Four Leaf Clover in North Hertfordshire

Used to go here a lot and there were two lovely girls waiting thr tables, one cook and the senior man overseeing it all. Today we visited and no adult apart from the cook. Three young waiting staff who were clueless. Two breakfasts and two hot drinks. One drink came, they forgot the other one and dive minutes later they finally realised. Breakfasts arrived but no toast, another five minute wait and was plonked down unceremoniously without a word. Finally someone should tell the young boy in there to get his mum to put new elastic or a belt on because he kept his joggers half way down his backside and they kept slipping off, constantly adjusting them slightly up so his pants were in show. Not appropriate for serving in a cafe. Overall service was downhill but food still good.

Food average but cleanliness is a problem. We visited about 10.30am Wife dropped a glove on the floor bent done to pick it up and had a bit of dry food stuck to it. Obviously the floor hadn't been cleaned from the day before. Asked to use the toilet and was greeted with a stained toilet pan and unclean floor. Also the passage to the toilet was filthy. Won't be going back again

Living in North London has made visiting Hitchin a convenient and enjoyable weekend trip, especially on market days. Every few weeks, we make the journey and like to begin the day with a pit stop at a coffee shop before exploring the market. We've tried several artisanal, organic, and modern coffee shops in the area but, to be honest, we haven't found anything that quite hits the spot. The combination of sourdough, sour coffee, and high prices seems to be a common theme. Sometimes, you just can't beat a good old-fashioned fry-up and a decent cup of coffee. As the saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." We've had breakfast at the same spot a few times now. It's nothing too fancy, but the service is quick, the portions are filling, and the prices are reasonable. We usually order either the Mediterranean or full English breakfast, and they always come out perfectly fine.

I visited The Four Leaf Clover. Tasty food and good value. If I visit Hitchin again I shall definitely eat there.

I visit regularly and am surprised by some of the poor ratings on other reviews. It's a popular spot with great service in my experience. One of the few traditionalist breakfast cafes in the area. The menu is extensive, I can't comment on the non-breakfast items but would certainly recommend for a fry-up.

There were many red flags to eating at this place but we ignored them all…so some may say it’s our own fault. The place wasn’t very clean, and the few people in the cafe were NOT eating just having a coffee. We soldiered on. The waiter struggled with our order and when it did come it was vile. One of the meals had so much salt dumped on it that it felt it had taken a quick dip in the northern sea! I will give this place a some kudos as they have created a gravy that can be cut….which to be fair was new to me and maybe I’m just not ready for such a culinary experience…..had I been lost at sea or just survived a horde of zombies at the beginning of the apocalypse I and this place was the only one open in the entire south of the UK I would still not eat here again.

Unfortunately, I'm disappointed with this place. I believe it's had a revamp as when I came here a couple of years ago, I remember it being very different. It used to be more of a wholesome greasy spoon, and now I feel it's trying to be a bit too posh. The drinks are more expensive than other places like this. The food was a reasonable price but more than I would pay for the quality if I'm honest. I had a prawn jacket potato, and unfortunately it was incredibly underwhelming. The potato itself was cooked very well, but the filling was miserable. A few prawns on the side with an overpowering thick sauce. I had to leave half of the potato because there was only filling to go with half of it (so not a lot) and the rest dry. The salad was a generous portion, but was ruined with the awful vinaigrette that was on it. The kids meal (fish fingers, chips and beans) was a good size and was fairly good quality. My partner had a burger, it was medioka. Although, the service was fantastic and the atmosphere was nice, as well as the music.

Looking for a nice place to eat and this cafe just round the corner from our hotel looked really nice and clean from the outside. Ordered tea and coffee which arrived quickly and always nice to get tea in a pot. However, jacket potato with chilli and a salad whilst looking lovely was hard all around the outside of the potato. Sent back to kitchen but second attempt only made it harder and like eating rubber. Partner had the Turkish sausage omelette which was very nice but not sure made with the three eggs as advertised as rather small and thin. Did not charge for the jacket but it took a little persuading for them to decide this option. Wouldn’t be going back which is a shame as staff were all very pleasant.

The breakfast baguette was good but the cottage pie was awful. It looked like it had been thrown from a distance and it had mixed with the salad dressing so tasted of vinegar.

