We visited Edinburgh June 6-10, 2018 and tried to find this little restaurant. No dice. There is a bunch of construction going on along this street and we could not find this place at all. We were looking foward to trying it for a light dinner, but we were disappointed. No idea when it might be open again.

While the service can be a little slow, the food is totally worth the wait. The hamburger is particularly good and the artisanal beers are exceptional. I would totally go back.

A return visit knowing the beer and food is great. Recently purchased by The St. Andrew's Brewing Co with name change too. A minor issue with food was rapidly resolved with no fewer than three staff ensuring our requirements were fulfilled. Customer service was second to none. The brewery's beers and the guest beers were plentiful, well kept, and very well chosen. Well worth visiting for drinks and food.

My boyfriend and I went here looking for a place with a great selection of craft beer on tap and we were not disappointed. We tried several different wonderful beers and then had the venison main for dinner. Delicious and tender! And their garlic fries are the best fries I’ve had in Edinburgh! Highly recommended!

First time in the Potting Shed since new owners took over and things have changed for the worse. Initially everything was fine - ordered drinks and soup for 4 people and it arrived quite quickly. Soup was very nice. The problems started later in the evening. First they overcharged us by more than £8 for the soup. Waitress explained it was to do with new prices but did refund the money, which was fine. However, the bar man who took our orders later was very abrupt and impolite. He didn’t know what drinks they served and was quite rude as a result. He seemed annoyed when we tried to pay for drinks together rather than separately and miscalculated the price. He got very annoyed when this error was pointed out and implied it was our fault! To top it all off they called last orders a full hour before closing time and rushed us out of the door almost 30 minutes earlier than their listed closing time so we didn’t even get to finish our drinks. The drinks and food were fine but I think management needs to look into the attitude of some of the staff.

We went to the Potting Shed for a family dinner ( with a toddler) while visiting Edinburgh. There was nothing that we didn't like. The atmosphere is great. The food is great. The staff is great. They were so helpful and friendly with our 2 year old. They played great music. Would recommend and would definitely go back if ever back in Edinburgh.

I was in Edinburgh for a work conference and had dropped into the Potting Shed for a quick bite because it had shown up on a list of places that served "gluten free" food. Admittedly, while traveling, my expectations for GF eats is exceptionally low but I have coeliac so there's not much I can do about that! At this point I was hoping for a decent salad and to be on my way. What I got instead was 5 star dining that was out of this world flavorful and so memorable that I'm back months later writing the review. I had the honey glazed duck breast and a seasonal carrot and coriander soup, both of which had me embarrassingly scraping the plate. The soup was rich, and hearty and unlike anything I've ever had off a gluten free menu anywhere else. There were also gluten free rolls?? That were so good I was a little skeptical they weren't actually gluten free (they were, they were just VERY GOOD). Skip over to the main course - The duck is cooked absolutely perfectly, the sides are all in perfect compliment to the protein, and then... then there's this lovely piping hot sauce to drizzle all over everything that's almost like a gravy but I can actually eat it. I was in heaven. I spoke to the chef afterwards thanking him for actually feeding me a REAL gluten free dinner, something that wasn't just lettuce on a plate and with some bland chicken strips but a real, honest to god delicious meal. Nothing was missing, nothing was substituted or weirdly modified to accommodate my coeliac it was perfect. It was absolutely astounding and probably the best meal I had my entire time in Scotland. I highly recommend you stop in, especially if you have coeliac and are absolutely fed up with having to make do with some chips and a bunless burger. Potting Shed is where it's at and will be my FIRST STOP when I'm back in Edinburgh next time. Bless you lot - and give the chef my regards again. I still dream of that entree.

I will preface my comments by stating that two out of the three are fussy eaters, we were going to the festival theatre which makes the location excellent, en route from parking car. But to the service good but not attentive, I appreciate some space but we had to go searching for staff to order desserts, the staff where very pleasant when in attendance. Two of the three had the daily special chilli burger and both thought it was excellent spicy but not too much, the burger was cooked to perfection, the coleslaw was tasty and the skins on french fries were crisp and delicious. The daily fish dish , haddock was a dissapointment, firstly it wasn't fresh and the batter tasted like it was over salted, most of it was left, tartar sauce and peas and onions were good. We commented on paying the bill. Finally the desserts, we had the carrot cake and the Apple tart tatin, the carrot cake was the one to recommend enjoyed every mouthful, the Apple tart lacked, firstly it was served upside down, the pastry was bland I felt it was bought in and there were very few apples the ice cream was amazing though. The kicker was the price £6.50 for a smallish portion seemed excessive. So would I go again, yes I probably would its cutesy decor, it's location and most of what we ate was good but as I stated no consistency, could do better, if they matched fresh ingredients to price.

