After working up an apetite following a brisk winters walk we called in for Sunday lunch and glad we did. there is a large family restauraunt as well as a couple of bars with plenty to keep you entertained. The sunday carvery was exellent with beef ,pork, chicken breast and mince and dumplings which was a nice change though we did not sample.I had beef which was superb,my wife had pork and chicken which likewise was smashing ,especially the pork.Plenty of lovely veg and usual roast adornments nd fantastic value for money. The Prince seems to be a community family pub and the locals are lucky to have it, plenty of families with children in, all in all a proper local pub for the community, would not hesitate to visit again, just one small niggle , restaurant, was quite cold but thats being a bit pinnicky,it was a freezing day outside.!!

So we went to the prince of wales. Walked in. What a lovely venue we thought. Just the barmaid sat alone. No one else in the venue. Was ideal for us as a couple we wanted a quiet venue to watch a he football quarter finals. Obviously not that quiet but none the less we were an hour early (2pm) 4 more men walked in just before the football. Decided to order food at half time. Stayed how we wanted our steak cooked (rare and medium rare) Our food came after half time. WELL DONE. BOTH!!!! the strop the barmaid had was embarrassing. Stated the steaks were thin then they were the last two sirloins. Asked for a refund, again she stormed through the bar door causing what would be a scene if there were people in there and reluctantly gave us our refund with a face like thunder. When we asked why the venue was so quiet she said ‘it’s always like this’. Now to our understanding it’s because of the staff and sheer lack of professionalism. A perfectly presented venue, ruined by not taking the customers opinions on board. There is a reason why people do not come here. It’s not the prices of the drinks. It’s the quality of service!!!!!!!!!!

Booked a table for 16 people for last night, we were told we could choose from main menu or have the carvery but we had to go and order and pay at the bar, the carvery was all covered in foil and we were told it had been out since lunchtime so we decided to have something off main menu, it was absolutely disgusting service the meals came out so slow that we were eating on our own and waiting for someone else's meal to come, the food was not hot and the meals were all wrong my son found hair in his food, when we complained and told them our concerns the landlady was very rude and accused us of lying, the waitress even spilt tomato sauce on the table and left it with no intention of cleaning it up, if it had been busy we could of understood but there was only us and one other table of four people who also left there food saying it was disgusting, hence to say we will not be going there again as the drinks were also very expensive.

We booked for a family meal for Mother’s Day having heard good things. On arrival the you pay at the bar and they give you a ticket for both a cavery & desert. The carvery was nice but they were slow topping the sections up once they run out.I didn’t get few things due to this and had to wait for a boat of gravy as that had also run out. However the food was very nice and I enjoyed it.Then I queued for the desert, this was the annoying part.I waited near enough 20 mins to get served with one person ahead of me in the queue. They only asked for ice cream but it seemed to take forever for them to dish it and they kept disappearing through the serving door and taking ages to come back.In the end I gave up and sat back down. It was a pity as the deserts looked lovely.I’m willing to give the place another go, it’s got new owners and the food was nice. For the sake of a few teething problems which I’m sure they will get right I will pop back soon.

Woman behind bar (possibly the manager) very rude, moaning about people walking in for carvery and not booking in advance. My other half over heard her saying she wished she had just stayed in bed. Veg was very limited and was very hard (some people like it like that I suppose) had to wait over 5 minutes for them to bring more gravy out (obviously not many people like gravy on their roast dinner) and it was the most watered down gravy I have ever seen. It looked as though they took a tiny bit of gravy left in the bottom of the old container and just added loads of boiling water to it. A very slow moving queue whist getting food as people seemed to be waiting for them to bring more veg out and only permitted to have a maximum of 3 roast potatoes. Every cloud has a silver lining though as the young lad cutting the meat seemed nice. I will never ever go here again and will advise people to do the same.

My partner & I had some food at the prince, unfortunately it was awful. We waited 45 minutes to be served (some other customers seemed to have their food served before us even though they arrived after us) "luxury fish pie"which was far from it. Cold carrots and cold cauliflower was served with fish pie which I could best describe as Tesco value range. My partner had ham egg and chips. she had asked for an extra egg which never arrived. the egg that did come was cold, the chips were few and terrible.WHY OH WHY carry on service when customers apart from us where dissatisfied. It would have been better to offer a refund and admit defeat. The manager did her best to make it right but the kitchen let her down so badly it was irredeemable.Have had much better food so will return regardless, hoping that the food is a lot better next time.

