The Radcliffe in North Hertfordshire

This has been our local for 10 years. We’ve seen a few changes during that time and have always supported it. Unfortunately it seems to have turned into a sports bar. I can understand this for the Euros and Olympics. However, last night there were 3 large TVs blaring with Sky Sports. The locals don’t want this. We’ll be finding a new local that cares about what their local customers want.

This was my first visit to The Radcliffe Arms and my Husband joined me, for a Christmas meet up, with a local group I'm involved in. It was nice to meet in person, in a relaxed atmosphere. Some people I'd only seen on Zoom before. Everyone seemed to enjoy the food and drink. I had the vegan Spicy Koftas, with a Christmas Ruby Ale. He had the pizza of the month, which had fig and prosciutto on, with Lucky Saint non alcoholic beer, as he was driving. He found it delicious and commented on the difference a wood smoke oven made. As I like really spicy food I put chilli oil on mine. It came with pearl couscous, salad and olives and was quite filling. I declined a coffee, but my husband enjoyed his. All in all, a nice evening out.

You can't really go wrong with Charles Well Pizza, Pots, and Pints venues. Always top quality pizzas. It would get a 5 star review if only they stocked a premium draught Ale. GhostShip is not to my taste. Too hoppy!

The pizza was very delicious. However the service was very poor. We waited for 1 hour for 2 pizzas. When the pizzas finally arrived, nobody apologised for the waiting. I understand it was a little busy, but they should have warned us about the waiting when we ordered the food (normally in other pubs the staff tell the customers if there are delays). Plus the drinks are so expensive.

Had evening meal last Saturday. Pizzas (Shroom and Pesky) as good as ever, salads and kohlrabi fritters lovely (well, the Mediterranean salad's a bit of a misnomer and had more wet lettuce than a limp handshake). Only DNA on handpump, but it was pretty good. Staff worked really hard on a busy evening and gave great service (they seem to do this naturally - is there ever a manager there?).

Just had a lovely early evening midweek meal at the Radcliffe. The bar staff were so friendly and helpful and the pizzas were great, I went for the Lardo and my wife had a Shroom. Both brilliantly cooked. We will be back again very soon.

Very good atmosphere and most important the oven pizza is great!! Cannot wait to come back for a pizza lunch meal.

We recently visited the Radcliffe Arms on our usual Friday. With only 1000 characters to use I do not have enough good words to say about it. The best pizza, pasta pots around. Perfect for all occasions either with the family or friends. I would definitely recommend the Moretti on tap, goes down a treat. After multiple beverages at this fine establishment our wives/ girlfriends are very happy with our early nights.

Having been to the pub for food on numerous occasions I’ve thought a lot before writing a bad review. I booked a table for Sunday lunch with my friend and his daughters. I know these places run low on certain things on Sundays so booked our table for 15:30. On arrival we were directed to our table and told they had one chicken dinner left, roast pork or veggie option. We sat decided on our meals and drinks then headed to the bar to order, around 15:35. When it was my turn to order I was informed that there were no more roast dinners. When I questioned this I was told that they had been very busy, I would have to question the fact that they had bookings but had allowed themselves to run out! We left due to the fact that the rest of the Sunday menu was very limited and I was not looking to have a pizza for my Sunday lunch. Very disappointing.

Had a lovely meal at the Radcliffe Arms with family. Staff friendly and attentive. Gluten free pizza is the best I’ve come across - lovely crispy base which is a rarity with GF pizzas. Delicious mushroom topping too. The 2for1 Monday pizza deal was also a bonus.

We have been to Radcliffe Arms many times since we moved to Hitchin, for meals with friends and also takeaway. It is always fantastic and is our go to for pizzas in Hitchin. They also have a great range of food on the menu, the mac and cheese and brisket being some of our favourites. The staff are always friendly and happy to help, so can’t recommend it enough, a wonderful place to go.

