Fantastic food and drinks and service! Really enjoyed our lunch out on a rainy Monday! We had a few tapas style starters and then had the delicious lamb that melted off the bone, with fries.

Lovely , quirky pub with sumptuous en suite rooms. The restaurant featured Basque Cuisine which was done and presented very well. Only downside is that the buses in the area are non existent and the train station nearest is Pangbourne. Non Car folk from London areas would have to fork out quite a lot for taxis from the station. It is a real gem and surrounded by scenic Berkshire countryside.

Hidden gem. Great pub and lovely location. Sitting outside looking out onto the fields and not hearing road noise makes this pub a lovely place to sit and have a drink. Didn’t have food on this visit but watching the plates walk past my eyes to the tables of hungry people has made me want to visit again and have some food. Would also like to try one of the rooms out for a special night away with the hubby.

We used to come to the Pot Kiln in its previous life as a game pub and were interested to see how this new iteration stood up. They’ve obviously spent lots of money on refubishing the pub and the bedrooms and it shows. The rooms are a good size and comfortable. It’s lovely and quiet at night due to the location although we did find the rooms a bit on the warm side. The new Spanish based menu is definitely very different to before. The food we had was excellent from start to finish, including the superb breakfast which is included In the very reasonable room rate. The menu was slightly confusing initially and required a waitress to explain it. This seemed to be repeated at other tables so a suggestion is that upon seating your waitress explains your menu. One other small suggestion….it seems that the waitresses (who were quite young) seemed to need a bit of direction. They were very nice and polite but we felt that service was a touch slow and disjointed. This did not detract from our enjoyment in any way. We will definitely be back to explore more of the menu!

Hard to fault; a spectacular setting, good service, outstanding food and a great vibe. We shared the starters, tapas style and ordered them all, which I recommend. The flavour combinations and the interesting menu, make this a very good option. We'll return, regularly....

From all of our stays in our honeymoon this was so far the most fantastic one. Originally we didn't even plan to stay here but a car accident forced us to find accommodation nearby. After a great dinner I have to thank the tyre-fairy for letting our tyre explode just in the right location, as we just had the most delicious spanish dinner in our life. I can only recommand booking a stay here, the rooms are cosy and very comfortable, the service is fantastic and the food just outstanding!

We ended here by accident because our car broke down on our honeymoon. Best possible accident by a long shot. Excellent service, comfy rooms and i can‘t stress this enough: The best food we ever had. Been to the Pot Kiln over the years but the latest iteration is definitely the best. Food was great particularly the perfectly cooked hake and the vegetables and the PK chips with bravas seasoning were fantastic. We finished the lot which is rare for us. Staff were up to the Royal Oak standard which is very high. I loved the open kitchen and the general atmosphere. We are already planning our next visit. Yum.

Having been impressed with our first ‘revisit’ to The Potkiln there was more to offer and we wanted it. Galician blond “txuletón” – aged Basque rib of beef, after a few nibbles it really did the job. Cooked over open coals it was so tasty, proper BEEF, in capitals for a reason. The pictures tell the story, another smashing meal, relaxed service and yes, we are booked back for a third visit tomorrow, a must go place for some Spanish umph.

Stayed the night. Arrived just before midnight but manager was extremely helpful making arrangements so we could access the room when the pub had already closed. Room was very nicely decorated, good facilities (tea/coffee) and quality soap products in the bathroom. Bed was extremely comfortable. Breakfast was included in the price and it was very tasty! Nice to see that they catered for gluten intolerance. Very nice location and very quiet! If we lived nearer we would consider going for a meal as the menu looked very appealing. Fabulous on every level. Stayed for one night with two other couples. It has been refurbished to a very high standard, following a takeover, and had only been open for a couple of months. But everything was excellent. Our room was very comfortable, although it did get quite stuffy overnight. The restaurant was the star of the show. It is spacious and comfortable. Service was extremely efficient, helpful and friendly. The menu is strongly influenced by cuisines of the Basque country. The food was outstanding. My wife and I had the Catalan fish stew, which comes with focaccia. Utterly fabulous, packed with monkfish, hake, mussels, clams, prawn, and squid. One set of friends had the 12-hour lamb shoulder and loved it. The other couple had lamb chuletas (chops), and were very happy with that. My only real gripe was that there are only a few items on the menu that are available for an individual to order. The very best dishes are all for two to share, and this isn’t negotiable. Prices are at the higher end of average, but worth every penny. Breakfast was also high quality, with some interesting, Spanish inspired twists. The orange juice was from a carton, though. Freshly squeezed would have been more in line with the Catalan theme. Our little group of three couples meet up once a year for a night away. We’ve stayed in some nice places, but this is the first one we’ve ever stayed at where we’ve all agreed that we’ll come back next year.