Food (carvery) was well presented and cooked , service was very good and duty manager(Emma?) tried to ensure we enjoyed the experience. All was good apart from cold plates which marred the meal as food went cold quite quickly. Management should install hot plate machine to complete the transformation of a decent meal in good surroundings with good staff ( vast improvement - well done). We visited this restaurant on a Sunday about 5pm with 2 young children. The carvery was still available but looked a bit dried out, but in fairness it was finishing at 5pm so we decided to order from the regular menu. The kids had sausage and chips which was excellent and pizza and chips, the pizza i failed to cut with a steak knife...The adults both ordered a mixed grill, we did not fancy having a chicken breast with it though and the chef told us we could have a whole steak, instead of half instead. We were more than happy with this so we went to the bar to pay. The women behind the bar, who we assumed must be management, told us the chef had no right to tell us that and the difference would be taken from his wages!Could not believe how unprofessional this sounded plus you would never tell the public about taking money off somebody's wages! We thought the chef superb as he knew we didn't want the carvery and was basically encouraging us to eat in the restaurant which at the time, in fact the whole time we were there, was totally empty! Was a fantastic mixed grill and we thanked the chef who was helpful, polite and a great cook, however the same cannot be said for the female management!

We went at about 12.30pm on a Sunday. They do a carvery but we fancied something off the regular menu. We placed our order at the bar and it wasn't exactly busy probably about 10 other tables seated by the carvery we chose to sit by the bar as it was much much quieter. 40 minutes passed and we still hadn't received our food. So I went to the bar to enquire she told me the chef was very busy and he was also doing the carvery, but it's shouldn't be too long. It then turned up on our table the guy did say sorry for the weight. The food was school canteen at best. The buyer had been thrown together with no care and the gammon was very dark, tough and mostly fat. For £25 it was never worth the time or the money, didn't even eat it all. We won't be back!

I have been visiting the area for quite a while and always ate at The Prince of Wales as it was a Number Works Pub and such good value and decent food. Imagine my disappointment when my husband and I went here after arriving from the South Coast Friday only to find it is just an ordinary pub now with an ordinary menu and vastly inflated prices. The staff are very vague too. We went back Sunday to try the roast. Although the menu states the carvery is open on Sundays up until 9pm, we were told it was finished. The time was 5.30pm. No apologies or explanations were offered. I will admit the food was fine but no better than when the prices were £2 £4 £6 £8 . The car park was empty which was very unusual previously, it was this that first alerted us that something had changed. We last came here in October 2015. We used to praise and recommend this restaurant to all when it was a Number Works Pub. There is nothing outstanding about it now. What a shame.

My husband took me out for lunch on valentines day - his first time eating at the Prince of Wales. We had the best carvery i have ever had and my husband has been recommending it every since. A choice of 3 meats and an array of veggies. The chefs are so friendly and we have always found the bar and waiting staff helpful and knowledgeable. So good i am booked for tomorrow with friends!

We went to Ross on Wye for the day and found the Prince of Wales pub where we decided to have lunch, they were serving a carvery which we had and enjoyed very much. The service was excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful. All in all a very enjoyable lunchtime, we will certainly be going back again.

Came a few weeks back, for a meal with my mum before I headed off for work, and for the price, the service was what you'd expect. Cheap and affordable good quality food, that tasted amazing. Waiter(grace I think was her name) was amazing, so polite and friendly! She offered us our food, and said she hoped we enjoyed it. HOWEVER bar service was slow, and we were waiting for five minutes before we got served with no one present!!All positive for a quick cheap meal, would definitely recommend.

I have to say this is the worst place I have visited in, the staff are so poorly trained and unhelpful, the girl I think called Gemma did not know what they sold and then said we were asking the wrong person about drinks, I think as a waitress that is your job, we then got the drinks plonked on the table on the tray and not given to us and she walked off.We then started to look at the menu and then was given a list of 8 things including no cream for desserts we could not have but what made us laugh was she could not even be bothered to tell us she just wrote it out on a piece of paper and walked off.In the end we decided to leave as they did not have 3 portions of fish and chips, my wife went to the bar to pay and they did apologise but said it is a Sunday, I could understand if we had not booked but we had so they should have made sure there was things available.I would definitely NOT recommend this place to anyone and the new owners need to sort it out.