Great food and nice people with a wonderful selection of beer plus a nice terraced garden. Parking available in the local Queen Mother Theatre Car Park. My favourite pub

Christmas meal with friends. Good menu and lovely food. Friendly and efficient staff. Easy to book and lovely festive atmosphere.

I visited today for lunch/dinner with my family My daughter and I ordered the butternut squash and lentil Wellington. On its arrival it looked delicious, a large portion with plenty of vegetables. Unfortunately, it wasn’t what we had expected and we couldn’t eat it. It had an overriding taste of curry which wasn’t mentioned on the menu, we asked the waitress if she could check, but she never came back with an answer. Both my daughter and I do not like curry, therefore would not have ordered this if we had known. It also had a filo pastry top (a Wellington is usually wrapped in pastry) there were chickpeas and spinach in it too. I wonder if this was a dish made up of the chickpea and sweet potato curry with the addition of butternut squash and lentils This was a very disappointing meal out for our family as it was a treat paid for by my son.

Just had a great evening at the Radcliffe - party of 6 of us. The food was really good - esp pizzas, baked garlic prawns, and pork belly bites for starters were scrumptios. The staff were also really good and helpful, and kept smiling and giving excellent service despite being rushed off their feet. Thouroughly recommended

If you love pizza you need to try this place! They have the best pizza in town without doubt in a great pub with really friendly staff! I can’t help but keep going back to this place for their fantastic pizza and great service!

We had a fabulous beer and pizza night at the Radcliffe on Friday. They were very short staffed as I believe there was a staff wedding going on that day and most were at the wedding. We waited a long time at the bar and also for food but you could see Ash and another young lady were working their absolute hardest to get through and serve everyone. Every member of staff worked really hard throughout the entire evening and despite very long wait our food was excellent. We will return again soon. Well done Ash.

Top notch pizza from proper oven. Went on Monday 2-1 pizza night. The manageress on duty (Ash) could not have been more friendly and helpful.

We came in on a Monday night and had 2-4-1 pizza. It was the best pizza I’ve had! The beers were nice as well! We’ll be back again!

The shroom pizza was really delicious and perfectly cooked. Shared some of the cheese hash browns on Liv’s recommendation and they were the best hash browns i’ve ever eaten! Highly recommend this place!

A great meal with my family on Friday evening. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect given the COVID situation but I was really impressed. Had a lovely evening with my daughter here the other night. Pizza was delicious, but the ordering and payment was tricky, it's all done through an app on your phone. I wauld have liked to split the bill, but she ended up paying. I dont really understand why they have this method of ordering in place, it really doesn't save on staff or time.

Came here on a Saturday around 2pm for late lunch as we fancied pizza but wanted to experience something other than a Pizza Express. We definitely chose the right place as the pizzas here were that really excellent Artisan style that you just can’t get from the chains. The pub itself is done up quite nicely but maintains an informal style. The service was friendly, everything ordered and paid by your own phone and the pizzas came out piping hot 10 minutes later. Overall very impressed - would personally return and would definitely recommend to satisfy a pizza craving.

Brought family here for pizza last night. Food was excellent and good value. We dined in the garden area, which is a bit bare and feature-less (no plants or flowers) but was fine. The new ordering procedure - via your smartphone - was, however, rather cumbersome and complicated, especially for larger groups where you essentially have to become waiters yourself. The actual staff were very pleasant and genial but this new post-Covid ordering system is impersonal, fiddly and takes the shine of what otherwise would be a perfect night out. Of course, coronavirus means changes but this new mandatory mode of interaction was not really flagged on the website, so we weren't warned about it.

One of our favourite pubs before lockdown, which also did some great stuff during (fruit and veg boxes, beer by the crate, ready meals, etc). It was lovely to be back – the pizzas were even better than I remembered, the outdoor area is really pleasant and the staff are super friendly. Thank you!

