The Ragged Cot Restaurant in Stroud

My partner and I came here for Sunday lunch as a last minute decision. And what a brilliant decision it was! Food was amazing we both had roast beef and it was brilliant, meat was very tender, veg seasonal and cooked beautifully and spot on gravy. Service was both professional and friendly but not intrusive. Can I give 6 stars!!!! Thanks guys

At first glance, we thought that the dishes would not be able to match their descriptions on the menu, which looked a tad 'Masterchef'. However we should not have worried: the food was delicious as well as excellently presented, and there was zero quibble at making some small changes to suit diners' wishes. Very enjoyable. Service was not overly fast but certainly not a problem, and the table service was excellent. A thoroughly enjoyable mid-week evening out.

Booked fairly last minute through the uncomplicated online booking system. A very welcome escape for dinner from the dull corporate hotel I was staying in. My daughter and I agreed this was one of the best steaks we have ever had. No need for additional sauces (apart from dunking the delicious chips into). Very friendly staff and efficient service. More expensive than originally planned, but worth it

We stayed here for 2 nights exploring the Cotswolds. Really friendly, helpful staff and a nice atmosphere. The food for breakfast and dinner was very good and typically priced for this fairly touristy area of the UK. The only reason I have dropped to 4 stars was because the room was a bit tired. Comfy bed, plenty of space, but just needs a bit doing to spruce it up. Bathroom in particular needs re grouting/silicone and could have been a bit cleaner, but overall we had a lovely stay and would return. Definitely recommend for a Cotswold break.

The Ragged Cot changed owners multiple times in recent years and I stopped going because it really went down hill BUT - it's really Back ! The new team are simply so lovely and welcoming and so helpful. The menu is back to something with variety and quality. The prices are good. This place is back on my regular eats list again - thank you team at the Ragged Cot !

We arrived there last Sunday and we were so happy what a beautiful beautiful place. The staff are very very friendly. They would go out of their way for you. The rooms were gorgeous and the restaurant was fantastic. I can’t say a bad word about it. It was the best place that we visited, and we will be going back there again next year. Anyone that goes there will thoroughly enjoy it it was very clean and the food was excellent. Like I said the staff and the managers especially went out of their way to help us in any way they could. Absolutely brilliant staff and the food we ordered was tasty and well cooked. However the options for vegetarian or vegan meal was so limited. Only one main course option so I was limited to just having a starter. No vegan burgers, or (gigven it’s pub food) vegetarian sandwich option or something like a cauliflower or macaroni cheese - the only option was a vegetable curry. The supper menu looked similar. I’d love to visit again but with such limited options i won’t be.

Having had two previous hit and miss experiences before with various issues including sending food back twice cold, we were hoping on the third visit it would be better! Unfortunately my pork belly was inedible, so dry I couldn’t chew it. They did remove it from the bill and offer a free pudding which my partner missed and we ended up paying for. Also personally didn’t like the pudding and left it. My partners meal he said was good (curry). We paid over £70 and all I ate was the bread and a glass of wine. Sorry but I couldn’t recommend this place.

What a wonderful pub. The feel of the pub and the atmosphere were great. We were shown in to the dinning room which over looked their lovely garden and had a lovely dinner. My wife and I found the whole evening very enjoyable and the food and wine were both of excellent quality. Service was attentive and our waitress was on hand to answer questions about the menu etc. Very good and we will definitely be returning

We had booked to visit here a week before xmas as a group of friends and had each paid a £20 deposit and pre placed our food orders ( this was not advertised when booking but due to the time of year it was understandable) I questioned about what the deposit covered and was clearly told it was in case of no shows. On the day we had 1 member who was very late joining us and another who didn’t show. We proceeded to dine without the late arrival and explained to skip her starter that was pre ordered so she could join us for the main. No one asked us what food wasn’t needed for these people and the mains and desert for the no show were brought to the table. At the end of the night we were asked to pay but no one gave us the bill, when we asked for this multiple times we realised that they hadn’t added on the deposits that we had already paid, as if they were hoping that we had forgotten. We then realised that we were billed for the food for the no show as well as the starters for him and the late arrival that were skipped and never brought to our table. When we questioned this we were told it was company policy to charge for the food, even though we explained that surely this is what the deposit was for?? They were not prepared to budge on it and after feeling very much backed into a corner we v reluctantly paid for it all (inc the starters that we never received). The service throughout was terrible, we asked multiple times for food and drinks that we had ordered and not received. There was a live band due to play in the area that we were dining and after approx 30 mins of them setting up their equipment they played 1 song and were asked to move as someone had complained. There were about 6 tables dining in the same area and none of us were asked our thoughts and as a table with many musicians on it we were v much disappointed and saddened by the lack of consideration of the musicians and the other diners. After visiting the pub I emailed them to request a refund for the food that we had not received but paid for and to explain my disappointment of having to pay for the food of the no show, after already paying a deposit. They were not willing to back down and still explained it was company policy, even though they contradicted themselves multiple times on this. I eventually was offered a voucher to use the next time I dine (although this wasn’t attached to the email), I will not be dining again. I asked for a refund instead and have not received any response since. The food was ok, not worth the price and nothing special. All in all a very disappointing visit with no customer service and myself and the rest of my party will not be visiting again or recommending it.

