What a lovely meal and so nice to meet Josh, one of the owners. The meal choice at the Pony is pretty simple, it is around £66pp for an excellent 3 course (plus extras) meal. There are I think, 4 choices of starter, main and desert, with optional cheese course. All of the choices were interesting and used local produce. We were a party of 3, so where able to order most of the options. A standout for me was the crab risotto as a starter and the Pork collar as a main. My Wifes whole Cornish Brill was also excellent. The desert selection did not disapoint and the suet apple cake was delicious. A nice feature of the meal was, choosing different breads and wonderful flavoured butters. The view from the restaurant also deserves a mention, as it is stunning.

We saw a sign on the road to turn into what we thought was a Pub called The Pony and Trap. We were staying in the area, this was Sunday lunch time, however seeing the prices on the Menu outside decided to only have a drink. Strange little Bar just inside. We had 1 pint of non alcoholic Guinness and a half of cider. £10. What a ludicrous price to charge. In every Pub it would have been no more than £7. We watched all the Sunday lunches coming out, they didnt look anything special and at the price, not even silver service, all ready plated up. All the staff seemed to be rushing around. For this price they should have more staff.

Food was excellent, as we expected. However, for us the service was the issue. We felt neglected, even being central and under the very hot heaters, having to chase up all our orders. It’s a real shame as we had high hopes for a quality Sunday roast experience. Also, please change the carpets in the main restaurant from the dirty, stained current ones!

A fantastic evening in the Pony. A true experience rather than just a great meal. From the host to the ambience and food was first class for a little pub in the sticks. I'd dine there weekly if I could afford too!

We went for Sunday dinner and the food was exceptional. They catered to me fantastically as I am gluten-free (coeliac) and a vegetarian. They went off menu and prepared me the vegetable terrine from the à la carte menu and combined it into the Sunday dinner option for me, fantastic. The service from the staff was also spot on from start to finish, nothing was too much trouble. The three of us said that every course was absolutely delicious, and the portion sizes were extremely generous which is not something you always get in such a high-quality restaurant. Will certainly be returning again.

Sunday lunch with family, pre-booked food. Came on basis of reputation of owners. Location and styling all lovely, parking a little challenging when busy. Reception welcoming and table great. Service bit mixed - not quite attentive enough to feel special (had to ask to order drinks when already eating starter, not really clear who our server was). Food quality obviously excellent, only quibbles were veg a bit tired in places, though all hot. Sticky toffee was extraordinarily sweet - overpowered flavour. Helpings large, but as veg help yourself then up to customer to choose amounts, so can’t complain. Overall, enjoyed place and meal. Knew price would be top end and it was, but not sure we would try again for a Sunday.

Went for a Sunday roast and this is hands down one of the best roasts I have ever had. Extremely generous and tasty sides, with excellent starter and desert options. Staff were extremely friendly and efficient and even though it is a tent extension and we were in stormy weather, very comfortable and cosy atmosphere. Cannot find any fault and will definitely be rushing back here

Such a shame as had a thoughtful voucher from friends but this was probably one of the worst meals. We had grumpy poor service and the food was so so bad. My main as was so salty and mushy it was pretty much inedible (hispi cabbage and potato terrine) Such a shame as beautiful location and used to be a good place to eat but I would sbsolutly not recommend especially as the bill was eye wateringly expensive!

Really enjoyed my experience of the taster menu for my Birthday. The taster menu was well paced, friendly staff and lovely dishes. One of the dishes I had I personally found a tad bit too greasy (duck) which was my only reason for 4 over 5 stars however delicious and warm atmosphere. Would come here again!

6 of us had the tasting menu at the Pony last Saturday night (Oct 6th 2024). It was excellent from beginning to end. We highly rated a meal here last year, but this one was even better. The food was delicious, and we loved hearing about its provenance. We had different favourite courses, with 2 votes for the duck pate and brioche, one for the prawn dish, one for the cod dish and two for the venison, but we all loved every course. The service was also excellent - shout out to Caris, Nat and Emma who absolutely made the evening. Their enthusiasm, obvious passion in what they do, knowledge and generally lovely manner made this a superb birthday experience for me, and a memorable family meal for us all. Thank you Pony team.

