Great Sunday lunch for 8 will be going again.

We visited on the spur of the moment for the first time on 13th Feb 2025. We were impressed with the menu choices and the food was absolutely amazing. Highly recommended.

We had a party of 13, including some fussy eaters, but everything went smoothly. The service was excellent, and the food arrived surprisingly fast, even though the place was super busy. The dishes were absolutely delicious and come in huge portions, my partner couldn't even finish the home made faggots. Overall, a fantastic experience, and we're already planning to come back in a couple of weeks to try the new menu. Highly recommend booking in advance.

Booked a table for four to celebrate my friends birthday When we arrived took a while to deal with us only to be told our table would be in the bar This isn’t acceptable I do not book a table on a Saturday night to be placed in the bar with people stood drinking around me They did suggest making a two into a four however we are four adults there simply wasn’t enough room Ended up having to find another location Very disappointed with how we were treated Maybe suggest when taking bookings ask the customer if they mind being sat outside the restaurant

Closes at 3pm, just when we arrived.. but, not a criticism, who wants beer at 3pm on a Wednesday, apart from me ??

Have not been here for years but now it has a new friendly vibe, the fire was lit and the beer well kept.

Years ago this was a regular place to eat, then we moved away, but as now living back fairly local to this pub, we thought we would revisit. We were not disappointed. Lovely warm welcome on arrival, nice variety of option on the menu also had small and large plates and pub classics. All of the group had different meals and everyone was well presented and tasty clean plates all round. The only downside was the deserts the crumble topping was hard and very flour flavoured and cold, the fruit was burning hot and tasted like tinned fruit

We had a really delicious roast dinner last weekend, everything on the plate (a huge amount of variety, which I loved) was cooked perfectly. The meat (lamb for me, beef for my husband) was to die for. And service was good up to the point we received our plates. But sadly from the end of the main meal, service was non existent. We were asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu, to which my husband said yes. 15 minutes later, no menus. The waiter who offered was either standing around by the bar or serving other tables. We tried to get the staff’s attention a few times, but other than a brief smile , no one acknowledged or actually came back to us. It all felt a bit awkward after a while, so we went to the bar and paid for what we had had and left and headed to our favourite cafe for desserts and coffees instead. A poor experience at the end of a really lovely meal.

Warm welcome, plenty of choice for food and drink, including some imaginative, tasty, dishes on the menu. Good value. Will definitely be back.

A nice country pub with a good menu from faggots to pasta to vegetarian tarts. Service was excellent and friendly.

The four of us had a lovely Sunday Lunch. There was plenty of meat and a wide variety of veg, with lots of gravy. Staff were very friendly. Thank you.

Charging extra for roast potatoes and again for cauliflower is just not acceptable. Rip off...crazy margins. But your own roast and plonk in oven....save 75%.

I used to go here a lot but not recently, it was always good. So when meeting up with a friend decided to give this pub a try again. Well, absolutely blown away. Their chef is to be congratulated. Amazing meal, beautifully cooked and presented. Not over priced. So everything about this place is perfect. In fact my friend was so impressed he is going to bring his family here to eat. So a big thankyou for a good experience.

Fantastic Christmas dinner! Had a meal here with a lot of work colleagues and the service was fantastic. Food was quick and tasted amazing. Very attentive staff. Internet was down but we recently had 2 storms but we were all warned beforehand so could bring cash! Lovely place to eat and drink!

We had a fantastic Sunday lunch. The Christmas decorations were wonderful and there was a lovely atmosphere. The waitress was superb, nothing was too much trouble for her.

Our company paid for our Christmas meal, so the turn-out was quite large! The staff were everything you'd hope for: friendly, helpful and pleasant. They all looked calm and relaxed while going about their duties, which made for a nice vibe. We unanimously agreed that the meals were lovely, beautifully constructed with some wonderful flavours and extra special touches. I will be returning with family soon.

As always a wonderful meal..the pub is tastefully decorated for christmas that presents a relaxed atmosphere..the lamb was tender and delicious..my husbands steak was good too.our friend had fcod from Brixham..Really worth a visit.

Delicious food at a very reasonable price. Service was polite and attentive, good menu selection for both adults and children, and everyone enjoyed their meal.

