The Plough Inn in Taunton Deane

Long train journey to Taunton today. Thought I'd pop in for a pint. Wanting a real ale I was given a cask ale. Absolutely perfect. From a local brewery too. Barman was happy to chat and answer questions about the pub etc. Will be back next Sunday.

Used to be an amazing pub. Unfortunately the new owners don't think it's important to stock many drinks or do much cleaning. Just another pub headed for closure now. Shame

Can't comment on food as we only had drinks but the service was great and a decent choice of beer and ciders.

A big shoutout to the young serving on her own today 7/7/24 . She is working by herself on Somerset cricket day and doing an amazing job- she deserved a bonus for today as the pub is absolutely packed !!!

Lovely staff and wonderful life music. We sat int he beer garden and it and had a great time.

When I am in Taunton I always make time to call in to The Plough, usually before catching the train home as the station is nearby. The standard and variety of cider from the box on offer is excellent. Yesterday I had time to try three ciders, all distinctively different, and all excellent, two of them were new to me which was a bonus. The staff member who served me was very knowledgeable about the local ciders on offer, and helpful too.

As Taunton pubs go, this is as lovely as it gets. Proper old pub, cider and lovely people. Job done 👍🏼

Very nice. Ploughman's was very fresh and tasted great. Phoned to book in advance and they were accommodating to my preferences. Nice atmosphere and decor. Young lady serving was lovely. Definitely recommended

Came here on 13.01.24 as an away fan (Dover) and we all liked this pub. Great drinks choices, wide variety.

Delicious Sunday dinner. All 4 of us really enjoyed the food. The service was very good and a good selection of beer and cider. They are also dog friendly so there were treats and a bowl of water for my granddog.

Great service. Amazing food the pies are the best. I usually go with my club. Too bad it's closed on Monday though...

Absolutely fantastic bar with a great atmosphere. The staff and locals are very friendly fantastic to chat and have a drink with. They have a great range of local cider and the home made pork scratching are a must. The Sunday Roast looked and smelt fantastic unfortunately I never got to taste it. Happy hour is from 4pm to 7pm but its very cheap out with this times. If in Taunton it's a must visit for a great traditional pub.

We were in Taunton for a couple of days and dropped in here both nights. Great pub, friendly staff with a great atmosphere and choice of beers and cider. Will definitely visit again when in Taunton

This was a fantastic pub for drinking, with many ciders on tap as expected in Somerset! The design is beautiful from the vintage features and Taunton frames on wall, counter is well-presented also. Staff were friendly and entering is done through a vintage door too, having both upstairs and downstairs in contrast! I enjoyed a Raspberry and Blackcurrant cider as well as traditional Apple cider, sitting comfortably upstairs.

Only stopped in for a drink before heading to a restaurant for dinner. A quirky pub which has a long thin bar area with sofas at one end and another seating area towards the back. Not tried the food so cannot comment.

Nice, vibey little pub. Attended last weekend for a music event run by friends, had a great night, no issues. However that was my first visit so can't say what it's like when it's in 'normal' pub mode but I'm sure it's fine! Decent range of beers, I mostly stuck to the Quantock 'QPA' session IPA on keg, which was very tasty. I worked my way through a fairly respectable number of pints and felt fine the next day, what more does one need!

Looks lovely from the outside, as it does online but inside…! Smells damp, freezing cold, dirty toilets, no real cask ales as advertised, a barman who sounded ill sniffling snot all the time I was there. Utterly depressing and awful visit. Avoid!

Love this place. Pies are always superb - last night we had butternut squash and spinach pies - FAB!! The service was great - what can I say about the lovely barman Max? - wonderful! Charming, helpful and just delightful 😊

Fantastic Sunday roast. Really good quality Beef, friendly service, and very reasonable price. Miles better roast than some of the bigger chains in the area.

Nice atmosphere, but they didn't give me a receipt, so I realised after checking my bank a few days later they charged me £30 for a glass of coke. I called them up and they said I should have told them on the day, and there's now nothing they can do

Interesting and very independent pub. Huge selection of local ciders and a weird and wonderful set of characterful customers who were ever ready to have a chat. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area, and maybe even if you have an hour to wait at the railway station as it's only 3-5 mins walk from the place.

Only one real ale on straight out the barrel on the bar. Long narrow pub with plenty of cider on offer. Food nice and filling, fast service.

Popped in for a drink before a gig. Awesome looking bar area, great choice of ciders which all look very appealing. Staff were very friendly, will visit again. Great music playing.

