Came here for a family birthday meal. Had a cosy private room at the back. Food was great although some options ran out after ordering- enjoyed a baked Camembert for starters & a lovely double burger with skinny chips for main, they also had 0% moretti & low alcohol Harvey’s to drink. Note they had a limited kids menu - chicken or fish goujons but they could do a smaller version of any of the adult meals. Two small carparks but overflow carpark on the Lewes Road side.

We enquired if we should book a table for dinner, she said the restaurant wasn't very booked but if it got busy she'd put by a table for us.

I visited today for lunch with my partner and we sat in the sun at one of our favourite pubs. The steak and wine pie was delicious and the chunky chips were truly fantastic. We did feel , though, having just looked at the menu on line, that the choice of starters and mains was very limited sadly. I wonder whether we were sadly given a “garden” menu? We will try it again when we return to the area. There was once a very personable and efficient young Scotsman running this pub , he was very welcoming.

We wanted a peaceful drink in a character pub. Unfortunately, there was wailing Loudspeaker music OUTSIDE! The beer was good, but there were not a lot of smiles, and looking at the menu, it was plain to see that nearly everything had been bought in, very little made on the premises. Will not go back.

I had high hopes, it looks so appetising from.the outside & the set up inside. We were put in a side room, we ordered our drinks & my friends oj was delivered in a Harvey's pint glass with a straw bobbing about, she only ordered a half, mistakes happen. We then ordered our dishes the lads had steak one was medium to well ( his preference) the starters came & the wine glasses were still on the table, nothing got cleared unless we asked, empty glasses, empty tonic bottle & numerous times staff came in but they didn't do a reccy. The room was occupied by a table of 6 & the noise level made it so hard to hear yourself talk, it is not suitable for that set up/format, it has low ceilings so the sound booms - either leave it as a large seating arrangement or have smaller tables only. The 2 starters came which probably was the highlight for them, they were tasty apparently. Then the steaks arrived, one with a blue cheese & the peppercorn sauce was missing, so asked for it ( this should be checked when exiting the kitchen) we waited & nothing, so asked staff again then waited & nothing. Eventually, had to go to the bar to ask for the sauce, the steaks were £31 a piece & were both gristly apparently & the med/well done was pink, he left half of it. The lobster burger was a tease it was enjoyable until you got to the actual burger bit which was flavourless & mushy - the chips were heavily over salted. The bill came out & it had the service attached, which is not appropriate, this isn't London & your food isn't worth the high prices. Service needs attention, basics really, although the one's attending were polite. BTW we did leave a tip for that reason but not as suggested on bill. We were pleased to leave and get some respite from the noise.

It's a big shame as we used to like coming to this pub and garden in pre covid times and people were always pleasant and food amazing. We also considered staying in one of their cabins as they are quite querky. However, this time I believe they must have a serious staff struggle and have hired a load of 18 year old or younger that constantly have their faces pulled. The service was extremely slow, and whenever we started chasing them up for an extra sauce or extra drink, you could actually hear them sulking. Food was good, however, the rib eyes were too chewy but the sea bream was a delight. All in all a big let down by staff members, it is such a nice place and they need to invest into their workforce.

A below average meal for Mother's Day. We were stuck on a rickety old table next to another large booking which meant there was no room for the other party to pass so I constantly had to move to allow them to pass behind me. They were fully booked due to the day and no other tables were available. The room was cold and the food was average and didn't command the above average prices on the menu. I have been eating at this beautiful pub on and off for the last 20 years. Only once have a sent a dish back, today being that time. I must just echo a previous reviewers comments about the servers reaction. I ordered rib of beef, on mashed potatoes with charred broccoli. The mash was an incredibly limited portion, the meat was too browned to the point of being burned, the broccoli was black and crisp - not charred. I found a large black piece of what looked like a burnt roast potato, that should have been discarded - what that actually was, I don't know, as it held no resemblance to anything that was being served on the plate. The server kindly took it back to the kitchen and offered something else to which I declined. Someone then returned to tell me the chef said the food was supposed to be that way. As a cook myself and someone who enjoys good food frequently, I found it very insulting and told her to let the chef know that I feel he/she is incorrect. Then another server came over to tell me lots of others had enjoyed the same meal so she was confused by my feedback. I think in a food establishment it does well to receive criticism a little better and just take it on the chin. I was happy with the squid and the chicken wings, although I had ordered the wings based on some phenomenal ones I enjoyed months previously - they didn't stand up to the mark. Not sure if a new chef has been employed recently or not. On the whole the pub is gorgeous, the servers polite and hospitable, even if unable to take criticism. I will always return to this place. I believe this to be a one off in my experience. Just to add, I was offered a complimentary dessert to apologise for the issue with the beef dish. I politely declined but it was appreciated all the same. I hope to still be enjoying this place in 20 years to come. Don't let this review put you off or any others. It's necessary to review in this way, so that pressure is applied for changes to be made within your most favourite establishments.

