The Canteen has Grown so big now they can’t cope with cooked food orders. Remembrance Sunday lunch (with a starving baby) we waited 45 minutes and was served one meal at a time with intervals of 5 minutes. Waitresses were sweet but too few for the size, the manager extremely rude and shameful - asked us to leave when we complained. So many others complained and asked for refunds so we weren’t alone. Will never go again -

Was looking forward to a good coffee. Unfortunately coffee poor and lukewarm (even though requested it extra hot). I was also overcharged but didn’t realise at the time. Had to remind staff for item they forgot. Such a shame as it’s a quirky place and additional space for young children to play but not value for money.

What’s happened to the Canteen. I’ve been coming here for years and always loved it but things are going down hill. They’ve expanded again into what was part of the shop above. The tables are dirty and the young serving staff have not been trained on how to clean a table as I saw someone ask and they came back with a dry tea towel and just brushed off the crumbs. The breakfast is average, very dry sausage, they are not flexible at all with the menu. A friend asked for just sourdough and avocado and was told yes but you will pay the same price as the avocado breakfast which has two eggs too. The eggs are slightly undercooked. My friend had to ask for butter for her toast. All in all it’s just not what it once was, not great food, not great service and not great price. I think that’s the last I’ll visit now which is a shame

Poor service from staff, falsely advertised got told breakfast had 2 of everything and kids meal had one of everything, the only thing there was 2 of was bacon (streaky) so in reality one normal slice. Staff not trained to know what comes out on plate and didn’t get an apology more of a excuse of having “young staff” so not having a good day… most young staff are hard working when they know the right information, wouldn’t recommend when there are many better cafe and brunch spots in Stonehouse!

Food and drinks were tasty BUT seemed slightly chaotic in there. It was 2pm and only 3 sandwiches available - the rest were sold out, it took us a while to chose a table as no tables had been cleared up with empty plates and spillages on all of them, water canister wasn’t filled up - nothing majorly wrong but all the little things added up to a less than ideal service experience. Interior decor was lovely though.

We have coffee/cake fairly regularly at The Canteen - great coffee and selection of cakes etc. atmosphere/ambience, surroundings excellent. However, what lets it down all too often is the service! You order coffee and cake at counter - take cakes with you and coffee delivered to your table. However, on average it takes 10-15 minutes before the coffee is served (today near 20 mins and not very busy). What a shame otherwise definitely 5 stars

Can't understand the last few reviews. This was a great find, the whole thing is a bit of a feast for the eyes as you walk in a bohemian hodgepodge of local arts and crafts inside the building. The food was served quickly and was delicious, all supporting local bakeries/butchers/coffee etc and the price understandably reflects that. The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere inviting, enough to come on your own and feel comfortable.

Very disappointing. We came here with a child with allergy needs. Staff did not understand my child's needs and offered food which was unsuitable. The chef came out and offered to make something different although the choices for dairy free food was slim. The chef told us she would return to take our order but she never came back. After the rest of us had eaten our food and my daughter had to sit and watch we asked if someone would come to take her order just to be told the kitchen had closed and they couldn't serve us. We had already paid for the first thing she had ordered and when we asked for a refund we were told they could only offer us credit. Will not be going back there again. Staff did not seem concerned by any of these issues in the slightest.

A catering car crash. I could not have been more disappointed. We arrived at 12.45. Breakfast menu finished at 1.00. Told that we couldn't order breakfast. So we changed our choice. After 40 minutes I asked where our food was. Assured it was on its way. After 1 hour and another intervention by me it arrived. A feeble apology, excuses about a busy kitchen. Apparently front of house had no control over food flow. A family lunch ruined. I would be embarrassed if I worked here. The staff clearly weren’t. Never again.

For an average breakfast it was expensive. The order when it arrived was incomplete. We were told the missing drinks were coming. We waited, nothing, so asked again, when bottled drinks arrived we had to ask for glasses. When toast arrived we had to ask for butter. Not sure why we had to do most of the thinking after paying£20 each for breakfast?

