Kingfisher Fish & Chips in Plymouth

This was the worst fish and chips we have had in a long time. The fish was so overcooked that even the dog wouldn't eat it. Some of the chips were over cooked and rock hard, some were under cooked and hard inside. It takes great skill to get a simple meal like this so wrong.

Tried for 20 minutes to order food online by the time i managed to get into site delivery time had changed to friday lunchtime wich was not what my 80 year old mother wanted

Excellent Gluten free fish and chips. Pity it is only avaliable once a month.

Food expensive for very average, if not poor, fish and chips. No regular cod so pushed to buy more expensive medium size. Wait was long despite no queue,as staff dealing with delivery orders first. Attitude bad.

Said would be here between 18:20-18:45 and came at 19:20 and was warm not hot

£6.50 for a battered sausage and chips. The sausage was a cheap normal chippy sausage and I got the equivalent of a kids portion of chips. None of it tasted particularly good. Won't be returning. Will go to a decent chippy in future

The price is shocking for what you receive. A large fish and chips looked like a regular sized fish with a child sized portion of chips which was barely enough for a toddler. Advised Just Eat and they said there’s nothing they can do as each restaurant varies in recipe and portion sizes…

Great for a Friday night chippy tea!

Ordered a large portion of cod. I received a large portion! The cod was light and fresh, the batter was airy and delicious, and the chips were actually good and not oily at all. The fish could’ve used a bit more seasoning, but over all this was a good choice for some fish and chips!

Really disappointing food tonight. I know it's bank holiday but just waited for a portion of chips and they were awful....dried up and totally tasteless. Also wanted 20 minutes for them. Not good tonight 😕

Visited here whilst seeing a friend in the area. The fish and chips were excellent.

It's expensive, it takes a while, they ran out of fish at 6pm.

They cook to order but I think my fish needed some time on a rack for the oil to drain out. Chips were nice

This review is difficult for me to write, as the establishment normally provides excellent fish and chips. Regrettably, I experienced severe illness after consuming their fish and chips on this particular occasion.

Only went for some chips to go with some home cooked pizzas when we had family around. Ordered 2 large portions of chips. Not large at all, average quality and really expensive. I know that everything has become more expensive recently but if other chippies can at least give a decent portion for what they're charging, then so could these. Not going there again.

Aweful, overpriced rubbish!! Fish was paper thin & tasteless, batter was dry & thick. Chips tasted like yesterdays!!!

Awful. Batter was thin, greasy not at all crispy. Will not be using again. They have gone downhill in my estimation I’m afraid. Not worth the money at all.

Well Enjoyed , a superior product and excellent value for money .we drove over from Plymstock as the Plymstock chippy is the worse shop I’ve had the misfortune to get my fish n chips . 100 % better quality , portions , non greasy , excellent staff today Saturday 28th . Come and open over here In Plymstock please 🙏🙌

Have used Kingfisher for a number of years. Have noticed portion sizes continually getting smaller & smaller. I have just collected my order this evening and am utterly disgusted at the portion size. Prices go up but you get less of everything. Large cod is an absolute joke. Used to be the best before you won award. Need to take a step back and look at what actually got you that award! Will need to find an alternative. Jamie

Not had the food yet but am amazed at the totally unnecessary use of technology for what should be a simple dish and chip shop. First of all I placed my order with a very polite young lady and went to hand over cash only to find you have to deposit your cash in a machine. What the hell is that all about. Then giving a handheld device to tell me when my food will be ready. Seen this before in holiday hot spots but not a regular chippy. Get rid if the totally over the top waste of resources and lower the price. 😏

Pre booked for the second time and again sat waiting for 30 minutes. Unsure on the point of pre booking for a time then have to sit and wait.. staff friendly but in my experience of working in kitchens they’re unorganised and should probably start prepping before 12. Looked like there was a good 3-5 people in the same situation as me.

Not eaten here for over 7-8 years and used to love it and had recently and still as good after all this time

We order from here at least once a month and honestly have always really enjoyed our food . Fish and chips is no longer a cheap meal sadly , ever since the rise in gas and electric prices have soared. That combination along with the cost of fish have made this once cheap meal much more expensive. With that being said the food here has always been consistently good and the smash burgers absolutely amazing.

I was passing through and thought I'd give them ago, food was great, easy ordering, staff seemed nice and it was clean, BUT I paid £7 for large chips and a sausage, so expensive, and to make it worse the portion was tiny, I would say it was smaller than most chip shops regular. Bare in mind as well that they cook to order, so when I went in, there were two people waiting who'd already ordered, I placed my order and it took 15 minutes, which I think is ridiculous considering the vast number of staff. It is a shame, food was great, but price, portion size and long preparation time means I won't be visiting again.

Rubbish nearly £40 had 2 large chips a regular chips and 5 battered sausages to feed x5 plus 3x curry sauce. Really used to recommend this place but not anymore 2x chips barely went between 3 people priced gone up quality and portion gone down. Curry sauce was like water will not be using them again

This is the second time that I have had an order delivered over an hour later than expected when first placing said order. Will have to think very hard before ordering again.

Visited tonight and ordered fish and chips regular…I think it was £10.25 in total. Got home and on opening the box saw the smallest pice of fish I have ever had…..not impressed at all. The piece of fish was nowhere the size of the one shown in the picture. Suggest check the box before you leave the shop and make comment. Will not visit again.

Honestly I can’t believe I just paid £24 for a large fish & chips and a regular cod! The cod was small and their wasn’t alot of chips to warrant a large cod&chips. It tasted nice but Jesus it’s got expensive for less food

Will not be returning. The portion sizes are a joke, medium cod and chips for £10.50 and there was literally a thin layer of chips in the box - I could see the paper in the bottom there were that few. £28 - feel robbed! Will stick to the Plympton Fish Bar from now on - better value and great portion sizes. Complete rip off!