Great little traditional cafe. Had the special breakfast which is a full English with toast and also had an Americano coffee. Good quality coffee and breakfast and good value for money. Second visit and recommend.

Wonderful everything!! After few years , i give again 5 *..but I wish to give 10*. Amazing food, very clean, very friendly ! I recommend to all my friends! Thank you very much indeed.

I ordered a spaghetti and when it came to my table, i asked if i could have parmasan cheese, but i was told they do not have it and was given Cheddar cheese instead. The meal was tasteless and looked more like a soup. It was awful food with a chef who could not careless what she was cooking and serving. Hitchin is a place that has a food festival and here is a restaurant that serves awful food. I urge people to steer clear of this place as there are many many restaurants that do good food, waiters look embarrassed by serving such awful food and have the cheek to ask if the food is ok, i replied honestly that the food was bad and the only thing that was good was the bottle of beer i had. Don't waste your money in this place.

The presentation was shoddy. The toast wasn't toasted the fried bread wasn't fried. Was a real let down.

Very nice restaurant and we will be going back. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Food is great value for money and tastes lovely very impressed with this place. 10 out of 10 all round

Food turned up at separate points and didn’t turn up as ordered. Drinks were warm and just generally food was just ok. Would go elsewhere next time

My partner and I were holidaying here from Australia. We walked passed with this restaurant with a good signage outside the food they were serving. So we dine it for our daily breakfast whilst in Hitchin. To our surprise, the food was terrible "Absouletely Terrible". The liver was burned- overcooked like a rubber, the bubble and squeak was gluggy, and the fresh avocado was not even ripe at all....it was hard as cantaloupe. I was being told after it was not ready. Seriously, are you gonna serve something that is not ready to your customer when you knew it beforehand! Terrible! Please do not come and dine to this restaurant at all. Do not be deceived with their signage displayed outside since it was a completely different from the meal we had. What a waste of money, time and experience! Get your so called "Chef" sorted.

Baked potato perfect, tuna, with really nice side salad. Can be a rarity to get the combination just right, and few places in Hitchin offer this for lunch, but Fourleaf Clover delivered. Tea coffee poached eggs all good too. Very quick friendly service. Thank you

Rude staff . Bad hospitality with a bunch of moody teenagers running the place. The food is terrible and wouldn’t be fed to a dog. I asked for my bread to be changed as I did ask for brown bread and was given white. To later witness the pot washer eating it in front of me, I was shocked! God knows what else they do with their food. Both me and my children left with food poisoning and so seriously ill we are still taking antibiotics. I’d warn anyone to avoid this place! The seats even felt sticky and unclean and the toilets were even worse! Clearly they don’t do hourly toilet checks or regular cleaning because there was a dirty old old tampon in the girls bathroom when I took my daughter disgusting. 0 stars

Easter Sunday day out in Hitchin. Found this delight in the Town Square. Loads of people enjoying a beautiful sunny day. Plenty of outdoor seating and tables. Simple menu. Bacon in a warm baguette with butter, a cheese and ham panini and choc chip shortbreads. All delicious and only £15 inc drinks. Friendly happy attentive staff. Toilets available at the Four Leaf Clover. Recommended…..

The food was the worst thing I have ever seen Absolutely rank. Even my dog wouldn’t eat the sausage. Ten soggy old chips that seemed like they had been sitting about for days half a tomato 2 bits of bacon mostly fat and looked gross. Plastic fried egg and don’t know if the one piece of toast was fried bread or toast that had soaked up all the grease! Don’t know how anyone who runs a cafe can put their Name to that ! Expensive too Don’t waste ya money here find another cafe

On Sunday, wanted a nice hot breakfast at 11.30am, so we walk past 4 Leaf Clover and asked if they still served breakfast this late. Waiter was very polite, took our order and we had a large plate of Four Leaf Vegetarian Breakfast. Enjoyed the hot breakfast, well presented, swift service.