I stayed here for one night and I loved it (June 2024). I travel solo a lot for work and I’m always keen to find unique spaces other than the Premier Inn who charge £65-250 for one night and offer no facilities. I was en route from London to Berkshire and then home to Yorkshire! The Pot Kiln is excellent value for money. I paid £120 for one night. Relatively easy to reach off the M4 (might be tricky in wet Winter) and plenty of parking immediately next to bedrooms and the pub/restaurant. Beautiful location. 🌲 The kitchen was closed, but the outdoor pizza oven was compensating for all visitors. It was delicious. The local (Renegade) brewery is on tap and is worth trying. The restaurant is spacious and lovely on the eye. I bet this place is buzzing when word gets out; I learned it has only been open for 3 weeks. I stayed in room 4. The bedroom was very clean and comfortable. Piping hot shower and bottled water. The room lacks a small chair to sit at the table to work (if you need to sit on your laptop). The toilet is really close to the sink; will be tricky for large/vulnerable people to reach. The biggest concern was no window or air conditioning in the room. At about 11pm the thermostat was showing 27C with no air flow. I had to open the bathroom window and door to cool the room down. I did wonder what it would be like during a rare heatwave. However, it was a joy and incredibly peaceful. Coffee machine and NO TV (maybe a conscious decision) in the room helps guests to relax. In the morning the cows 🐄 are literally next to the entrance to the pub. I’d love to see this business thrive, so I hope my feedback is helpful and not viewed as a criticism. I had a wonderful 12 hours! Thank you 🙏

We've always had a great meal at The Pot Kiln, whether for lunch or for dinner, inside or in the garden. But this last visit was very disappointing. While the atmosphere was perfect, the food was not. We had the roast lamb, for two to share, with carrots. It was dull, insipid, and boring - memorable for the wrong reasons. A great restaurant for locally sourced game and meat. Very cosy and authentic rural atmosphere. Helpful and friendly staff, we were very well looked after. The food is very good quality but not outstanding, which you might expect considering the price. Some of us had the lamb sharer. Gorgeous meat and high quality veg, potatoes and yorkshires. However at that price I don't think the portions were generous enough. Shouldn't have to ask for more roast potatoes when you've paid £75 for a dish for two people. So do go! Enjoy this lovely restaurant, but it is slightly over priced for what it is.

Very poor experience not just food wise (photo shows the lack of meat in the pie which was in no way appropriate for the price point of £28) however made a terrible visit by an very aggressive local customer who took exception to our dissatisfaction and was extremely aggressive and rude leaving us shocked and shaken. This was made even more intimidating by the lack of intervention of the barman who shrank behind the bar as the local became more and more agitated. We were told never to come back and we surely will not.

Decided to head out for dinner on a wet & windy Friday night in October, as fancied a night off from cookings and had a very nice lunch here back in October 22. There were 6 of us in our party, 2 adults and our 4 children. I'd told the kids how great the venison was and how much I was looking forward to it! We arrived (tried to book but no answer on the phone) and no issues getting a table as it was very quiet for a Friday night. I was a little surprised given a Friday. We ordered 4 Vension and 2 Ducks which duly arrived. However, all of the vension dishes were cold, including the mash. We explained to our waitress and she said no problems she would get it rectified. Dished came back and we tucked in again, but they were still luke warm. The vension was a lot more tough than on my last visit. I mentioned to our waitress that the food was still not hot. We got some complementary french fries as kids loved them and they were hot unlike the mash. To be fair the waitress apologised and said to make up for the cold vension / mash, she'd sorted free desserts for all of us, which was a nice gesture. Desserts were very nice the ice cream profiteroles, kids and adults liked these a lot. It would have got 5 stars had the main courses been hot. Annoying as I love the location of the place and the proper home cooked food. Hopefully my experience was just a one off, but in these tough times for restaurants you need to be firing on all cylinders at all times. As were all feeling the pinch at the moment and a bad experience means we might not head back again.

