I’ve been to this place a few times now, when flying to and from Gatwick Airport. I’ve always been impressed by the staffs politeness and courtesy, going that extra mile. They are very dog friendly with treats at the bar, and water bowls provided. There has been a hansom, well behaved, and affectionate Australian kelpie dog there on a few of my visits. The rooms are reasonably priced have been consistently clean, tidy and comfortable during my stay. I would not hesitate to recommend The Plough Inn to any other traveller or patron.

I can’t do a proper review as I only had the proverbial’swift half’ (honest!), but this is the absolute heart of the village and I would imagine it is heaving especially at weekend lunchtimes as Coldharbour is a Mecca for cyclists, bikers, walkers etc al. My only value comment was I was a little shocked by the price of the beer, £6.35 for a pint of Shere Drop. It is worth noting they have their own microbrewery

The coffee was excellent. So were the mushy peas and the chips. The Plough doesn't seem to be in the habit of battering the cod. Some months ago they did exactly the same: deep fried and no batter. I won't deny The Plough the right not to use batter, and I have the right to give them a wide berth from now on.

I have left it for 12 hours before writing my review so as to try to cool down as I left that pub/restaurant stunned that such a terrible service could be given. 1st we were stuck in a back room and all we could hear was the chaos going on in the kitchen. 2nd One of the members of staff turned the light off in the room we were seated I shouted is this the romantic option he promptly switched the light on again. 3rd there had been a party of families in the neighbouring table in the room on our arrival and they left promptly but the staff never cleaned the debris of food off the floor that the children had dropped yet set the table again expecting customers to be happy to step on food on the floor. 4th it took 45 mins for our food to arrive which I wouldn’t rate as high quality food very average. 5th We didn’t stay to experience a pudding or coffee so went to the bar to pay and the young man who had earlier put us into darkness didn’t even say sorry. 6th We don’t blame the 4 young members of staff we put the blame towards management who obviously haven’t trained the youngsters simple manners and standards that should always expect at an evening out meal.

Nice pub in a nice setting. Visited for lunch. The online booking form was unable to accept bookings on the same day but this doesn't mean the pub restaurant is fully booked. I had a fantastic vegetable wellington which was really well seasoned. The filling contained chunky vegetables rather than meat substitute. The wellington is the vegetarian/vegan option on the sunday menu and I liked that the waiter brought out a yorkshire pudding (on a separate plate) as they weren't sure of my dietary requirements. The adjoining shop sells pasties and sausage rolls so I had hoped they were selling the individual wellingtons/pasties too but no such luck.

I was booked to stay at this establishment by a client, and the experience was a complete nightmare from start to finish. Upon entering the room, I discovered that the bed rattled when I sat on it. Upon inspection, I found that all the screws in the bed frame were loose. After tightening them, the rattling persisted. When I reached behind the bed to further adjust it, my hand encountered a thick layer of dust and unidentified grime. The state of the bedding was equally appalling. One of the pillows was protruding from its supposed "white" pillowcase, but as shown in the attached photo, the pillow was anything but white. It was stained and filthy. I immediately went to the front desk to complain and was offered a different room, which was inspected by what I assume were the managers. During this process, another staff member was called to check the room. This individual reeked of body odor, leaving a foul stench that lingered even after he left. The new room was no better. The showerhead was covered in limescale and rust, the walls were moldy, and there was black mold on the shower hose and tiles. Even the toilet seat was cracked. The bedside lamp was thick with dust, indicating it hadn't been cleaned in ages, a pattern repeated behind the bed. I refused to stay any longer and demanded that my client be refunded, which was eventually done. However, the staff's response to my complaints was infuriatingly dismissive. They claimed they had "checked the room" and that the rooms were "old." Old rooms are no excuse for filth. Basic hygiene is a fundamental requirement that this establishment clearly fails to meet. The lack of cleanliness and the poor personal hygiene of the staff are inexcusable! ** UPDATE ** Threatening to recharge client for the room they refunded if this honest review isn't taken down, Think you'll find that's called blackmail!!