This was the third visit to this lovely East Sussex Pub. The setting could not be better. A cozy and inviting old world pub. On this occasion we went to Sunday lunch (had been there once for lunch and once for dinner before). Half of our group went for a traditional roast dinner. One beef and one "duo of pork"; both portions were on the small side although tasty both left hungry. We also ordered a burger which was really good and a fish cake (served with cod, prawn and salmon). I would not call what I received a fish cake. It was deep fried mashed potatoes with a minuscule amount of fish. The potatoes had been overcooked and picked up too much water and was tasteless; you would not have been able to identify a single piece of fish in this patty. The watercress sauce lacked depth of flavour and overall it was a very disappointing meal. But what was more disappointing was the response of the server when we told her about the dish. She defended the dish and said she had one the other day and it was very good. "I guess it is the luck of the draw" is what she said. I would have expected a different response to my comments. I am not saying I would not go there again; but it is basically a burger kind of place to me.

This was our second visit to this pub as a group and we were a bit disappointed. The pub itself is lovely with a good ambience and we were seated in a very nice alcove, away from noise and chatter. We found the menu offered a rather limited choice, though the food was presented well and on hot plates! However sadly we found it all a bit of a disappointment. As the three stars reflects, it was pretty average fare.

This pub has much going for it,great atmosphere, Harveys beer, and friendly helpful staff BUT, what can we say about the food? Cold, couldn't cut the beef any thinner, plus some was inedible (staff did offer to change, and brought out two thin slices on a cold side plate), Items missing eg parsnips advertised but not on the plate. Two identical plates had very different size portions. Overall portions were small. Didn't represent value for the £20 tag. It felt as though the B team was in charge of the kitchen that day! Our guests were even more incensed than us. Maybe its better on other days of the week, but can't recommend it for the food!

The beer was fine and the front line staff were fine however after being asked “How was your meal?” I said it was the worst Moussaka I had ever had. It was swimming in oil , so much so it was more like a soup with clumps of minced meat and aubergine sliced paper thin. The response from the “chef” through the server was “ I had all the correct ingredients “. Neither the manager nor the chef bothered to show a face and left a very young and embarrassed young girl to say “sorry you did not like it .Can I get you something else?” By which point the rest of my friends had finished their meals so I said no. At this point an offer of coffee or a desert or something would have been a good response. None came. No effort was made to make amends , 5 people will not eat there again. Poorly handled.

Had lunch today for my 60th birthday. Food was good, beautifully presented and well cooked. Quite a long wait between courses even though not that busy. Have always been happy to eat here, but todays visit was spoiled by the vile smell of stale urine coming from the gents toilets into the restaurant. This wasn’t just a waft of ‘recent activity’ as the toilet door opened and closed, but the stench of facilities which had not been properly cleaned for some time. With hindsight we should have asked to be moved but I didn’t want to spoil the occasion by making a fuss.

We attended for lunch, and sat outside due to it being a nice day. We had to order and pay at bar at time of ordering - ordinarily this would be fine, however they added a service charge at that point, before we had received any service, which assumes we would be happy with service. I queried this and the barman rather sulkily stated 'we can remove it if you want'. Service is optional, based on good service, not added before the meal is even cooked. Ironically they would have received a larger tip if we had done so by choice, after the meal. We won't be returning due to the attitude of the barman and the practice of charging service before any has been received...I understand the need to charge for food and drink for those outside before the meal, due to those who think its OK to do a runner, but service should be optional at the end of the meal..

Soya, a high profile allergen runs throughout the menu as a result of them using soya oil. I think as Soya is so highly prevalent, this should be flagged clearly on the website. I could only have the Sea Bass, which they did with boiled...

Ate at the Blackboys Inn this evening. Had Rabbit Ragu and Sausages with mash. Both were overcooked and tasteless. Won't be rushing back here.

Probably need to book during these Covid times. Comprehensive menu. I choose lamb flatbread 3 ways which was a substantial and tasty meal. Very friendly pub manager.

