My husband and I come here for lunch probably every 2 months or so and we always thoroughly enjoy it. I always have the chicken and bacon ciabatta with salad and it is superb. The salad is very tasty and the ciabatta is full of chicken and bacon and more salad. My husband often tries something different and today he had the steak pie with chips and vegetables which he said was excellent. We'll see you again in a few months. Keep up the good work!

The Priory is a beautiful place. In the heart of a picturesque village. It’s a building full of exquisite stone masonry and woodwork detail. I loved the restaurant. Great food - we were served a delicious liver dish, my husband had the steak pie and was very happy. Beautiful comfortable room. Will be back and have recommended to a work colleague who is on her way in the summer. Thank you for a lovely stay. Veronica.

I booked this accommodation in June of last year 2023 through booking.com. I booked a twin room for myself and my 80 Yr old mum. I live in spain amd would be flying across for my sons wedding. My mum lives in Middlesbrough and would be travelling from there with my brother in law and two nieces. Now ten months on from the original booking I knew I'd had a new bank card within the last year so to air on the side of caution I emailed the priory 3 days before travelling to explain my travel arrangements and expected time of arrival to be 6pm. I explained mum would probably arrive before me so she could pick up keys and get into our room. I asked was it OK for us to pay cash on arrival. As we were sharing the room and cost this would be the easiest way and if mum as there on my arrival I'd just give her half the room fee in cash. I was replied "yes no problem see you friday" After traveling from 8am I arrived at the priory at 6pm to be met by my mum who informed me my room had been cancelled. Confused I was like I have the email from two days ago agreeing the situation of us arriving separately. Let me go speak to reception. Reception and everything else within a t mile radius at least was closed. Even the local pub closed at 5pm. So not only could I not get a drink or snack there was nowhere to go. Mum explained the lady on reception had said the room was cancelled yesterday. When mum explained I'd contacted them then the person on reception seemed to twig on after looking at the computer, repeating my name of booking back to mum looking a little flustered she then appeared flummoxed trying to fix things. Mum said she thinks she realised she had made a mistake. My two nieces had booked into a double room and reception said this room had a locked door with adjoining room we could use. Well after walking upstairs to their room. Small and quite dark dingy looking room with just a side table. No wardrobe or drawers but a door up two more steps leading to an adequate bathroom with shower. On the other side of the bathroom is another door leading to what can only be described as a box room with a "day bed" in. Mum was told the said day bed had a pull out bed underneath. When I tried to pull out the day bed it touched the opposite wall so that meant we didn't even have a space to lay the suitcase down to open. I dragged the daybed around so the main bed was along the left and the pull out bed was at the end of the room. This meant we had at least 1.5sq metres of floor space and could get to the bathroom door without climbing over the other whilst sleeping. Nit ideal in the slightest but whilst moving the pull out bit into position I noticed there were hardly any wooden slats under the mattress to support it. Some broken strewn ones found under the bed which I pulled out and tried to build a bed of some kind. There wasn't enough so I checked under mums mattress for maybe one I could take off her base from the foot end to help support mine. Mum's full 6ft2" long bed had 7 slats on (fixing holes for 15. My bed at most I made with 5 slats. I got into bed carefully knowing this isn't sturdy. At 2.45am I turned over to a bang and it jade given way and collapsed. I couldn't. Ove anywhere as mum's sleeping within arms length and the weddings in 9 hours time. It's imperative she gets her sleep to deal ith the day ahead at 80yrs old. I sat up til she woke at 7. We went down for breakfast at 8 where I was seriously fuming inside but stayed silent just so tired and anxious for the day ahead. On leaving the dining room the lady who had been kn reception approached me outside to discuss the matter insisting the room had been cancelled. I explained we had spoken 3 days prior and she said yes I thought it odd when you'd emailed me the day before. I questioned why she hadn't thought to drop me an email. She said you cancelled. I did not cancel, booking.com cancelled unbeknown to me She asked could she find us another hotel but explained it would be a few mile away.no good as now it's 9.45am and the wedding at 12.30. I don't have time to repack, move and get ready for the wedding. I asked could she fix the bed situation whilst we were out as I'd not slept to whixh she agreed. I returned from the wedding at 6.45pm exhausted leaving the wedding party in full swing. The bed hadn't been repaired they'd simply brought another mattress in and put it on top of the other one that's on the floor. So I'm now laid on two matresses. The worst nights sleep and a distressing time for what should of been one of the happiest days of my life. Breakfast was superb but other than that its dated, in need of a refurb, new beds and the stair carpets filthy. I wouldn't stay again even if it was free.

