A group of friends and I go to “The Jolly Tanners” every other Tuesday evening. I nearly always have steak pie chips & peas. The pie is a portion of a large one cooked on the premises, not a small one bought in. It’s always good. The friendly atmosphere is enhanced by the landlord allowing us to view our photographs on the pub’s large screen tv.

A couple of months ago our group of friends had our lunch here and we were so impressed we decided to have our Xmas Lunch there too. We certainly made the right decision for, on arrival, our table was beautifully laid out in keeping with the seasonal occasion. We all chose selections from the varied Xmas menu and when all three courses were served they were very well cooked and tasty. Our hosts Barry and his wife provided excellent service, which made our visit most enjoyable. We'll definitely be back!

We had received some good news and needed a venue to treat the six of us. Other favourite haunts were unable to accommodate us at the time we requested so we looked elsewhere. Someone suggested The Plough and it was somewhere we had not been to before. We called and after a bit of juggling their end they could fit us in. Result. OK, if you don't know where it is then it is not the easiest to find but google maps helped. There is a car park and again, on a dark, wet night it isn't that easy but it is plenty big enough when you get there. Our table was perhaps a little near the door and there was a steady stream of traffic going in and out, the welcome was fairly warm and, to be fair, they were very busy. We settled at our table and had to order food and drinks from the bar which is no problem. I had to wait in the queue and again no problem. So is this a positive review or not. Well IF you don't mind the above then it is a good review. This isn't fine dining in that sense BUT the drink (and I like my beer) was good with plenty of choice, The food is what I call pub grub, some look down their noses but this is what I like. Liver and bacon was a special on the board, if you like liver....... They had sold out of burgers which would have been a problem if not for good old ham egg and chips etc also on offer. Desserts on the menu were Treacle Pudding, Spotted Dick and so much more! You might be getting the picture? When I came to pay it was all very reasonable and without a 10% or 12.5% service charge slapped on top! When I gave a tip there was a surprised look, clearly not expected, but well deserved. So, we weren't in the best seats, the food had started to run out in the popular lines and it was a bit "rough and ready". Make no mistake the reason they ran out of things was they only had a limited amount of truly home made dishes. I will be going back and if you like a traditional pub you will not be disappointed. My hope is that you won't be overly impressed with this review which will let me book in without too much competition!! Maybe see you there?

We visited with friends for the first time as it's within walking distance for us. Was a bit disappointed to not find a menu on line before we went but our disappointment soon disappeared when we arrived and got the measure of the local village pub - good old fashioned pub food with a blackboard full of specials! No starters listed but in reality the portion sizes of the main meals are so large that you really don't need a starter - so much so that I didn't have room for pud! Excellent fresh home cooked food, warm & friendly service & very good value for money. We will definitely be returning.

Met friends here for lunch, having booked ahead. Really pleased to be given a round table, made conversation so much easier. We all ordered from the Specials board. The steak and kidney pie was a proper wedge cut from a pie, with superb shortcrust pastry and succulent filling. The liver and bacon was very tasty and well cooked. All came with three varieties of fresh vegetables, plus baby potatoes. After our meal, one of the staff came out from the kitchen to enquire whether the potatoes were all right, as some of us hadn't eaten all of them - we explained it was a problem of capacity, not cooking! We sat and talked for ages afterwards, with no pressure to move - and the overall bill was extremely reasonable. A super experience, just wish we lived nearer.

The Plough is almost hidden away on the outskirts of the busy town of Crawley. It is in an idyllic ancient village location with the Parish Church and other old dwellings including a mediaeval tithe barn, now an Arts centre and theatre. The pub is expertly run by John, Flo and their team. It has wheelchair access and toilet. All the food on the extensive menu is cooked to order and presented and served with friendly care and attantion. Prices are reasonable and specials are imaginative and soon sold out. Nothing is too much trouble for the team, whether it`s a lunch, dinner, wedding feast, a wake or various groups socialising with a drink and a meal. We were delayed in Dublin due to fog despite having allowed for several hours of slack in the schedule, we missed it. The best luck of our trip was to follow the recommendation of the gate agent and stay at a B&B in Ifield. We had a delightful time walking and touring the village.. highlights were St Margaret's Anglican Church and the Plough Inn. We were famished upon arrival, and a friendly waitress seated us immediately indoors. It was during a very hot spell in the summer of 2003, which turned out to be one of the warmest on record.. We chose to eat at The Plough as an alternative to eating at the Ifield Court Hotel where we were staying (15 min walk) - it was well worth the effort - but book if you choose to do this as they get busy (Sat evening). It is in a pretty conservation area, well worth a stroll round the nearby churchyard, with nice outdoor seating. We received a very friendly welcome from the younger lady barmaid and she helped find us a table to reserve for dinner. Unfortunately the rest of the staff, all of whom arrived later, were less welcoming and we got the feeling that this is a primarily a locals' pub - I didn't even get eye contact when paying the bill (hence no tip). However if you can weather the cool reception (or at least be here when the lovely friendly lady is around) then it's well worth the trip. The food is standard pub grub but very well cooked and presented ( fab eggs and ham!) and the house wine good and reasonably price. As we strolled back to the hotel we were were buzzed by local bats at dusk and serenaded by barn owls - they made us feel more welcome and ended a very satisfying evening.

