We were given excellent service by very friendly & welcoming staff. Our meal was good, honest, home cooked food that was hot & delicious. My husband ordered steak that was cooked exactly to his preference and I ordered lamb shank that fell off the bone. Both meats were tender & juicy. Our dessert was home made blackberry tart, just delicious.

I was driving in unfamiliar landscape and needed some sustenance. Saw the pub sign welcoming campers and everyone so pulled in. I had to admit that first appearance wasn't great. It looks somewhat rundown. This was later explained by the charming landlady that it was their first week of operations since a long, tough lockdown without furlough or funds! So never judge a book... Inside was also old fashioned but clean enough, rustic and welcoming. The food specials for the bank holiday were cheap and simple. I had a cottage pie, salad, peas and chips for a fiver! She boasted all freshly cooked this morning and I certainly wouldn't doubt her. Several other simple satisfying meals and snacks plus a fuller menu for the evening. Perhaps not a place for a flashy date or meal, but a decent supper. Beers were reasonable too, but unfortunately no real ales. Perhaps when season gets going...? Real ales need a short turnover or there's wastage. I'd definitely eat and drink here again and possibly even stay over in my campervan. Good luck to them.

Found this beauty of a place on a pubstopover website as I wanted to stay with my T5 camper. A nice level carpark in a very quiet area with lovely views to wake up to. I didn’t have any food as I arrived quite late, but looking at others reviews I wish I had. Amanda and Neil were looking after the pub whilst her father the landlord was in hospital, they were so friendly it was like being amongst old friends. We sat and chatted all evening and I can honestly say I’ve never been made to feel so welcome by people I’d just met! Their little pooch needs a quick mention too… Trixie is a beautifully well behaved dog, she just wanted to play all evening. Next time I'll bring my Jack Russell too, I'm sure they'd get on great. I promised I’d be back and I will hold myself to it! I couldn’t recommend this place enough!

I love the Racehorse! I love it for its cosiness, its atmosphere and the friendliness of the owners, Ron and Mandy. The food is traditional pub food, but all the ingredients are bought locally and cooked by Mandy, so the quality is excellent. The portions are also generous - something that suits my husband perfectly. I have been here many times, have brought friends here as well as visiting members of my family, and they have all loved it. Ron is a fascinating character - a champion cyclist many years ago - with a wonderful, dry sense of humour. Their Sunday lunch is extremely popular, but you need to book in advance.

After hearing great reviews about the Sunday lunch we went and werent disappointed. Its a set lunch 4 courses for £10. Theres no choice of starters but the vegetable soup which was served was delicious. The roast beef on the main course was so tender. There was a choice of about 6 desserts and then coffee or tea to finish. The pub is dated but has lots of character. The Staff are very friendly. I would highly recommend The Racehorse for Sunday lunch and will be going again.

There is a very odd smell in the entrance of this pub, which is very unappetising. The staff are friendly though, and the food is good. Almost everything comes with chips; this is not a gourmet dining experience. However it doesn't pretend to be posh, so go with the expectation of simple food in a old-fashioned pub and you'll be fine.

Myself and my family hadn’t been to the racehorse in years and it hadn’t changed one bit, the owner Ron greeted us with open arms, what a warm and friendly welcome from all the staff we received too. Food is basic but enjoyable. If you want an old pub atmosphere then The Racehorse Inn is one to visit.

I booked a coach trip to this family run pub for a Taste of Wales Lunch What a delightful time was had by everyone. The food was well presented and hot, pleanty of it, with homemade tart to finish. I must say I was very impressed with the young lady Abbie who was our host at front of house. She was chatty and had a lovely way about her with my elderly guests. She even chatted in Welsh with one of them. Thank you for making it such a memorable visit

Stopped off here in our motor home overnight. Had some food in the evening, and was very impressed by the quality of food and friendliness of the staff. Proper family-run place, with all the friendliness of being a part of their family. Food was nice and in good portion sizes, and the final bill was reasonable. We were going to stop for Sunday lunch, but had to leave earlier than anticipated, which was a little disappointing. Sunday lunch was described as, freshly cooked, straight out the oven to the table. There is one sitting for dinner, again, like being part of the family... would have been fantastic... but we had to go :(. We will be back to try the meal at some time in the future. Lovely hosts and great food, highly recommended!!

Been past a couple of times, and were prompted to try it after good recommendation from a family friend. We arrived early so were the first customers there, but it soon got busier. The Sunday lunch is a set menu, but the meal was excellent. We rarely have starters, but the vegetable soup was delicious. For the main course, it was pork and beef, which were tender and tasty, with a traditional choice of veg, plus gravy. The desserts were really nice too, all served nice and hot, by very friendly staff. The pub may be old fashioned, but in a good way, and with an interesting collection of sporting memorabilia as well, all adding up to give the place a unique character. Hopefully we will be back soon (Ron, we did warn you - that's a promise!)

