Spice of Bengal in Wiltshire

On New Year’s Day we hosted 15 family members. We anticipated that we may not be in the best place to prepare food for the family, so asked the Spice of Bengal to help us out. They went above and beyond to provide us with a banquet of delicious food - it was prompt, hot and very well priced. If you’re having a similar event, I can highly recommend getting the Spice of Bengal to cater for it. I’ll definitely be using them again!!

Fantastic food and great service 👍

Last night we ordered a takeaway for collection. We were told it would be longer if we had a delivery but when my husband went to collect, the delivery was sat in the entrance area. We had previously had a bad experience with ordering takeaway some time ago but decided to try again. Big mistake. The food was barely warm. There was absolutely no flavour in the dishes. Oddly there was cabbage and sprouts in the dishes which just didn't work in our opinion. The mint sauce for the poppadoms had a "sour" taste. 1 of the naan breads was so black from being burnt that it had holes in it. The strange thing is that a month ago I had the same meal in the restaurant and I was upset at not being able to finish it because it was so delicious. Although I will add that the level of noise from one of the tables was unacceptable, rude and offensive due to the bad language. The staff did nothing about it. We were unable to hold a conversation at times because of it. I rang and spoke to someone last night who insisted the food for takeaway was exactly the same as the food served in the restaurant. He apologised and said he would pass the details onto the manager. Unfortunately I do not feel anything will change. Will definitely not be ordering again!

Chefs should be wearing beard nets. Found beard shavings in our naan bread and curry. There was also short pieces of hair in our curry. Was very disappointed as first time ordering from them.

Very fresh tasting and flavoursome Dhansak curry and other dishes. Possibly the best Dhansak I've ever tasted. Thank you

Had a great night dining here. 11 of us were all looked after, food was delicious and the atmosphere was loud as lots of birthdays were being celebrated. Every table was full. We'll be back again soon!

Great service, great food, long waits on occasion.

After several previous visits to the restaurant over years we decided to go again yesterday evening. The positives were it was very clean, service very good although there were only 7 diners in total Iin the restaurant, starters were very nice. However my chicken tikka main course was burnt and dry, the bed of onions black, the vegetable curry was like chopped up vegetables in a thick gravy with no spice flavour at all. My wife's chicken tikka koria was was very mild unlike many.she.has had before. The restaurant although clean had no atmosphere, plain clinical walls, no murals, pictures or articles saying it was an Indian restaurant it was more like a doctors waiting room.

Bit disappointed with tonight’s takeaway. Curry and rice was good but we ordered poppadoms and naan bread which was awful. Poppadoms were rubbery and chewy Naan bread was burnt and hard. Couldn’t eat either of them. Disappointing ad usually they’re so much better

This was the first time in nearly 2 years , we used to go regularly prior to this. Well both the service and food was excellent, the staff were very helpful and recommended something new for us . The quality and presentation was really was to a very high standard. We will be returning in the near future.

Arrived to get a takeaway. Decided to sit in for a meal, so glad we did. The food was excellent, the service was fantastic. My grandson was with us and they kept him entertained throughout the meal. Exquisite decor, very clean and busy. Would highly recommend.

Disappointed with the lack of spice in the pathia. Very busy and noisy on a Saturday, so I would avoid booking unless you're prepared to wait. Staff were great even though they were rushed off their feet. Will amend my review if I go again on a week day as I feel the food will be much better if the chefs aren't busy trying to do both takeaway and restaurant at the same time.

We were travelling home from visiting someone in a hospital in London. My wife decided to save time she would order a takeaway online. We chose a nearby restaurant we hadn't tried before called the Spice of Bangal. On arrival, the gentleman appeared confused. Put simply, we live in Kent, but we had ordered from this fine establishment. So we had to phone up and confess our mistake. Their reaction was amazing and full of understanding. We promise that the next we are in Wiltshire, we will dine at this fine restaurant. In the meantime, please go. The service is beyond exceptional. Therefore, their food will be too. Thank you for your understanding.

