I had been in Torquay Saturday night with my wife for a doo, my brother who is 66 had looked after the dog for me.When we came back Sunday I wanted to take my brother for a Sunday roast, our favourite place was fully booked so tried the Pub on the Hoe, admittedly it was early evening but they had free tables, great I thought and I could take the dog.Up we went, ordered the Roast x 3.The food was only warm, not very good at all.The restaurant was not very clean. We will not be going back.

A decent place to stay if visiting Plymouth as it is central for the Hoe area, shops and the Barbican area. Reasonable price for an overnight stay in a decent, if a little tired room. Most annoying when drinking in this pub during our visit in mid November 2019 was the incessant, awful Christmas music that droned on and on on a loop play...and yes it was only mid November!!! The person behind the bar said that the music couldn’t be turned off or changed as he wasn’t allowed to. Ridiculous :( I would possibly stay again but not within 2 months of Christmas as I wouldn’t want to be subjected to that awful music when having a night cap before bed.

Visited on a Sunday evening, called and booked after discovering they allowed dogs, which was great. We arrived and were taken to our table. The barmen seemed inexperienced and nervous, but did their best and that’s all you can ask for. Found that 2 alcoholic drinks plus 2 soft drinks for around £14 was rather excessive but oh well. We ordered 4 starters and 4 mains. The dirty fries were amazing and a huge portion we didn’t wish to finish to leave room for mains. Others in the party had the wings and halloumi fries which were also very good.4 x Beef roast dinners were all of great portion size and quality. Could’ve done with a bit more colourful veg but aside from that it was fairly priced at around £10 and was worth that all day long.Overall a nice visit and some good food, thank you.

Just arrived back in Plymouth so went to the nearest place to eat. The barman poured me a pint then asked me to leave because me and his fiancee had an argument when we were in university. And the manager let him and no one would let me speak to the manager. Not a way to run a business.

I have been to this pub and number of times recently, mainly for drinking. They do have a good range of beers, ciders, wines and spirits. They have a menu throughout the week and roast dinner on Sunday's, I went in last Sunday and it was nearly full with people having Sunday lunch. Of course with me being on my own I was alright just eating on the bar. I had roast beef. The dumbwaiter wasn't working so the staff had to bring the food down and collect the dishes and bring them back up. Anyway the roast was ok, the meat and Yorkshire pudding was good, however the vegetables less so, the swede didn't have any flavour or seasoning, the potatoes were under cooked. Overall it was ok, not terrible but not great either. The reason why I didn't give it 3/5 stars is the fact that the person who seems like the boss, doesn't show appreciation to his staff that works there especially as the dumbwaiter was broken. Also when a customer said it seemed busy you could tell by the way he spoke and the body language that the amount of people that were in there was not enough even all the tables were taken!

Went in and ordered a chilli. My husband has been in there before, and said it was ok. The food took a while, however the barman dropped one of the plates on the floor. He immediately ordered a replacement to be sent up. I had a direct line of vision as he cleared up. The second plate he placed on the side. I was puzzled, but though there may have been a hotplate or something. 10 minutes later, the replacement chilli came up, and he brought over the meals. I told him it was cold when I tasted it. He told me that it had just come up from the kitchen. I told him it was cold because the plate had been left on the side, and I had seen what had happened. The cream had separated. The barman apologised and offered us a free drink. No offer of replacement meals, just a free drink. A further complaint resulted in a shrug of the shoulders and another apology. I went in there for a meal, not to leave hungry, having paid for the meal. I emailed the next day, but no answer from them. Service was terrible.

visited before and had been acceptable, this time I totally awful except for drinks. We went at 8pm ordered about 20 past waited 40 minutes for a plate of cold nachos with congealed cheese but so hungry we ate it. The first waiter had no clue who had ordered what, he wandered around trying to give out the wrong food, although the tables had numbers apparently didn't help him. Our nachos came out with next tables food and we had to ask the diners for our food as he had vanished by then.

Visited here for the first time on Sunday last week. Great that it allows dogs and has a good selection of Ale. Staff (in my opinion) need to smile!! I asked if there was anywhere that my dogs could not go and the answer I got back was "the kitchen". Very short and sweet. Lots of people hogging the bar so found it difficult to get a drink and people not happy to move out of the way. Cigarette ends all over the pavement outside the pub and dogs on the furniture. Drank up and left.

This was the first visit to this pub and no doubt will be my last. There is little parking available as it borders the Hoe. We were told that we were downstairs on table ten and that was as much information as we got. We finally became aware that we had to go back upstairs to obtain menus and having selecting our preference had to return and order and pay for the food and drinks. We ordered a Selection of meals from burgers to steaks. The meat was well cooked which is more than could be said for the chips which looked unappetizing as they were to eat. We ordered several potions of Pancakes which in the main were more than enough (5 pancakes) and I choose the Belgian Waffles which were stodgy and lacked any crispness.