Carvery on Sunday advertised as all day but turned up to pub at 2pm where lots of spaces, ordered drinks then tried to order carvery as per sign on wall. Told we couldn't have it as not booked. Couple next to us eating & it looked good to be fair but useless if not available

at The Prince of Wales they do a lovely carvery on a Sunday and Wednesday not sure about the quality of meals on other days but it seems to have a good name, the only drawback is they don't open the doors on a Sunday till 12 noon and sometimes a few minuets after midday so customers have to queue outside in the cold or rain if its not a nice day,

When asked for menu was told most things on there wasn't available chef suggested steak meal. When it came out was things stated on when missing and was terrible more fat than meat and then rest cheap frozen crap so bad couldn't eat had to leave and ask for money back and get takeaway as wasn't cheap either. Never again.

Disappointed always had a good meal at good value as the numbers pub. Now it is no longer the numbers pub we found the menu limited and expensive, it had no choice of sauces for steaks etc and was very limited on the children's menu with only rubbish food on offer and nothing of any substance. We had to resort to buying the kids sausage egg and chips off the adult menu as it was cheaper which resulted in savers type sausages. All the chips tasted like they had been cooked in dirty oil. When we got the food it was even worse seeing as what we paid for it, the hunters chicken is the right name, you had to hunt for the sauce and cheese all it had on it was a piece of bacon. The steak and Ale pie was just as bad a slither of pie which was dried up with very little meat in it. We all came away hungry and a lot lighter on the pocket. There was no cash machine for a cash only pub, no drinks for children and despite the menu stating a display of deserts nothing on show. The meal came to £48 with one alcoholic drink, I wouldn't have paid £20 for it.We used to find trouble getting seating any time of the day Fri or Sat, we thought as we had turned up at 6:30 we would have problems, but the place was deserted, when we left there was only two people left in there. We will not be back!!!!!!!!I would give the place six months to survive unless something drastic happens.

Awful experience, went for a quick lunch with my boyfriend and received the worst service, we was stood at the bar for about 10 minutes as there was no one there, I didn't see one waitress so anyone could have robbed the place. We ordered our food and waited quite a while for it, I ordered a bacon, Brie and cranberry sandwich and when it came it had no bacon and very little Brie so was basically a cranberry sandwich?! The woman apologised and got the chef to do a new one, 15 mins later after my boyfriend finished his meal he brought me a new one out even though the place was dead, and by that point I was so fed up I didn't even want it. Very poor customer service. Would not recommend.

What can I say on the beef & roast potatoes were lovely, however that's where the good points end. I felt the vegetables could have been hotter but the rest of the group were happy with them. There were no Yorkshire Puddings available when they did arrive they were not crisp or fluffy but greasy, flat & more like a pancake. This was not the worst of it. The young chef picked the Yorkshire ' s out of the tin with his hands & threw them in a dish which he duly brought to our table, after we had eaten our dinner. When my aunt challenged him on using his fingers to pick them up, he denied it. She told him she had watched him do it he responded by saying that his hands were clean. Once again she said that food standards would disagree with that point he walked away. The place was not that busy & not once did anyone ask if we were happy with our meal. It took 30 minutes before our table was cleared, we were not offered dessert or coffees.I would not recommend this place which is a shame because we used to meet at their partner establishment The Man of Ross where the service & food was always first class, unfortunately they no longer do food & recommended Prince of Wales.I sincerely hope they sort their staff & service out.

Today we attended the resturant we had reserved a table and we walked in ordered drinks then went to find out table, when we got there there was no menus etc.. we went on to collect some menus from the bar they only have us 2 for 6 people. We went and requested more. We then sat and waited realising we were not getting our orders taken we went to the bar again they said they had mucked up our bill so said they'll come take our meal order which was very unprofessionaly! service was shocking all in all exepted at least the basic service would not recommend to anyone im afraid and will not be returning.