This used to be my favourite place and i would recommend to everyone. But the last 2 times have been poor. The selection of food isn't great. So much so I've had a dicky tum. The service isn't friendly anymore and it's slow. The wonderful vibrant atmosphere has changed to a flat, dull and sad. I couldn't have raved high enough in my previous review but feel due to the upset tum, dried out food I needed to let others know. We were also sat outside but had to move inside due to rubble falling on us due to building works. We were the 4th couple to move for this reason. Safety should come first and the seating area should be marked as not in use whilst the building oposite is renovated, before someone gets really hurt.

This was once our ‘go to’ cafe, with its funky decor and wide range of eats, including a decent selection of gluten free choices (now greatly reduced). Sadly the quality and selection of food has declined while the price has greatly increased. Yes, inflation and the cost of produce has increased over the past few years, but £15 for a fry-up (with one very dry sausage), or £6 for a very basic bacon bap, is excessive pricing (no matter how chic the crockery is). As an extra to our brunch we ordered the paprika chips. These were, unfortunately , inedible due to the sheer volume of the salt coating. They were returned (something I seldom do) with the expectation of being given an option, the classic ‘replace, or, refund’. Nether were offered. So, after years of supporting this business, I can no longer financially and gastronomically justify doing so.

The design is rustic.and it has the potential to provide a premium experience. Unfortunately, it is failing to do the basics well. Good dogs policy but the service is very slow.Part of our order was missed. It is expensive I don't mind paying more if the experience is unique. The tables weren't clean or wiped down . Equally the pricing on the cake isn't that clear. My wife told me the toilet seat in the woman's toilet was broken and it was dirty. It's a shame because it could be excellent.

The place looked lovely and we ordered coffee and cake. The coffee was good but the cakes were incredibly sweet and inedible. I took one mouthful and immediately told a member of staff. I thought they said I could exchange it for something else but when I brought it to the counter they said they had meant I could buy something else. Honestly, I'm not normally someone to send food back or leave a bad review but I thought that the staff handled this badly. Isn't it more normal to replace something in a restaurant when it isn't well made or well received? Each cake cost £3.95 and we simply couldn't eat them. It ended up being an expensive cup of coffee - bill came to £14.40 in total and sadly we won't be visiting again.

Too overpriced!!!! Would not recommend. This used to be a lovely cafe, however I visited last week and have noticed it has gone downhill. I ordered a plain bacon bap which cost me £9.60!! It came as a brioche bun with 2 bits of bacon in it. Not much of a menu either. Very over priced. I also ordered ketchup in my bacon bap but when I had it delivered, I was told the sauces were inside and I’d have to get it myself. Not much of a service there.

In the basement of the wonderful shop that is Domestic Science can be found the iadjoining cafe “The Canteen” which serves the best locally sourced food, cakes and coffee. Like the rest of the building the cafe follows the interior room placement of the mill and stretches across two completely separate rooms. With it’s quirky interior and comfortable sofas, chairs and tables I thoroughly enjoyed my restful lunch of smoked mackerel pate, sourdough bread, capers and rocket followed by “Persian Love Cake” and as requested an extra hot decaf, skinny cappuccino! Pleasant, friendly, staff but very expensive! £15.30 for 2 not terribly good, not very hot coffees, a piece of cake and a very small lemon tart. Maybe warm coffee is the norm now, as with the increased importance given to health and safety, these places are probably not allowed to serve hot drinks in case people get scolded. Think school canteen with benches and long tables. I suppose the clue is in the name! Popular on a weekday morning, though, so maybe I'm missing something and other people must think it good value. Wilting greenery in the form of cut tree branches not enhancing the place. To me it felt a bit like being in an underground shelter.

Had poached eggs and baked beans (odd combination I know but safe for my allergy’s) but it took ages (coffee well gone!) and then the yolks were hard and so were the baked beans, the beans weren’t too hot either. I did raise this, the waitress apologised, and said she would mention to the chef. Coffee was nice as was the DF cake. The shop is great for unusual gifts.