Stayed on the way back from Spain with the 7 year old human child and the dog (second child). Straight off the ferry and a lovely welcome from all the bar staff as we walked in (dog immediately offered water and biscuits) and a good check in, personally showing us up to the rooms. Rooms are what you should expect, in a separate part next door for the room we were in. It’s an old pub and they’ve updated rooms to a standard you should expect for the budget rate they charge, with a cheerful nautical theme-clean and comfortable. We had a family room with a view over the park on the Hoe. We also had dinner in the pub and it’s good standard pub food, cooked well and tasty. The team are very obliging and attentive and there’s a nice atmosphere in the pub. Frankly you would pay over £100 more to stay next door in the Crowne Plaza (which I’ve always found to be a tiresome chain stuck in the 1990s decor wise with disillusioned staff-too stressed out by the endless conferences and package weddings they flog to care about individuals). For the price, location but mostly the team behind it I wish this place every success. One tip though - maybe some new carpets, curtains etc in hotel area hallways and bedrooms when you reach the profitable level to re-invest in fixtures and fittings, but no real complaints for around £50 a night!

After seeing the Poppy's we were all cold and desperate for a hot drink. Popped into to this pub hoping to get one and we did. They were just what we needed, absolutely perfect. Could've sat there all day, nice atmosphere.

What has happened to this pub ?At our first visit, early 2016, we were served with enthusiasm, energy and excitement. Last night we were met by a morose, miserable and mannerless barmaid, the ‘grump’. Her brusque, disinterested, responses set the tone for what was to be a short lived visit. The beer was on good form and strong. It needed to be to compensate for the monotone responses emanating from the other side of the bar. Food was duly ordered and we were led to believe that it was understood !Some time later three dishes out of five were unceremoniously plonked on the table. The ‘grump’ then worked out that she didn’t put through the full order. By that time, those of us with food, discovered that the steak, fish & chilli were colder than the average salad. Complaints followed and the ‘grump’ was asked to replace two of them with freshly cooked food. [My chilli was just about ok]. A couple of minutes later the same food was returned. The ‘grump’ was asked if the food had been replaced or warmed. “ I dunno” was what we got back. The steak looked and tasted like it had been dragged through a bonfire and the fish and been thrown back in the deep fat fryer. Both were inedible. No longer prepared to wait for the burgers we decided that we could stand no more. The ‘grump’ had no interest or concern why we were all standing at the bar.We waited and waited and after being ignored for several minutes, walked out. A long awaited family gathering and birthday celebration was ruined. So unless there is a volte-face by the people in this pub - avoid at all costs

Well cooked food, great service and nice location. Nice that it's not a chain and dishes home cooked. Good selection of beers too. Prices reasonable and fair for quality. Told Sunday lunch well worth booking so if our meal was an indication will definitely go for it next time in Plymouth.

I I called this place on Saturday evening and spoke to a very friendly young woman who advised that if I came in at 1:30 I would be able to get a seat without booking. This was sadly the only correct unpleasant part of the entire exchange. Coming into the bar it is very nicely designed and has a very pleasant atmosphere with a good range of beers all seemed well, the lady we spoke to was having a hard time understanding is that she tried really hard and was keen to help; we went and found a seat.Coming back to the bar we made the mistake of talking to the gentleman that is it turns out is the manager. I asked him where there is a menu please, abruptly said at the end of the bar in the pot marked menu in a sarcastic manner. Sometimes people are all stressed I didn't let it worry me I brush this off, then my friend asked to be order here or at the table what's the best thing to do the manager then said that we needed a table number which we didn't know we just said it's the one just round the corner at which she said that he couldn't see through walls and started becoming rude at this point we decided it really wasn't worth pursuing this any further and left, shame too, place looks good, the girls working there seem nice, just a shame they have employed a mis-manager!

Quirky pub all wood and on many levels (like a galleon?) Lots of choice of good beers, and the one evening meal that we had (Chilli con Carne) was very good. Friendly staff. The bed was very comfortable. The loo/shower room was very compact. Our 3 bikes were stored in the cellar. Although our room overlooked the street, we were not bothered by traffic noise. On the downside: Odd access to the rooms: outside and round the corner for access from the street, and downstairs and through the garden to get back into the bar.

This was the worst fish and chips we have had in a long time. The fish was so overcooked that even the dog wouldn't eat it. Some of the chips were over cooked and rock hard, some were under cooked and hard inside. It takes great skill to get a simple meal like this so wrong.

Formerly called Tasty Food Express it was renamed to Bretonside Kebab a few years ago when the owner noticed there wasn't a place calling itself a kebab shop in Bretonside. I've happily used it under both names.

Not sure but I think they’ve changed their name. Hot 20 mins ago a large code with chips. Code was fine but the chips were uneatable. So hard so so crunky

called here at the weekend as it advertised children's play area but sadly not open said they have got wasps . ordered food, hubby had belly pork with cider & cinnamon sauce & veg. Had to have chips with it as no mash available. Sweetcorn looked anaemic & was rubbery. cabbage was tasteless. Peas were overcooked. All looked like they had been reheated from yesterday. Belly Pork was tolerable but the sauce was like a jug of milk. Chips also looked & tasted as if they were reheated. I had a steak baguette - was not asked how I wanted steak cooked but that is irrelevant as it was mostly fat not steak. it was advertised as with peppercorn sauce but nothing. Spoke to the waitress who said she would relay our issues with the kitchen but nobody came back to us - ie management to apologize or anything NEVER AGAIN