Awful service, asked twice for condiments. Didn’t get offered normal chips only posh at £8.50 extortionate!!!! No menu offered, very disappointed. Won’t be back it’s the second disappointing visit here. The room with the fire was empty !!! The competition is cheaper, friendly and we will in future go there. Such a shame. We didn’t complain but nothing was offered. Customer care in this day and age is vital !!!!

Food good. Staff great. BUT... we (a couple) were seated next to the noisiest, loud mouthed foursome EVER - no children involved. This made worse by no soft furnishing to soak up the noise - chairs scraping across floor boards etc. The father and son shouted - conversationally - throughout their 3 courses WHY??? The daughter, presumably (in law) constantly got up and down and squeezed between our small table and theirs - she was as big as a house. The poor old ageing mother said practically nothing - she didn't have any room for comment in between the father and son's incessant onslaught on the room's ambiance. It ruined our lunch. I don't think we'll be going again.

A beautiful country inn with helpful staff and a lovely room. We stayed for one night after a negative experience at our previous hotel. Professional service, yummy food and cocktails at the restaurant and a nice breakfast included in the cost of the room. A good price at £35 per person. Would definitely recommend and would visit again!

First time visiting- friendly welcome and nice decor. Very friendly staff. Lamb shank was nice and tender although the mash was very dry- like a large batch was cooked and sat under a heat lamp. Burger was ok, average, actually patty was pretty tough.

Used a Travelzoo voucher for a 2-course lunch and prosecco. The food was better than we thought it might be so it was a nice surprise. The only issue was the burger and chips weren't that warm but we didn't mention as my other half was too hungry to wait for another.

I have been to the Cot over many years, this being the first time in since Covid. My family ordered from the menu, steaks, burgers, steak pie and other dishes. The food came out and was either cold or grossly over cooked. Sent back the cold burger and eventually another one turned up, again, not much better and still grossly overcooked. My son only ate half his burger, and I left most of the second one. The pie pastry was so hard my wife could not even eat it. Went ahead and ordered 2 ice creams for the children that were eventually delivered with 2 desert size spoons on each plate, I was charged 5.99 each for them alone. The bar guy mentioned to us that the chef/owner was aiming for a second rosette, not even sure how they have one let alone getting 2. My family are local and are advising other friends not to go to the Cot because of the overpriced pretentious food that is just not up to scratch. If you are looking for a really good pub style eating experience, go to the Thames Head on the Cirencester to Tetbury road.

Beautifully presented pub (more of a restaurant); both the inside and outside areas. Plentiful parking. Lunch menu and dinner menu very similar which was surprising. I had the fish and chips which were divine. Drinks etc good. Service was attentive despite being stretched. Without doubt would recommend and return.

We visited the Ragged Cot for dinner, guided by the good reviews and expecting a food offering commensurate with the quite high prices charged. We were very dissapointed. We thought a cocktail to start, but the bar area was more a beer and crisps place, so we changed to beer. I should have taken notice of the warning bells when my (£6.15) pint of beer was poured from one opened bottle on the bar, the dregs from a second bottle and topped up with third bottle. Not good! The restaurant area was pleasant enough, and the service was efficient. My wife ordered fish and chips and reported it was very nice. I ordered the "Duo of Ragged Cot Wagyu Cross Steak Burger" which was brought to the table so quickly it must have been pre-assembled and left on the counter waiting for an order. Consequently it was just lukewarm, the beef was quite tastless, the onion rings were omitted, neither of us could identify what the "burger sauce" was other than being an acidic mess, and the chips tasted old and stale. This was the feedback given to our server, when asked how the food was. A memorable experience, but for the wrong reasons.

