I recently dropped a passenger at The Plough on the Hill and had an unfortunate encounter with the owner. My exit was blocked by a car parked in the way, so I used my horn to alert the driver. The owner came out, shouted aggressively, and insisted that, as the owner, he could park wherever he liked and told me to exit via the entrance onto a busy road. I was shocked by his hostile attitude and disregard for safety. I understand it’s private property, but as a customer, I expected a more considerate approach to parking and safety. Unfortunately, this experience left a very negative impression, and I would be hesitant to return or recommend the place.

Beautiful day, lovely walk with friends and dogs. Found an empty table, just the four of us at that time, but was shouted at from the bar that the table was reserved, although the table showed no sign of a reservation. No problem, clearly they were busy, which is great, (love to see a busy pub), so we went to find a table outside, long story short, got shouted at for being in the garden as it meant that someone from the bar would have to collect the empties. Needless to say, I personally returned the empties from 3 rounds to the bar, however, didn’t get a thanks, actually shouldn’t have bothered! This village has just lost a pub, so in my opinion, whether you’re busy or not, there’s no need to be rude……will think twice next time which is a shame.

Really dissatisfied with my recent visit to the plough on the hill. We went there to celebrate my Dads 95th birthday as he wanted his favourite roast lamb dish. Unfortunately on this occasion the lamb fell short of the usual high standards. It was very tough and the broccoli very al dente verging on raw. The give away should of been when our knives were switched out for steaks knives. This experience really did spoil my Dad’s birthday. Won’t be visiting again.

We went out for my uncles 70th, it was a quite but welcoming pub. The staff was lovely and really friendly! The food was perfect too! The fish and chips were cooked perfectly, the batter was firm and crunchy with no sogginess! I had the prawn tacos, fish and chips and raspberry cheese cake, I couldn’t find one fault!

We had never been here before, but after reading reviews we did a last minute booking and trip to the restaurant. All the team working were excellent it was a very well operated establishment with ease and professionalism. The food was very good we had the roasts and will definitely go back for a meal to try something different, all the food we saw being served looked very good. Good prices too. Glad we found it, as decent ‘non chain’ restaurants are hard to find. Thank you for a lovely experience.

It's been a few years since I have been here so we thought we would try it again as the food was excellent. I ordered the minute steak which come with chips, tomatoes and large mushroom, the meal looked delicious, and it was all except the steak, every mouthful was chewy and no matter how tried I gave up. My friends meals were acceptable. The Plough was extremely busy, every table was booked, it may have been a one off bad steak, the manager apologised and refunded the cost. I was just disappointed.

i have been here quite a few times, the food was excellent as always, the service was not up to standard, there was no one in the bar area all the time to ask for drinks they were all out the back chatting and when we had finished our main course we wasn't even asked if we would like anything for dessert before the kitchen has closed which left us dissappointed and shocked at the lack of attentiveness and putting customers first, they wasn't even busy which shocked us too.

We picked this restaurant for a family lunch as it was about half way between our respective homes. We reserved a table two weeks before which was just as well as the place was packed when we arrived. A good sign. It is easy to find just off junction 15 of the M4 motorway, and is a very nice old English looking pub with a large car park. We were greeted very plesantly and rapidly seated at a lovely window table and asked if we wanted drinks. These were brought promptly while we considered a very good menu ( a special gluten free menu was provided for one of us). We had starters of homemade scotch egg with picallili and makerel paté, both delicious. For our main courses we chose penne pasta with prawns, gluten free battered fish and chips and ham,egg and chips with salad, again all very well cooked and presented. We were so full that we could only manage the local Purbeck icecream for desert. All in all a very satisfying meal at a very reasonable price. I can certainly reccommend this pub and will go there again myself. The staff were all very good as was the service and as it was still crowded when we left I can only assume that they are a very popular venue to eat at. I suggest you book so as not to be disappointed. "

Firstly, great location just of the motorway, we met family halfway and was ideal. Sunday roasts all round and I can honestly say that we all thoroughly enjoyed.plenty of veg to go round for all and probably some left over. To be greedy, I’d have like a couple more roasties but other than that, definitely no complaints. I had the roast chicken which was lovely, those that had the beef said it was perfectly cooked. Desserts - Raspberry cheesecake was great and there’s a variety of ice cream flavours too. There was also a bonus brownie as my oldest didn’t finish hers 😊 We’ll definitely be back again!

The food was great, and the atmosphere was nice, but our server was nothing short of surly: it didn’t seem particularly busy, but we experienced very slow service, clipped and borderline rude interactions, requested items (such as mustard) being all but tossed on the table, etc. From the other reviews we’ve seen this may not have been typical, but it was disappointing enough that we definitely won’t be headed back, nor can we recommend it.