Truly awful food. I mean the food would have been poor at any price but considering the prices are higher than cafes in central London this place really is poor. The sausages are the cheapest known to man. I've genuinely had nicer out of a microwave meal. Cod and chips tasted as though out of a microwave. Also the peas were almost grey barely green at all. And the cafes missing a trick as no condiments out so have to use sachets. A good portion of ketchup is the only hope to make the food palatable. The waitress was nice and the cafe itself is pleasant to look at but I'd be absolutely amazed if anyone visits this place more than once

Ordered and didn’t take items off we requested off poor quality sausages compared to when I used to come here 3 years ago really wasn’t happy with the breakfast really gutted as I used to come here every weekend and it has changed

This was my 3rd time eating at this restaurant, the first 2 times I ate in and on Sunday I had a takeaway. All 3x times I had the same dish which was Liver & Bacon served with chips & Each time it was Absolutely Delicious as not everyone knows how to cook liver properly I was pleasantly surprised, compliments to the chef. I found the staff to be friendly & cordial. This restaurant has an extensive menu with something to suit all taste & budgets.

We came for a cheap and cheerful breakfast, what could go wrong? They gave us the wrong breakfast, charged us the wrong amount despite us clarifying with the waitress when we ordered that we wanted the deal in window. Charged us extra for a side that said was included on the menu. Tap water was dirty and mosquitoes inside the place. No apologies for any of their mistakes. Would rather pay more to go elsewhere. Avoid!

Popped in for some lunch on a Sunday a few weeks ago and it was great! Really reasonably priced. Kept 3 generations happy. Service was very quick. The milkshakes were particularly good - between us we had banana (which contained real banana) a chocolate one and some of the chocolate bar ones (Milky Way and kinder bueno I think) which were great. Will be visiting again in future.

Hair in food in friends food from cook, service was slow despite not busy

The eggs was hardly cooked, the bacon was only just done and same with the hash browns and avocado was not ripe. Terrible service from the waiter and will not be returning. Don’t mean to be over the top but it ruined my morning

Great place best breakfast in Hitchin

Food portions are poor, when I pay £8.50. Just chuck more mushrooms & beans in. Definitely not worth £8.50.

This isvthe third visit in recent weeks and I am very impressed with the cleanliness of the place, the excellent service of the waitress and the quality of the food.

My girlfriend and I ordered two milkshakes, the farmhouse burger and the grilled chicken with a side of onion rings (which came with salad - not specified on the menu). The milkshakes were nice and the burger was mediocre. The onion rings were soggy and the grilled chicken (lemon flavoured, which wasn't specified on the menu) later made my girlfriend throw up. The staff were impolite as well - when my girlfriend told the waitress we wanted to split the bill, she looked at her like she had two heads. The waitress also seemed patronising when asked about the onion rings. Not recommended.

Food never even arrived. No contact from the driver if they were lost. Extremely disapointed

Young girl behind the counter had the worst attitude for no reason.

29/04/2022 - Ordered a plain cheese toastie on white bread. It came with onions in it, so we sent it back. The cook had a real attitude problem and sent back the toastie with the onions literally picked out. The onions could still be tasted (obviously!) so I had to ask for a fresh one… Due to the attitude of the chef, I won’t be returning.

Sausage looked like it had a disease, my Oreo milkshake never came, the food was cold, the toast was soggy and the beans were cold

Food was... fine, nothing special. Milkshakes were awful, clearly some kind of cheap powdered thing. Would not bother again.

Good service from this family run cafe, speedy service with numerous choices on the menu to suit most diners, prices average and not too expensive either.

Don’t order the Pancakes and bacon with maple syrup was supposed to be maple syrup came out like toffee and the whole plate was Inedible I told them a couple of times about this and they just didn’t seem to care they was still quite happy for me to pay full price for something that Was quite frankly a joke!

For the price the food is perfect. The venue is spotless and comfy with pleasant background music. Staff were well mannered and helpful. Food cooked well. In summary this is a far better option than visitng the nearby wetherspoons die to similar prices but More variety and personal service here. They also custard Nd have a decent desert. Menu

Looks very nice, no menu had to ask , the lasagne portion was tiny, the breakfast adequate, service ok. I tried to pay but got ignored as, who I took to be the manager was to busy chatting on his phone, so I went to the loo returned, he was still on his phone ignoring his customers. Finally got the waitress to take the money. Not the best cafe in Hitchin .