What a fantastic little inn... Hidden away on the mountain we were taken to this little treasure by friends we were visiting.. The car park was full which is an obvious sign of a good place.. On entering it was like stepping back in time to an old style pub.. This is not a negative it was so nice to go somewhere where you felt welcomed from the moment we spoke to the friendly gentleman at the bar until a handshake on leaving by the lovely gentleman that owns the inn. ( coming from a city, that is something we are not used too !! The gentleman at the bar remembered our drinks exactly as we ordered them first time and the lady who took our order was very good and explained that a large party had just arrived and she was happy to take our order as soon as we were ready so we would not have to wait too long which we really appreciated. The gentleman who cooked our meal (who we later found out was the owner) came and spoke to one of our party who had special requests. To clarify the way the meal had been ordered... This is something we have never experienced previously. We would definitely be visiting this little Beaty again on our next visit to the area..Well done to all involved at this little treasure you should be very proud of the service and ambience you offer.. We look forward to seeing you again.

Fawlty towers experience but the food is exceptional, home cooked and excellent value. Tried many local establishments for Sunday lunch before work and this is by far the best. Some could take offence to the proprietor when booking via telephone but he is very nice when you get there albeit not that cheerful. You have to be there 12.45 to sit down to lunch at 13.00. The only choice you get is with dessert which I did find strange the first time we went. Soup and bread roll to start. Two meats and usual accompaniments followed by a choice of home made fantastic seasonal desserts at a price of £19.30 for two. Awesome food, amazing value. We are regular visitors now. Just had a wonderful meal with a friend. Ron and Mandy had gone all out to create a spooktacular Halloween setting in the restaurant. We were greeted by an animatronic waiter with a scary repertoire of phrases direct from the Adam's Family script department. The food was as outstanding as usual. When my husband's rump steak arrived our friend's eyes nearly popped out of his head as he had never seen a steak that big without horns on it. It was superb, so tender it melted in your mouth. I ordered Cauliflower Cheese as a main course as I had no intention of missing out on my dessert. We had a warm welcome from Ron at dinner on a Monday night. There isn't much open in Blaenevan on Monday's so this was a great find. The food is home cooked by Ron and the serves are enormous. We had the Duck a la Orange and the lamb shanks - both very good. Ron is a great storyteller and and a real character and we had an enjoyable evening!

Driving across the Brecons we were desperately looking for a place for lunch at just before two in the afternoon. Saw this pub and noticed it shut at two but decided to try on the off chance we would be able too pick up a sandwich at least. Spoke with the publican who said he could do us a Sunday lunch but apologised as it would be the leftovers from the lunch service. We'll the three course meal was excellent, not fine dining perhaps, but a Sunday lunch you would have been proud to cook at home. Excellent portions for the even the trencherman among us. The landlord and his team made us very welcome and he himself had a wonderfully dry sense of humour. I would thoroughly recommend this inn as a place to eat well cooked tasty food.

Had a meal here in December 2013 and only just remembered to review. Food was excellent with huge portions and great value (about £11 for a main). Beer was nice and obviously well kept. Staff were very friendly and pub was very warm and inviting. Basically all you want for a nice night out in a country pub. Have already recommended to friends and we will return ourselves when we get the chance. Top class.

Went to the Racehorse Inn this Friday at very short notice, ALL the staff were very friendly and the hospitality was excellent. The food as usual was hearty, well cooked, good for value food. I have also taken my children aged 6 and 13, which were welcomed! I highly recommend the Racehorse, they don't tolerate bad mannered, offensive people and rightly so when your out for quality time with loved ones!! Well done to Ron and his family xx

This Inn is characterised by a very attentive owner, who it can be seen enjoys his work and does everything possible to ensure that the home cooked meals are of the highest quality both in appearance and taste. The eating area was nice, warm and welcoming on a day when the outside temperature was 2 degrees.Photos on the walls, of well known celebrities testify to the facts already stated. We look forward to our next visit there, even if it a round trip of 80 miles.

Me and my partner have visited this place on a few occasions and each time we've had a lovely evening. The pub is very cosy (ideal for couples and families) and the food is fantastic. The portions are enormous and the price is very reasonable. The highlights of my visits have certainly been the peppered steak and the mixed grill - which probably contains the equivalent amount of meat as a small farm!A special mention must go to the host too: on the occasions we've visited he has always made a fuss of me and my girlfriend, and comes over to chat. I don't think I've ever met a more accommodating owner!Overall I would recommend The Racehorse in a heartbeat!

