Stayed for one night. Paid on arrival and then told there was a pool match on below our room but it would be finished by 11pm. It was still ongoing at 11.30 and no sign of it finishing. We complained twice about the noise. The next day the manager rang and apologised and said we had been offered a change of room. Which was a lie. We would have gladly accepted a change to get some sleep. Wouldn't stay again.

Visiting Ullswater and dropped in on off chance of a table on Saturday - nice little pub with a traditional feel and fairly busy even early in the evening. We had our dog with us which was no problem and they gave us a quiet table - very good service and we both enjoyed our meals. Rump steak cooked very well - juicy and pink, nice chips , crispy and side of coleslaw/salad just right. Steak and mushroom pie very flavoursome as well. Bill was £55 including drinks - pretty reasonable - would definitely return when we are next in the area.

Popped in for drinks after a long walk. Looked at the food menu as we were contemplating food but prices looked expensive. We also bout a couple of drinks, a pint of IPA and a double gin with lemonade, £16.50 which is the most I’ve ever paid.

The mains were dry and smallish with a few nice homemade chips and plain veg . Pies are now a small square from a tray bake gravy on the side at £19 Starters very small but tasty. So a three course meal would be much short of £50 with a couple of drinks

Just don’t bother. One of the worst meals I’ve had in a very long time, honestly didn’t know place were still in business with the poor quality and soooo over priced, obviously know they won’t be getting repeat business, better fleece them when we’ve got em! Should have guessed something was going to be wrong when it was so quiet at prime time at a Saturday.

We visit the area a lot, we have an annual pass at Lowther. Thought we would go elsewhere rather than the cafe, this was a mistake. All three of us had horrible soggy oily chips. The most awful chicken and ham pie which wasn’t mine but looked horrible dry and unappetising, my scampi was ok but generic freezer stuff. With a dodgy soggy side salad. My son had a snack pizza and soggy chips totalling £60+ for three at lunch. Paninis and sandwiches were £14! Someone said on prev review ..it’s the L.District and we should expect these prices. I live in the L.District and this is not the norm. I’m really annoyed my hubby wouldn’t let me say something honestly,

rude staff loud band until midnight we stayed here for a wedding in askham and booked 3 rooms at a cost of £560 and can only say this is this worst place I've ever stayed. The rooms are noisy and poor I am not a snob and usely don't complain but I can't stress how bad this place really is.I must however say the food is good and the whole family enjoyed this but nobody slept at all due to the loud noise.I could probably have accepted the noise but when my wife approached the landlady she was very rude and said we should expect this as the sound of the countryside.be warned stay here at your own risk or if you don't like a quite nights sleep

We stayed here for a week using it as a base to visit other northern lake attractions. We received a lovely welcome from the staff, Simon, Vanessa, and Kelly, and sat down beside a lovely open coal fire whilst they asked if we needed help to unpack the car. We ate every night in the pub as the food was so good, top rate chefs who came out occasionally (when it wasn't really busy) to make sure everything was ok, the range of dishes and specials catered for everyone, meat eaters and veggies alike, and even had a gluten free option on the bread which was a first for me. Our room was fabulous, large king size bed lots of storage space and 'real' toiletries (not them silly small bottles). We were also made to feel welcome by the local people who recommended walks in the local area and other places to visit. The whole atmosphere was completely relaxed, nothing was too much trouble for the staff, and I hope they enjoyed having us as much as we enjoyed their hospitality. We will certainly be back in the summer to enjoy more of the walking and definitely Lowther Castle gardens which we didn't do because of the rain. If you are looking for a relaxed peaceful place then this is it. 5 star hospitality and 5 star food ! The only downside you might have is the phone reception which is poor, but the free wifi made it possible to keep in touch and I found I actually enjoyed not having the phone signal.

The seat on the back was a bit uncomfortable and we would have preferred chairs. we didnt have starters and all had various mains. I had the cock and bull - strips of steak and chicken in a creamy peppercorn sauce. nice but a bit hot rather than creamy. one friend had vietamese curry which she said was good but quite spicy. another the hunters chicken - good. another friend had the started goats cheese tart again good. we all enjoyed the sweets a couple of us had the lemon posset which was really nice.a couple the cheesecake and another the brownie that really did look good. drinks were not a bad price ! think a med wine was about £3.50. enjoyed the meal and would go again.