Cant say i was impressed went on reviews. Staying at great western and this was close. Had sunday lunch should have complained really. Roast beef £15:95 not cheap good amount of beef and veg ok but the rest not good overcooked yorkshire, parsnip and potatoes not cooked well. Still all white not nice and roasted. Sent gravy back like water. We wont be going again im afraid not sure how its got 4 stars. Ale house across road cheaper but didnt see food. Crossed the river to rings of bells far better £2:00 more next time I would have say avoid it

Sorry to say was not impressed with sunday lunch today at all. Went on good reviews must have been an off day. Beef and veg nice the rest not cooked properly. Watery gravy too. Shame really cute pub nice pint but wont eat there again. A table of 4 came in after us and asked us how the food was tried hard to be tactful but we didnt enjoy it. Sorry manager I dont like leaving bad reviews didnt like making a fuss in pub

First of all- When I was looking at places to visit in Taunton I saw the Image of the two people smiling on ladders by the sign and I immediately wanted to go there. I was NOT disappointed. The bar tender was very nice, the manager was a gem. I would go back just to visit again. We went to other bars/pubs but this was the best one. They are welcoming and we never once felt out of place. A must visit. Thank you Sara(h) for being so awesome.

Been too taunton races and called in for a drink before getting our train back. Was given a warm welcome and will definitely go back again, thankyou

Although a bit cramped, it's a proper pub. Sometimes they have great music acts on.

All ways a good selection of beers and ciders. Great atmosphere and lovely staff. Keep it up!

Good place for a pre and post match pint.

While waiting for a train I had time for a quick pint here. The service was friendly and helpful - there is a large selection of real cider in the box to choose from. The pint of Sandford Orchards cider was very nice. I have called in here on and off for quite a number of years now, I like to try different ciders when I get the chance, and I think the quality has certainly improved in the last couple of years.

One of the best pubs in Taunton! So much character, great beer and friendly staff.

Enjoyed the visit, with the only downside being charge £30 for my last drink. Probably my fault for being a tad tidily. Unfortunate truth though is they have a thief on their staff so check the amount before taping your debit card.

Great fun and massive choice of cider

This review is very easy. My pal and I just ate the best Sunday roast we've had in Taunton and for miles around. I had succulent roast beef, rare and perfectly cooked. He had roast pork, and both meats were hand carved from joints. The roast spuds were equally perfectly cooked, crisp on the outside and accompanied by a Yorkshire pud that tasted just how it should - fresh! Three veg and great gravy completed the feast. Brilliant. Thank you, chef. "I'll be back."

Went in for some lunch had the ploughman's for two was fantastic and the service from the staff was brilliant will definitely be back and will recommend to anyone 🙂

I love this pub normally and make the effort to travel long distance from London to stay in Taunton specially for this pub as a mid point to the south west, but completely baffled tonight when arriving at 2330 with a 2am closure that we were not allowed to enter as they had shut early on a Friday night. Very disappointing, usually an enjoyable place and wasn't worth staying in Taunton tonight seeing as I didn't get to visit this place ☹️

It's still my favourite pub in Taunton; despite changing hands a number of times over the last decade, it still retains its down-to-earth charm, by continuing to sell a good selection of cask ales and local ciders, at realistic and reasonable prices.

Been in here a few times over the years when I get chance, great pub. Just seems to keep getting better aswell! Friendly bar staff. Walking distance from the train station, great location if you're returning from a shopping trip. Always seems to be busy which is a bonus! Great little out of the way town pub

You wanna have a relaxed chilled time with cool people all the way around then this is the place for you. Kris and Anna the bartenders can't be beat in the World Class customer service category, any type of drink and just plain being nice. Chris the Manager is the perfect Business Manager making sure it all runs smoothly.

Friendly pub but that might have been the happy hour/hours. Would frequent again for sure. Good beer, next time I will try the food.

Pub half empty went to order a roast dinner and was told fully booked ..what a waste of my time

Cosy pub near the town centre. Small bar serves a good range of beers and real ales. Ultra low 'zero' alcohol beer too. No car park.

Found this little gem on a Google search and went with the previous reviews, as we were visiting the area and didn't know what was good. We needed something dog friendly too. What a great find, totally not what I expected when I walked in, the place is like a tardis, lots of cosy little rooms to sit. Great choice of lagers, ales and ciders. The bar lady was so helpful and gave us samples of their lagers on tap to see which one we liked. We lucked in that we arrived on curry night! £10 per person for a curry and a pint. The new chef, Chris has a wealth of cuisine knowledge and did a Caribbean mutton curry with coconut rice. It was amazing! We had our teenage son with us and Chris even brought out a taster of the curry for him to try to see if he liked it. He was so chatty and came over to the table a few times to say hi. This place obviously has a good reputation already, but with Chris leading the way, it's only going to get better! Don't believe me? Try it yourself.