Sadly underwhelmed by what I had hoped would be a lovely Sunday lunch. The pub itself was lovely, traditional, warm and welcoming just as you would expect from a country pub. The staff were a little hit and miss, some friendly but others appeared preoccupied and less than friendly. There was a wait for the food which would not have been a problem if the food had come to the table hot and well cooked, sadly the food was lukewarm, the roast potatoes were hard, the venison steak was chewy, mash was lumpy and cold and the veg portions small which was a disappointment to us all. This made the whole experience a little bit of an overpriced let and down. I do not have any issue with certain price points for food but for what was being charged here today I expected at the least for the food to be hot. We actually left feeling like we could have had a better Sunday lunch at the local Toby carvery.

A very peaceful, secluded location with a clear specialty in game! We stayed overnight in a quiet cottage adjacent to the restaurant. Aside from the slightly noisy extractor fan and dripping shower, the room itself was well-appointed, warm and with effective blackout blinds. Dinner was exquisite: we tried the butternut squash soup; game pie; guineafowl skewers and venison pave steak. Breakfast the next morning, albeit served a little later than we would have preferred, was exquisite. We’d love to come back for a stay, perhaps in the summer

We went out for dinner on a Friday night. The pub was relatively quiet but the bar area was a bit noisy making the resturant quite echoey. One of us had brilliant food - crayfish cocktail and venison pave. The venison melted in the mouth and despite the generous portion could have eaten this for pudding too! My husband's food wasn't as good, sausages were very "lamby" and not in a good way (he loves lamb), and the meat in the game pie was tough. We both went for the lemon tart/brulee which was lovely. Service was spot on although the waitress suggested alcohol full beers when asked for alcohol free (there were no alcohol free beers). All in we had a lovely evening, but the food was hit and miss.

Sadly our recent experience means we won't go back, after having had lovely meals here for years. It's about a 35 min drive for us, and we have many more better and better value places nearer us. This experience was marred by a starter of mozzarella and tomatoes. The cheese was fine, but the unripe, hard and tasteless tomatoes less so. The bitter and yellowing pea shoots draped over the top were not nice. The shoulder of venison was ok, but a small portion for 2, and a steep price. The small jug of gravy had waited quite a while before coming to the table and a thick top layer was coagulated. The red cabbage was fine, and the mashed potatoes were the best thing about the meal. But it all felt smaller and less expertly or carefully prepared than in the past. I'd forgotten that the desserts have usually tasted just about sugar-free to me in the past, and I was sorry that I had forgotten when I ordered the tarte tatin. Not nice, just very heavy on the cinnamon, and with a wierd (although crisp) pastry disc under the apples, as if it had been cooked separately. Had to request the salt, that came in a salt mill that barely worked. The view and setting are still knock-out, but that's not enough to go back for.

Completely underwhelming. Waited forever to be served and when we were eventually served the person serving was less than friendly. The food was just very average and in my opinion it was very overpriced for what it was. It’s a shame, it’s a great location but this is a tough market to be in for sure, there was just nothing that would tempt me to go back ever in the future. And someone needs to get some lighting sorted for customers leaving the front door and walking to the car park at the rear of the building - dangerous and very unappealing.

I went here for a lunch with my parents on my own suggestion after remembering coming here a year or so ago (probably more) and remembered things positively. Shame I can't say that anymore, I'm pretty sure me and my parents where the only people there with maybe an exception for 3 or so other people just drinking. The fact you're the only people means service should be good no? Well quite frankly we felt pushed to leave as soon as possible. Due to gardening services where they had a leafblower going full blast less than 10 meters away, for an amount so small you could just use a brush it was absolutely deafening. What I think was the owner or manager came up to apologize to us, which is fine... But the fact it continued no less than 5 minutes later is astounding, this time a spectacular 12 meters away. No-one stopped them from doing this until we'd eventually left. Saying that though it didn't take long as the food portions were absolutely tiny, yes two of us only had starters but when you're paying 12 pounds a fish based starter with nice bread you'd expect enough there to fit on more than just one tiny piece of bread. Probably why they only gave us one incredibly thin piece of bread. They tasted good, but absolutely no value when also comparing to other places listing the same price and also having the same quality. My own was Game Satay skewers. These were tiny... I managed to finish two pieces of it in the time it took the waitress to walk to and from the kitchen with our thirds meal. Same story as before, tasted DECENT nothing spectacular and absolutely tiny. And the same could be said for my dads pie, frankly £30 for this feels like a joke. This is more expensive than most Michelin star restaurant level meals or for a top class stake and this was neither. He was pretty neutral about it but he's had better pies. This is all very sad, I genuinely can't remember the last time I was this upset and hungry after eating out, it really soured our mood as we all left hungry. We wanted to love this place because the location is amazing. I just hope things improve but at the moment I certainly won't be coming back till I hear good things about it.