Ideal location for coffee and cake before a cycle ride. Parking limited but access easy from the A6 and surrounding countryside. Friendly staff and a very small wood burning stove help a warm atmosphere. Coffee is good, I suspect a robusta/arabica blend, and the textured milk foam was just a little wet for a flat white. The cheesy crumpets are a revelation, try the extra bacon!

I was concerned and unhappy that we were alone at night in premises that we were not familiar with in case of an emergency during the night. The bathroom sink mirror is designed for giants. It was useless for a mere mortal like me.There was no bathroom sink plug meaning you have to wash with running water onlyThe flush for the toilet was brokenThe Proprietor doubled up as the Receptionist and Breakfast Chef and Breakfast Waitress. We were here today - 12 June 2021 and were totally unimpressed by everything! There was only room outside and the waitress pointed to ‘a table’ where we could sit and walked off to get us a menu. We were a little confused about which of the two empty tables she had pointed to and sat at one of them, which had not been cleaned. When she returned, we asked her to specify which table she had pointed to - she said, “Either”, so we moved to the other table which was still vacant. The waitress then moved some pots off this table and asked for our drinks order. I thought it was quite strange, as I am aware that tables are usually sprayed and wiped down after somebody has previously dined there - more so since this pandemic started and is continuing. This table was also dirty, with ice cream spilt on it. Not once did anybody come to clean this table!! The waitress had also dropped a fork on the floor by our table to which she said she would come back to collect. Another waitress, who had cleared (AND CLEANED) another table shortly after, walked by and dropped a knife on the floor - she said the same. None of them bothered to collect them! Our drinks arrived fairly quickly but we waited three quarters of an hour for our meals! In fact, even people arriving after us were being served their meals before us.I had ordered the steak burger with chips and salad (SALAD was stated on the menu) and my partner had ordered fish and chips. When our meals finally arrived, there was NO SALAD - just vegetables of leek, carrots and another veg. Who on earth would have vegetables with a steak burger?? I told the waitress it was SUPPOSED to come with salad - I didn’t want vegetables. It was then taken away and the veg replaced with salad (another delay)!! By the time it was returned, the chips had gone cold. The steak burger was tough and was not nice at all. Furthermore, the red wine which we had ordered tasted to me like it had gone slightly sour (either that or it was corked, which I would doubt these days, as more often than not, wines usually come in screw top bottles). My partner has never had an excellent sense of taste and he thought it was just okay.I also noticed a couple at another table who had ordered the same meals as us. The lady had also been given vegetables with her steak burger, she had complained and was brought some salad to the table. It was around 15 minutes later that the gentleman received his fish and chips. It wasn’t as if they were short staffed as there were plenty of staff serving at the tables. As the “dropped knife and fork” were STILL on the floor, my partner picked them up and put them on our table before we left. Anybody could have walked/tripped on them - there were several people using walking sticks, including myself! This was our first visit and most definitely our last!!!!!

What others have described as nice decor, I found bizarre and pretentious. I can’t speak for the restaurant but the cafe has very little atmosphere and no beer other than in expensive bottles. The rather odd outsized fixtures, a giant mirror, a large clock , an oversized planter and the tiled floor make this a rather uncomfortable space. People seemed to be enjoying the food but if all you want is a drink it’s not somewhere that I’d recommend.

We love it at The Priory. We stayed in the hotel which is absolutely fine with everything you need for a short break. The restaurant is outstanding with some of the best food and very generous portions. All ingredients are locally sourced too. Again I had the lasagne which is still the best I have ever had - even from an Italian restaurant. The Ploughman's salad was unbelievable on the following evening! Lovely fresh salad with fruit, 4 local cheeses, 2 big chunks of granary bread, coleslaw & chutney. My husband had the fish and chips on the first evening which consisted of a lovely large piece of fish, some chunky chips, mushy peas & tartare sauce. On the second evening he had the steak burger which again was very large with a bowl of accompanying salad and some french fries. Excellent value for money for all meals. Breakfast is included in the price of the room and is always perfectly cooked. There is also a good choice of cereals, fruit & yoghurt. The restaurant is quirky but so very relaxing with a really nice ambience. All the staff are wonderful! They all work so hard, very efficient but calm, warm & friendly. They make you feel welcome and nothing seems to be too much trouble. We look forward to returning again in a few months time