Firstly, I’d like it to be noted that I’m certainly not one to complain, but I felt this place warranted a review based on our experience. I have been a customer at this pub for over 35 years, so know the ins and outs and changes that this very special pub has gone through. After hearing mixed reviews, we decided to try it out for somewhere different in the local area. In a nutshell, the atmosphere was dull. What used to be a cosy, country, authentic & rustic pub, is now sadly a shadow of its former self. The food was very poor for the price they’re asking and we felt like they just wanted to rush us in and out. They’re charging ‘gastro pub’ prices for mediocre food and then have the audacity to charge a compulsory service charge on the bill. We have only ever experienced this at high end restaurants (I.e the ivy in Tunbridge Wells, which btw you don’t mind paying for when the food and service is as good as it is) or eating out in london. The staff were friendly and accommodating even though slightly overbearing but are obviously inexperienced and have had no training, so it isn’t their fault in trying. All in all, a pretentious and very disappointing expensive meal in what could be a truly lovely and destination pub.

We arrive within a few minutes of the kitchen closing for lunch service 2.30pm , rather than turn us away we were encouraged to read the menu and get our order in quickly before taking COVID trace details, our table and getting drinks. Lovely service! Made our choice and went outside for COVID secure service. Lovely sitting in the sun. Drinks arrived and food followed shortly after. Definitely returning. I had mackerel fish cake and Sir, squid. My halloumi burger was delicious as was the katsu burger. We had no room for pudding on the occasion.

Having had to amend our booking a couple of time, we thought the landlady might be fed up with us. She was completely the opposite. Friendly, understanding and absolutely brilliant. We were made so welcome and, despite arriving on their day of rest, they couldn’t do enough for us. We have never experienced anything like this place. Clean, friendly, welcoming, happy people....landlady and her staff were all in a class of their own. Our two dogs were made as welcome as us too. Didn’t get to meet the landlord but he was very busy working in the kitchen. We ate there on the Wednesday evening and I cannot recommend it enough. The mackerel pate was so fresh and perfect, served with rye bread crostini and pickled cucumber. Delicious!! The Camembert Bon Bon’s were exquisite and tasty. The Chicken Ballotine served with Dauphinois Potatoes and fine green beans was also the best we’ve ever tasted. No seasoning required as it was perfect. Honestly folks, if you are looking to stay in Sussex, please give The Blackboys Inn a try. I would like to point out that the pub is named after the men who used to dig the local charcoal out and turn up to the pub covered in soot. This place deserves the reputation it has for superb food and service. BOOKING RECOMMENDED AS THEY GET VERY BUSY. Enjoy!!!!

We arrived without a reservation as we had been house hunting in the area. We were greeted with a lovely welcome and professional service. Food was excellent, the burgers and scotch eggs stood out but the whole family cleared their plates which is always a good sign! Thanks Jay and team, we are now moving to the area and look forward to returning soon!

We have now re-visited this Inn twice since they reopened. The precautions were very good; the service up to the standard which we remembered from our last visit before "lockdown".The menu, although understandably reduced, gave a good choice for all tastes. The standard of cooking was of the highest quality. Relaxed, attentive, and good food! What more could you wish for?

Booked for Sunday lunch 18th October at 3pm. Arrived, shown to table and drinks order taken. Drinks arrive and are given menu and told that specials are on blackboard. This showed Roast Beef, Roast Lamb, Roast Chicken and a Nut Roast. When waitress came to take our order we were told that they had been “slammed” and as a result there wasn’t any roasts left. Why take our order for drinks and tell us that there were no roasts left when they knew that before our ordering drinks. We drank up and left. Disgusted

Friendly masked staff, plenty of hand gel, good social distancing measures and big thanks to Vas for looking after us when we ventured outside to sit under heaters with a hot chocolate. Delicious food in a cosy candle lit room. Lovely touch with the log fire on the go. Would recommend! Hoping to go again to stay in one of their lovely looking rooms.

We came here for a short break and to visit Bluebell Railway. The pub itself is lovely inside and the food was great. Staff were all friendly and helpful. We stayed at the b&b which was also clean and nice inside. Lovely area too. Our only gripe is that on booking.com you're promised a 'super breakfast' to be included in the price, and with the great reviews about it that seemed like a good option. But the pub had only just opened so they weren't serving breakfast. Sadly we only found this out after we'd booked. However, it would have been nice to have had a discounted room price, forewarning before booking, or at least an equivalent 'in room' breakfast. What we had was a basket of sugary muffins, cheap granola bars and yoghurt that was also very sugary. None of which we could really eat for a breakfast.Hopefully the breakfast issue is temporary though and other than that we'd definitely recommend staying at or visiting the pub.