We were really disappointed with the service and menu. As a group we have been to the restaurant a few times. One of our friends is vegan and she's always loved the menu and food. The menu was different and when we asked for vegan options it took a while for the server to come back to us. When he did he listed some items that were not on the menu. Our friend ended up with soup. The soup itself was lovely but it was a real shame not to see more exciting items on the menu that we'd previously had. We were the only customers in the restaurant and the service was exceptionally slow. Staff seem uninterested in providing a good experience.

We booked in here at the weekend, nice looking place was very busy. Three cocktails ordered all were good, we ordered the Roe Deer for 3 of us and 1 had a Chilli Burger - which was Burger of the day. The Burger was good and no bother with portion size, however the Roe deer was fantastic, well cooked with a nice mix of stuff on the plate - but serving size was at a best a large starter. I wouldnt have minded so much but we did ask when placing our order if we need to order some side dishes but were told no its a full meal - maybe for an elf. It was such a shame as it was lovely but just lacking in a bit of quantity. I should give it 4 stars but I just cant - we ended up going to the Xmas market afterwards to get a bratwurst.

I met a big group of people here for a pre conference meal. Nice decor with lots of wood, corrugated iron ceiling and garden tools. Friendly staff and a warm atmosphere. The food was inventive and original and tasty. However it seemed to be missing some of the really deep intense flavours I expected from such a restaurant. The squash parfait was nice but the sides were not impressive. I didn't enjoy the taste of the small fruit (yellow cherry like?) with this dish. The roe deer was very nice and extremely tender. I would have liked it to have been a bit more charred or earthy in taste. I loved the chocolate, orange and whisky. Lots of nice beers to choose from.

Choice of beers was great, and I had a lovely Pinot noir which was very good. Staff were lovely, really friendly. Would highly recommend.

I went to the Potting Shed, on Sunday, for lunch with my mother and father. I must confess that I was very underwhelmed. My father and I order the lamb and pasta dish at £18 - fairly expensive. However, where on earth was my lamb??? It was literally three bites of lamb on a plate. Seeing as it was a pasta dish, the "mark up" must have been considerable. After we ate our lunch dishes, we ordered some dessert. One of my family ordered the strawberry parfait with vanilla sponge, strawberry jam and brandy snap. However, this time there was no vanilla sponge or brandy snap. It was only when I pointed this out to the waiter, and they checked with the kitchen, were we told that there was no sponge left! We were not told this before we ordered or indeed when the food was served. It was only when this was made clear, were they prepared to offer a slight discount. Having worked in a restaurant myself for several years, I know this is not how to treat the general public - especially when reputation is everything.