This was the worst 'hotel' we have stayed in. My wife and myself have just returned from an overnight stay at this hotel. The web site describes it as a luxuirious hotel serving exquisite food. It certainly is not and certainly did not. The pictures on their web site of the food do not represent what is actually on offer. We dined in the cafe bar as the restaurant was closed, although the same food is served in there. The food was very poor and the deserts were inedible. At 21.00 we were told that the cafe bar was closing and we would have to leave but we could use the guest lounge . The hotel at this time, was in complete darkness, no one on reception, totally locked up. I was given a dirty tray to carry our drinks on and shown this so called lounge. This was a dirty room full of disused old furniture with no curtains and smelled very damp. Today, when we asked for a copy of our bill, we found they had put an extra drink and a plate of food on our room, even though we were the only ones staying. We complained to the staff in the morning and were told that the 'guest lounge' was going to be closed and should not have been used, despite being told the night before that it was going to be refurbished. The hotel is in need of a complete refurb as it looks presently as though it is about to close. This was a Christmas present and we were both very dissappointed as the money could have been far better spent.

Stopped here for a coffee and a piece of rich fruit cake and a fruit scone jam and cream. Well, I make scones myself, and I have to say, it was easily the best scone I have ever had, it was soft, warm and moist - excellent! And the rich fruit cake was very good too. Highly recommend.

My husband and I eat here last Saturday after having a wonder into Scorton, we stopped for a drink as it was a lovely day and we decided to eat here as time neared tea time...My husband had the salmon and prawn salad which looked amazing and plentiful, I had the beef stroganoff which was reasonably priced on the menu to my surprise ! It wasn't very busy I have to say and the food did take a while to arrive.Instant food envy at my husbands salad! My beef was slow cooked, braised...which is lovely is you like that kind of thing...unfortunately I don't not only that the taste wasn't right...it was missing cream and flavour! It was in essence just a gravy, just a stew...I don't like stew, it's not what I ordered but I was hungry and I ate it. Disappointed greatly...

The food was outstanding, but the service was underwhelming and slow. Atmosphere was unusual but never the less a good pub. Very quite and they seem to have very odd opening times especially for evening meals.

We have visited the café /bar most weeks for the past few months for breakfast at weekend it has been excellent. We decided to visit for an evening meal.My husband had a starter which was OK we then waited 40 minutes for our main course. My husband choses seafood pasta with tomato//herb sauce prawns and fillet of cod. When it arrived it was dried up,no sauce,2 shrimps the fish was not cod, it was grey and stale. He could not eat it ,it was not even the standard of a cheap ready meal. While he didn't pay for it our evening was ruined and he had not had any food, Very very disappointing

After a 250 mile journey north, ending up in The Priory restaurant in this tiny village was a pleasant relief. The hotel manager was serving and some hearty food with accompanying drinks were quickly served.Service was polite, decorous but friendly, in fact very typical of the north. The atmosphere was homely with a roaring stove and subdued lighting - an altogether pleasant pit stop!Make sure you have at least one chip as the size is really something to behold and perfectly cooked, crisply on the outside, white and fluffy inside

I visited the Priory quite recently after going on a leisurely walk through Scorton with family. The restaurant welcomes all comers from cyclists and walkers to more formal guests. The food was absolutely amazing and presented perfectly in the newly 'done up' Priory which looks brilliant. The staff were excellent also. The only negative would be that there is no ambient music.

Arrived with family initially to eat at the Barn, but my powers of persuasion succeeded and we ate in the Priory.I enjoyed the char grilled chicken with skinny fries, don't mistake these for the train wreck they call "fries" at McDonald's, these are the real article. The black pepper sauce was absolutely delicious. I would highly recommend the Priory. Only one slight criticism it can be pricey, but you certainly get the quality of food you order. Definitely would go again if I'm in the north or back in England!

Decided to try the well known Nicky Nook walk that starts in Scorton, we went into Stouts bar that is part of the Priory for a very pleasant coffee before hand and after two hours of walking, went back for a couple of beers and lunch. We both thought the two specials we had were first class and I commented the mixed vedge of diced leeks, carrots and green beans had been cooked perfectly and really I have not had vedge as nice for many years. The staff are very helpful and friendly and the bill did not break the bank. We will be returning soon for another walk and a lunch.