I read the Trip Advisor reviews before we went so had mixed feelings but we had a 100% experience with the food, bedroom and service. Bedrooms are small but have everything you need for an overnight stay. Beds are comfortable, tea/coffee and bottled water in the room. Toiletries also supplied. Breakfast was also very good with lots of local produce. We went to the farm shop on the way home that supplied The Pot Kiln and took some lovely local food home to enjoy. We had an really enjoyable stay and are looking forward to going back. Thank you to all the team.

Food on the expensive side even for this pub. Meal for 2 with 2 starters and 2 drinks was over £100. Starters were OK, a lot of grissle in one and staff didn't seem to know how to handle someone saying the food wasn't the best? Service was decent but had better in the past here. I would definitely say its now on the overpriced side of good. Mains were small portions but filling and tasty. Starters were OK (aside from the aforementioned issue) but there's way too much sauce with the dishes... Seems wasteful. We come most years for our anniversary but affraid to say this year was a little disappointing but probably because it's been so good previously.

I’ve frequented the Pot Kiln numerous times over the last seven years since we moved to the area. I’ve always been very happy but something seems to have changed, the service is slow and the staff seem disinterested. Not all the drinks and dishes offer value for money. The Draught ales are superb but to be charged £14.50 for a kids meal which consists of 2 sausages, 1 piece of broccoli and some sad looking chips is excessive.

My parents and I always celebrate Mothers' Day early to avoid they hype. We visited The Pot Kiln for the first time last week and were 'bowled away'. for a while my scepticism was fuelled by the 'sample menu' on their website but it seems that it is pretty much 'set in stone' and has been for many years. This is not a place that you will ever 'fall over by accident' but it is well worth the detour off the beaten path. Cheap it isn't but the quality of the food was superb. For starters we had two portions of 'a Spanish style lamb sausage' which was delicious and one halloumi chips. All were tasty and matched with appropriately spiced dips. For mains we had one vegetarian pithivier (eaten by a carnivore who didn't regret it!) and two of us shared a juicy and flavoursome prime rib... no disappointments and we have take enough steak home for a couple of rounds of steak sandwiches!! The mains were sublime and followed by equally mouth watering desserts - profiteroles; baked Alaska; and artisan ice cream. Thank you Rocky and Co. for your hospitality and exceptional service. We are not local but we will be back to one of your music nights shortly.

Wow, what a fantastic meal. We went as a family of four to celebrate our son’s birthday. We had game skewers for starters, which had the tastiest satay sauce. In fact, the best satay sauce I’ve tasted. We then had the venison and prime rib sharers. Both were equally delicious in their own way. The venison was melt in the mouth tender and the prime rib was cooked to perfection, served with a variety of vegetables, roasties and Yorkshire pudding. We were too full to eat dessert. We enjoyed the laid back ambience and would be equally as good stopping over for a pint during a country walk. Very friendly and welcoming staff. We will definitely be back and spread the word. 👍👌👍👌

The recent reviews do not reflect my experience of this restaurant. I went twice in a month - once with each of my trencherman sons. Starters - pigeon breast with bacon and balsamic vinegar - gamey, gamey, gamey and the pigeon meat chewy and rich. Game satay - yes previous reviewer they're dry - that's game for you - tasty, clearly produced from proper wild birds and a delicious peanut sauce. Now the venison shoulder is to die for. Smokey meat, quite chewy compared to commercial meats - lovingly served in a glaze with wintry flavours of buttery mash and red cabbage. Orange and lemon sorbet is a good shout as dessert after such a rich offering. I was driving (well they're aren't many other options here!) so I had just one glass of the cab/shiraz wine which complements this food well. Why were there such strong opinions in recent reviews? I think that game is an acquired taste, and many people are, most unfortunately, sold on commercially produced chicken. My opinion is that this restaurant does it well. I can't comment for most of the main courses, and the venison shoulder is the premium dish (it's not cheap) which may be why it was so good. I will have a rant at the reviewer who said that it is "not acceptable in this day and age" not to accommodate the vegans. Why do you think that it is your right that a restaurant provides for you? If I said I would only eat, let us say, reptiles, would that allow me to roundly criticize a restaurant for not catering to my tastes? It's a commercial decision and if you don't like it - go elsewhere. I laughed aloud when the review went on to say someone was "allergic to dairy". Is there such a thing outside your bizarre, self pitying world? I will be back in the summer - see how your the seasonal changes in your menu gets on.