I used to go to the Poplars quite often, but had been reluctant to have a meal there after hearing some critical comments about the standard of food and service after it changed owners. However my friend and I visited today for lunch and had a very pleasant meal. The menu was extensive and both of our meals were very tasty. My mushroom and courgette tagliatelle in a creamy sauce was delicious and my friend's whitebait was nicely presented and a generous helping, even though it was described on the menu as a small plate. The two young ladies who were serving were friendly and our food was delivered quickly even though almost all of the tables in the conservatory and the bar restaurant area were occupied. It was a very positive experience and we will definitely eat here again.

I only popped in for a quiet pint with a friend, and that was just fine. What I really want is to show appreciation for the huge amount of work they must have done to trick the pub out for Halloween (see photo). Everywhere you looked there was something spooky to make you smile; this was not a trivial task to set up. Thanks Poplars.

4 of us booked a table here for lunch 2 had chicken and mushroom pie and 2 had scampi must say the meal's were great,nice place clean and tidy very good staff prices were ok in line with other pubs

Had not been for several years. It did not disappoint. The menu was varied but not lengthy with a choice of small and large plates plus pub classics. The food was very well presented, freshly cooked and delicious. The portions were generous but not overwhelming. The welcome and service was friendly, competent and delightful. We had a lovely time. Last but not least, the prices were a good reflection of all of the above. Book now!

Went here for my father in laws 90th birthday! Lovely meals - big portions - great choice. Staff really friendly. Definitely will visit again soon.

Popped in for lunch with my mum. Had soup of the day which was mushroom soup and fishfinger baguette. Orange pannacotta for dessert. Service was friendly and fast, food was amazing. The place also itself was very cozy. We both loved this place

There was about 18 of us celebrating my husbands birthday. On 29th September. The staff were brilliant. The service and staff wonderful. We couldn't have wished for a better day. A big thank you to all the hard working staff. We wanted for nothing. Highly recommended. THANK YOU ALL.

This is a great place for good bar food. Very good choice of dishes on the menu which are well cooked and tasty - We chose traditional slow cooked lamb shoulder, pie of the day and scampi. Staff are friendly and helpful the pub has a friendly atmosphere.

Good food - we've met here a few times now and the service is top notch as is the food. Can't believe the review in August that complained that peas were clearly frozen (obviously no gardener and no idea of mass catering) I found it good value and a very pleasant venue with no problems with access.

Dropped into the Poplars during a recent stop in the area. We were not disappointed either. The service was excellent by some very attentive staff and the food was extremely nice, superbly cooked, and well presented. Value for money. There is plenty of seating/dining area, but I would imagine it gets busy at the weekends. Highly recommend this extremely popular pub.

Dropped in on a Thursday night whilst in the area for a few days. A fantastic pub that offers great service by very attentive staff. The food was superb, we could not fault any of it. Visited Poplars by chance whilst on holiday and had a gorgeous meal, mushroom soup, zucchini friti and pork belly bites for starters. Mains of lamb kofta, slow roast pork belly and pulled pork burger followed by panacotta and apple & almond tarte all superb, so much so we've just done a return visit before going home. We had the same starters (vegetable soup) and mains of ginger marinated chicken, the slow roast lamb shoulder and the pie of the day - chicken & chorizo all absolutely devine. We forced ourselves to have a dessert, panacotta, chocolate brownie and cheesecake - gorgeous. We all said that if we lived nearby, it would definitely be our local. Thank you for two enjoyable meals.

We chose The Poplars as a suitable venue for a family get together due to it's location, facilities and very helpful manager. It was central to those travelling from South Wales and the West Country. We chose the buffet option which was extensive and very appetising. The food was delicious and plentiful, and because not all the 35-40 family members made it, we were able to take the remaining food away in the provided boxes. All the staff both young and not so young were most helpful and courteous, and made sure we were well catered for and looked after. Although old and traditional, there is ample parking, and has a large enclosed grass area and outside tables and access into the pub is very good. I use a powered wheelchair and entered through the side double doors due to my chair width, though the other entrances are accessible to most. Décor is traditional white walls and beams with soft lighting. My only suggestion would be to make the path from the car park to the side double doors wider and more even for wheelchair access as I went across the grass. There is a disabled WC, but was told it was too small for my powered chair, but again would suit most. I would definitely recommend The Poplars for it's location, ease of parking and access, it's lovely food and warm welcoming staff.

Haven’t been here for a good few years and glad we came back as food was outstanding - best quality and flavours across all 5 of our dishes - this is how you do great food!! Had an amazing lunch, very cosy atmosphere and excellent staff. Food was utterly amazing, loved everything about it. Thank you to the very charming and pleasant staff, especially Sasha he went above and beyond to make the dining experience superb. Can't fault the place or the service.