This place used to be great! Now it’s a disappointment. Service was terribly slow (waited an hour for food to come out), naan was raw dough in the middle and really oily, the food was average at best. The new waiters in there look like they want to be anywhere else. We weren’t alone there were lots of us saying the same thing. This is one of the few places to eat and it feels like that’s the only thing they have going for them right now - shame. I would rather travel further afield to get something better than to return here again

Food is good but a lot of the dishes are very sweet, I don't know if they do this to reduce the " heat" but I go to Indian restaurants for spicy, savoury flavours

They have a brand new menu which we both had the lamb shank,it fell off the bone and was beautifully Spiced. Definitely one to try if your planning a visit. As always the staff are very welcoming and friendly, always great with the Kids and really make you feel at ease. Overall we thoroughly enjoy having this on our doorstep and cant recommend them enough.

Went for a special occasion and it was ruined by poor service. I don't like 'up selling' once they realused we weren't buying bigger drinks, millions of extras the service fell flat. The floater coffees came like cold lattes and stirred in. The dessert wasn't available but rather than ask if we wanted to choose something different we got 'thrown' a coconut dessert and told that was the substitute for a chocolate ice cream! Won't be going back or recommending.

Absolutely wonderful & friendly team, service and food is amazing! Prices and portion sizes are spot on! We are so so lucky to have such an amazing restaurant in Calne😊 Our favourite place to eat❤️

This is a really good restaurant. Spotlessly clean, modern decor, attentive (but not overbearing) staff and the food was mouthwatering and cooked extremely well.

I have not been to an Indian restaurant for just understand 10 years so I was apprehensive was this going to live up to the distant happy memory of old? Well first I was happy I didn't use there carpark and found a back street close by the carpark is far too small and very busy! Why is it busy? Because the chef "sunny" and the other artists make food to send you to heaven! I have never eaten such a divine mixture of food and loved every second of it. And yes I know its not just the food how is the ambiance? It is beautiful! Little booths devided by glass. We went on a bitterly cold night in December but I had still had to roll my shirt sleeves up it was so warm and toastie! The service was exceptional and my bar is high on that one! However what strikes it apart from most restaurants and why I will be returning very soon 1. Its so reasonable in price. And 2. As me and my partner don't drink, they do real Coca-Cola from a draft and it tastes amazing! 😊😍

Food was absolutely gorgeous. You can reqlly tell the difference between the quality of the meats used. As apposed to others that we have used. The best curry house i have been to around the area. There was a little delay with collection however it was very busy that evening so to be expected. Staff were very friendly and attentive whilst waiting for our order. Will definitely visit again!

Great place if you are not familiar with indian food. They help you find out your level of spice tolerance if you tell them you dont want your food to be too hot. The place is very nice and comfortable! Not very loud background music. Paneer is made in the place, which is better in my opinion. The price is fair. Good parking lot. Workers were very kind! I highly recommend it.

There are times when if you don't have anything positive to say, it's best to say nothing. I was there on a Thursday night and it was not as full as it probably would have been on another night. The staff were cheerful and accommodating, but unfortunately, I found my food just a little too greasy for my liking.

It was my first time in Spice of Bengal and I enjoyed it very much. Food was amazing, staff were friendly and I did really enjoy the strawberry daiquiris. I would totally recommend this restaurant.

This place is terrible. Its not indian but Bangladeshi. Over priced poor quality food. Its all poor in Calne. There are 2 excellent Indian taleaways just outside of town.. I go to those now

Had an amazing night there. Very attentive staff would always check if we needed more drinks. Very busy but had a great atmosphere. The food was perfect as always. Highly reccomend if ever your in the area.