This place was absolutely great. We stayed for a couple of nights. Pub and restaurant amazing, staff were absolutely wonderful. Lily was super professional and excellent with us and other guests. Chef, Tom (I think) was so talented, food was amazing, got be be 10/10. We will definitely be back 😊

Stayed overnight when visiting friends for birthday. Chosen for convenient location. Turned out to be a lovely hotel with great atmosphere and good pleasant service. Room was excellent and bar snacks and breakfast were of a very high standard.

Absolutely A1 dining experience from start to finish. Fabulous food, great service and a very special chef called Tom. Roast was AMAZING and sea bass and mussels even better! Desserts delicious and beautifully presented. V friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended

What a fantastic 2 night stay we have just had at the Ragged Cot. Greeted on arrival by a very enthusiastic Lily during a very busy Sunday Lunch service. Room was modern but with a boutique feel, the raindrop shower was fantastic with no end of hot water ! We had booked for Sunday Roast and was not disappointed by the price, quality or quantity of food that was served. Yorkshire puddings very light and airy and large enough that James Martin would have been proud!! Roast beef was delicious and the vegetables beautifully cooked perfectly al dente ! Desserts could only just be consumed, but were homemade, delicious and very well presented. Dinner plans for the second evening where altered so we could dine again at the Ragged Cot. We were treated to a fine dining experience by Head Chef Tom. Starting with a bar snack during pre dinner drinks of Parsnip Crisps that were seasoned to perfection. Our starter was a Guinea Fowl Bon Bon, pickled vegetables and a tarragon sauce. Very delicate, presented on a bed of roasted barley it certainly didn't disappoint. Mains were up next served by the ever professional Terry (GM), Venison Stew with Mashed Potato, Bacon & Chive Dumplings, Roasted Root Vegetables & Crispy Kale. Partner was served Pan-Fried Seabass with Mussel-Bouillabaisse, Tempura Caper Berries, Parmentier Potatoes & Samphire. Venison was tender, tasty in a beautifully rich ragù. Dumplings again were light and very tasty due to the local dry cured bacon used. The sea bass was perfectly cooked and the Mussel Bouillabaisse was amazing! Again, all presented beautifully on our plates. A homemade tasty palette cleanser of Apple sorbet on a bed of crumble was enjoyed before desserts came along. Crème Brulée with Pistachio Shortbread, Berry Compote & Caramel Brittle was light with a crunchie topping and intense but not overpowering compote. The local cheese board had a selection of smoked cheese, creamy brie and blue cheese, served with a flavoursome onion chutney and fresh grapes. Amazing dining experiences for both very different meals, presented stylishly and tasted divine. I would highly recommend the restaurant at Ragged Cot, Tom and his supporting chefs cook with passion and precision that is designed to tantalise the palette of any diner. Other diners that evening highly praising the Hereford Beef Shin pie and the Traditional fish and chips. A wonderful experience to stay and dine at the Ragged Cot, staff were friendly and couldnt do enough for us and prices very reasonable. Will be returning very soon !!

I had a 2 night stay here with five friends, what a gem of a place. In a rural location with open fires and lovely bedrooms. The food was amazing with good size portions,extremely tasty and cooked to perfection. We were so impressed we ask to speak to the chef who was called keith. We just had to complement him personally as we were so impressed. Would definitely recommend a visit to this lovely pub and to sample the amazing food.

We spent a two night weekend here with friends. Great location in the south Cotswolds and very easy to get to. Rooms were perfect but the hi light were the drinks, with a stunning pint of pedigree (for £3.50 at certain times!) and the food. We ate both nights in the restaurant and enjoyed huge, wonderfully cooked food on both nights. Add to this the amazing breakfast and I don’t think I’ll eat again for a week. We ate at The Ragged Cot as a group of 6. We were extremely well looked after, the service was exceptional and the food was excellent. I had the burger and it was probably the best I’ve tasted, it was so filling but I was never going to leave any of it. We met up with Keith the chef and congratulated him on his food. Hopefully we’ll be back one day to enjoy it again!

Outstanding dining experience from start to finish. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and the food was simply outstanding. We will definitely be back!

Came here for a family lunch. Food was superb, well presented and very tasty. Great atmosphere. Setting was beautiful. Staff were welcoming and very professional. I can’t recommend the ragged cot enough. Thank you for a lovely afternoon 🙂