Family of 4 & we just went for mains- T bone for myself (cooked to perfection) Risotto for my wife & sausage & mash for the kids. The food, the drinks the service all made it an excellent experience. Too often these days customers can pay for very average food & service- that won’t be your experience if you visit the plough on the hill- I couldn’t fault a thing & look forward to our next visit.

I visited with a friend a few weeks ago and had a wonderful beef roast dinner, after saying to my daughter how good it was she went with her friend and agreed that the roasts were amazing. Today we went as a family and agreed that its the best pub roast we have ever had. Fantastically cooked meat, perfect roast potatoes and the cheesiest cauliflower cheese. Service was quick but not so quick that you felt like they wanted you out ASAP, staff were lovely, they even spoilt the dog with a few treats. They also manage social distancing very well, it’s organised without being oppressive which keeps its cosy atmosphere.Plough on the hill - don’t lose your chef!

Staff were friendly and the rest of the roast was enjoyable enough but I’m actually quite shocked that the person who concocted the veggie lentil loaf thought it was acceptable to serve. Hard, chewy lentils cemented together in some kind of dense brick- totally inedible. My meat eating friend enjoyed her roast. I’ve never written a bad review before but at £14 I think it was a bit of a cheek. The staff were obliging and did bring extra veg and potatoes which was a nice gesture but did mean I paid £14 just to eat potatoes and veg. Veggies and vegans are very mainstream dietary choices these days and deserve to enjoy their Sunday roast as much as any other customer so, as constructive criticism, I’d respectfully ask you experiment with some more palatable options - a mushroom Wellington perhaps.

Came here as we had something booked close by and also as they were dog friendly so we tied it all in with a dog walk .. great potential and nice dog friendly garden in the sunshine. Food though was a let down .. To start we got the camembert to share at £8 .. Was actually half a camembert that was sliced in half that just about filled the very shallow dish it was served in. For mains we had the roast chicken and the special roast lamb .. both were below average .. soggy roast potatoes sat In very watery and flavourless gravy and very little veg. At 17 and 18 pounds each for the mains I was expecting much much more in terms of quantity and quality. All the reviews raving about the roast dinners have clearly not had a decent roast dinner before or have far to much money to worry about wasting a small fortune on a naff dinner and washing it down with a pint of carling for £4.50. We didn't stay around for pudding so can't comment. Overall we weren't impressed at all but the dog would probably return as he got double the amount he would have got had we went somewhere else.

The Plough is one of my favourite pubs in Swindon. I’ve previously been on Sundays for their amazing roast dinners, which never disappoint. Their daily menu has a varied selection of traditional dishes to suit everyone and I always love to see what exciting dishes they have on their special board and my visit last night was no exception. After being torn between several dishes we opted for the 8oz Sirloin Steak and the special 18oz Côte de Boeuf! Both steaks were cooked to perfection and were just delicious. But the locally sourced Côte de Boeuf was in a different league to any steak I’ve tried before and was just superb! The Blue Cheese and Peppercorn sauces were also insanely good! Recently stopped here for lunch with the family, I really like the atmosphere in this place warm, welcoming and friendly, off to a good start when we walked in. The food was good but I'd agree it's slightly overpriced, I had the lamb burger, my other half the ham egg and chips, my eldest a cheeseburger. Well cooked and tasty as good as any decent pub meal I've eaten. Sadly our order was served wrong as (I'd ordered the lamb burger with bacon, my daughter the regular burger with cheese) when they came I was presented with my lamb burger (and told that's what it was) and it had my bacon in as ordered, a few bites in and something wasn't right, they'd got the toppings mixed up and clearly also confused the waitress! My daughter didn't want the lamb burger so she then had to eat my already started burger with the wrong topping. A forgivable mistake (and they did take £4 kids ice-cream off the bill) but a mistake none the less, didn't offer to replace, my daughter politely ate it anyway.£70 for lunch for 4, not the cheapest but wouldn't put me off going again and trying something else another time

Lovely place to wine and dine. I have been here a few times now and so far every time the service has been swift and the quality standards seem high. It’s not cheap but so far I would suggest the price meets the quality. We are dining for valentines so I will review once again after that. I cannot comment on the ales as I only drink red wine and have thus far only sampled the cod on the menu. Again it was steep but I am a firm believer in “you get what you pay for”. I do feel the higher pricing is a result of location and building however we are happy to pay a premium for the experience couple with good food and a great environment.

A very nicely decorated pub with very good attentive service. I had the £20 lamp rump which was excellent!, the wife had the burger that was well seasoned and also came with lovely chips. The only downside was the Arkells beer, it was below standard and flat especially the 3B's, the Golden was better. We will return.