Under new management, my friend and I reserved a table for 2 adults and 4 children for a wednesday. When we arrived, the exact table we had asked for had a reserved sign on it and a highchair ready as we had asked for one. We went and paid ( £6 for adults and £4 for kids!) and couldnt believe the choice. A choice of 3 meats, stuffings, yorkshire puds and a huge range of vegetables including one of the best cauliflower cheeses i have tryed. All of the children really enjoyed it and ate all of their lunch! When our plates were collected, we were told ice cream was included!! The rest of the menu looked really lovely and the whole place looked clean and shiny compared to our last visit 2 months ago. We were told it had been taken over on the 14 November and the new menu started on 23 November. The staff were really friendly and chatty to the children as well making us feel very welcome. Looking forward to trying the buffet breakfast next!!

I only went there once before and to be honest it was dire under the 2468 umbrella. Half an hour wait for a coffee while i had nearly finished my food and no cards taken. However since the newly appointed owners have taken over and a very successful leadership team I am impressed. Firstly the carvery meal was amazing and good value for money but also I can pay with my card. Welcome to the 21st century. Would highly recommend this place and nothing was too much trouble. Well done to the new team in place and look forward to my next visit.

This place has a certain charm although it's a shame the charm does not extend to the miserable staff and the moaning management! If they put that negative energy into customer service and smiles it would be a step in the right direction! Ordered food then was told after we'd eaten the main course that the desserts we ordered around 45minutes previously wasn't even in stock, in fact there was only 1 type of dessert available but our money had already been taken! Demanded refund and was reimbursed accordingly although no apologies for the error! Such a shame as the place has so much potential to be better than it is but cannot even keep its staff!

We use this restaurant when visiting our daughter, who lives in Ross. It's always been a pleasurable experience before but the changes that have been made do not do it any justice. Puddings used to be displayed in a fridge for all to see and now they're just the normal on the menu and it takes away from the feeling of the area. Sadly it's not a place I'd be excited about returning to. That special friendly feel it had seems to have disappeared with the changes they've made.

It may well be relatively inexpensive at the Prince but I would still expect a level of service and quality above that of a victorian workhouse. Where do I begin this tale of gastronomic torture? After two previous disappointments ( cold meals, burnt to charcoal offering) I tried again. After waiting 45minutes on a not busy Sunday evening I saw a peri peri chicken delivered to the wrong table ,it sat there a while then went away back to the so called kitchen. Sometime later it reappeared with a lovely wipe mark in the sauce along with this came the sizzler sizzling away. The peri peri was of course stone cold along with the rest of the meal. The other bits of the sizzler meal never arrived. At this point I gave up finally found a boy complained had my money back ate nothing and left. In summary this place is an insult to the food industry and I would advise anyone to forage the bins of Broad Street for a better meal and overall experience.

If you are on a tight budget for eating out then this is the place to go!A family of four can easily eat out for around £30 including desserts but my personal favourite - a mixed grill for £6 - you just can't go wrong and for an extra £2 it's well worth going for the mega mixed grill.A word of advice though - book a table well in advance for a Friday or Saturday evening as the popularity of this place means that you will be turned away if you haven't booked - lunchtimes you may get away without booking (oh and make sure you carry cash as they don't accept card payments which is a bit of a shame but I guess that's what keeps the overheads down)

Home of the £2, £4, £ 6 and £ 8 Menu. Food is divided into one of thes price bands, and you pay just that for the meal. My family (wife & 3 Children) hada something off the £ 2.00 menu, and found the quantity and quality to be top notch. The whole family fed for £10.00 !! We enjoyed the value so much

We stayed here overnight and booked the restaurant for our evening meal. Lovely staff, in a lovely surrounding. It’s a shame it was dark so we couldn’t see the views. Nice selection of starters, mains and desserts and we managed to enjoy all three. In the morning, the breakfast menu was plentiful and the sausage and bacon from a local butcher were very tasty.

England's Gate is a traditional British Pub and should be proud that it lives up such expectations. The food and the service was excellent. My wife had a steak which was very good. I had the steak and ale pie which was exceptional (especially for those who wish to have some comfort food occasionally . Pity more is not made of the 'pie of the day' as it was obviously hand crafted and had a very generous filling of tender and tasty steak. I was a little unsure of what I would get when ordering as the description and lead me to believe it might be 'brought in'. Top marks when it arrived and looked and tasted great. This (and perhaps other great items on the menu) should be heralded as a special dish (as it clearly was) . Overall, we wouldn't hesitate to go back and sample the food and atmosphere again. Super place, well above average food.