I'm really missing being abnle to pop into the Readcliffe as all pubs are shut during teh Coroina crisis. I've had a number of pizza meals with friends here all of which were great - crispy, from a real wood fired oven with some really inventive toppongs. Beats Pizza Express pomposity into a cocked hat. Had a couple on Monndays where at 2 pizzas for £10 it has to be the best bargain in town. Beer range is great as you woudl exepct forpm a Charles Wells pub. Pizzas nos shut for takeaway as well - doing teh right thing in protecting their staff. Last i heard they were using their food supply links to porvide "care packages" of food and ingredients to customers who would find it difficult to get to s Supermarket. hope it opens again soon

My cold heart has thawed. I’ve been grumpy for a few years because I loved the vibe of the Radcliffe in its previous guise. Couple this with the first time I went to the new version and only found Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio by the glass, it’s safe to say I haven’t been a fan. We revisited today though, and I’ve finally thawed. The food was excellent. I appreciate being able to eat a nice one-pot meal whilst the rest of the family gorge on pizza. The wine menu hasn’t improved, but I’ll give them a pass based on the excellent food and service. Please do though consider other wines by the glass!

I quite like this place; I was worried when they rebranded, but bar staff are friendly, and the pizza menu was really good - it also has a good private room that's good for large groups.The only real problem is that if you go in the winter without a booking, often the selection of tables is very limited due to the number of reservations that have been made.

Lovely get together with friends..nice relaxed atmosphere. Good selection of beers..settled on the Ghostship which is always a favourite. We had a mix of pots and pizzas. The chilli con carne went down well as did the aloha pizzas. I actually loved my squidward pizza with squid rings, mussels and samphire. It was supposed to have prawns but they seemed to be hiding somewhere..didn't worry me too much but if you were a.big fan then you might have been a bit miffed! We looked at the dessert menu but sadly left it a bit too long and they'd stopped serving. The sorbet and ice cream options sounded good though. There was a singer with guitar this evening who was pretty good. I think that maybe a regular Friday night thing Will happily return...

Popped in here tonight for a pint for the first time. Left waiting at the bar for 10 minutes whilst the bar staff ignored me - it wasn’t busy. Finally served by the most surly barmaid ever. No courtesy whatsoever. Needless to say - I won’t be returning.

Conosciamo il Radcliffe da quando frequentiamo Hitchin. In 7 anni abbiamo visto cambiare diverse gestioni. Tre anni fa ci aveva entusiasmato quella che aveva alzato il livello del locale ad un ristorante con cucina di alta qualità. Evidentemente non ha avuto fortuna. Il locale è rimasto poi chiuso per un po' di tempo e ne avevamo perso memoria. Oggi siamo tornati e lo abbiamo trovato completamente cambiato con un ritorno alla tradizione del tipico pub inglese nell'arredamento, nel servizio informale, nella proposta dei piatti, nell'introduzione della. cottura della carne (pork), nella salsa di accompagnamento, nella varietà di verdure. Buona la birra. Da migliorare il gelato poco gustoso, industriale e troppo "gelato". Unico appunto le carte dei menù: logori e persino un poco sporchi. Mi torneremo sperando di trovarli...all'altezza della cucina!

Visited on a Monday - turns out 241 pizza.which was a great deal. Pizzas were pretty good - not a wow, but I did accidentally choose a vegan one,so no cheese. Was a long wait - about an hour, so be prepared to wait if busy. Nice atmosphere in the pub. Will come again.

Eaten here a few times now and always had amazing food and service. There’s something on the menu for everyone and the kids portion sizes are great value for money. 2-4-1 pizza on a monday is a always a winner!

Visited with family and we were all pleasantly surprised at just how good the Pizzas were, we ordered 5/6 different pizzas and all were cooked perfectly and went down well. I came here with my family for dinner. I've lived in hitchin for a while but never been to this pub, and seeing as it's recently had new management we decided to try it out. the food was much better than expected and also good value. A waitress called Maisie was very efficient and sweet to us, and brought out all the food in good time. I'll be going again very soon.