Special breakfast at £4.50 was awful. The bacon and egg was hard. Cappacino was ok, and the staff member who served me looked surprised when I didn't tip him and went silent and didn't even say goodbye. Shame as previous breakfast was delicious - won't be ever returning here for breakfast ever again. Not recommended👎

The food was alright (although omelette looked like it was cooked in old butter, dark bits from previous food). However the cleanliness of the inside of the ladies toilet was far from acceptable for a restaurant. It always makes me question the rest of the place. I'm talking about the interior (walls, heavily stained/sticky doors etc) of the toilet, not the actual toilet itself. I'm afraid we won't come back... Shame

Disappointed. After numerous visits over the past 3 years for breakfast we decided to try a late lunch. Very few customers so attended to quickly by one of the very young girls waiting the tables. Considering the lack of customers the drinks took a while to appear. A budget red wine followed several minutes later by a very warm mango juice. Meals arrived several minutes later; mediocre cottage pie and vegetables and lamb chops, mash and peas. While just adequate both meals were lacking in both quality and quantity. Settling the bill didn’t add any pleasure to the experience, little interaction from the girl behind the counter and I believe we were overcharged. An underwhelming experience not to be repeated in the near future. New management? Profit over customer satisfaction? Unimpressed.

This place has become a favourite for breakfast. Always really clean, food is fresh and tasty and the two young girls are very efficient.

Extremely disappointed on this visit, have been before , it was lovely. This time 2 meals out of 4 incorrect and one of those went back twice....I probably won't return, which is a shame!

Late lunch on a busy Saturday in hitchin but cafe was less than half full so definitely not busy. Sat outside in the cold since we had the dog. Two teas arrived. Both saucers had chips (health hazard) & my cup was just dirty & i had to go back indoors for a clean one. Long wait for tasty panninis by which time the tea was cold. No apologies for chipped crockery which should now be binned. Given the choice of eating places in Hitchin, we would not return.

We stopped in here for a quick coffee and ended up having a snack as well. The food (a panini and a hot baguette) were very good and at a very good price. The coffee was good too. Service was fine and they are well organised for Covid with clear screens between each of the tables and plent of space.

Food was excellent! The restaurant is cosy. The young waiter was nice but his very dirty trainers let him down. The young waitress had no character and didn't dare crack a smile and could do with with customer service training. The food and the occasional smile from who I assume was the manager was this place saving grace. Only other thing I could pick on was the unnecessary wooden chopping board that the food was served on... But that is more preference I guess.

Decided to take a trip into our local town center to get some breakfast, decided to eat here and unfortunately was a mistake we will not be making again. Firstly the area by the till greeted us with dead roses with small flys hovering around them. The most upsetting thing about it our visit was the food, it was so bad! Everything seemed reheated or microwaved, we really didn’t enjoy it. Your service seemed to be okay apart from the waitress more interested in her phone than checking to see how our meals were. Please take my advice and do not eat here.

Good freshly cooked food. we had omelettes. Despite other comments, they still haven't sortedctge sticky table situation! So only four stars.

Frequent flyer to the FLC but first review. This is a nice cafe just off market square. It’s a must do whenever I’m in town with the kids. The children’s meals are a decent price, the adult breakfasts and omelettes are pretty good and the jacket spuds always nice. Jewel in the Crown is the milkshakes which both kids and adults love, great variety and mixed with the favourite chocolate bars. Staff are always really friendly and helpful. Knock a star off as the coffee and the breakfast sausages could be a little better but it’s a small issue. It’s a really nice, very clean family run cafe and me and the boys always enjoy coming here

It's our go-to independent cafe. Table service and friendly helpful staff. Reasonable prices. reasons for not 5 stars are loos dated and limited snack choices (my kids tell me).

poor service by moody teenager. The cafe smelled of cooking oil. Food ok but very disappointed as I used to like this cafe. With this level of service it won't last long with Witherspoon a few doors down.

Asking for an Americano with hot milk separately, we got it with 2 pots of cream and the coffee was just warm; asked for another Americano with hot milk, we got it with milk mixed in like a Cappucino. A third asking, we got what we ordered. Meals we ordered were quite nice. On asking for the bill we were told ok. After 10 mins of waiting I asked again. Told "It's coming". After another 10 minutes my hubby went to the counter to ask again. He was then told you pay AT the counter!! Why didn't they tell us this? On being given the receipt after paying, nothing was itemised at all, everything had a code number which was the same! I rated this with 3 stars because the food was ok, but we won't go again.