We were here for a birthday celebration so there was a large number of us but the restaurant provided great service during our time here.Drinks and food were delivered quickly and all at the same time and plates were cleared quickly as well.A number of us had the roast pork special which was fantastic. A great big piece of pork, roast potatoes, carrots and a large yorkshire pudding. I thought the portion was large but then they brought out the cauliflour cheese, brocolli, swede and 1 other veg that I cant remember. The food was really tasty and I thoroughly enjoyed.Everybody else felt the same and betweeb them they has fish and chips, ham, egg and chips and other roasts. The kids also enjoyed their main meals which consisted mainly of burgers and fish and chips.Deserts were apple and blueberry crumble, bread pudding and treacle tart which were all served with lovely custard. All delicious and a healthy portion. As I did mot pay the bill, I am not sure what the total bill came to but from the prices on the menu I think it was very well priced.

Have driven past this charming looking pub many a time and often wondered what it was like.Myself and partner decided to check it out one day prior to Christmas in the evening for a bite to eat.The pub itself was very well presented with a nice atmosphere, prices were spot on and the quality of the food was very good. The size of the portions is by far the best we have seen for the money in a long time with both of us unable to finish our main courses. The food itself was cooked exactly as it should have been and very prompt after we had ordered.Would recommend this to anyone

This was an enjoyable evening with my mother and son. The menu was different as it offered a variety of foods that we would not ordinarily have eaten, but it didn't offer enough for vegetarians. The food and service was good, but I felt that it was a little too expensive.

Myself and my friend arrived on Saturday morning for a catch up and breakfast. The service we received when we first arrived was great, greeted by a pleasant chap. Coffees came out straight away. We both ordered scrambled egg on toast. The egg was very soggy but didn't think anything of it. There was so much of it we didn't eat it all. After leaving the pub we were both violently sick for most of the day. I have written an email to the Pub but not received any reply. Definitely won't be re-visiting this pub for food.

Visited The Plough and had lunch as belated Christmas meet up. It was pretty busy but our drink order was taken promptly and our food choices. Starters came in timely fashion and were very nice. We then had to wait for mains but as we were in no hurry it was not a problem. The food was great and we all really enjoyed our meals. Bit of a wait to have tables cleared and then order coffees but it was very busy. Overall a good experience but probably needed more staff on such a busy day.

If there is a better pub anywhere for a family lunch then please let me know. You really have to book here (as we did) 5 adults a child a baby with pushchair and a well behaved dog. We pre informed the pub when we booked and they accommodated us superbly. The food was great, awesome roasts and fish and chips. The Landlord & Lady were there working with them. Parking can be a pain AS IT IS BUSY if it was not great parking would be easy. Thank you team....

My first visit to the Plough. I could not fault the food or service. One thing I really did not like was the really scary experience of getting back onto the road in the driving rain, the pub sign was located in a most inconvenient spot blocking the view of the oncoming traffic.

We booked a Sunday lunch at the plough on the hill due to the reviews on this site and because of its close proximity to the m4 as some of our party were travelling from different parts of the country. What an excellent find. We had a three course meal. All of us had the excellent soup of the day, two of us had beef and two had turkey, both excellent and we had a variety of desserts which were all delicious. We would have liked a few more desserts to chose from but that is being very picky. The staff were very friendly and service was excellent. Highly recommended

We booked as a group to celebrate Mum's birthday and had a lovely time. The staff are super friendly with great service. The food was good: I had a delicious bean casserole, my son said the burger was the best, and the portions are generous. Puds were delicious too.

En route from the South coast to the North West we stopped on spec for a late lunch with a baby in need of feeding. Although fully booked, they found us a table for a quick lunch. A lovely pub with pleasant and efficient service. Happily provided hot water to warm baby's lunch. Food was delicious and a very generous portion size. Highly recommended. Next time we'll book in advance to be sure of a table.

We held a funeral wake at the White Hart, Wroughton this week and were very pleased with the support, service and catering we received from Manager and all staff. The spacious facilities gave us plenty of room to spread out as needed.. Everybody was very friendly and helpful, the food was excellent and good value, and the location was good for everybody - travelling from multiple directions - with the pub being in easy driving distance from M4 junction 16. Thank you to all. Highly recommended.

I have to eat here due to work paying! My first night was terrible staff where lazy and couldn't be bothered, durty plats and glasses everywhere. 2nd night was a bit better, change of staff but still not good. Well breakfast was rubbish chef didn't put anything out till 7.20am even they say 7am! Plus then had to wait 15 minutes for eggs. The breakfast chef needs to find a another job!

Ordered a ham and cheese baguette, buttered. The two small pieces of fatty ham measuring 2"square each were of such poor fatty quality that I had to throw themaway. How can you charge for such tiny pieces of crap quality ham. Shame on you. Also, only one half of one half was buttered. Will never set foot in that place again