We came here for my parents first ‘outing’ after lockdown. Dad is in a wheelchair and a space was left for him at the table. It was safe and spacious. Our waitress, Emily, was helpful, friendly and efficient. The pizzas were fresh and tasty and the ice cream was amazing! Fantastic!

Yesterday my friend & I visited the Blackboys Inn, as we had done a couple of weeks ago. As before, we were greeted with smiles & a warm welcome. On this occasion it had taken us a little longer to reach the beautiful, historic pub than we had accounted for, as we had journeyed there on our bicycles. On this occasion, we were informed that the kitchen had just finished serving food (2.30pm) we arrived at 2.40pm. I asked if there was any chance that we may have a pizza each if we ordered immediately. The response was kind & generous & we enjoyed the most delicious gluten free pizza I have ever had. I am absolutely blown away by the amazing service I have received when visiting. I have decided to visit again & again. This is my new favourite pub! The staff are all genuinely gracious & provide impeccable, professional but most of all, very friendly service. If, as I do, you must follow a gluten free diet, I cannot recommend the gf pizza highly enough.Thank you to all at the Blackboys Inn!

We had a great family stay over 4 nights, we were the first people to stay here since the lock down and we were made to feel very welcome. The accommodation was very clean and tidy and had everything we needed. We had a continental breakfast brought to our room each day with lots of lovely treats and healthy.Pets are more than welcome and our dog loved it, and plenty of walks near by. The pub has a limited menu due to the inside being closed but the owners are working so hard and they have plenty of seating in 3 areas outside to have drinks and they are doing freshly made pizzas that are great and the beer (shandy for me) are very nice and very cold It was an anniversary on our stay and they made a table up for us with plenty of cover as it was raining and allowed us to bring in a takeaway (can only have so much ). We would not hesitate to stay again and we hopefully be back in the near future.Thank you for making us feel very welcome

I've stopped close to Blackboys Inn many times over the last ten years and fancied a change, am I glad I did! The Inn itself has been here since the fourteenth century so if it's character you're after, this is the place. The accommodation was not what I was expecting at all. The room I was given was split over two floors, a large living room and downstairs bathroom with the bedroom in the sloping roofspace, offering a view over an old orchard. Simply put, one of the best I've stayed in. Dinner and breakfast were very good too, as was the friendliness of the staff. All in all, amazing!

Great olde worlde pub - Food, service and atmosphere are all excellent. We stayed for two nights with our dog (dog friendly establishment) and had an excellent time despite the winter weather.Great location in easy striking distance of lots of great sites to visit - Bodium Castle, Rudyard Kipplings old house, to name a couple. The rooms are superb and yes you get real Egyptian Cotton Sheets, quality bath products and the breakfast alone is worth staying for.Staff and management team are all very friendly, like a chat but most importantly treat you as a valued customer.

I live locally and love this pub so time I said so! Sunday lunch 19/01/20. Courtesy from the moment you walk in and are shown to your table. Two of us, our waitress was Emily, she was welcoming, helpful and gave us exactly the right amount of time to choose from the menu and from there on looked after us with a smile and nothing too much trouble. The food was delicious. Thank you Blackboys Inn, a memorable experience.

I’ve been to this place a few times now, when flying to and from Gatwick Airport. I’ve always been impressed by the staffs politeness and courtesy, going that extra mile. They are very dog friendly with treats at the bar, and water bowls provided. There has been a hansom, well behaved, and affectionate Australian kelpie dog there on a few of my visits. The rooms are reasonably priced have been consistently clean, tidy and comfortable during my stay. I would not hesitate to recommend The Plough Inn to any other traveller or patron.

We visited the Boar's Head Inn at Crowborough today (19/6/24) for a Wake following the funeral of a dear friend. We were absolutely amazed at the wonderful spread that was provided. Both hot and cold food. Well presented and attentive service. Excellent! We have visited for lunch meals on a couple of past occasions and have always been impressed by the variety and quality of the food. Thankyou.

It was quiet for our Xmas do though we may have been the first to have a big group event :) We had the festive menu. The carvery was lovely, however if veg is left on hotplate too long it can be bit hard - not sure if there's another solution to this. Some in the group were not overly enamoured with the Mac 'N' Cheese, felt it was not cheesy enough. The chips were overcooked which came wit the burger. Overall, it was a super evening, lovely venue and welcoming staff.