We regularly order spice of Bengal curries, they never disappoint. Good portions, reasonable price and taste worth every penny. Dining experience is nice with a laid back and cosy atmosphere. Service is always top quality and polite too, whether its the delivery guys or the waiting staff. Great menu variety too. By far my favourite food place and the place I'd recommend for anybody passing through Calne. Today my delivery came with an extra samosa than normal and I ran around the living room thrilled when I came back to the fridge for my leftovers later in the night and found this out. Seriously guys, never change your veggie samosas. Ever. I normally hate vegetables but these samosas... corrr 10/10 my favourite thing for sure. I enjoyed my curry, particularly the extra samosa (and my other orders over the last few years) enough to write my first review on Google; best food in town no question.

Decided to go for a meal out in Town to celebrate our wedding anniversary, spontaneously called into the Spice of Bengal Calne. What a pleasure and refreshing it was to be have such a friendly greeting and the food was excellent. Mention for Naz who has recently joined the restaurant, he was very knowledgeable and made a great recommendation for the main meal (Bombay Dream Chicken).All of the staff were great, well done for making it a memorable visit, will be going again.

Excellent food nice setting hospitsble treatment. That was in June 2022. That's why we returned again in 2023.

Have used Spice for years but service has seemed to go down hill - a little over an hour before 1st food was delivered and almost 3 hrs in total so they seemed very short of staff.

Rubbish..food 3/10 service awfull.. Could have cooked better myself... Service staff run around like blue arsed flys..atmosphere like a mcdonalds...wont be going again...

We have had many Indian dining evenings and take aways while living in the United Kingdom in particular. Wiltshire, Melbourne and Calne close to our old home. However we have lived in France for 10yrs where there is not so many. As soon as we visit our Famiy, especialy in Calne, SPICE OF BENGAL is our chosen meal delight. We miss our favourite food maker living here so much so we decided to order £100 in side and main dishes and freeze in our large Motor Home freezer. Now every so often we half a meal with side dishes and have an authentic Indian from Spice of Bengal. We never thought of doing this before it's such a wonderful treat, Our Indian takeaway here in France. We will be ordering there and to bring back in a few months you can be sure Mr & Mrs McNee BRETAGNE FRANCE or Ridgemead Calne

Chicken tikka lovely but sadly lamb tikka tough and keema rice not completely cooked. It was our first time so not sure we’ll order again

We have a take away most weekends from here. Today we had to wait 2 hours for delivery when it got here the food containers had leaked and food was just about warm. Very disappointing. We regularly spend over £70 at spice of bengal and we don't even get any complimentary papadoms.

An excellent Indian restaurant. The food is delicious, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The take aways are nice and hot and good value.

We went to Spice of Bengal with two friends. We booked our table for 7pm and arrived on time. We ordered our drinks and food, and when the food came we were very happy, it was tasty and well cooked. However, the waiters were hovering all the time and the moment we put down a fork it was whisked away, and before my partner had even finished his beer we were asked if we could hurry up and leave as they had a queue of people waiting for a table. What should have been a nice relaxing evening catching up with friends turned into a very rushed meal, which was very disappointing. I can recommend the food, but not the way we were hurried along, so sadly won’t return….

Can't fault this place. Friendly polite staff and the food is just perfect. Spot on

30/70 on the quality of the food taste wise the vegetable dansak was pack with flavour but the vegetable biriani was watery and tasteless, the chicken Korma average starters were OK but small salad pot was so small it was an insult adding it. The biggest issue though was the fact that we found dry bits of lamb in the pilau rice so please avoid if you are vegetarian or vegan as they are obviously not keeping their ingredients separate possibly using the same utensils for everything very disappointing

Pre booked after reading reviews before visiting. Very busy on Saturday evening, staff lovely and polite and warned due to business service may be a little slow. Food and atmosphere was very good. Finished to a high standard and nice open style whilst still having your own space. Mixed starters and the Tikkas most of us had were exquisite and very sizeable mains. Wife only had slight issue with her prawn karma being a little wattery. Would 100% recommend and will no doubt use again when next visiting.