We booked a table after being recommended to go by a few people over the past few months and were really glad we did. The food was excellent and the decor and surroundings were really nice. The wood burner is a lovely focal point and was exactly what we needed after a chilly walk! The steak pie was what I'd call a 'proper' pie. Homemade with plenty of steak chunks inside and a beautiful gravy and buttery pastry. My wife had the gammon which was not only huge, but really succulent and tasty. The fries and chunky chips were both excellent too. Unfortunately didn't have room for a dessert but we'll definately be back so will be trying one next time.

Arrived for lunch with reservation, running late but had phoned and was told that was fine . Sat at table for half hour and had eventually to ask for menus . Order was taken relatively quickly but after that all went downhill . Waited nearly an hour for starters then overheard member of staff telling someone to check that kitchen had started our order - starters eventually arrived about thirty mins later . These were fine and relatively tasty . Then waited another half hour for mains - well!!!! Salmon and cod were both overcooked and the slow cooked lamb was like eating shoe leather , steak pie however was apparently quite good . I did try to catch the eye of a staff member but was studiously ignored and no one came to check that all was okay . We decided not to order desserts in case it took another hour . There was definitely something strange going on as the staff seemed stressed and quiet . Given the food I wondered if the chef was not there and they were trying to cope - unsuccessfully . We were not the only unsatisfied customers , but when issues were mentioned to staff member all she could give was a standard apology with no offer of reduction in bill . I would not hurry back to this establishment . We were there with friends we were visiting who had heard good things about the restaurant and the poor service and food did spoil the enjoyment of the day .

This is a lovely venue, very pretty and the staff are really friendly. However there was a wedding being held in the function room when we arrived for a meal in the restaurant, and maybe because of this there were no staff anywhere to be found for about 5 minutes. When staff did turn up they were very helpful and we ordered our food. Then there was a wait of about half an hour before the food arrived, and bizarrely due to the wedding the food couldn't be brought directly from the kitchen as it would have had to come through the function room. Instead the staff had to take it out onto the road and through the car park, so it was lucky it wasn't raining. The food was very nice, and the portions were good (especially the fish), but some of it was a bit cold.So all in all a good experience, but when there's a wedding on it seems to have quite a big negative impact on the restaurant which is a shame and needs some better planning I would suggest.

Stopped off in Scorton to have an ice-cream and ended up having lunch in this small restaurant just across the street. The food is good but not special and the service could have been a little more friendly. The dining room however is lovely with a wood burner.

That afternoon tea we had was very nice, a good assortment of sandwiches, and nice scones and cakes. We were the only people sat inside the venue, a few outside, and this made the atmosphere a bit cold. Lovely decor, but lacked a little personal attention, we waited a good 10 minutes to pay, with no one around to take our money, with no one else in there, and no way to attract attention, we just had to wait until someone appeared.

Spent much more time sampling the Priory menu, whilst staying there for a weekend. The Sunday Dinner was one of the best I have had and the desserts are well worth a try if you have room. I will be sorry to go back to home cooking after eating here over the weekend.

I thought the food here was pretty good and I especially liked the village it was set in on a Summers evening. My warm potted shrimps starter was a bit experimental for me. No doubt traditional for the area these shrimps were tiny and there were not many of them, served with hot toasted bread.Main of chicken in pepper sauce was good enough, though the vegetables were completely soggy/overcooked to the point they gave the impression of being from a tin. Rest of it (including homemade chips and pepper sauce) was very good and the beer washing it down was (too!) nice.Service from staff was professional and the eating area was a pleasant place to be. Could not pick up any phone signal or wifi if that is your thing.

We normally come here for breakfast as a family a few times a year. We come back because it’s a lovely atmosphere, lovely food and lovely coffee. My additional needs child is normally adamant that he needs to get an apple from here (given the name he expects there to be lots of apples to buy and eat!)🍏 His eyes lit up and he was so happily surprised when an apple came beautifully presented to him by a waitress on a plate of its own! I was really taken aback by the thoughtfulness of the staff here and how they made it a special thing for him, thank you so much.

Just visited this lovely looking pub for a bite to eat on our way through travelling home. We were greeted by the bar staff & ordered drinks. We took a seat & viewed the food menu. We both decided on the healthy option noodles with chicken which showed 600 calorie meal. We also ordered garlic ciabatta. The food arrived & very disappointed with what we saw. 2 bowls of greasy noodles sitting in an oily liquid! The ciabatta was cold & soggy. Such a shame as expected a great pub meal Needless to say we both left most of meal & left still hungry What a waste of money. We were asked if meal was okay to which we politely informed the waitress that it wasn’t great. Think the kitchen needs to up its game on food preparation.