We booked here for a nice lunch with our young family. We really enjoyed the garden before our food was served and our table was right by the large windows facing the garden. Very nice. We had some nibbles, followed by steaks, and one dessert to share. The bread was really fresh. We found the little cheese amuse bouches very small and expensive at £2.50 each. We really enjoyed the steaks, very well cooked and flavoursome. Our children had a ploughman's plate, there wasn't a kids menu available to us. and our pudding of plum frangipane was quite disappointing. Overall a good main course in a lovely setting but would avoid a dessert next time.

We went here for Sunday lunch and have to confess we are not generally roast lunch lovers, but having heard so much about The Pony we decided to go. We enjoyed an absolutley delicious Sunday lunch which we thought was special, a lovely choice of light and small starters, we had the pork and sage sausage roll and the smoked chalkstream trout, followed by the Sirloin of beef which was perfectly cooked, so tender and succulent. The accompaniements of cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding, roast beetroot, carrot and shallot, savoy cabbage and kale plus a little extra pot of gravy on the side were all delicious too. We couldn’t fault our food and the sticky toffee and apple pudding dessert was amazing. All staff members were welcoming, very friendly polite and helpful and a real credit to The Pony and not something that is easy to achieve these days. The views are fabulous and the gardens very pretty. Oh and a big tick for us was separate male and female toilets rather than the awful unisex which are becoming very common. We will be returning to try the week day lunch menu.

Lovely Sunday lunch today- the food was exquisite. Celeriac soup, lamb ragu for starters, roast beef and pork for the main event. The best beef I have ever eaten for sure with delish vegetables. Lovely rhubarb and apple crumble with custard and ice cream. Super food and lovely service from the young lady who looked after us today and a very warm Welcome as we arrived. The only negative was the surly attitude and rude approach from the manager/main front of house wearing black. He was particularly unfriendly and practically threw the bill at us as he wanted the table back. This attitude didn’t spoil our lunch but not a good advert for a stunning restaurant in a beautiful location. The food is well priced and the quality of meat was just perfect.

I love driving to Bristol during the summer to visit the Pony Chew Valley for their fantastic Sunday lunch, the delicious food is made even better by the lovely views overlooking the valley. Every time we have visited the staff have been friendly and welcoming. They grow their own produce on site in their gardens, which they allow customers to look around. They also have days where they provide lessons so they can learn and grow there own. Because of this you know everything your eating is made from high quality and well looked after produce.

Great 3 course Sunday Lunch for £45. We had a table in the lovely open restaurant area with stunning views. There was a very warm welcome and the service was quick, friendly and attentive. The food was excellent, my daughter said it was the best Sunday Lunch she had at a restaurant. There is normally something that lets it down but not here, generous portions and beautifully cooked. If we lived closer we would definitely be back more often. They do a weekday 3 course lunch for £25 which for the quality we had is a steal. The wine list was interesting and we had a Greek wine that was lovely and paired with the roast really well. Definitely worth the visit.

Four of us came for a birthday celebration. I was expecting to write a five star review because we had been to the Pony & Trap some years ago and had a splendid meal. But not this time. We arrived at 7.30, had a celebratory glass of fizz and placed our orders. We had to ask for the wine list. After our starters had arrived and been eaten, we waited till nearly 9pm for our mains. Three of us asked for the steak fillets, two of which had to be returned because they were sightly undercooked and only warm. That meant a disrupted meal, never a good experience. The fourth meal, a fish dish, was good but, again, was only warm. We were given a 25% discount on the two steak meals and offered free puds, not that we intended ordering any. Perhaps we should have asked for a further discount. This would have been a two-star review, but for the discounts. We would have preferred the expected five-star experience.

With my wife we had booked lunch at The Pony, on a dry but chill Sunday. We were one of the first into the dining room and my first impression was that the space within the restaurant and the view outside it were both stunning. The service as attentive and the overall impression from the staff was of a highly professional and friendly group of people working as a team (not than common an experience in many restaurants). We both had the 3 course Sunday lunch, mine with the beef my wife’s with the vegetarian beef wellington. For starters we tried the beetroot carpaccio (excellent) and smoked trout, while the deserts were the apple crumble and the black treacle tart. Everything was well prepared and served, while the portions were large I ate everything. I will happily return to The Pony and probably bring more friend’s next time.