Normally the food is very good. However I had a recent takeaway & the lamb was rather fatty & very soft which didn't sit well in the mouth. Also their prices like everything else is a bit steep.

A little slow getting those beers out to tonight, but it was packed out, and only a Wednesday! Great food, thanks!

I turned up on a very busy friday(lucky i had booked)and received a nice welcome.all of my food was of a very high standard,good sized portions well presented.great service throughout my stay and kept the cold beer coming.i enjoyed everything so much i came back on the sunday.would recommend the tandoori mixed grill.many thanks to all the staff.

Ordered a takeaway tonight and it was really good. Very fresh and tasty. Would definitely order from them again.

We decided to go here for our daughter’s birthday after going here a couple of times previously. This time though we booked telling them before that someone from our party had a nut allergy. When we got there we explained yet again, not a problem from front of house staff. The problem came when we started to order our food, our first server… His response “I don’t know, I don’t cook the food”, I asked him to go and find out please. Another server turned up with our food, before he placed them on the table I asked again he said these were fine. We were then sent another server for our mains, although he helped, his awareness of nut allergy was very sketchy and all in all resulted in a stressful family meal. Wouldn’t go again with anyone with an allergy.

Lamb used in currys is tough and gristly. Didn’t enjoy it.

Have ordered from here for nearly 10 years and enjoyed 8 great years here until covid. Since 2020 the menu has been the same basic menu and the food has replicated that. Plain sauces with added chilli to hide a tomato/water base sauce. No real added ingredients to add richness and flavours to sauces. Chicken pieces pretty tough at times. Naan breads undercooked. Just not the same place and unfortunately lost my long term custom.

Very disappointing food. Expensive compared to local competition. My Duck rezala, duck was overcooked and tough, sauce was bland. Chana Massala was swimming in oil, and not at all up to standard. Food turned my stomach. Avoid.

Below average chicken madras, keema rice wasn’t much better, Roti, popadoms and pickles best part of a disappointing meal.

The food was really great but the service wasn't the best. The waiters were quite short with us, kept forgetting things we asked for and made us feel like we were being hurried to get off the table.

Ate here once about 6 months ago. Waiter (owner?) was very helpful when requesting help making sure choices were vegan so was keen to try again. Tried ordering over the phone now and BOTH guys I spoke to were clearly just trying to "get rid" after asking politely to just point out if any choices had meat/dairy in. I was told "We are not vegan. We do nothing vegan". Yet when persisting, they confirmed most dishes I was ordering in were meat/dairy free (though they were warning me repeatedly things had nuts/Coconut in. I know. We're vegan, not allergic to nuts?! Basically all diets are the same I guess?) Got about halfway through order and the attitude got so bad I gave up and ordered elsewhere. Shan't bother trying again, rubbish customer service.

We enjoyed a fabulous Valentine's celebratory meal. The food and ambience are always excellent and we were made to feel very welcome. We were well looked after by the staff, and especially Raj who could not do enough for us to ensure our experience was...

Visited here 26th January as a table of 2. Food ordered promptly, came out quickly and to a good standard and taste. Only negative was you feel very rushed to order eat and get out to free up table again. Would return as a treat...

Best Indian in this area. Try you will not be disappointed

Recently refurbished and still serving some of the tastiest curries.

Sorry to say but I have tried this place a few times and it really is average at best . I said I wouldn’t use again but did and was worse than even before . The curries were covered in so much ghee oil and most of the chicken was very tough . The curries were bland and didn’t resemble what they should be . I tried them again as they now deliver but wish I’d ordered at Havali in Bromham and picked it up . This has always been as a takeaway and I have not eaten in the restaurant for a long time . Really don’t get all the 5tar reviews .

Spent a small fortune on a below average take away, late delivery, dry food and when we complained the attitude confirmed this setup is not good, my advise is to avoid.