There were 6 of us who were visiting the Fringe Festival and had booked The Potting Shed especially. It was Tuesday 8th August and our booking was at 7.30pm. It started off positively, one of the young waiters was very fun and got us seated in a booth. We ordered our drinks and food relatively quickly which was great. It was busy and that was to be expected with it being the Fringe. Our starters came out quickly, the Scotch Egg was phenomenal, as was the Haggis and Neaps. The prawn cocktail was lovely except that my friend found a piece of polystyrene in her food. Our waiter had now changed to a waitress, she was very apologetic and gave us that meal for free which was fine. We're still not sure how the polystyrene got there but it might suggest how the food is stored.Mains took longer to come as the place got busier. Again we could see the kitchen was working hard so it wasn't an issue because we had left ourselves more than enough time to get to our next show. For mains, we ordered the fish, lamb, burgers and salmon. The fish was astounding, the burgers were ok from what we were told and the salmon was cooked well. The lamb was such a disappointment for the price. It was bland, there was a lot of pasta with about 3 sundried tomatoes in and hardly any lamb. We were paying the most and had the least. I wished I'd gone for the fish.Trying to get drinks or any waitress service once the mains were over was near on impossible. We were all having a laugh and one of us did get a bit loud admittedly but in a harmless way. The waitress made it quite plain that she was not impressed so I apologised and just explained that we were visiting and she was just doing a silly impression. The waitress' response was, 'I'd rather she didn't, there are other people in the restaurant.' Then she walked off and went over to someone I assume is her manager. First of all, this really is a pub not a restaurant, secondly we were bored waiting for service and finally her attitude was just unnecessary. I made excuses for the fact she was probably tired but if you're going to work the Fringe Festival then you need to be prepared for the fact that you are going to have visitors who are quite excited and happy. I had to basically beg for a dessert which took so long to come that we nearly left, however we couldn't leave because it took so long to get the bill. Considering we felt like we were no longer wanted in the place, I find it surprising that they didn't give us the bill quicker. Friends joined us later so there were 8 of us and I just felt for them because it was embarrassing, the tension that had been created. The dessert was ok but was like a bitter pill to swallow after the waitress ruined the meal.It was a friend's birthday and at the start the first gentleman (waiter) had said he would look into doing something for him but that never happened and by that point we'd had enough. In the end, the person whose birthday it was, stood up and went to pay. He left a £10 tip but mainly to be polite, she couldn't even say thank you.I am giving it a 3 because the food, on the whole, wasn't bad at all but staff need to be trained in how to deal with customers. Petulant staff members are not what I want to experience when I'm a paying customer.

A slight oversight on our part as we didn't book and it was 15mins before they stopped serving food at 22:00.The front of house staff found us a table near the window for the four of us and someone came by shortly after to take our orders. This place gave me what I craved: great Scottish classics but with a farm-to-table twist. I visited another restaurant doing farm-to-table, La Petite Mort, on my visit to Scotland. The Potting Shed focuses on the farm aspect of the equation. It reminds me of cooking with my grandma on her farm in Ohio. The beans, corn, and peas you collect from the farm are so delicious that overmanipulation of the ingredients feels wrong when you're cooking a simple meal for your family after a long day of work. The flavors of the vegetables were so bright that they needed nothing more than the Scottish butter and sea salt they were dressed with to make them special. This came with a beef and haggis stew that was perfectly sized. The flavor of the stew was deep, balancing out the bright vegetables. It was a simple dish but it worked. If the vegetables were boring, I probably would be writing a two star review.Cocktails: smart and delicious. I'll visit again next time I'm in town.

We're not in a hurry, which was good as everything took a while. Our waiter seemed on a different planet. My burger was average at best and had a weird taste. The waiter said he would tell the chef and that was it. As I had not eaten much the person who cleared our table did ask about it and took it off the bill. The rest of the food was ok but it's not somewhere I would hurry back to.

More a case of stand as the bar area is quite small but has an interesting variety of beers and wines. We were soon seated and our food order taken. The fish and chips were very good although I thought the skinned and battered haddock a little on the small size. Overall a good experience especially given how busy they were.

Pre-booked a table for 2 the first Saturday night of the festival. We were taken on time and guided to the very back of the restaurant onto a table with no seats initially but quickly rectified by taking two chairs from the next table. Seats were placed facing the back wall which we moved so that we could at least see some other people. We were served very quickly but had to ask for our water on numerous occasions. I heard customers from another table who had nearly finished their meal politely asking for their water which they had asked for 3 times. The waitress told her everyone is waiting for water - can't you see we are busy? Funny they were able to bring the alcohol out quickly enough! Our meal was flung at us and we felt very rushed. We asked for the sweet menu only to be corrected by the server telling us it was a dessert menu (oops!). We decided not to bother as it was very expensive and we were feeling like we really shouldn't have been there. When we asked for the bill our waitress was almost annoyed that we now weren't going to have a sweet/dessert. Lesson learned - do not go to the Potting Shed if all you are drinking is water but do go if you want in and out of the a Restaurant in 25 minutes. Not a good experience in this extremely warm place - oh and the chicken and bean dish was grossly over priced for what was served up. One final point - the ladies toilets were absolutely filthy :(

For the last 4 years we had attended the Edinburgh Festival and made the Potting Shed our go to end of day dinner place. We were very disappointed this year after booking a table for 8.30..we were told that they were just waiting for tables to leave and we would be seated within 15 mins...we were happy to wait and ordered a drink while we waited for a table to become free. The guy who was on the booking desk advised us he would come find us asap, we were sitting no more that 5 feet from him at all times during the next hour wait..he had completely forgot about us....I spoke to a waitress at the bar and was told she would get him as he disappeared from the front desk for ages...he never returned. We left...very disappointed in the customer service..the manager the potting shed needs to employe a secret dinner service and see whats happening .I've always recommended the Potting Shed as a great foody place to visit when in Edinburgh...but now will never recommend again...!As a foot not..what resturant runs out of water..yes!..no water at 8.30pm.