We booked for Sunday lunch as we had heard good things. The meat and Yorkshire's did not disappoint. The veg was slightly soft for my liking but the gravy made up for that. We had mousse for dessert and it was incredible. Good range of beers on offer and the service was excellent. The interior itself is beautiful. It’s a great atmosphere whether you’re looking for a place to eat or just nipping in for a pint.

Came here for a meal and the food was delicious. The eating area is quite small so make sure to book! The bar area was very busy but separate from the dining tables so the chatter created a nice atmosphere A pub that hasn't changed in all the years I've been frequenting it. Busy Sunday lunch staff and food lovely. They used to have a small cricket pitch, directly to the side of the pub. This hasn't been used for years. if the land is there, the outside space needs a refocus and purpose. Only a few tatty benches/tables look out onto a field ( freshly cut), which is featureless.

Pub quiz was okay but the quiz host was waffling on a bit too much and really dragged it out!

The food was good and the service friendly, but the true value here is the huge hedged-in field behind the pub. Perfect for small children to run around while mom and dad enjoy a pint.

We visited here today for our Mum’s 70th birthday celebration for lunch, the staff went above and beyond to accommodate and were always attentive . The food was absolutely exceptional and all 14 of us were overly impressed by the quality, we were all saying how lovely the food was! Thank you to Alin, Corina and the team for making our mums birthday so special, great value for money, would highly recommend! Lovely pub in a lovely location.

14 of my family got together today to share a celebration of my birthday.Food was amazing,all different meals and everyone loved everything, Flavours and quality was excellent,Thankyou to Alin Corina and the team, we will be there again soon ,cant wait.

Called without booking at tea time. Most interesting and varied menu. After much deliberation chose Mushroom Tagliatelle and Lamb Kofta both dishes very good. But the star was the Pear and Black Treacle Tart. We shared but regretted not having one each. Would definitely call again.

Good took a bit longer to get to us than expected but it was worth the wait. The food was delicious.

What a nice dinner, I had the home made pie and the wife the steak, all very good, and of course lovely 6 X.. We will back soon..

We had a great meal tonight at the poplars, both had the pie it was served with roasted carrot and parsnip (roasted, not blanched and deep fried) broccoli peas and steak chips. 3 thumbs up for us. 👍👍👍

We’ve just had lunch and the food was amazing. Would recommend the Brixham Fish and Chips, so much fish and light but crispy batter. Homemade burgers were tasty and loved the rosemary chips, truly delicious. Very relaxed and pleasant atmosphere, on a beautiful sunny day.

Me my wife and son went for a evening meal . From the moment we gave poplars a call to book a table to us leaving after having a lovely meal it was first class . A traditional country pub with top class food at a reasonable price . Highly recommend .

We went for lunch, no table booked but were early enough to choose where we wanted to go. We were told what the soup of the day was and the pie. We made our choices and not long before it arrived. The chips were one of the very best we've had and all meals consumed with eagerness. Would definitely recommend this place.

Went there for lunch. Excellent, friendly service. My wife had salmon, and I had pie of the day. It was real pie with a pastry top and bottom, unlike most pub pies that only have a puff pastry top on a dish. This was a real treat and would recomend.

Great atmosphere. Trendy, relaxing and lay back atmosphere. There is a good selection of beers. We have really nice food there. We order the pie, steak & lamp which all the dishes are tasty. The steaks are exquisitely made. The staff were very friendly and very helpful with the menu. They continuously asked whether we are enjoying the meal which made us feel well looked after. I would highly recommend this place. There's also very nice music running in the background And DONT LEAVE WITHOUT TRYING THEIR PUDDING!!!The home made cheesecake with ice cream it was superb.

We came here for a 30th birthday celebration and we were impressed. Firstly the pub is beautiful. The staff were very knowledgeable and kind and their service was excellent. The food was excellent, fresh and very tasty. The slow cooked lamb is superb Muzic was a little loud but it was a busy Saturday and added to the good vibe.It was our second visit and we definitely return and recommend.

It was a great experience visited the place for the first time with wife and we loved the menu . Staff was friendly and food delicious, we will come back to try the new menu.