Not a local, but we come when we're in the area. Every time we visit Hubby and I love the atmosphere, the staff are stunningly attentive, sport on the TV's and the food is great. Last time we came was during the 6 Nations and we shared a special French themed pizza. We were served by Christopher and he went above and beyond making sure to find us when a table was available and generally looking after our every need.

Went on a Monday evening for the 2 for 1 pizza deal. It was very good. Also enjoyed the relaxed feel and friendly service. I know where I will be going next Monday evening!

Sat outside in one of the shelters...given the hot weather the shade was welcome and meant we could enjoy being outside.

The Radcliffe has very kindly let us use their Music Room every Wednesday for the past few months, and it’s been the perfect venue! It’s a great space, very well decorated, and even includes board games and a TV. The staff are so lovely and friendly, and always go out of their way to make us feel welcome. The food is amazing, we’ve managed to work our way through the whole menu, and would highly recommend the Donald pizza (duck on a pizza, what more could you want?!) and the salads are definite winners too. Overall it’s a brilliant local pub, and I think the staff really make it :)

Called in for pizza without making a reservation on a Saturday night - although it was really busy the staff managed to find us a table after only a short wait and the service was over and above what you’d expect at a local pub. The pizza was delicious and provision of a takeaway box for leftovers was appreciated! Thanks, will definitely come again

Strange to return to a pub where I used to be in the darts team and knew everyone and it is now completely changed. Good news - the beer is better the loos aren’t a horror show like they used to be and it serves good food. Bad news there’s no dart board, cribbage or Eddie and Nell the publicans I loved. Bottom line - I will return after a long time not wanting to.

Good pizza, relaxed atmosphere and good range of beers and wines. Could be more comfortable and warmer but Its usually busy and with lots of offers and events nobody seems to mind. Our local!

Came in on Friday with a group of friends for drinks on the way back from the station, really friendly bar staff and such a good atmosphere, like the fact it’s not to loud so we could actually catch up properly. We hadn’t planned to order food but as we saw the pizza coming out we couldn’t resist, my friend was so happy she could have a pizza because they do a vegan cheese! I also have to mention the Mac and Cheese which was to die for!! So glad we came in as I’ve found my new favourite pub, we’ve even booked in to bring the kids next weekend as the waitress said they are very family friendly.

Excellent gluten free pizza, which isn't easy. Cross contamination could be a risk, as with all pizza ovens. Staff were friendly and efficient, and offered a box for leftovers without prompting. Fun interior and decor. Not so keen on the tin trays - what's wrong with a plate? We will go again.

Was taken here on the weekend for food after a few beers in the town. Sharers were very nice and was the lasagne, can't wait to try the pizza another time! Excellent choice of beers too.

We popped in on a rainy night and ordered pizza. You can't go wrong with a place that has a open fire pizza oven. There was plenty of other items on the menu to choose, but we stuck with pizza.

We were excited to visit the RA for our anniversary. Sadly our meal was disastrous on every level: its only success was in delivering more money to a pub that clearly puts profit before all.

I never and still haven’t ever understood why this place was changed from what was a perfectly great pub, serving absolutely great and locally sourced food to a ‘pizza and pints’ place?!?!?!???, obviously the demand wasn’t there?!, the former radcliffe arms was really, really good....just don’t get it!!! Prices are cheap here, but i think that’s reflected in the type of food served here!!

Been meaning to come here since it opened but haven’t until now but must say super impressed with everything, got chatting to your fab pizza chef Jamie, so professional, he made me the most awesome pizza, not a huge fan of pizzas normally but these were so fresh and tasty! My partner loved the real ales! Definitely by returning soon! Thanks again to Jamie!!