We had been to the Potting Shed before and the food and service was good. But, on this relatively quiet Sunday night we didn't get our drinks until half way through our main course, the vege burgers were dry and the sticky toffee pudding lacked any sauce. We balked at the compulsory service charge and paid half of the amount. What we didn't get was any apology. There are better places to eat in Edinburgh, and just because it's the Festival, we don't need to put up with lousy food and service. Go elsewhere.

My wife booked this place for lunch when we (us and our two girls 5 & 9) popped through to see a couple of shows at the Fringe. The decor is rustic bordering on industrial...if that makes any sense...but it is a welcoming kind of environment. The menu is understated but it contains some cracking dishes. I had the chicken supreme with 5 bean & chorizo cassolet, it was lovely although in hindsight I should have ordered a side of carbs to go with it. My wife only had the soup of the day (vegetable broth) which was flavour packed and pleasingly had enough pearl barley to satisfy the hungriest patron. I had one of the 3 craft lagers that are available on a list of 17 craft beers (porters, ales, ipas)Kid #1 had Mac & cheese which was lovely, although the garlic bread accompaniment was pretty much inedible unless you had teeth like a healthy canine. Child #2 had the chicken goujons. Proper large strips of chicken breast covered in a lovely crisp homemade batter. All in all a very good lunch. A mark taken off for the inedible bread and slightly less than efficient, albeit pleasant, service. We'd definitely go back again.

On a rainy day in Edinburgh we were trying to find a dog and child friendly pub in Edinburgh and came across this place. We were so glad we did. The atmosphere was lovely, the guy who served us (Jamie) was very friendly and very helpful and the food was absolutely amazing. I had fish and chips and my husband had the beast burger (and it certainly was a beast of a burger) and they were both amazing. The peas I had with my fish were amazing and sweet and it was so lovely to have them arrive in a mini saucepan. Our little boy just had chips which he loved and he felt so comfortable in there (it wasn't busy at the time) that he felt confident to go to the bar on his own and ask for some more ketchup (he is 4 years old) and Jamie was so lovely with him asking for more ketchup I couldn't ask for more. I love the fact you automatically get water (with cucumber in it too which was so refreshing) and the Edinburgh Raspberry gin they had there was fantastic. Our dog felt comfortable there and all we can say is that this is definitely a place to visit. Jamie who was serving there was very friendly, welcoming and accommodating and the food was amazing. Best food I have had in a pub or any eating establishment for a very long time and great place if you like us have to find somewhere inside to accommodate a child and a dog.

I visited The Potting Shed twice over the previous week. First time was a Saturday when I visited with my partner initially with the intention of having lunch (about 3pm) but we were told on arrival that the kitchen was closed which now seems odd but we went elsewhere to eat and then returned for cocktails as we wanted to take advantage of the 2 cocktails for £8 offer and the craft beers that they have on offer. The second time was the following Monday when I visited with friends for lunch. This time thankfully the kitchen was open but our friendly waitress told us that there were several items on the menu unavailable including the ribs I had been looking forward to. One of my friends had the Tiger prawn, chorizo, potato and smoked salmon fricassee except when it arrived "chef forgot to put the smoked salmon in". So, some issues with the kitchen but the food, what was available and when it was available was good. The fricassee didn't seem to suffer from lack of Salmon and the bill was discounted a little to reflect that missed item.Craft beers and cocktails were great and the same staff member who was on duty both Saturday and Monday was very pleasant and apologetic about the minor issues.