This place is awful. It is very old and uninviting with hard benches to sit on. We went for a birthday celebration and out of four of us only one enjoyed they're food. Two people ordered a peppered steak which when it came smelt and tasted awful. I had ordered a garlic bread for a side dish and it wasn't cooked properly, the garlic butter wasn't melted. We asked for the menus to order something else and the owner came out to tell us that he sells loads of these steaks and couldn't understand what was wrong. He wouldn't bring us the menus and took the steak away to wash them and returned them with a separate pepper sauce. The pepper sauce on its own was lovely but the steak were awful. They smelt like the meat was off! One of our guests took the steak home for her dog and even the dog turned her nose up at it and wouldn't eat it. The garlic bread when it was returned still wasn't cooked properly and we left without eating much. The owner didn't charge us for one of the steaks but he was not happy we didn't like his food. All in all, I would never return here, not even for a drink. The owner needs to realise that the customer is always right and improve his customer service skills big time if he wants his business to survive in this day and age. Would certainly not recommend.

As on every other occasion Chris and I have visited, service with a smile and nothing too much trouble. We are always treated as friends, not just customers. Always, freshly cooked food and ample portions served without having to wait. Mandy and Ron make you at home as soon as you arrive, this is the way pubs used to be, sadly few and far between these days.

The food is fantastic, and an absolute breath of fresh air in an age of plastic-cartoned meals warmed in microwaves that seem to be the norm nowadays thanks to chains such as Frankie and Bennys, Harvester, etc. All home cooked, massive portions and great value! And like so many others have said in their own reviews, it's lovely to visit a place where you're treated as a friend and not just a customer. I would recommend a visit, alone, just to meet Ron - he is quite a character and had us in stitches all night!A fancy restaurant, this is not - but I guarantee you will not enjoy a better evening elsewhere.

Absolutely dreadful! The whole pub stank of stale cheap beer, the meals were served wrongly or with added bits of things that weren't ordered :(!! On the plus side I was given a complimentary bottle of wine for my birthday lol! Absolutely fab company in awful conditions! Oh, and no mobile signal lol :( x

This pub is situated to the north of Blaenafon (note not Abergavenny) with some stunning views across towards the Sugar Loaf. The Valleys have so much to offer visitors and the town of Blaenafon is a great example with Big Pit a must. You need to visit this unique part of the world. Where they have lacked in the recent past is the offer for good food and accommodation but that is changing with more and more locations rising to the challenge.Sadly, the Racehorse is well off the pace if my recent visit is typical. The welcome is warm as one would expect in the valleys, but the food was poor and expensive for what it is. The menu is fairly extensive but would perhaps benefit from doing fewer things better. I took two people from Europe with me and none of us finished our plates. At least the beer from the Celt Brewery was good.Sort it out and this could be a location to aim for.

We celebrated my Aunty's birthday here and we had a great time! The service was great and entertaining. The owner was a joker and it really made the night fun. The food was great, there were choices for everyone but maybe a bigger menu could be beneficial. The desserts were amazing, my grandfather couldnt speak because he enjoyed it so much!Good value for money and wehope to return soon!

I've had a few meals at The Racehorse recently and must say that I've never been disappointed. All the food is freshly cooked to order and very tasty. Even though the prices are very reasonable, the portions are very generous and Ron's whimberry tart, made with berries gathered from the local mountainside, is a must try dish for visitors to this part of the world. If you're looking for a traditional pub that serves good quality food at a fair price then The Racehorse is well worth a visit!

I don't know where the last reviewer was on about but it almost certainly wasn't here! We popped in off the cuff & were greeted like regulars, extremely warm welcome & friendly service made us feel comfortable straight away.We ordered a lot of food ranging from side dishes to the main courses because we weren't aware of the portion size, lets just say the sides were not eaten! I think people get carried away when reviewing, this is not Hestons restaurant nor does it claim to be, however if you want a brilliant meal in a great venue with lovely people then this is for you.I'd say the only negative was that I didn't have space to eat it all!If we are ever in the vicinity again ill make sure we stop here.

Don't make the mistake of thinking The Racehorse is just another run of the mill pub with chips spilled on the side yes portions are huge but this is one of the few places that can mix quantity with quality also 13.75 for a 16oz rump is incredible value

We visited the Racehorse inn on the 23rd of December for our 23rd wedding Anniversary as a treat from our children. A very warm welcome from the owner and other staff, the food was excellent and we all left with very full tummys. Recieved a free bottle of wine as a gift for our Anniversary. The pub itself was decorated for Christmas and really got us in the Christmas spirit! A lovely treat, will definitely be returning and would recommend a visit to anyone.