Lovely garden area to enjoy food in, the tables and chairs could do with an upgrade as they were rather tired. We went as a group of 3. Great reviews for the fish & chips. Unfortunately, the other 2 meals were not good. The requests for one meal were ignored. My meal, mussels, was unfortunately the worst mussels I have ever tasted and were totally inedible. I am a seafood lover so this was disappointing. No staff came to check on our table so in the end I had to get up to look for a staff member who seemed too embarrassed to want to know about the issue. She was nice but clearly overworked, we weren’t charged for the meal but I was left hungry.

The staff were very helping. but my fish and chips were very bad, it was all batter and a very bit of fish. The worst I have seen of a log time. Lamb meal was poor and was a odd colour Ham and eggs and chips was nice. Would say the only one meal was good thats four of us. Staff were nice and gave some drinks after we told the chef that he needs to do better Puddings had such small portions it was sad.

We visited this Pub a couple of years ago & was very pleased with our Meals! Called in today (Friday) & found it disappointing! People seated at the Bar is so Dated & annoying especially when the Bar area is very small! One of the Guys seated even had a small child on his lap! Had to order my Drinks with a Guy between me & the Bar! The Meals we ordered were tasty but very small portions & as we were still hungry we ordered Cheesecake (£8.50 a portion) only to be told they didn't have any! Then to top it all the Mens Toilets were out of order! How can a Pub operate with the Toilets closed? However the Staff were very nice & friendly but this Pub is not good enough to recommend or to re-visit!

This is a lovely pub with lovely food and we were welcomed and ordered with a lovely lady (it’s a shame she disappeared), and I would urge people to visit for the food.Only gripe I have is the service is slow, I had to ask for the dessert menu and bill and the pub was not overtly busy with only two young people managing the dining room and bar. If you are ok with slower service then you should really come for dinner as the food was brilliant

We had an early family lunch here last Saturday. We were a bit late for our table but beyond that I can't understand why the service we had was so bad. Although we had booked the bar and it was empty when we arrived we were put outside in the barn (unheated and also empty). The waiter told us every table in the place was booked out. Nobody else arrived the entire time we were there. The bar still had tables when we left. The service in the barn was very poor. We had to go twice to the bar to ask to be served. The food was standard pub burger etc. Only one vegetarian choice. It was £30 per head for a main course and coffee. Definitely would not recommend.

Disappointingly Below Average We visited The Plough Inn On Sunday 3rd March at 1pm with our parents after it being recommended to us with high reviews. We were highly anticipating this meal, especially as it was a special occasion. However, we were very wrong to be excited. We were sat down with are menus at 1 o'clock and about 10 minutes later, we had to chase someone down for the wine list (is this not standard for Sunday lunch?!). We were finally able to order, and ordered 4 Sunday lunches and a side of cauliflower cheese. It is worth mentioning that after we sat and ordered, 2 tables around us sat down and ordered after us. To our surprise, however, they received their food long before ours. When our food finally came, they had nearly finished and we had been sat at our table for 90 minutes. We then had to chase twice for horseradish sauce to be brought to the table, and they kindly provided a teaspoon of horseradish to share between 4. The real disappointment was the cauliflower "cheese" which can only be described as cauliflower boiled in milk and served to us, lukewarm, in a side dish. Unfortunately, we did have to send this back as it was inedible, but strangely, they did not communicate a solution to us. We almost laughed when, after we had finished our lunch and were about to order deserts, a very young waiter put a burnt cauliflower cheese in front of us and said "this is yours apparently, I don't want to get involved." Perhaps I should also mention here that one of our party found a hair in their dinner... In the interest of being fair, I would like to say that the rest of our lunch was very pleasant. The yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and meat were really nice, it is a real shame about the rest, because it does have potential. When the waiters finally got round to taking our desert order, we ordered a crumble, sticky toffee and brownie, hoping that this would salvage our experience. We were ultimately left more disappointed as the brownie was dry and the crumble was just apple sauce with a bit of shortbread crumbled on top (???). The sticky toffee pudding took it to a whole new level as it came with a hair wrapped round the blueberry garnish. I told the waiter who took it back to the kitchen. I assumed that he was going to get me a new desert, but he just came back with the exact same desert. I'm still not sure what was achieved here. I did attempt to eat around the site of the hair, but the lumps of crystallised sugar in the toffee sauce were a bit much for me. I did address our concerns at the time with the on duty manager, Enes, and he did take the cauliflower cheese and all the deserts off the bill. However, not one person in the restaurant ever apologised to us, and they still had the gall to add on the 12.5% service charge!! Not all was lost though, as we left the restaurant laughing when we found out that their WIFI password is 'puboftheyyear'! How funny! I'm not expecting anything to come of this from the pub, but just wanted to inform any prospective customers to manage their expectations.