We had an enjoyable 4.5 mile circular walk over local footpaths, then sat down to a tasty lunch in this warm friendly pub. There were ten of us and the service was excellent even though the pub was busy with other groups having Christmas lunches.

I was told by a friend not to go & eat at the the Plough as the food he had last time was horrible, but that was a year ago so as we live close we went, I wish now I had listened to my friend nowThe Chicken I had was so over cooked & my wife had a dirty plate, when we did mention about the the plate, the land lady which we found out after it was the land lady by one of the locals came flying from the kitchen & in a rude voice said you can't please everybody can you , then snatch the plate away , So I didn't mention about the chicken being over cooked just in case she blew a gasket, I would never go back & wouldn't recommend to any body

I have been visiting the plough for 7 years on a regular basis. Usually its just my husband and I but if we ever want to meet friends or family for a meal and drink we always suggest they join us at The Plough. This is because we know that the food will always be lovely, hot and tasty and the staff will always be friendly and attentive. Everyone we have taken there has always remarked on what a friendly pub it is and how great the food is. It has such a lovely friendly atmosphere that i comment every time we go that we could be in our own living room, its so relaxed. There is plenty of choice on the menu of traditional pub food, there is always a special board with a variety of new dishes to enjoy, yes sometimes the specials get sold out before you get to order but that is because the pub has lots of happy customers to serve. They serve a great sunday roast.John and Flo are lovely and go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need, and that the food is up to scratch. Portions are large and if you leave any which is always because you are filled to the brim, Flo will always ask if everything was ok with the meal, everything is always great with the meal but i know if it wasn't they would sort it out. having said that there are lighter bites on the menu but i'm always too greedy to order one of those. One person who commented on here said they spoke to the manager who was drinking in the public bar, i have never seen him do that or be rude to anyone so you must have got the wrong man. The bar staff Xav, Viki, Dave, Faith etc are always happy and friendly and helpful and work very hard as the pub is frequently very busy.Hubby loves the bears there and every few months they have a new beer to try.Try it and i know you wont be disappointed.

I came here for lunch and had a really good meal. Looking at some of the other reviews I am wondering if we are talking about the same place. The Plough is next to St Margaret's Church and is a small 'village' pub. My friend had been here before and recommended it .We were not disappointed. We had a very pleasant lunch in a lovely atmosphere. The landlady was friendly and welcoming, the food good and the whole experience well worth repeating. We will definitely go here again and will recommend it to friends.

We visited this pub with friends but was disappointed with the food. As a vegetarian I was looking forward to the cauliflower cheese bake but told that this was already off the menu at 8pm. Hence had the vegetarian stir fry which was very bland and also the chicken stir fry that was also ordered was very dry and bland as well. However the deserts we ordered stickey toffee pudding, spotted dick and chocolate fudge was excellent. The waitress was very grump and appeared very rude and at one stage suggested we should have have ordered two puddings instead when we mentioned how much we enjoyed the desert. Her mannerism was unpleasant and made me feel slightly uncomfortable...... It's a shame as we won't be going back..

My husband booked a meal for my birthday. When we arrived we found they had put a banner up to say Happy Birthday which I thought was a very nice gesture.we ordered our food and waited a little while for it to be cooked.I had ordered a chicken and leek pie which came out with FRESH veg and new potatoes, the pie had huge chunks of meat and excellent pastry. My husband had a burer which was enormous but very tasty. The service was friendly and the cost of the meals was very good. We have travelled all over the world and had meals in 5 star hotels but value for money and quality you would be hard pressed to find anywhere better than the Plough Ifield.