WHAT A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE! My son took me out for lunch on Saturday - what a lovely surprise! But ........... we decided to try The Canteen having not visited there for some time. The weather had turned and the temperature had dropped so not very warm. We ordered - me - cheese on toast and my son a breakfast and two glasses of water. And we decided to take a cake away with us - not a great deal of choice considering it was a Saturday - busy. Question - why is it only an option of vegan cakes? what about us that enjoy a 'normal' slice of cake! We were instructed to take a table at the back but as we approached we were told not to sit there but follow the arrows to another dining area. There were lamps hanging from the ceiling and nearly everyone my son hit his head! Seems like anyone that is over 5ft 6 will have an issue! The table was grubby and the area was cold not helped by the doors being opened and closed (or left open by inconsiderate customers leaving) by staff coming in and out with orders! Our lunches arrived - oh dear! My cheese on toast was in fact masses of cheese in a toasted sour bread sandwich. There was soooooo much cheese - far too much and on the side was a pile of tomato and cucumber - which looked like an after thought? But .............my sons well..... considering it was £15 - it looked unedible! The bacon was frazzled and burnt. The tomato was burnt. The mushrooms had died and were a mush! The sausage was burnt black on one side and the toast was so hard too! thankfully the poached egg was runny (ish). My son did not enjoy his big breakfast and neither did i enjoy my so called cheese on toast! The ambience was not nice either - cold and grubby and the seating - metal chairs uncomfortable. Would we go back - no! Would we recommend - no!

Update: Went for lunch 14/10/2023 and I've had to downgrade my original 4-star rating to only 2! The Canteen has gone thru' a supposed reconfiguration but has subsequently lost its lovely cosy feel along the way. Whereas it was once quirky, it is now just tatty. Its sofas don't work well in the alternative space and only take up unnecessary room and the rearrangement of old tables and chairs don't help. In fact, a trestle table broke and collapsed while a family were using it! Thankfully no-one was hurt but I bet they were shaken up! It made a terrible noise with drinks spilling everywhere. You have to choose a table before placing your order. At the till you have to recognise your table on a map to say the table number for your order but in practice this is shambolic. If visiting on your own, how do you nab a table if you don't have anything to leave behind, say a coat, on a chair or the table itself? Even if there's 2 or 3 of you, you all have to go to the counter to see/read what's on offer and individually if splitting the cost. All so time consuming - and the order(s) take a fair amount of time to materialise (altho' this was always the case but with an "upgraded" kitchen one hoped it would have improved). All this would have been bearable if the food had been good but it really wasn't! We both ordered baguettes filled with bacon, brie and cranberry sauce. The "baguettes" were more akin to doughy sub rolls. The bacon was precooked and cold and greasy. The brie hadn't been warmed to melt alittle. They were so unappetising I left most of mine. At a total of £17 for food alone, it was a total waste of money + to add insult to injury much of the cutlery was dirty and needed a proper wash! All in all a very disappointing visit and, unless we hear otherwise from friends that at least the food's returned to a good standard, we won't be going back. This is my original review from some time ago:- Been here for lunch a number of times when visiting Nailsworth. The food is consistently good and I'll definitely be going again...and again!

What can I say about the Canteen? We dropped in recently for Supper Club and chose the vegan option. The Thai themed food was superb, service was exceptional and our mock tails were absolute perfection. This is the only place I take family when they...

Wonderful quirky atmosphere and enjoyed the retro decor. Been many times and impressed by the extended layout and new serving area. Choice of sitting outside in the gravelled courtyard, the big new room or the original, quite room.Definitely the best coffee in Nailsworth, even bought...

Waited double the wait time and missing item from my brunch.. staff didnt inform me or offered a replacement when mentioned. Confused staff not knowing where orders go or the drinks.. kept being asked if drinks were ours! Otherwise a nice place and a hub to enjoy.

We were told that we couldn't order a cooked breakfast as there was a transition happening in the next week. We found that strange as everything was listed on the board that we could have, Bacon Sandwich, Sausage Sandwich, Eggs, Beans...yet we couldn't have as cooked breakfast, only served as individual items with toast/bread? The water/coffee came out with limescale floating on top of it, my friend had to ask to get his coffee swapped. This should be enough to put you off eating somewhere. The service was lame, nobody seemed to have any idea what they were doing. We sat on the table and chairs outside, my friend had sit at the bottom of the table, because the space was too tight for everyone to sit opposite each other. The cushions were dirty and not enough of them. We asked for water and were told we would have to walk round and get it ourselves, same with the condiments. I complained twice and heard nothing back.