Poor service, slow and unprofessional. Not good value. I had 3 dry prawns on a skewer with a bowl of cocktail sauce and a lemon wedge £13.50. Totally overcooked partridge for main. Cheeseboard good but the Barkham Blue was old and going brown. All too expensive for the quality. I wont be back anytime soon.

Went for Sunday Roast. Superb. Portion size is excellent and the cost is exceptional value. Each roast is a sharer so every serving is effectively a freshly cooked joint and the cooking and produce are excellent. The desserts are great. We came here from London as our friends live nearby and I am gutted this place isn’t closer to home. Thoroughly recommend and will definitely be back

My second visit to this restaurant. I could not believe how poor the food quality was on the first visit, I returned to try again. WRONG . Poor quality, badly presented, poor value. Example: 3 overcooked grilled prawns £13.50 / 3 dry game (satay) sticks with peanut sauce £13.50. The Chef (if one is employed) clearly lacks talent. On the upside; the table staff are friendly & efficient, the toilets clean ( men's outside only) the dining room traditional old school pub décor. Could be pleasant in the summer months although the exterior areas need investment. Perhaps best to give it a miss, plenty of better options locally.

An enjoyable evening at The Pot Kiln for our group. The venue itself is warm and welcoming. You can get a drink in the warm bar beforehand and the staff are wonderfully welcoming. Furniture is pleasantly rustic, though could be maintained more. (I had to switch both the chair in the bar and the chair at the table I had as the wooden chair joints were loose and threatened collapse!) Wine list is modestly sized, but good and there some very good reasonable options. The menu is exciting and centres game. In retrospect the insalata caprese is an odd option to offer in January, and the tomatoes tasted like all tomatoes in winter. Satay guinea fowl skewers were good. Mains were ok. Good sauces, but venison pavé was a bit tough. Profiterole dessert was really excellent. The service was very friendly and on this occasion would probably make us think about coming back more than the food. Bill (including roughly half bottle of wine each and an extra glass) came to just under £80/head. For that price I’d have preferred to be wowed by the food, but the dessert was the only thing that came close. A good evening, but not sure that on that evening it deserved its Michelin recommendation. May have been an off evening in the kitchen, as other reviewers have clearly loved it, so we’ll be back to give it another go, because the warm-hearted generous atmosphere made up for a lot. Thank you.

Fica em um lindo lugar na área rural nos arredores de Londres. Bom para ir por um dia almoçar. Bom para caminhar antes e apreciar a paisagem do lugar.

No vegan options even though we booked a week in advance and then phoned. Initial reaction 'no vegan option on the menu', so asked if they could talk to the chef. After conversation we were then told there is a vegetarian option but it can't be adapted to vegan. Explained member of party was allergic to dairy. The best they could offer was side orders of vegetables and fries. Not acceptable in this day and age

A wonderful country pub and restaurant with a small number of guest rooms. You'll find it down such a narrow lane that you'll be convinced you've gone the wrong way but its absolutely worth the drive. We had an excellent meal of shoulder of venison and some great local beer. We also stayed overnight in one of the rooms. It was cozy and well decorated, and the breakfast was delicious.

Absolutely fantastic food and service. Such a lovely pub. Well priced for such amazing and rich food. Lacked a little atmosphere on a Friday lunch time in the back area though. Great service too, everyone was really friendly and welcoming. We will come back very regularly, nothing more to want from a pub!

Cosy pub with brilliant service and great food. I enjoyed the mulligatawny soup made with venison and not chicken. The chef is clearly creative and knows how to work ingredients. The forest pie was delicious but the profiterole at the end was probably the best dessert I've ever enjoyed!! Hope to visit again very soon and enjoy the local walk too

Absolutely fabulous staff, delicious food, charming spot - only minus one star as it is not cheap! But honestly the service here is second to none and the food sublime. We were looked after beautifully at lunch today by a really charming woman who couldn't have been kinder to us. The venison steak was perfect, as was the veggie pie, and the staff set the tone in the pub for a really relaxing, friendly, happy atmosphere. Worth sitting in roadworks on the M4 for!

I can't praise the Blackbird cafe enough. It's a regular for us, either for coffee and cake or a lunch. Indoor and outdoor seating, friendly service and ( most important) great tasting coffee, cakes and food. I particularly recommend (all the cakes and) the spanankopita - or it's sister filo pie - and the roasted carrot/quinoa salad. YUMMMMMY! (also a great loo stop for bikers)