Meeting up with family for a meal. Atmosphere was okay and nice to see the place busy but the food was average at best and £16.50 for a tough chicken breast with a bit of sauce and a few potatoes is ridiculous. I had the fish and chips, and quite frankly, the fish and chips we had from the local chippy was better quality, much nicer and half the price. Wasn’t too bothered about the cost but was bothered about the quality. Luckily excellent friendly staff made this a pleasant experience.

Very disappointing I have been going to this pub for years, and even since James went I have been twice, but today was awful.The service was unbelievably slow, although there were hardly anybody there,and two young women were in attendance. My son who is a chef had a,steak. He was not asked how he wanted it cooked, and the scrappy salad was terrible I wanted to order an after meal drink No one came near to serve us VERY VERYMUCH DETERIORATED from former visits. I shall not be back.

Stopped by for Sunday lunch on our way back from Frome, we were met by a very pleasant waitress,then didn't have to wait too long for the meal to arrive, and apart from the plates only lukewarm, was a well cooked and wholesome meal,can recommend this place

Not quite what it used to be but worth trying. Food good.

Christmas day lunch needs to be a bit special and when you have reserved a table at £95 a head you cannot help but feel nervous that you have made the right choice. We had no need to worry. Expecting a good quality pub type meal we were surprised to be served a meal more akin to fine dining but not stinting on the quantity of the food unlike many top class restaurants. The meal kicked off with an 'amuse bouche' of roast celeriac veloute on poached apple, roast hazelnuts, chestnuts and crispy rice, served at at the table. Delicious! Starters followed, again beautifully presented on the plate, Duck and pork terrine for me and beetroot and poached apple for my wife. Then a really nice touch. Before the mains, we were presented with a wine glass containing a boule of lychee sorbet and the waiter topped it up with prosecco. Having cleared our pallets the main courses arrived, turkey for me and lamb for my wife, again cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. The meal was rounded off by a good selection of desserts, both traditional and old favourites, We were well satisfied, in fact we had no room for the mince pies and coffee that we were offered. Service charge was automatically put on the bill, but for me that was no problem as I would have happily added it myself. The waiting staff were excellent and helped make the whole experience special. Thank you all at The Poplars.

Had never tried The Poplars before and was not dissapointed. Service was friendly and attentive. The young waiter was definitely keen to check up on us and our food regularly. Food was brilliant, clearly lovingly hand-made by the chef really tasty and well thought-out. The menu was just the right size with the kind of options you want from a country pub. I had the steak and ale pie it was wonderful Thanks guys for your hospitality, will be back!

Best steak I've had for a long time

Went for a Christmas Day meal at The Poplars and we had a fantastic dining experience. From ambiance to the food to the service, it was such a pleasure to dine here. £95 for Christmas Meal. It included the 5 courses plus mice pies and coffee. Each course was delicious in its own way, but the turkey really stood out. It was undoubtedly the best meal I had in a long time. Thank you to the chef, servers, hosts, and all others who made it a Christmas to remember ( we booked already for next year)

Honestly one of the best places I have eaten in a while. You can spend a lot of money and get a mediocre meal these days but this place does not disappoint. Pricing is very good, staff friendly and attentive and the shoulder of lamb was divine I highly recommend.

My cousin and I for many years have met in this pub me travelling from Dorset and my cousin from Glos. We meet up to exchange Christmas presents and have a nice meal together .. In the past we’ve had a lovely Christmas meal and viewed an extensive specials board. We visited yesterday not knowing new owners had taken over and I wasn’t told on the phone booking that Christmas lunch had to be preordered so we were extremely disappointed to settle for fish and chips which arrived on cold plates .. it was busy as expected but the food was disappointing having travelled 90 minutes to get there!

Lovely pub, has been a favourite for many years. I spoke to the landlady recently, really welcoming and friendly. We arrived with our dogs and had a drink and food in the bar area. Can't fault this pub, 5 stars.

This is simply some of the best food we have ever had! We just stumbled across this place on our travels and thought we would give it a go, the staff were really friendly and the food was excellent.

The food was OK, the extras had to be prised out of the staff but what was very poor was the table layout. For a start we were on an L shaped so could not interact fully and on the table for 14 were 3 Christmas crackers. We asked where were the rest and they said only the people chose from the festive menu got crackers!!! This is really parsimonious. Sadly it set the tome for an underwhelming evening meal.

Since my last review in June, the New owners have really sorted the place out. The vast selection of beverages is great and the meals are superb value for money. The Service has improved dramatically and the establishment now deserves a 5 star rating. Definetly on my best Wiltshire Pubs list.