5 of us enjoyed a great evening meal at the potting shed last week. Staff are all very friendly, food was lovely, there was a great buzz about the place. We had an 8yr old who polished off his duck spring rolls then the iron bru ribs - meat fell off the bone. My vegan curry was delish and my husband had very tasty pork belly. Sadly we were too full for pudding! Craft beers are available and bar staff were more than happy to help pick one.....we saw people of all ages enjoying meals and drinks. A great find and we will deffo be back!

Booked in advance for a table for 7 on Bank Holiday Friday night. The place was buzzing - really good atmosphere. Staff very friendly and laid back. Food was good - something suitable for all from teenagers to adults. The ribs were the highlight. Service was good though the drinks were a bit slow to arrive - but the staff were very apologetic. Total bill was £200 for 7 - everybody had 2 courses and a couple had 3, also included 2 bottles and a carafe of decent wine. It's a bit out of the centre of Edinburgh but only 10 mins in a taxi and in the student area so pretty lively. Definitely would go back.(Doesn't take Amex!)

Visited Edinburgh in April 2017 and stayed just around the corner from this delightful place. The staff were so helpful and friendly, the food extremely tasty and the atmosphere just welcoming and relaxing. We had the full three courses and each one a delight - chef even made me the vegan curry with chicken (yes I know..but I need protein and the dish just sounded delish - I wasn't disappointed!) It's a good, well rounded menu - plenty of choice with an added 'meat of the day' and 'fish of the day' - a good selection of vegan options too for those that don't eat any animal products. We were full after our starters and mains but with such a good pudding menu - the top button got un-popped and managed to fit it in ;) A vast amount of choices of the drink front - the guy who served us gave us a few tasters and recommendations to help us decide on which ale to go for. If I lived in Edinburgh - this would most certainly become a regular visiting ground for eating out or even just having a drink with friends.

Chose to come here for something "unusual" for our day trip to Edinburgh. A little out of the way, and thank God for Map Navigation on our mobiles!!This bar is HUGE! And they have free, very strong, wifi too.Although we we visited in the middle of a Friday afternoon, the place was deserted, which was a shame. But it meant we had the pick of places to sit and got served really quickly.I opted for a Pornstar Martini. It was very nice, but not the best one I've ever had. It was a little on the sour side.My friend had Flaming R-um Bargo, which as the name suggests, was set alight at the bar. She loved it.Cocktails would've been better if they'd been 241 or there was some kind of happy hour. Quirky bar.

Booked this restuarant six weeks ago for six people. We were shown to our table which was a booth a bit of a squeeze and told we are very busy tonight, surely if booked well in advance a bigger table would of been allocated. After ordering drinks they came and worst I have tasted. Food then arrived and which consisted of burgers with chicken and haggis and were cold. Needless to say no tips were left and we will not be back. Great places to eat in Edinburgh but this is not one of them.

After seeing the potting shed in the guardians 10 best restaurants in Edinburgh we were keen to give it a go. The interior and decor are great, with a really unique theme and interesting layout, the live music gave a good atmosphere and was a real highlight. We visited, having booked on a busy Saturday night and maybe, on a totally different day the experience would have been a lot better. The menu certainly looked good, hearty and quirky dishes, most with a Scottish take, such as 'iron bru ribs'On arrival our waiter told us they had run out of pizzas and ribs, which ruled out 1/3 of the menu - never mind there's plenty of other options. We ordered duck spring rolls to share and were told portion size was two each so when it arrived barely 1 1/2 we queried the size and the waiter admitted they had reduced the portions to make the food go further as they were running out!! After this things went from bad to worse...Our 'beast' burgers arrived looking more like miniature burgers and chicken burger was barely a chicken wing... far from a hearty burger - same story, the food was put out and until we challenged the half portions no admission of an issue or offer to reduce the price was made. In the end several items were taken off our bill but only after we challenged and left hungry!Wouldn't bother going back, there's too many genuinely great places in Edinburgh

Loved this place, This place has a warm, friendly and quirky feel about it and glad I was told about this place by a mate who we met there.Plenty of choices of drinks and food so we decided to have a late dinner there, although they were busy and had a small band playing music they went out of there way to accommodate us.Firstly the waitress service was top knotch and the food was also good and plentysome (£110 x6 of us).I would have given it 5 stars but for one issue which was a bit frustrating...The time it took to get served at the bar 15-20mins (yes some people were getting specialised drinks but there just wasn't enough staff at the bar) maybe someone phoned it sick!! Anyway great place and will return :-)

Best of this place is the ambiance. Nice interior and live music on the night we visited this place. I was a bit dissappointed by the steak of the day, which was steak with teryaki sauce, egg noodles and soy sauce, tasted way to sour for me. However, when I mentioned it, the waitress took it seriously and really checked it with the chef. Cheesecake was lovely!