Came for a Sunday Lunch at the weekend. To start with it took 45 minutes from sitting down to get our drinks. We had to get up and find someone to take our order to start with after 25 minutes. A bottle of wine then arrived but we had to chase again for the beers! This was a bad start so I then wanted the food to blow me away to make up for it. The Lamb Ragu starter was a bit underwhelming - it didn’t have much flavour at all. The roast was good. Really great pork, lovely roast potatoes and good veggies. The gravy could have been thicker and had a bit more flavour but I would say it’s a solid 8/10 roast. The sticky toffee was also very good. What i would say, is that maybe they should give the option of just having 1 or 2 courses rather than the ‘set’ 3 courses. Most people generally wouldn’t choose 3 courses when having a roast, and by having less dishes to serve they could work on their service and give people drinks within 15 minutes of seating. With so many good places to eat in Bristol and charging a high price - service is KEY and they dropped the ball.

The “new” Pony is fabulous. The refurbishment is wonderful, light airy and beautifully presented. The Christmas menu was stunning but without doubt the best thing about the Pony is the staff. Emma, Nathan and Holly treated us to real “old fashioned service”. Light hearted, helpful, informative and friendly without being over bearing. The wine and drinks list was also one of the best we have seen for a very long time. At last a fabulous all round pub/restaurant in the Chew Valley. We saw The Pony on Tom Kerridge and decided to visit whilst on holiday in Somerset. The setting is beautiful. We had a table beside the window which was good because it was a hot day. The trout starter was small and it would have benefited from a small piece of bread however it tasted delicious. Had the beef and the pork for mains and they were both excellent. The vegetables were well cooked, the cabbage was really tasty, the carrots were succulent and the roast potatoes were crispy with fluffy insides. Had cheese and summer fruits for dessert. The cheese was good, especially the ewe’s cheese. I agree with other comments- this place is not cheap however, it’s quality and there are plenty of pub carveries if you are simply looking for quantity. We would definitely come back if we were in the area.

Although the starters and roast beef were very good the pork was dry and was not a rack as advertised. The Yorkshire puddings were also burnt. We waited 25 mins after arrival to be served water and have a drinks order taken. Altogether not the experience we hoped for. Our comments were not well received by the senior waitress who made us uncomfortable about complaining and was too hasty in offering us a discount when that wasn’t our intention. Starters were a little disappointing as my cheese and onion tart at £12 was bland in taste. My wife had scallops at £14.. which were nice but only 2 small ones... should be 3 at minimum.. looked lost in the bowl. Mains were both good, I had Brill and my wife the pork, although not enough sauce with the Brill. As others have said it's now The Pony. The place is a bit weird, a tent with underfloor heating and a great view but somehow the whole space has no soul. Staff were very pleasant and helpful but a bit uninterested. Pork terrine pleasant enough...

Our first visit to this lovely restaurant and it was my husband’s birthday. I hoped I had got it right. I had. We enjoyed an outstanding meal, the best we’d experienced in a long while. My husband chose the pickled pear starter and then the monkfish to follow, both of which which looked fabulous and he loved them. But I think he experienced a spot of food envy when my vegetarian option of a gorgeous roasted beetroot and ewes curd starter followed by roasted celeriac et al arrived. It was a feast for the eyes and quite delicious. What a treat! We didn’t have room for dessert but the menu looked great. The breads and glorious butter were both excellent as was the wine list. We’ll definitely return as we now live fairly close by and it will be a very welcome choice when our friends come to stay with us. And of course we’ll be recommending it unreservedly. Thank you chef and all who served us for a memorable occasion.

So we have been wanting to visit for a while since moving to Bristol this was added to the list of places to try. We have eaten well around Bristol so expected good things due to the Michelin Star. Started with a Gin at the bar then around to our table. The waitress we had was very friendly and attentive. Onto the food, the food was good, tasty meals for both of us but I wouldn’t say it blew me away. I expected more from the menu and the tasting menu which we usually go for didn’t appeal at all. I don’t mind a wait between courses but I feel the wait and service was very slow between all 3 courses. We have been to independents in Bristol that walk all over this place in terms of food and service which I would much prefer to give our money. I feel as if this place is riding on its Michelin and could do a lot better to satisfy paying customers when it isn’t cheap.. Sorry to be a negative nelly but the Michelin should be lived up too. Oh great wine actually great wine and the dessert was sexual.