On Thursday nights my husband and I regularly go for a meal in Penrith or the surrounding area(s). This was our second visit in more recent times and our decision to return was well rewarded. The service was swift and our waitress excellent. And then there was the food .......I started with the Thai Fish Cake with sweet chilli noodles. My choice was based on my previous visit and too good to resist a second time. I wasn't disappointed and it was as hot (temperature) and tasty as it should've been. (Particularly important as I've recently been served soup at a nameless eatery where it was cold as if served from the fridge and someone had forgotten to microwave it!!)I'm not normally very adventurous and tend to choose 'safe' meals that I've had previously. Tonight I chose the previously untried Cock and Bull. It came in a smooth Peppercorn Sauce with rice, which I prefer to eat with a spoon, and I was delighted to savour the succulent beef and chicken with my spoon and fork with no need whatsoever for my knife as it was so tender. The flavour was delicious too.And finally, desert!! I opted for Sticky Toffee Pudding and requested custard with it. As my husband was having custard with his Apple and Blackberry Crumble we were presented with a very generous jug full to share. The size of the portion itself was very generous too and it was as good a Sticky Toffee Pudding as I've ever had.To summarise, each course was 10 out of 10 and I cant say I can remember ever feeling like that about a whole meal in the many years that we have spent 'doing the rounds' of the local restaurants or pub restaurants. To say I can recommend The Punchbowl Inn Askham feels inadequate. A very smiley, happy customer indeed!!!

Went in the pinchbowl, a local in the next village. Heard mixed reviews over the years, but am happy to say I was pleasantly surprised. Started with booking the table, found their email address on trip advisor then send an email to book the table for the night. I was very surprised that I got a reply confirming the booking within a hour or two. We got to the place on time, walked up to the bar and asked to be seated and stated the reservation made. They brought out the book and surprise surprise no booking, ummmmmmA little standing and a pow wow with the staff and we were seated. They could have dropped the ball at that stage, but didn't, well done. The drinks and meals were great, fresh food, lamb was amazing, garlic bread excellent ,my son loved the onion rings, mum loved the pork belly. All around a great meal.As for the prices, don't expect to eat out for less than £100. It's prices reflect the quality of food. Well done to you, great atmosphere also.

Now I'm quite easily pleased BUT the bar staff move at the pace of a slow snail then you find they haven't basic things such as cordials. We had a table booked for Sunday lunch and arrived at 1 o'clock to find out they had no beef, after trying different choices and being told its off the menu we eventually ordered and waited, and waited. The Pigeon, sorry chicken dinner was cold and with very little veg but there was the bonus of a long dark hair, yummy, the Yorkshire pudding looked impressive but turned out to be a soggy pile of s&#t it would have been an ideal starter. The hunters chicken was nice but with no veg or salad and came with a small portion of the wrong fries. The 2 sandwiches came one very soggy and one dry with again the wrong fries. Apart from that every thing perfect and now we are looking for a takeaway. But to be fair we can all have bad days.

Two of us had the Jennings steak and Ale pie, one with chips, one with mash both with 3 fresh vegetables, our third had lightly battered cod and chips. all food freshly cooked, so a short wait, but worth it. We called in here by chance, while travelling around the Pennine villages. It was a gorgeous day and the Punchbowl looks so inviting, with the outdoor tables in the sunshine. We went in to order drinks and the barman was very helpful in explaining the local brews. We browsed the menu and decided on 3 tapas dishes for £19. We ordered a portion of paella, which my husband loves, some parmesan chicken and goujons of fish. The food came quite quickly and was freshly cooked and was mouth wateringly delicious. The barman who served us was most pleasant and chatty and it was a delight to have found this pub in a very pretty village. We shall certainly return when we are next in the area.

We both ordered the lamb rump it was delicious, very tasty..we had a bit of a wait, due to them being short staffed .. But that was fine.Pudding choice was good, we chose coffee infused brownie, and butterscotch cheesecake, both nice, although butterscotch not that tasty for me.Would of liked to see a better ice cream choice, as vanilla, strawberry and chocolate are a bit basic, although there was honeycomb, but some more variety, or special might be good...although to be fair, most places are the same..(I like ice cream!)Got quite busy so best to book if planning to eat.Overall good experience, food was tasty, and good portion.....will return