The Plough certainly has a good chef. Our guests both had a steak and ale pie. They raved about it. Excellent use of pastry, excellent contents. My wife had scampi and chips. There’s not much to say about it. It’s either badly made or well prepared. Hers was fine. I had pork belly. Delicious, with good crackling, good vegetable and mash, and nice gravy. My only observation is that the portions of the pie and the pork belly were overgenerous. My wife and I didn’t have a desert. Our guests had, they said, great apple crumble. It certainly looked delicious. My general reservation is the the portions of mains and desert could easily be a bit more modest. This and the fact that I had asked for a table by the open fire, which we didn’t get (we were next to the open fire place, but there was no fire), made me decide to give The Plough 4 points out of 5. In short, class 5 food, but too generous portions. A pink wine, a Sauvignon Blanc, and a Rioja were delicious, as were the decaf coffees at the end. The price level is very reasonable. I recommend The Plough.

This is the second 5 star rating this year, and the third since 1-1-22. I have to admit that a 1 or 2 star rating happens more frequently. One would expect an establishment like The Plough to proudly serve that increasingly rare Ploughman’s Lunch. There are still a few having it on their menu, generally of poor quality. The chef made one specially for my Bermudan brother in law. The Plough should be ashamed not to put their exceptional Ploughman’s permanently on the menu, and advertise it in big capital letters. It was sooo goood. The ladies had Risotto. This dish disappoints in most restaurants. The Plough’s Risotto was one of those superb rarities. My fish and chips was perhaps not exceptional, but it was certainly delicious. Add the very attentive service. My only conclusion can be 5 out of 5. If the pub doesn’t put Ploughman’s on the card, I’ll be very disappointed. A pub called The Plough should per definition serve a wondrous Ploughman’s.

Mentioned this last year, but clearly they didn’t take notice. Most menus anywhere do not have much choice for vegetarians, so when I choose a cheese and pickle sandwich, I expect cheese and pickle. This sandwich is pickle with a teaspoonful of grated cheese. The pickle completely overwhelms the cheese. Do not recommend on this, or the fact that the waitress got my bread order wrong and practically threw it at me whilst looking the other way. This used to be such a lovely lunch stop.

Okay we didn’t book but was met with a very negative ‘you can stay but we need you out in an hour’ wish we’d just walked out at that point. Front of house waitress was just rude and very blunt. Asked if kids meal included...

Visited for lunch - lovely country pub, good size and varied menu. However, the main problem was the service - yes it was busy but there was no continuity of food delivery - one main meal arrived and then there was a wait of another...

Went here for lunch as it’s a good looking pub. Was surprised at how young the staff were, some of them didn’t look legally old enough to be serving. We sat in the garden and watched numerous people get approached with food they hadn’t ordered,...

Arrived at 18.00 specifically to sample the Ploughman's platter which I had previously much enjoyed there. After waiting to be seated, the server told me chef could not do the Ploughman's after 18.00, so politely asked if an exception could be made in view of...

We visited the Boar's Head Inn at Crowborough today (19/6/24) for a Wake following the funeral of a dear friend. We were absolutely amazed at the wonderful spread that was provided. Both hot and cold food. Well presented and attentive service. Excellent! We have visited for lunch meals on a couple of past occasions and have always been impressed by the variety and quality of the food. Thankyou.

Tried the Hay Waggon, which is under new ownership. Great barbecue with seafood kebabs and amazing local rump steak. Homemade ice creams are to die for. All served up in a wonderful garden

It was quiet for our Xmas do though we may have been the first to have a big group event :) We had the festive menu. The carvery was lovely, however if veg is left on hotplate too long it can be bit hard - not sure if there's another solution to this. Some in the group were not overly enamoured with the Mac 'N' Cheese, felt it was not cheesy enough. The chips were overcooked which came wit the burger. Overall, it was a super evening, lovely venue and welcoming staff.