I have been reading some rather critical reviews posted on here. Are you sure you are actually talking about the Plough inn, Ifield as there are other establishments around also called 'The Plough'. I have never seen John, the Landlord, drinking and swearing in the public bar. John and his wife Flo are wonderful hosts, always made feel welcome by all of their staff.

Visited today for lunch with my daughter. When you hear the person in the kitchen say 'I've told him he can have a sandwich but I'm not doing chips' you realise that asking for a sandwich at 2.15 is too much hassle. To follow you get someone looking at their watch whist you are trying finish a drink you realise you should have gone somewhere else. Not going back...

Lovely location, great looking pub, a great shame about the micro waved over heated food, and the smell of cigarette smoke wafting in through the doors was off putting as was the offensive language which echoed though out, followed by a ssshhh from somebody, we have recently moved to crawley and was told to pop in and try it, I really would not bother. Our food was pretty much dropped in front of us and not worth the wait or money. Shame looks good

Unlike the Macvie's experience I would like to say that my family and I have used the Plough for 20 years, I have seen 3 changes of Landlords, all have been good, but I have to say that John is one of the kindest men With a quick wit and gentle humour, His wife showed much kindness to my mother who had dementia, and we would visit the pub with her, Flo always took time to come out of the kitchen and make a fuss of her. I have never had a bad meal from there. I have never seen John talk to his customers rudely and as for him being in the public bar he probably was, collecting glasses, as he does not expect his staff to do any job he would not do himself.I never hesitate to take friend to the Plough it has a great mix of young and old, If there is ever a delay with the food your are warned when you place your order, the fact that the pub is always busy is testament to the good quality of food, and service.

My friends and I tried this quaint little pub in Ifield and have promised to return. The liver and bacon was fabulous as was the pasta. The people at the table next to us were having sausage and mash and it looked really nice. The service was prompt and the staff engaged in a constant stream of friendly banter with the customers, which made us feel very welcome. The barman (or possibly landlord) was very knowledgeable about the ales and we enjoyed sampling a few of them.Overall, a very enjoyable experience.

Went to this pub to eat with my family & three friends ,We sat down & waited ages for our food ,My steak & salad turns up with a large grey hair in the salad,My wife's food turned up cold , I asked to see the landlord of the premises ,the waitress told me if you want to see him he is in the public bar so I was so angry with the response of the staff I thought I would go & find him. When I finely found the landlord he was standing at the bar drinking & swearing at the top of his voice .I introduced myself as one of his customers that has just had a meal in his pub ,Mentioned the hair & the cold food & his reply was . (There is other pubs my family could eat in & laughed. Never again. DO NOT EVER GO & WAIST YOUR MONEY IN THIS PUB

The Plough is well known to me for being a good sanctuary from the hussle and bustle of Crawley town mania, and a good meeting point for family to converge on. The building and small Hamlet dates back centuries so you could be anywhere in the Country, yet only 1mile from the New Town. The meals are above standard but typical Pub food simple well presented wholesome and adeqate for most appertites, wine is a well chosen choice and range to compliment this, but dont expect to much of the vintage. Beer is excellently served and provides good local real ales easily consumed beyond legal limit, so a Taxi is well advised but good parking facilities are available behind the Plough next to the Barn Theartre. Overall in my experience having eaten and drunk here you will be welcomed with good food, service, and well presented wines and beer, book 2 to 3 days in advance, as success in its popularity means parties of 4 or more will need advance prepartion to ensure an abundance of Steak or special meals are available to order. I most surely will visit again hopefully for many years, as I have relocated to the South Coast. Check their website for opening times and menu, and call for advice and availability. Enjoy your meal.

Local pub sitting in the old village of Ifield now part of Crawley has assortment of beers including real ales, decent wines, traditional pub food and a atmosphere where a conversation can be held without shouting to make yourself heard. Unfortunately there is no garden for use in summer, picnic tables are located in front, giving a pleasant outlook, onto a traffic free area. These sort of places are becoming a endangered species, will be a tragedy the day there gone. The food menu has a traditional english flavour to it, with meat pies, liver and onions, steaks, etc, out numbering the Lasagne's and quiches. There all of a very acceptable quality and I believe made on premises. Strangers may get the impression it's clique, because it's a neighbourhood favourite, don't let that put you off visiting.