Finally tried their Sunday roast. Good food and still good cider.

Superb food the carvery is superb beef melted in the mouth superb portion size as well great staff Chris the chef very friendly as is Ana very warm welcoming place that accepts dogs too.. great selection of lagers ciders and ales will definitely be back many times.

The Plough was recommended to me, by a friend who lives locally, for the selection of local ciders. Bar-lady kindly offered a few tasters before I settled on a pint of Harry's Scrummage Medium at just £4, which seemed very good value coming from London. Head went pleasingly wobbly after just the one pint. 😁

Wir hatten hier das beste Englische Essen, dass wir jemals in Großbritannien hatten. Der Koch leistet eine exzellente Arbeit, das Huhn mit Beilagen war köstlich und auch der Kuchen zum Nachtisch war ein kulinarischer Traum. Wir kommen gerne wieder und können dieses Lokal von Herzen empfehlen. We had the best English meal here that we have ever had in the UK. The chef does an excellent job, the chicken with side dishes was delicious and the cake for dessert was a culinary dream. We would love to come back and can heartily recommend this place.

Best beer, and dog friendly. Lots of separate rooms, good food and music. If you like quizzes, this is one of the best. Now under new management but very much the same. Has it changed? It always changes: no two nights are the same ;-)

Excellent pub,staff amazing,especially the manageress,she never stops and soo welcoming!recommend the undersell lager and if u like cider,its an aladdins cave of the Appley stuff!food is out of rhis,it's actually homemade onsite,not a frozen box in sight!needs wider wine choice though!really quaint pub!Will be back!dog friendly too!

Been to the plough for a really good roast! Head chef Paul was kind enough to make one for my dog as well.

Had a faultless Sunday lunch today best I've had in a long time and even our canine companions were well catered for with their very own Doggy Roast! ( I kid you not, a roast dinner in a dog bowl !) There was vast selection of ciders and plenty of of other beverages to choose from the bar All the staff were very friendly and it was lovely to see the hard working chef ( Paul) take time out to talk to the customers and ask if we were enjoying their meal Will definitely be back

Popped in to fill some time, ended up having the Sunday roast. Very good food - portion size & price both good, all cooked to perfection. (Roast spuds were perfect, honey roast parsnips probably the best I've tasted.) Friendly staff (you know they enjoy being there when they're skipping and singing whilst they work.)

Honestly best Sunday roast ive had in taunton, lamb was amazing, great selection of beers and ciders, Lilleys cider aswell, what more can you want, sticky toffee pudding was outstanding. Well worth the money and the visit, highly recommended

First time visiting for a Sunday roast. From the moment we were greeted with smiles to the table service and home cooked food, everything was superb! My husband had a gorgeous pint of mango cider which he was kindly offers a sample of first and we both chose the roast beef dinner. The presentation, portion and flavour were on point and the homemade yorkies…I’ll be dreaming of those. We will definitely be back again. In 8 years of living in Taunton we can’t believe we never ventured into this little gem right in the middle of town before.

Very hard to get servered. Was mot busy, but the staff where else where. My visit again and see if its different.

What a great local old pub. As in they have a wonderful selection of local somerset ciders. This is the best in town for selection. Tried a few spots but this one had all the ciders we couldn't make it to, like taunton cider, or tricky.

Was waiting for a train in Taunton, had 90 minutes to find somewhere to eat I found the Plough Inn - pleased I did. The first Sunday of the month is vegetarian/vegan roast lunch day. I was happy to find anywhere serving at 3.00pm. The Plough was cozy and inviting, great selection of ciders, I had an excellent pint of Quantock Ale from the barrel. The veggie roast was delicious, the nut loaf tasty, great selection of vegetables which were very well prepared. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Staff were helpful and chatty. A very pleasant time in a lovely traditional pub.

Not accessible Unfriendly and disinterested and treated like an inconvenience As a tired solo traveller with 1.5 hours to kill and a need for some good food and cider it was incredibly disappointing

Couple of excellent real ales in barrels and an array of ciders. Usual options for other drinkers. Food available. Really friendly and helpful staff. Should be your first port of call if arriving at the railway station.