Absolutely awful. Prices are extortionate, staff are always unhelpful. In addition to the terrible, dry food you are apparently expected to collect the drinks you ordered (and have already paid for) on the way out from the fridge, which nobody tells you. When I got home and found that my drinks weren’t in the bag with my food even though I’d ordered 30 mins prior, I was told I would “have to come back and get them” if I wanted them. The worst fish & chip shop locally by a million miles. A lot must have changed since the awards they won in 2017 or whenever the banner they proudly display states. Shocking.

After having great fish and chips before I was very disappointed. Firstly they had no sausages, then they weren't serving burgers that day, despite the menu saying otherwise. Then we received and were charged for one portion of chips we did not order. Once we got the food it was mostly dry and overcooked. A 28 mile round trip and over £30 wasted. Will not bother to use them again.

Poor at best! Lived in Plympton for last 4 years and tried here for the first time. Fish and chips for us is usually a seaside/beach kind of thing… but we tried here and I wish I had not bothered. £28 for x2 regular fish and chips (small portion and fish around 6 inches long) cheesy chips (around 20 chips and a handful of cheese) curry sauce and mushy peas. We thought this might feed five of us but just suitable for 3! The cod batter was a smooth type over the fish and no fluffy crisp at all and was all soggy. The chips were nice and that’s the only reason this is not 1 star. I get cost of living crisis but why not at least ram the box full of chips to make up for the poor piece of fish. I won’t be returning and won’t recommend.

Ordering was very efficient and I was given an electronic bleeper that informs you when you food is ready for collection. This is very convenient as you can complete other things and know exactly when to collect your food. We had jumbo sausage and chips. The chips were (as i call it) old fashioned chips, quite soft, well cooked and really tasty, the sausage was large and a really nice texture and taste. I thoroughly enjoyed everything and would recommend trying this chippy, I will definitely be buying from there again.

Wow just had one of their chicken burgers and it was so good. We had a burger from a restaurant a few weeks ago which cost more than this and it was no way as good as this burger. The lady serving tonight was really lovely as well. Although I have never have a bad service from this place.

15 min wait for a sausage to be cooked after being missed from the order despite having 5 members of staff & 2 other customers

Wow wow wow! Blown away this evening. Have had food from Kingfisher twice in the past which was ok, but tonight we ordered for delivery on the app for the first time. We got a call shortly before the end of the delivery window to apologise and let us know they were very busy and our order would be at least 15 mins late. It was 25 mins late in the end, but well worth the wait (and at least they took the time to call!). I had hake, my husband had a burger and we shared a medium chips. The hake portion was generous and not greasy, and the chips were just right. Homemade tartare sauce was perfect. Blown away by my husband’s burger, not at all what you’d expect from a fish & chip shop, looked like a Brewdog or Five Guys burger! And by all accounts it tasted as good too! I also had the churros with chocolate sauce, wasn’t sure they’d be any good delivered, but they were excellent too. Definitely going to be ordering again soon. Thank you!

Massively over priced. Not good portions. Really disappointed. Only really popular because it's in a big housing area not for the quality. Would not recommend untill they reduce prices by 25%. Oh also forget there 5.2/6score it's hand picked rubbish. Google reviews are 3.8 and dropping. ( Response to the owner) I own a number of local businesses so don't leave bad reviews lightly. You are more expensive than ALL fish and chip shops within 20 miles, fact!. You don't hold any quality awards and your rent and rates are less than anywhere else in Plympton so stop with pathetic excuses and deal with your rip off prices for sub standard food. Stop profiteering from the cost of living issues and reduce your costs in line with reduced transportation, fuel and delivery costs. Why don't you respond again and I'll post a copy of your accounts!

Has this place changed hands? The menu seems to have changed and missing lots of things I've had in the past? The food doesn't seem to be as good? Nearly £3 for a large curry sauce? Expensive. Something has changed but maybe we've just had a couple of bad ones.

Best food from a chippy ever. Don’t use anyone else now even travel from estover to go there

I generally have the chunky chicken pieces with chips, and I love them. Food is cooked to order, so is always fresh and hot. This involves a bit of a wait but they give you a little machine which vibrates when ready. That means you can go and do your shopping or wait in your car until your order is ready. As for small portions other reviewers have complained about - that is not my experience. The chips are wonderful, a beautiful colour and a nice chunky size; probably the best anywhere. Not only that, service come with a beautiful smile - there are lovely people serving there.

Wrong order and very disappointing food. Chips are so pale and basically undercooked. Ordered 10 cod bites to share with my children and instead got 9 chicken balls(nuggets) which were so greasy. Unfortunately got home before realising.

Really frustrating that the vegan and vegetarian options are only available Wednesday- Friday. Wasn’t advertised anywhere so very disappointing.

Used to be good value but not anymore. Boxes appear to be smaller, large cod more like medium , thin at the ends just batter and chips more like medium, lot fewer chips .

Although very nice, extremely expensive. More of a monthly treat rather than the weekly treat.

As a truck driver and a northerner too I try chippys all around the country and I can honestly say this is one of the best chippy teas I've had in a long time, the food was cooked fresh to order, I had large cod and chips and even after a 15 minute walk to my truck it was still hot and the batter was still crispy along with the chips which had a nice bite to them, absolutely outstanding fish n chip shop

How disappointing 😔. Used to be excellent. I ordered large cod with normal chips. The fish was very thin and on the small side covered in really thick batter which tasted extremely fatty. Not had such a poor serving for a very long time. Will try somewhere new next time.

Pretty poor portion sizes as of late. Understand the economic situation at the moment but portion sizes have definitely shrank.
