ketchup. The rice pilaf was good and the Alu Ghobi was good but nothing else. Two times, I’m not going back.

Very very poor service. Very rude tilling me I'm not able to pay and have no money when they pulled my card out to fast . When I asked to pay again they told me no must pay cash. I told them no and tryed again and boom card worked but was then told to leave. Will never suggest to go there

Nice restaurant, curries were good, the naan breads and bhajies were pretty average though.

Ate in The Raj on a works night out, staff were very accommodating and the food was fantastic. The chicken in the curries is really tender and seems to be very high quality. All accompaniments were enjoyed and the final bill was very reasonable indeed.

Very very disappointing tbh.. We're staying across the road and it looks nice. Decided to try it out last night but my bro and I weren't that hungry. We thought we'd simply share a starter and a main and a dessert.. Simple as.. The waiter couldn't be understood as we tried to order drinks.. I asked what beers they had and he hadn't the foggiest.. Was wearing a mask, so we gave him a pass. Ordered a couple of Pops, as ya do.. Then when it came to order the main... Chicken Jalfrezi with rice and garlic naan, we were told it wouldn't be enough for 2 people.. I'd recently eaten an edible ( medical reasons 😉) ..so was pretty chilled when he came back and said they could make a big one.. I just didn't wanna argue but guys.. THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT... When they brought out the main meal, the chicken was lamb... We complained politely.. The waiter then said... And I still can't believe it.. " oh don't worry.. We'll only charge you for chicken" 🤔🤔🤔🤔😜😜😜😜🤔🤔🤔🤔 We wanted chicken for a reason... We LIKE chicken... "shall I make a new one"? He asked.. We said yes but then got worried it'll take too long and would they put as much care into a second curry knowing they'd fluffed the order.. If ya know what I mean 😉😉😉😜😜😜 We told them we'd stick with the lamb as didn't wanna stay long.. Then another waiter came a completely wiped down our table whilst we were chatting after the main course.. Couldn't even wait till we'd gone... Food was quite tasty but we were put off by the circus of untrained staff.. VERY DISAPPOINTING 3/4 STAR FOOD 1/2 STAR SERVICE. MUST do better.. We should have been comped in a proper restaurant....!!!

I came here with a friend and the food was delicious. It is a lovely, clean restaurant, with plenty of space and a great ambience. The staff were polite and helpful. I could not fault the restaurant. Caters for large or small parties to couples.

Weekend away with the wife we both enjoy. Indian food we picked a set meal for 2 and what a meal it was unbelievable food excellent staff Best Indian experience we have had thanks for a wonderful meal 11 out of 10 can't recommend this place enough certainly will be back iff we're up this, way again ☺️☺️☺️💯💯

Bloody fantastic curry every time . I come once every week , and never fail.

As usual the food was great . My only criticism is that the staff constantly hover and you are not given time to relax before they want your order . I like to dine leisurely and really dislike it when they start to clear the table before everyone has finished eating This makes me feel rushed and cuts my evening short.

I had heard great things about The Raj so decided to try. We ordered a tikka curry and butter chicken curry. Both curries were unbelievably sweet which we did not expect. They were so sweet that in fact after a couple of mouthfuls I couldn’t...

Got a takeaway, korma and butter chicken. Both were exactly the same colour, taste, texture. Only difference was the korma had what looked like left over tikka chicken in it. Otherwise both tasted of coconut. The bajis were old, sloppy and smelt odd, almost like coffee and the taste was rank. Our narns, one coconut and one garlic, had no difference in appearance, taste wise one was sweeter than the other.. no garlic hint at all. Rice was dry, again almost old.. very disappointed, will not be ordering again.

Restaurant/waiting area (I collected) was empty, which I felt was unusual for a Friday night. Very disappointed. Apparently won loads of awards which surprises me based on the lack of ‘curry/spice’ taste. I suggest going to The Taj Mohal instead.

Very quick cooking time (25 minutes), very well cooked food, generous portions, and reasonably priced. The Raj is now our go-to Indian Restaurant in the area! Thank you The Raj Team!

When I think of Indian take aways I think depth of flavour, soul, spice and disappointingly the Raj has none of this. The food was bland, soulless and cooked with no care. You could taste this throughout all of the dishes the 4 of us had. Wouldn't touch this place with a barge pole. Extremely disappointed. Thanks but no thanks.

I had a take away from the Raj and it was the best curry take away I've ever had. The dishes tasted fresh and each curry had its own individual flavours. I would highly recommend this restaurant and it will definitely be my go to take out in the future. Fantastic!

Really enjoyed coming for dinner here. Food was excellent and service was very attentive for most of the meal except towards the end of my meal when the restaurant was particularly busy. Good beer on draft and BYOB option available with no courage. Reasonably priced. Good food. Covid compliance was substandard. Tables of 7 were seated around the restaurant and I would say we were the only table of 1 household so this was clearly unenforced. Face masks were worn but some staff had their noses out. Tables were places around 1m apart.

Visited on 18th Sept 2020. Food was excellent, service was good aswell. Felt bad as we had no cash to leave a tip. You wont be disappointed if you eat here!

Pre-booked a table for me and my partner. On arrival the restaurant was very busy and lots of people stood in the entrance area. We gave our name and were seated at a table, however the table was right next to the counter phone constantly ringing and staff constantly passing by. No COVID precautions were in place, no member of staff wore a mask or tried to distance from anyone. we requested to move and were moved to a better table. We ordered our food it took over an hour for our starters to arrive this was after they started to bring the main courses out (they did apologise as there was a mix up but over an hour is not good enough). The starters were good Tandoori Chops and Onion Bahjee. After finished our starters there was then another wait for main course. When these arrived I am not sure that they had been cooked fresh and believe they had kept the warm from the starter mix up. But my biggest concern is that they had no precautions in place for social distancing and all the staff were going around as if there was no Covid around. In summary I will not be visiting again as the service was so slow yes it was busy but I think they can not balance take-out, delivery and a busy restaurant despite having several staff. Disappointing.

Booked a table for 2, but last minute guest wanted to join us. Because of socially distancing measures phoned to ask if we could squeeze another guest in, was told to "come on down, we'll do something to get you in". All guest were seated and served quickly, good food, good service.

You won't find a better Indian in England, this restaurant is pure class. The service, the food, the beer is all 5 star. Big props to the Raj for such an amazing experience.