We popped in for some lunch on a Saturday afternoon and first off, the menu is super interesting, pizzas are made in a woodfire oven and the have a gfree option, which is ideal.. when we ordered, I didnt realise that my pizza didn't have any cheese and when it arrived, even although it looked beautiful, I could help being dissapoint as I was expecting cheesy slices of heaven.. I then proceeded to be that annoying customer and asked our waitress if I could just send my pizza back and add cheese but she refused as she wanted to ensure that I wouldn't burn, so offered to replace it with new pizza, cheese included at no extra cost! It was delicious and I was very greatful..happy customer!!

Good beer, rather limited menu that changes quite regularly. Pizza is served on aluminium plates that set my teeth off ! My partner won't eat pizza here because of the plates.

Just been back here for the first time since it changed hands and I wish I’d come back sooner. The menu is really good. The pizzas are great and I had the mackerel, which is the nicest thing I’ve eaten in a long time. A nice selection of beers and gins. Such enthusiastic and attentive staff, good food and drinks and friendly atmosphere. Ashley behind the bar looked after us all night and Chris saved the day when one of our party felt unwell. All praise to the management and their team.

Visited with a friend who was with us for the day from out of the area. It was unusually quiet but we made the most of this and sat outside in the glorious sun. There was a great selection of drinks, both alcoholic and soft; all served cold. The menu caters for gluten free, vegetarian and vegan and offers pizzas and “pots” (hot oven-cooked dishes). We ordered and were served hot, appetising dishes within 10 minutes. Staff were friendly and helpful, and providing us with pizza boxes for leftovers was no trouble at all to them. We had no kids with us but there were games inside and several guests had kids with them. Highly recommended: I can’t inagine why it wasn’t busier! We will be back. Soon!

The worst Cesar salad I had ! My partner’s food was way too hot ! Terrible waiting service ! Can’t order drinks at the table with your meal ! The staff tells you to do it at the bar ! Good pizza though ! Don’t think we will be coming back here anytime soon !

The Radcliffe is great for meals and just going for pub drinks. Whenever you walk past, you smell the pizza oven, and it tastes as delicious as it smells, especially the GF pizzas!!

Great Sunday lunch. The roast belly pork was melt in the mouth. Served with a good selection of vegetables. The beef was voted equally good. There is a desserts menu too. Sat inside as too hot outside for the baby, but staff opened doors so as to maximise any breeze. Staff were professional and yet friendly and welcoming.

We had a very good lunch at The Radcliffe, good to see the local pub back up and running, staff were very hospitable and friendly and the pizza was spot on!

I've been here several times in its various incarnations but I was very impressed tonight. Monday is a 2 for 1 pizza night and my girlfriend and I had a pizza each and 2 beers each and the bill was well under £30. The pizzas were thin crust and straight out of the oven and absolutely delicious - we both finished all of them. Service was friendly and prompt - nothing to fault and we had a great evening for slightly more than we spend on an average takeaway. I'm actually surprised the place was only half full - we will certainly be back on a Monday. Very impressed.

We visited here for a family roast Lunch and it was very nice - the beef was cooked to perfection and it was a good size portion. The service needed a little bit of improvement as had to ask for dessert cutlery and the tables outside were full of ash from the night before. However I would return for a good Sunday roast

Took the fam to the recently refurbished Radcliffe Arms. Have drunk there since the refit but not eaten. Was really impressed by the friendly service and great food. Kids had some gorgeous stone-baked pizzas (the pizza oven is something else). I had the pork belly (also cooked in the pizza oven) Sunday roast. Cracking. My wife had a veggie Thai dish. All fantastic. Being a Charlie Wells pub they also have some great beers on tap. I loved the old Racliffe but the new owners have really breathed life into the place and on this basis of yesterday’s trip deserve to succeed!

Called in on a whim with no planning. We wanted a table for 4, the bar staff were very welcoming, beers were spot on. We waited about 10 minutes for the staff to get us a table in a busy pub which was great as we could chat and have a drink.

Not been since the refurbishment, and went in for a meal/drink during a weekday. Menu was broader than we expected, the food was tasty and well prepared and the staff welcoming. Fully intend to visit again.