As the name suggests, a lot of plant pots, plants (unsure real or fake) and place decorated like a shed. I like the fact that all the furniture here looks rustic and recycled. The light bulbs here are encased in plant pots and the ceiling are decorated with zinc sheets you use for sheds. Ordered a half a kilo of mussels as starter in white wine, cream and shallots. The mussels were large and succulent, which is what I look for in mussels. The sauce however was a tad bland. Could do with a bit extra seasoning. The main was lamb shoulder in pee puree, mini honey roasted carrots, Haggis bon bons and shallow fried shredded potatoes. When I ordered, I asked the waitress if the lamb was cooked pink as I prefer my lamb pink. She said yes. However, the lamb was actually slow cooked, pulled and then assembled into a log during presentation. It didn't bother me as it tasted like they were properly cooked and tender. The mini roasted carrots are to die for and the haggis bons bons were deep fried and makes me gagging for more. Presentation was flawless and it was a really perfect meal for me.The waiters and waitresses here are really friendly, helpful and polite. Would try come back here again for another meal.

Certainly in my well traveled experience in fact I would say the worst in Europe I have ever experienced.I was passing by and I was enticed by the £2.50 drinks offer. It seemed really posh on the outside , it looked like a good place to unwind and relax. As soon as I went in the Assistant ( It could well have been the duty manager judging by her pretensous demmenour ) didn't look to pleased. I sat down at a table it looked like a table service place no one was at the bar in fact the place was not busy at all. The Assistant was standing over a table where a middle aged tourist looking couple were seated. It became clear to me latter on that there was some double standards at work in respect of customer service. She asked me if I wanted drink or food then just turned away to go back to a long conversation with the other table. Even though she could see I was ready to order she walked passed me and I had to call over to ask about the special offer , Her fake smile soon turned into a contemptuous scowl. After taking my order she said something from a distance which I did not catch. I was looking through the menu then I suddenly felt someone prodding me in the arm. I have never been man handeled like that in a bar ever. Of course it was the rude Assistant who just said its £2.50 and walked away before I had the chance to reply or question her appalling manners , she did not even ask me how I wanted the drink I assume it was just done in a slap dash manner with some old piece of lemon. I have visited similar posh places and places like this on the continent; Never ever had someone demand the payment up front in such a cheap and degrading manner ever !!!!!!!!!. I have also been in similar establishments in my own country Scotland and never received such stuck up treatment. To cap it all the Assistant was not dressed smartly looked like she had just come in from her own personal living room to be honest. I waited for some time to be presented with a legitimate bill or the drink (the product ) but nothing was forthcoming the bar was virtually empty so there was no excuse , it seemed she was just going out of her way to be offensive and insulting. After a few unproductive moments the obvious happened I walked out something I have never done in any bar ever even the most roughest ones. To me it appears they want to present themselves as a posh place , but from my own experience lack customer service skills for all customers. I have a feeling the service carried racist snobbish overtones with its veneer of double standards. I could not recommend this place at all , its one of these new types of eating establishments that are springing up all over the city and killing the local character with genaric products and unfriendly and ineffective members of staff especialy when they get the whiff that your not some loaded tourist or souther student posh type. Even given what it appears to be I would think a tourist from another part of the world such as the States would be appalled. If they had served me with some good manners dn pleasent manner I might have left a tip however perhaps business skills is another deficit of this establishment.