After all the advertising hype of re opening with more space, deli & a juice bar I didn’t see much evidence of any of this. Been going here for years so was expecting more. Still crowded in the ordering area, ordering was chaotic & several...

This was the best cafe we visited in the Cotswolds and we visited a lot! Coffee and cake were both delicious. We didn't eat lunch there as we didn't have time but it looked delicious. The surroundings were quirky and we felt really comfortable. It...

The Canteen is such a great place. Today, everyone seemed very stressed, rushing around trying to give out orders they weren't sure about. Some of the staff weren't very sure of the menu or if it could be adapted to a dairy free option. After a lot of toing a froing, I asked if they could do a BLT, which they said they could do. After a very muddled start, the BLT was out of this world and something they should put on the menu. Happy customer 😁👍

Beautiful little place tucked out the way inbetween two old industrial buildings. The history of which I found fascinating. Quirky layout and decor it had a really nice feeling to it. Super busy for lunch time, we managed to get there just before lunch time, plenty of seating outside with most of it under cover. Staff were friendly and polite. Food was excellent and came out quick. Nice selection of freshly made cakes and treats to choose from. Definitely visit the store next door also.

First time here. My daughter brought me here as she has had some lovely brunches in the past. Very disappointed. Firstly while queueing to order there were multiple wasps crawling all over the cakes for sale on display. We ordered 2 full English breakfasts which listed as sausages, bacon, eggs, beans, mushrooms, potatoes, tomato and toast for £12. I asked for mine without tomato but they forgot so it was on my plate. There were 2 small rashers of bacon, 1 tiny sausage, 2 spoonfuls of beans, 1 mushroom and 4 pieces of diced potato. My daughter had hers without eggs tomatoes and mushroom and in pace of this she got a larger portion on beans. Definitely not worth £12. The only reason we didn't send it back was because we were really hungry and in a rush. Would not eat here again.

This was my third visit to The Canteen and I was really disappointed. The food was good when it arrived but we had a long wait for it ( they did warn us about this tbf) but the cutlery and crockery left a LOT to be desired in terms of cleanliness. Service was also pretty pathetic.

Cute hidden jewel tucked away in between two roads with a big selection of cakes and warm and friendly service. The cakes were good but not great. The Persian cake made with almonds, pistachio and rose water was unique, however the butter cream was too sweet and quite grainy. The almond, orange and blueberry cake was quite bitter due to the orange.

A lovely quirky cafe. Coffee is excellent and food is good. The only 'issue' is that breakfast cooking doesn't start until 10am and no scrambled eggs are possible apparently....only poached and fried...which seems rather odd.

Long time fans of the canteen. Always visit a few times every time we’re in the cotswolds. They were fab with my specific dietary requirements and adapted menu items to suit my needs. Friendly staff and wonderful setting.

Poor value. Mash was flattened butter, no garden peas left, offered left over mushy peas. Avoid.

Delightful and charming cafe and tea room at the southern end of Frampton village green. The homemade cakes were delicious . Light lunch, lots to choose from All items are reasonably priced, well presented, good quality food and love the atmosphere and traditional ambience of this cafe. Staff we found friendly and helpful when ordering our food. We had jacket potatoes, prawns & coronation chicken, both came with salad. We would recommend visiting. Also even more grateful as I left my handbag behind when we left,They kindly put it behind the counter, they remembered us and as soon as we walked back into the cafe they handed it to us without us even having to ask. Thank you xxx

Came along with a big group of support workers and people with additional support needs from a day center in Stroud. Everyone was so helpful and accommodating making everyone feel welcome and safe. Wonderful atmosphere. Thanks guys!!

Well the cafe has some marvellous cakes - the flapjack was absolutely delicious1 You can also take them away. Be aware that they close promptly by 4pm so dont leave ordering too late. There are some nice gifts in the shop - I bought incense for presents. If you want to see the monastery chapel be aware that it is nowhere near to the car park and cafe - if you like a walk that is fine, if your mobility is limited there is space to park up near the monastery itself. The walled garden looked rather sad!

where to start! What a welcoming, warm establishment. I have drunk and eaten here on multiple occasions and can only say that the staff, the food, the atmosphere and the events that The Hog hold are the best in the area. This is a must visit location. Thanks Team Hog
