First time in Whitby and the Plough Inn and it’s the last. We had not read the beermat to say no mobiles when my friend answered a call and barmaid came over loudly and rather rudely giving us the riot act on no phones read the beer may not something I normally do. If she had come over and said politely being professional instead of shouting and then repeating if he walked in I get the sack guess that he is the owner. Put poster up on door etc saying no phones we left and wouldn’t recommend to friends.

After a long drive to get to Whitby we were looking for a quiet pub for a few wind-down beers and the karaoke at 4pm in the Whitby Way did not appeal - although with it being the height of the holiday season and a glorious week-end the town was heaving. We wandered down Baxtergate and came across this unpretentious watering hole and ventured inside. We had no knowledge of the mobile/laptop policy and my good lady was suitably chastised for just looking at hers. There were 3 other individuals in the bar who were sat apart and were presumably all born dumb. The ladies behind the bar could pull a pint (of Sam Smith's, a rather pleasant brew I've not had the pleasure of before) but with a grimace rather than a smile. So, it turned out that the Plough Inn served it's purpose for the getting of a very decent beer or three and was a quiet and calm place to drink it. However, we will definitely not return ever again as my good lady cannot live without her iPhone for more than 5 minutes.

I'm not totally against Sam Smith pubs' No Laptops and Mobile Phones policy but it's a bit ironic when they're happy for you to pay using your mobile phone. The Plough is a bit of a funny duddy environment with its walls plastered with Don't Do That and Don't Do This signs. Indeed one could be forgiven for thinking you were is a remand centre. I go in these pubs because I love Sam Smith's OBB bitter and their prices are excellent. Apart from their bitter, the drinks range is not your run of the mill stuff (which some might applaud). I'm all for a quiet drink but I felt like I was sitting outside the Headmaster's office too afraid to talk in The Plough.

A pub without phones or TVs etc. Me and my boyfriend walked in expecting to get stared at but it was so friendly and quiet which is what we wanted after the madness of the football match in every other pub. This was a lovely little retreat for us as we waited for our train. The staff talked to us and so did a customer. My boyfriend enjoyed his drink and I felt safe in the pub. We will be back now we know it is a quiet and friendly place to stop.

Just as the tide comes and goes so does the busy times in Whitby pubs. After many yearly visits to Whitby this was our first visit to The Plough. If you need a bit of respite from the throngs to enjoy a calm drink then hit The Plough. Roomy bars with unsticky tables and polite notices asking you to talk and not text. There is also a beer courtyard out back. The frontage of The Plough hides a tardis of a pub. We will be including this pub on future mini crawls of Whitby pubs. Check out the beautiful labels on the spirit bottles.

We went in for a drink on a Saturday night and thought we had walked onto a funeral parlour. I soon realised that as it is a Samuel Smith pub you get very cheap beer but no music TV or atmosphere. Smart phones and tablets are banned but that didn't stop a couple using their phones. If you are looking for a very quiet cheap drink then this is the pub for you

Cheap drinks as not branded. reduced use of phones good. but place needs to understand people might want to check something quickly when they are on their own and not be picked out of several people to speak to for checking quickly. Compared to the other bars in Whitby this one was dead.

Staff members seemed to think customers are mind readers and could understand that an unlabelled staircase is for staff only. Had a member confront me with a rude, confrontational attitude and told me off for briefly walking up trying to figure out where I was. She spoke to me like it was obvious the stairs was not in use. The stairs are not labelled with an obvious marker, or at least I did not see one, and it was not chained off to indicate that it was for staff only and it was wide open in the middle for used. Unacceptable behaviour for such a little thing. Never again. There are plenty of other nice places in Whitby to go to for a drink or something to eat with a much more friendly and welcoming atmosphere. This place is not one of them.

This is disgusting the attitude of staff member. one staff member told us he punches there dog then gives it beer in front of us. when we told another staff member she turned and said that I have been on the beer all day. I'd had a couple of drinks and what difference does it make the member of staff who's dog it was was sat with us telling us what he does to the dog and saying he might go to prison for setting a pouch alight and punching a female police officer and can you please take my dog off me if I get sent down. When I told staff she said its his mums dog but he said 'my mum hates the dog too. Absolutely heart breaking some customers offered him £200 that's how scared we was for the dog it's disgraceful she is knows the guy is hitting the dog and she knows this is happening it's absolutely awful and disgusting behaviour and the members of staff defending him and saying' by then' as we was trying to talk to her rude and disrespectful. if you are a loving dog Ower PLEASE DON'T GO TO THIS PUB as the staff condole abusives behaviour towards dogs

We come to Whitby several times a year and while here we always enjoy visiting the many different pubs on offer. We decided to try this one out for the first time. We were surprised on entering that it had a huge open fire on the go and was lovely and traditional looking inside (which we like) but also that it was literally empty, apart from one other customer (we later learned a regular) on getting a drink and returning to our seats we soon realised why. I had literally just checked my phone as I was waiting for an important message when the bar lady rushed over, rather abruptly, to say it was a mobile/electronic free pub and could I put it away. I then noticed a couple of small stickers on the walls around stating this, no electronic devices or children allowed, they didn’t stand out in fairness due to the Halloween decorations which were also on the walls. I can appreciate that they are trying to create something unique and although I might not agree with it, the decision is obviously theirs to make. What does make me sad is that I can’t see this pub staying open for much longer, during the current climate, it’s just not sustainable for them, the pub is clearly relying on those last few remaining locals and I’m sure one day the right chain will get it and make it what it should be again, a welcoming, happy environment. On a final note, I would strongly advise the landlord/landlady to put a larger version of these posters on the main door so that people can make an informed decision before even entering the building.

We had a long drive to Whitby, the sun was shining and we took lots of photos to look at and post on Facebook for our friends who follow us. We should have heeded the warning signs in the window, No Children & No Dogs. Once inside another warning sign said No Mobile, Tablets or Laptops. We bought a round of drinks and wanted to check or photos to share with friends. We were immediately told by the barman that it was their policy to not allow you to look at your phone. We left our drinks and walked out. This is the most unfriendly pub we’ve ever been in. We certainly won’t ever go in there ever again. If that warning sign for no phones had been in the window outside, we would never have gone in in the first place. In these uncertain times hospitality establishments should be welcoming customers, not chase them away. Avoid this place like the plague!

Happy to start then massive fight outside, drugs being used and the man in the pink shorts and the door nan without a tooth were very much together with what was going on. Not going back ever disgusting behaviour by the staff and doorman.