I booked a table for a big group for a Christmas Lunch. They were very accommodating when I had to increase the booking number of people from 8 to 12 (which I really appreciated as in other places, these could be an issue when only advising with only a few days in advance)It was "surprise" when we arrived to the venue and we did not find the table set up (I appreciate this will not be the style of the place but still, what is the point of booking a table for a big group in the festive period when there is no even a sign of "Reserved" in the table?) There were only 2-3 small tables and about 3-4 waiting staff members but still, they were not in the table as we arrive to ask us for an initial drink. I spoke over the phone with so many members of staff to arrange the booking, pay deposit and change number of people in various days although every time I phoned I have asked to speak with the manager, I have been told that he was too busy to get the call so I have to make every request to the waiting staff who are obviously not prepared enough for these type of duty. The table was not set up, not reserved sign in the table, despite confirming over the phone that we were ordering the Christmas menu on the day, we were given just the normal menu on the day.The next one was when the waitress came to take the order but we advice her that we were waiting for the last person to arrive when then, she said that the kitchen was closing at 3 pm???And our table was reserved at 2:30 pm for 12 people. I have asked over the phone if they will require a pre-order and they confirmed this was not required at all but then they tell us that the kitchen closes just half an hour after our booking time?? How long do you expect it will take for 12 people to arrive to the booked table, order drinks and decide about a menu? Is that really fair to the kitchen staff that will be tired and looking forward to their break at 3 o'clock for a big order of 12 people to come through? When I told the waitress that nobody advice on the phone about the kitchen closing at 3?! she said that our booking was at 2:30 (implying that we were 5 minutes late)Well done for the waiting staff in the bar (who then served us for the rest of the evening as, I guess, the rude waitress was on her break), well done for the kitchen staff and the food.Poor management (definitely as all of these could have been improved by good instructions from their manager) and some of the waiting staff really rude, not trying and definitely, not interested in working. There was no music in the background for moments during the evening. This is a real shame as had it been a better experience, we would have returned as we liked the atmosphere, the place and the style of this quirky place.I didn't complaint on the day as I did not see a point to do so (I did not notice a manager on the day) I just told the waitress in the bar that I felt sorry for the kitchen staff that had to prepared a menu for 12 people just 5 minutes before they were supposed to go on their break and had I known about the timings, we would have booked much earlier. I repeated this a couple of times and I was expecting the manager to come and speak to me (as the person responsible for the booking) and clarify the situation but obviously, it never happened. The website does not mention about closing times for the kitchen either, maybe they should consider this too.Very disappointing

Dropped into the Potting Shed for a spot of Saturday lunch with family through from the west and it was delightfully delicious. We all had various burgers including one spicy bean burger and all were devoured with gusto. We booked a table at the Potting Shed for four people. When we arrived and stood waiting to be seated the member of staff took a few minutes to finish her (personal) telephone call before coming over. We explained that there would be 5 of us, not 4, and she said "Well you can all squeeze into this booth" (for 4). We pointed out an empty table but she claimed this was reserved - during the whole time we were there, no one came near it! The restaurant was pretty empty and there would have been other places to seat us.When the booking was made we had specified that we would need to be away by 7.15 to go to the theatre. The service was so appallingly slow that we only managed a main course. The waitress took ages to take our drinks order and then we had to go and fetch her to take the food order - she was too busy chatting to two women whom we assumed were her friends. We had to fetch napkins and cutlery from a neighbouring table. The food was good but we won't be paying a return visit.I've given an overall 2* rating - that is 4* for the food and 0 for the service.

I've lived in Edinburgh for four years now and it is rare to come across a place with service as poor as Potting Shed. In general I find service in Edinburgh establishments to be good, kind and helpful. I don't write this review lightly as I've experienced this multiple times over the past year and a half. At the bar, it does not seem to matter how many or few patrons are waiting, I have consistently waited to be served for at least 5-10 minutes the last three times I have been there. Last night we had table service in a big group celebrating a friend's successful viva. The staff had to be reminded multiple times to come over to take our order and at the end when we were to split the check, they asked us to come up to the bar individually and pay our bills. Well that's fine I suppose, but then a staff member had the audacity to come over just as we were leaving and demand a service charge for parties of 8 or more (and in rather rude manner), when they had barely provided any service! The food is fine I suppose, but I recommend other places with great beer, better food and MUCH better service (Hanging Bat is consistently excellent).