I had been looking forward to this sunday lunch for a few weeks it was my first Michelin star experience and might just be my last it will definately by my first and last time of visiting the pony and trap.We both ordered sirloin beef and it arrived cold the only thing with a bit of heat was the cauliflower cheese but this too was not nice as it was watery bland and i couldnt eat it. The beef was cooked to perfection however I would habe preferred it in slices rather than served like a steak but thats my preference. Beetroot was not nice and didnt belong on the dinner however the suede mash was the highlight. I love yorkshire puddings but this was dry and the roast potatoes although fluffy in the middle were very hard on the outside my knife mist have been very blunt as i struggled to cut the potatoes and had to tear at the meat. The gravy was thin watery and cold like the rest of the meal. The atmosphere was not welcoming. We didnt bother with dessert as didnt want to waste any more money as £45 for 2 roast dinners was plenty. I dont mind paying this for decent food but this wasnt worth it. Its such a shame as i love the chef who owns this place and regulary visit his other place yurt lush but he must have been on holiday as he surely wouldnt have served this

Marvellous food with paired wines from the tasting menu is a fantastic experience. Both of us loved the menus and wines (and the way the wine changes taste when you have the food of that course), and look forward to coming back.I really like the way the staff explain the menu and the wines without being condescending. I would recommend the tasting menu as a 1st time visit to the restaurant, it is a little more expensive (but totally worth it), this will allow you to sample the style of the place. Then on your next visit (I'm already looking forward to returning) eat from the main menu (that's my plan anyway!)

The food was incredible (had the classic tasting menu) and the service was faultless. Information on food and wine pairings was on point however felt the wine flight was slightly overpriced for what you get. Would highly recommend and definitely return.

It really wasn't the restaurant i have been told about by family and friends. A really busy/frantic environment on arrival with minimal greeting. A bar area with the focus being put onto how many tables can we squeeze into this tiny space instead of giving the customer the Michelin star experience they have become famous for. We were then rushed to our table which was in a nice setting however it was again focused on getting as many tables and chairs in a very small space. (This is all before the main event of the food which followed a similar trend when it comes to quality)Starters came out and i had the game pie, it was a pleasant starter however i expected a bit more from the dish, the slice was very small which was okay however they were parts of the pastry missing which was disappointing and the pastry that was present was slightly on the burnt side. I did enjoy the Pear Puree though. This was very tasty. The pork belly for main wasn't up to standard and in hindsight i should have sent this dish back. I appreciate pork belly is a fatty cut however this serving was 45% meat, 45% fat and 10% crackling. I have eaten far superior pork belly at a country pub for a fraction of the cost. The roast potatoes were poor with thick somewhat chewy skin but were fluffy in the middle. The carrots were the highlight of the dish however when you think they are probably also the cheapest part of the plate it wasn't good. Dessert saved the experience slightly however the event of attending a Michelin star establishment was lost from the experiences preceding this course. The lemon trifle and fresh doughnut was fresh and light and would have been the perfect end to a meal had the starter and main course kept up with it.On the whole for a £100 bill for a couple was extremely overpriced and in all honesty i believe 50% of that bill would have been more fitting of the quality and experience offered at The Pony and Trap.

A superb Sunday lunch as always. Not crazy expensive at £35 for 3 courses. I had the game pie starter which was sublime, followed by the lamb. Delicious 😋

The Jolly Sailor at Saltford has a charming outdoor seating area overlooking the locks, which is its main appeal. However, the pub itself feels run down and in need of investment to improve its condition. On a recent lunchtime visit, I waited nearly fifteen minutes before a member of staff came to serve at the bar, indicating poor service and possible understaffing. Due to these issues, I chose not to eat there and would not recommend it for dining. While the location is lovely, the overall experience was disappointing and suggests the venue needs attention to both maintenance and customer service.

Seems to have lost some of its original magic. We enjoyed a few drinks and really good food previously. Ordered Chateaubriand to share, was tough. Staff seemed stressed over all disappointing from our previous couple of visits. Gave us the impression as gone from great atmosphere, vibrant and relaxed dining to more like a rowdy watering hole. The cocktails weren’t as good as we remembered either sadly.