We were pondering around trying to find a great place to eat in Edinburgh but the selection is so big and we couldn't make our mind up, so ended up going to the nearest place to us when we got hungry. From the outlook it didn't look too busy (which probably isn't a good sign) and the menu is fairly plain (unsure whether they specialise in something). Either way the food we were given was not very appetising for the price we paid. We chose to have lots of sides instead of mains and thought chips with curry sauce was a good choice... definitely not! The curry sauce was the worst I'd tasted and it had what tasted like out of date sour cream on it. We also were served some stale bread. I can take positives that the onion rings and prawns we had were nice but they were also overvalued considering you got 4 onion rings for £3-£4. I think maybe it's more of a place to go for a drink though and it did have a lot of choices of beers and other drinks.

We happened upon this place and were very pleased we did. While it took some time to get service initially once we did things couldn't have been better. Sam was very patient in helping us make the best choice from the Craft beers, giving us little tasters until we decided upon Shipwreck which we thoroughly enjoyed. Then he took us to our choice of table and arrived back soon after with a carafe of iced water. Nice! We ordered burgers which we very tasty and served with a red slaw that was memorable for all the right reasons. Deserts were mixed. The sticky toffee was a goodly portion and delicious, while the espresso crane brûlée was a wee bit small, albeit with a massive biscotti on the side. More brûlée please. A very good atmosphere boosted by a large student clientele. 4 pints, 2 burgers and 2 deserts = £45.

I know this is a weird thing to pick up on but it is a sign for me that they use great quality ingredients. The potting shed theme of the bar is good fun, although I think it heads more towards industrial than potting shed in some instances. Things started well, we were greeted promptly, shown to our table and food and drinks orders taken but after that we were pretty much ignored for 90 minutes. what was more frustrating was that waiting staff regularly passed our table and looked over but still left us with dirty plates and empty beer glasses. When i did finally get someones attention to ask for more drinks they cleared the plates and promised to come back for a drinks order but promptly forgot so i had to waive someone down again. When we finished those drinks the whole process started again. The food was pretty average, the pizza had a soggy base and was overloaded with toppings. On the plus side the beer has got much better since my last visit and when i spoke to a member of staff at the end about the issues with the service they were very apologetic and quickly removed the service charge from the bill. We both had the cassoulet ; a mess of tasty beans with a crispy fried confit duck leg sitting proudly on top.Very good, though a little salty, and of course a winter dish, rather than for a sunny august day?Not a huge portion, considering it was at a dinnertime price, but it is a trendy sort of place, so prices are not low.Our waiter was efficient and friendly.

I so wanted to love this place....the interior is quirky and fun and is beautifully inline with the garden theme and the menu and food good but sadly the service was awful! Maybe being there on a busy Saturday during the Festival was not the best time and I really hope that this is the case because all the 'tools' are there in the shed but there are not enough experienced people to use them! Strangely we seemed to have a succession of servers rather than someone covering our area of tables which is the norm and even getting our drink order taken and delivered took 20 minutes! One of our table asked about beers and was told that they were on the blackboard above the bar. When he pointed out that he was squashed into his seat at the side of the bench table and couldn't see, she very grudgingly read out a few to him, not a great start! We had to ask for someone to take our food order again and although the food then arrived reasonably quickly, it was ages before someone cleared our plates and then another wait to get someone to give us a desert menu. Staff were obviously really busy but many of the young servers had no customer skills at all, there were very few apologies and young chap taking our desert order was abrupt and disinterested. The only unsolicited, positive attention we got was as we left when a couple to staff members said goodbye to us...I hope that this is just a festival blip but as visitors from the UK who had looked forward to dining here with friends and whom are unlikely to be here again for another year, it was a disappointment. Staff structure and training needs attention before the door to the Potting Shed remains closed!

Had to asked to be served and then took ages to get food, bill and then to pay bill. We generally tip at restaurants but had decided not to on this occasion because the service was so poor (on a not very busy day). Then, on paying we were told a 10pc service charge is compulsory and it's apparently on the menu (not that we saw it). The compulsory gratuity charge appears to act as a disincentive to good service. Disappointed and will not return.

Visiting from abroad. I always enjoy Nandos when visiting the UK and I even travelled all the way from the City Center because this is a halal certified store. At the store I ordered my food at 19:50 and got my food at 20:22. The guy told me to wait a few times but waiting for more than half an hour shouldn’t be the case it wasn’t even that busy. Also it was way too cold in the store but then again it’s the ocean terminal. Asked for a refund and was happy to get it. He could have offered me something else or something easy while waiting. I just went away all hungry and mad. Very sad.
